What is Vsync? Should you turn it on or off?

- Vsync is a feature of most modern games, designed to prevent screen-tearing by syncing up the vertical refresh rate of your monitor with the frame-rate of the game. Sound simple enough? It kind of is, but there are different things to consider, such as various types of vsync, including the excellent Nvidia Gsync and AMD Freesync technologies.
We’ll also explain to you what vsync does, and when to use it.

I have freesync monitor but nvidia gpu...
Well, as of about the time you wrote this comment, Nvidia has started updating its gpu drivers so that they can work with Freesync technology for the first time.
Update your drivers, and check to see if your FreeSync monitor is one of those that is now G-Sync compatible.

Game FPS > Monitor FPS = Vsync ON
Game FPS < Monitor FPS = Vsync OFF
Monitor fps mean how many hz ur monitor has? My monitor has 60hz, and my ingame fps has 80-105, should u turn on or off
@@kyanite7 Yes. Monitor FPS means the monitor's refresh rate itself. and about your questions, well, according to my understanding of the video. In general, if your in game fps is higher than your monitor's refresh rate, then its recommended to switch ON your Vsync. This is to avoid graphic processor to overheat and avoid screen tearing. So, yes, in your case, recommended to switch ON your Vsync.
What about mouse lag and stuff?
If you deactivate vsync with fps under your refresh rate, you still get tearing (even more). So you should still activate it, if you can live with microstutters.

If it is about FPS does this mean that I can just lock the FPS instead of turning on vsync?
Yes you are doing essentially the same thing. V-sync just doesn't require you to know your monitors refresh rate
@@ZantharEos alright thx bro.
@@aliatya9337 INCORRECT. You cannot just "lock" (limit) FPS and expect no problems. People seem to ignore the "sync" part of VSync.
Lets clear a few details first. There are two parts of Video RAM.
The front buffer and the back buffer.
The monitor will always be reading data from the front buffer.
The monitor draws the screen line by line from top to bottom and will read Y lines of data from the front buffer. Y=1080 for 1080p and 900 for 900p etc.. It will read all lines of data within 1/60th of a second for 60Hz monitors, 1/144th for 144Hz monitors. The monitor always does this regardless of what the graphics card is doing. (Non GSync and FreeSync monitors)
Graphics card generates frame data and stores this in back buffer.
When back buffer is full a designation swap is done and back buffer now becomes front buffer and old front buffer now becomes back buffer. Now new frame starts to be generated and data is stored in new back buffer.
For a monitor to give a tear free frame, it MUST draw a COMPLETE frame to the screen. This complete frame MUST BE READY IN THE FRONT BUFFER when the monitor starts to draw the first frame line at the top of the screen therefore a frame buffer swap MUST happen WHEN the monitor has drawn the LAST FRAME LINE at the bottom of the screen and not at ANY OTHER time. If the swap is done at any other time, such as when the graphics card disregards what the monitor is doing (VSync OFF setting) then the buffer swap can happen whilst the monitor has only drawn half of the front buffer. When this happens part of the current frame and part of the next frame are mixed and because things don't physically line up on the screen, you will see a tear.
Setting VSync to ON will ensure that the graphics card DOES note what the monitor is doing and that frame buffer swaps will ONLY happen at the CORRECT TIME when the last frame line has been drawn.

You have saved my money and i thank you,i had potato pc so i never knew about this. I almost bought new gpu thinking the current one is broken.
Does vsync draw less power when you turn it on? I guess it should since the GPU and CPU in some games don't need to work on 99%. Especially if they are too op for the game.
Good video mate , i dunno why it doesn't get much views.
Is that a game in the video or something that comes from a benchmarking software because I see an MSI billboard there ? If it's a game, can you tell me the name of the game?
I have a 75hz monitor with a gtx 1650 super 😭 I have to turn it on or the screen tearing it’s going to be terrible lmao
But u get more input lag with that?
What’s the difference between caping game FPS at monitor limit vs vsync
Caping fps means you are limiting max fps to a certain value.vsync limits your fps to your monitor's refresh rate and remove tearing by syncing every frame to refresh rate.So caping fps wont get you rid of tearing.Misconception that people have is that tearing happens at fps higher than refresh rate of monitor but tearing happens at any fps where it is not in sync with monitor.
just like Dream said, except for the fact that vsync caps your fps. that's another misconception, vsync does NOT cap your fps directly, it just syncs your rendered frames to the vblank of your display so that for each refresh cycle there is 1 whole frame displayed, thus resulting in frames displayed=display refresh rate. In reality you render more frames than your target hz, because there still are frame buffers to fill, like the pre-rendered frames which is at least 1 more. this makes a big difference for what type of input lag you're going to get when using vsync on. Some systems will have more or less frame time of "lag" depending on the buffer settings. There are a couple tricks to achieve low lag vsync in fact, one of those is using a precise fps limiter and setting your frame limit just a little below the refresh rate of your screen. Another but more complex way of achieving no tear with virtually no added lag is scanline syncing. Look up RTSS for both of these tricks. There are very good forum sources as well for such topics, you can check BlurBusters out for anyting concerning display technologies, especially HRF ones!

Depends on the game. That's a pretty powerful card (have the mobile version in my laptop), so it should really run most games at 1080p no problem. So we'd say 'on' for the most part.
It's good to monitor your FPS using a tool like MSI Afterburner. If your FPS in a given game is dropping/consistently below 60fps, then for that particular game you can switch it off.

