  • The O’Sullivan Dam is one of the largest earthfill dams in the United States. Steve and I have driven over it many times without knowing much about it. When we were recently in Eastern Washington, we looked it up online and made a quick stop at the boat launch on the east side. The Dam is 200’ tall and 19,000’ long. Here’s a link to more information.

Wow! I really love the early morning pastel coloration of the calm waters that you captured at the Potholes Reservoir. I haven't been to the eastern side of Washington state yet, but sure would like to visit that area someday. It's quite different than most of western Washington. James O' Sullivan sounds like he was a very interesting and ambitious man.

Hi Jen. No we did not reach the Grand Coulee despite travelling west on route 2 on one trip. We were at the end of one road trip and followed route 2 from Glacier NP to Seattle. We had only two weeks but our loop took us from Olympic NP to Mount St Helens, San Francisco, Yosemite, Death Valley, and Yellowstone. We always felt we had to see as much as we could on these trips as we were always unsure if we could get back again to see more. As it happened we made it back more than 30 times and just missed Iowa and Arkansas. The last trip was for eight weeks just a couple of months before Covid. Two subsequent trips were then cancelled and now health concerns are hampering plans (Robert) Looks like my next trip might be with an Amtrak Pass and a few Greyhounds! Not sure how many of the NPs I will be able to re-visit though. Anyway it has all been good so far and hopefully will be again. Best wishes. Robert & Ivor@@JenniferLupine

Happy Spring to you as well, Jen😁
Looks like a great place to go for a hike around to check out the area.
Nice capture of the marmot and the ground squirrel. Did the marmot chirp at you?

Hi, Jen! This reservoir and the O'Sullivan dam impress us much. We don't have any reservoirs or dams of this size here. Thanks for the information about the place and have a nice springtime, too!
    Cheers, Christiane and Werner

I enjoyed learning about the dam too! The regular road goes right over it, so you don't always notice that you're driving up on a dam, just that there's water on one side and not the other. Sometimes it can get really windy there, so it was special to have a calm morning. There's a huge power dam a little farther north, on the Columbia River, called the Grand Coulee dam- we have visited before- but will probably go again and make a video to share this time. It's one that generates lots of electricity. It's really quite amazing to think of the changes that have been made in the landscape over the past 150 years- thanks! Cheers!

Hi Jen, Potholes reservoir is stunning and I loved your footage, sooooo beautiful and such a clear day. Love the name Moses Lake 🙂 Amazing that the dam is one of the largest in the US and I guess the birds we heard were from the wildlife Refuge? So cute sounding. The information you gave about James Sullivan was really interesting, he did a lot si its goid that the dam was named after him. Such a beautiful place and beautifully filmed as always. Happy Spring to you too 🙂👍❤️~ Anna

Thanks so much Anna- Happy Spring! O yes, the birds love the shore around the lake and down into the Wildlife Refuge! We’ve visited several times before, but I think it must have been in the summer - before there weren’t many birds or other animals around. It can get pretty windy there so it was extra nice to have the calm and stillness. Thanks- hugs from Washington! 🤗😄💛💛☀️☀️- Jen

Hi Mike- we enjoyed learning more about the dam. Sometimes we take for granted all the work that went in to setting up the water systems out west. I sure would have liked to see the area before the dam went in! Thanks and Happy Saturday! 😄

    Hi Jennifer
Is it massive place to explore. '
I did not know about this reservoir when I visited WA
Even though there is no elevation gain, the distance is large.
Beautiful scenery...the sunshine awaits us and greet us.
haha Potholes Reservoir?? Who named it? Did you see potholes??? hahah
    Enjoy the weather, Jennifer.
Regarding my toy, a camera, I won't be able to change from AUTO to manual for a long time hahha
There are so many offspring I found during this filming trip...I hope you enjoy it seeing some wildlife encounter when our videos come out.
Thank you always for education me with your knowledge. You are the only female hiker who is able to make flawless documentation while hiking. I treasure it.

Hi, it’s always fun to hear from you! You’re awesome! I think the name Potholes comes from all the small lakes and pons in the rocks, left over from the last ice age, about 14,000 years ago! They fill up with water and are great for the wildlife- and I think that’s what it must have looked like before the dam was built! Wouldn’t that have been fun to see. Your event trip sounds great - I’m sure you’re doing great with your photography- baby animals sound so precious! I’ll look forward to seeing your videos! Have a great weekend! 🌻🌻🌻😄 - Jen
