...this piece of music has been used as a signature tune for Country & Western music program in Malawi (MBC Radio 1) for so many years. It reminds me of my childhood late night hours when the program was being aired...around 22hrs!!!...
two days after I saw deliverance I bought a banjo from Targ and Diner in Chicago - cost me 60 bucks took me two years to figure out how to play it - but this? Incredible
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh yes finally listened to a studio recorded Dueling Banjos. Man cant wait to download this and put it onto my ipod and phone. my dad put this song on for me and I loved it ever since.
@Deltatroska125 It's a scale exercise! A person just has to play B-C-D-B-C-A-B-G-A for the slow part, and various inversions of the G chord, C chord, and D chord for the fast part.
The 'dislike' votes probably are because Eric Weissberg originally was credited as writing this song on the movie soundtrack but it's totally written by bluegrass musician Arthur Smith, a Charlotte's TV show personality in Charlotte and recording studio owner back in the 60s (his studio recorded James Brown's 'Papa's Got a Brand New Bag,' among many others). Smith won a large settlement and was thereafter listed as the songwriter. If you listen to 'Feudin' Banjos' by Arthur Smith it's apparent why. The song first gained widespread popularity when the Dillards (as 'The Darlings') played it with Andy Griffith on 'The Andy Griffith Show.
damn thats frigin awesome. im glad i found this, because i first heard it on a parody called "Dueling Brandos" from saturday night live. the objective of the skit was first to play a bit of the banjo tune and then do a Marlin Brando immitation from "The Godfather". this is a great song. :)
Well, the theme is very, very old. You find it for instance in an " Intrada " for the Renaissance lute (anonym) dating 1635 ... I will play it within a few days ! Excellent ! Best wishes.
aeret this very momento me and my wife are enjoying this beautifull song an an xtraordinary versión with a very tastefull french wine arrogant frog, it`s a very beautyfull sense, thanks for this versión cubeableme.
But when I watched the movie, in the credits there was something along the lines of: 'Dueling Banjos is originally Fuedin Banjos . . .' something like that. But I was watching a DVD version, so maybe it was put in after the lawsuit.
I`ll Stick my Tuppence in and Say That it`s a Delight to find a YT Vid Where The Comments are actually informed and civilized for Once. Great Tune too. God Bless :)
Oh man, I NEED that shirt! Camped along a narrow river through some dark woods in Michigan one year and they had tubing. We were late to sign up so we followed along on one of our air beds that had a slow leak. At some point I started imitating that song"ding ding ding...." and I was quickly told to stop, lol.
Hi Eric; I`ve added your banjo work to my song list on You Tube, a track you recorded for our group, then called "Feather Blue." You became a part of my 2 inch master tapes at Atlantic Records in 1976 as a studio musician. Not sure if you ever look online to follow your music but if you do, the song you are playing in is titled "Joe Seddon With Eric Weissberg On Banjo, "Are You Ready To Love Me." Should you find it, drop a note to say hi. Love your playing in it! Joe
actually, the original song was called feudin' banjos and it was written by arthur smith and don reno. check the copywright. deliverance was sued for crediting it to the wrong writer, and arthur smith and don reno won
This is not the original, the original was composed in 1955 by Arthur Smith and it was called Feudin Banjos. Great tune but wrong title, nobody ever gives Arthur Smith any credit so I will. Arthur Smith thanks for composing a great tune
@CubeableGame Ron Block on banjo and Dan Tyminski on guitar, as if perfect for the tune "Dueling Banjos" played in the key of A and Dan and Ron would do a good job, wouldn't they? Also, Ron Block on banjo and Sierra Hull on mandolin, as if perfect for the tune "Dueling Banjos" played in the key of A and Sierra and Ron would do a good job, wouldn't they?
Dan , This Guy " Mark Wardle " Dueling Banjos lesson # 39 is a really nice version in my opinion. You can down load tab for $10 dollars I think and see him play to on You Tube, Good Luck
There is a lot of doubt about who really composed this - but it probably was NOT Arthur "guitar" Smith. It reportedly goes much farther back than 1955. Don Reno sued the movie moguls and gained credit for the song, but his only proof of ownership was the recording that he and Smith made. Older bluegrass and old time musicians were not asked to testify at the trial; most say the tune, and other similar "feuding instrument" tunes, have been played in the mtns as far back as they remember.