@@gamemaniac8 Why do you think every single pro gamer's playing without any sync?
I have a very awkward question here, let's say we have a very powerful gpu and we run games on a very high resolution and setting. Can this perhaps sabotage the game's performance. As in, ghost effects, no solid-impact in environment and other physics related problems, as the game's code / engine can't keep up with the high frames or too much calculations? Is these plausible? I'm probably very wrong here but would be interested in knowing someone testing this out!
I can’t speak to the logistics of anything, just my experience, I’ve only used V-sync in situations where it was a fix to a problem i was having with the game, and the game has almost always suffered from turning it on
I only use Vsync to go from playing on my 144hz monitor to playing on a 60hz TV though, so a lot of my feeling could be biased. But I find it strange that I can get 100+ frames without it, but once its on, its a hit or miss if I can even hold the 60 fps.
It depends completely in the game. In most cases you won't experience any other negatives from turning vsync OFF other than higher framerates (which are good for input times, but bad for high temps) and on the other hand screen tearing... Which is this very annoying graphical artifact.
However, if you're playing something like Skyrim, turning vsync off will break the physics of the game, same thing with the early Dead Space games, same thing with some early 2000's games, such as NOLF.
For the most part though, is the classic trade off, vsync off= higher temps, also screen tearing, but no input lag and high fps. vsync on= tons of input lag (specially in a 60hz monitor) but no tearing.
i thought my gpu was shot it was choppy gaming on my omen laptop turning on vsync fixed it now its smooth

Lori M. Edwards that was weird thought I wasn’t 700$ on a messed up laptop never knew vsync would do that
Vsync on for my old monitor with only 60hz.
Vsync off for my new monitor with 300 hz.
I just learned this today when I played A Plague Tale Innocense. I noticed the game fps is locked at 60. after just do some research people saying it's my setting. so I tried to turn it off to see what happened and the game run at 120 fps.
Input lag is a game flaw not a VSync flaw. Games do not have to design their inputs based on graphics frames. Most of the time, this "lag" is placebo anyway. Drop down to 30fps - If your graphics card can't even match the monitor's refresh rate, better buy a new card that can or turn down graphics candy settings until it can. You need VSync ON always otherwise your GFX card will be running at full speed all of the time even when there is no action. This is the same as, if you drive, keeping the accelerator floored all of the time. There is no need for that in a car and there is no need for that in a graphics card either. Your monitor can only display its rated Hz. Your graphics card should match that at all times and it should be synced which means when the monitor is drawing the front buffer, the graphics card is drawing the back buffer and completes that draw faster than the monitor can draw the front buffer to screen and waits until the monitor is ready again. This means you always see a complete frame and therefore no tear. You will also notice that since the graphics card is no longer running at full power, much less power is used and heat are produced increasing the reliability and longevity of PC components as well. Bottom line - VSync is ESSENTIAL.
I started dancing 40 seconds into this video and couldn't stop until the music stopped

Vsync doesn't boost fps. It just ensures you don't get screen tearing by the fps exceeding your monitor refresh rate.
It can sometimes actually reduce your fps too. If your GPU can't hit a stable 60fps with vsync on, your framerate will drop to 30fps.
So vsync isn't perfect. Freesync and G-Sync are much better versions of it (if you have that option).

Simple logic if you have 60htz monitor and your GPU can give more than 60fps just turn on Vsync it will save your GPU to struggle giving more FPS as it is not required since you required only 60FPS at 60hrtz . it will save the GPU energy, power and increase the life of the GPU and screen tearing as well .

What it locks your fps to depends on the game. Normally you can set your fps cap in each game you play - whether it's 30, 60, 144, or whatever.

@@ocbojm i was already capping my frames when i was having tearing problem but tearing is gone after enabling v-sync ... my question is keeping both enabled is ok ... v-sync alone can handle both? i mean fixing tearing and capping the frames ... coz i need to cap the frames in purpose (another reason)
@@madwolf1201 Are you sure you were capping the frames to what your screen could handle? If you have a 60hz monitor, it would be pointless to cap frames to 70 fps.
@@angrysocialjusticewarrior yups i do, my monitor is 60hz so i caped my frames to 60 fps ... but as i said my tearing problem is gone with v-sync enabled ... and am ok with frame capping enabled too since i don't notice any negative effects from it
is it just me or everytime when i off vsync my gpu tempereture will increse ?
Just noticed that, and then saw your comment
@@TheMan-mh9ek you too?
Coz your unrestricting your fps cap and therefore using more of your gpu when vsync is off
@@gamemaniac8 i see that explained why my gpu always get hot. thanks a bunch buddy.
I turned it on and my gpu temps went from 85c to 60c 😀
@KiWi yes, and it also reduces power consumtion
@KiWi old cpu and gpu known have terrible stutter in modern game even at non demanding one like valorant or CSGO, so
Some games I turn it off as my screen doesn't tear but in others I need it on
i have this monitor www.anandtech.com/show/10823/aoc-launches-ag352qcx-35-inch-200-hz-curved-mva-display-with-adaptivesync with a Geforce Rtx 2080 Ti ,i'm a little worried , what settings should i pick... can u help tech ?
What is this cinematic fight from?!?
I play war thunder with 180 FPS, but my monitor only 60Hz. So, i always see the tearing. Then I turn the vsync on, it's better, never tearing anymore. Of course, I turn the Triple Buffering on too, and the game very smooth.
name of game intro please