two days after I saw deliverance I bought a banjo from Targ and Diner in Chicago - cost me 60 bucks took me two years to figure out how to play it - but this? Incredible
It's actually Eric Weissberg, and, Steve Mandell. They hit #2 in Billboard, 2-24-73. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh yes finally listened to a studio recorded Dueling Banjos. Man cant wait to download this and put it onto my ipod and phone. my dad put this song on for me and I loved it ever since.
I visited the south for the first time this past January and it felt exactly the way this song sounds.

@Deltatroska125 It's a scale exercise! A person just has to play B-C-D-B-C-A-B-G-A for the slow part, and various inversions of the G chord, C chord, and D chord for the fast part.

If you notice the mild echo as though it were played in a concert hall. I think that's called a reverb. I have that feature on my electronic keyboard.
Awesome 👌
i roll all my windows down and blast this full volume when i drive through the ghetto parts of my city XD
I do the same with Free Bird by Lynard Skynard.
Thought I was the only one doing that😂😂😂😂😂

Didn't they try to steal this song? I know the writer sued and got a big check for copyright infringement. His name was Arthur Smith.
Eric and Steve Landed On the Top 40 On 1/13/73, Spent 4 Weeks at No. 2, On the Chart 14 Weeks, and Sold a Million Copies!
How true ! I can remember when this was a huge hit on the radio when I was in high school in the early 70s !!
thattsss insaneeee the guitar had quit couldnt keep up lol
The first version in 1955 was between a tenor banjo and a 5 string banjo. Eric Weissberg changed it into the song that it is today.
This should have been on Carl Sagan's gold record to the cosmos.
For some reason, I think this would make excellent background music for a gasoline commercial! lol
What's not to like? Thanks for post.
excellent

@candybrae you can ck out a fantastic guitar version of dueling banjos by searching "dueling banjo guitar" and the 2nd choice should be pinofluvius
Listen to that! Folks, it doesn't get any better.
Okay, so, my friend just sent me this on Skype and I was like; "OMAHGAH LEH AWSHUME SAWSE MOOOSICC."
Brilliant
Oh yes, it is!
On my canondale I have a sticker that says "peddle faster, i hear banjo music" But in fact I freaking love this song.
Is this song better for a shindig or a hootenanny?
@DonaldHellsing No you just didn't look at the date I sort of figured out who it was over a year
Anyone know where i can find this song played on some brass instruments? only one i can seem to find is a trombone version, and it isnt that great.
So what connection does Earl Scruggs have to this? Just asking,.. I had an old Earl Scruggs SP 45 1/2, hence my asking.
This is not the original, the original was composed in 1955 by Arthur Smith and it was called Feudin Banjos. Great tune but wrong title, nobody ever gives Arthur Smith any credit so I will. Arthur Smith thanks for composing a great tune
I believe the thrust was upon Ned Beatty.
How right you are ! That notorious scene brings to mind the sign that says "all deliveries in the rear"....
Lordy! I have this on a 45 RPM single, backed up with Reuben's Train.
@CubeableGame Ron Block on banjo and Dan Tyminski on guitar, as if perfect for the tune "Dueling Banjos" played in the key of A and Dan and Ron would do a good job, wouldn't they? Kruger brothers version is the best I have listened to. Check it out.
Notice that this is a resonator banjo and not the open back from the movie.

They're trying to outdo each other, but they end up doing a duet. How do they not outdo each other? Mr Bean: Magic. *snortsnort*
