Kind of frustrating when people remember Dale Earnhardt for the way he died. He was so fun to watch drive and just plain good. It’s interesting that he hated restrictor plate racing when he was considered a master at it.
That is why he was Dale Earnhardt. He and Tim Richmond were drivers who were not afraid to take the risks that others were not able to. He was so comfortable racing at Daytona and Talladega. I remembered when he swept Talladega in 1999 and the fall race in 2000, in memorable Dale fashion. His loss was so huge to all of motorsports. He was so involved in trying to make the sport better. Others drivers would only voice their opinions if it benefited them, not Dale. Lot of times he would go to them or they would go to him for solutions. After he left, the races were different. There was a more cautious approach especially from the drivers, crew chiefs, and team owners even to this day. Mike Helton and his crew were proactive.
He thought the plates and aero packages were making it too dangerous. Ultimately the reason he was killed was because he was trying to put drive nascars dangerous aero packages. NASCAR wanted pack racing and dale told them and in interviews that it was gonna make it dangerous and kill people. NASCAR didn’t care about them they only cared about lead changes which is not interesting. They took it out of the drivers hands. So skill no longer mattered is why dale hated it. Great drivers hated it. The low skill drivers loved it because they could now compete with Dale Sr. When before he crushed them.

And we had no idea that just days later Earnhardt would be gone... Its kinda hard to watch actually, seeing how good things were at this point in history.
+John Boy Yeah. It's extremely sad, as Dale was especially happy to start the season. Probably the happiest he'd ever been. Life was going great for him, and it's so depressing to think that it would all end about a week later. :(
He raced in the Rolex 24 hours at Daytona along with his son. He was so excited about what could have been for the 2001 season. I hope he realizes how much of an impact he had on the sport.
We miss Dale so much but he is rolling in Heaven racing!

Dale's move at 48:42 is amazing.
Everyone said he had lost his nerve after his wreck at Talladega in 96 and then with the neck injury in 99 but he was new man after he had that fixed before the 2000 season. Ran second in points that year and I still fully believe had he not died in the 500 he would have won his 8th championship in 2001. He was like a new man out there.

watching dale earnhardt makes me sad but i smile i actually went to the atlanta race in 2000 he won the crowd was great even though i was 10 i still remember it
Watching this tells me that NASCAR needs to bring back high-reving engines and being allowed to pass under the yellow line... this racing is FAR superior to today.
the engines aren't high revving they are actually turning 2000rpm less than todays superspeedway cars. it's the exhaust system placement.
now we have the stupid gear ratio rule to limit engine speed

Hey Dave I just saw this comment after the awful package that NASCAR announced for 2019.
dalejr183 this is 100% due to the cars not running a X pipe exhaust.
I think the Jr/Skinner battle shows why the 2-car draft and the yellow line rule has ruined plate racing.
Thanks for posting this Dave. It's funny watching it because it really was a different world back then. When the racing was good and exciting, when Fox was fresh and new with something to prove, before Dale died--when we had a leader on the track to look up to, that Gordon feels like he has to run down and explain; before the yellow line, before Steve and Jerry had their accidents and were forced to retire due to brain injury, before September and before the wars--when you could walk on an airplane with a water bottle and cut an apple with your swiss army knife, and before the sappy patriotic overtures that took over sporting events.
Anyway, that was fun to watch (I only watched the first half), nice move by Sterling--restarts in plate races just suck.

I remember taking bathroom breaks in class 2 or 3 times and stopping by my computer class to get updates on the twins.
The computer teacher loved nascar and so did i.
This was one of the only couple years my dad didn’t sign me out early to watch them at home.

I was not an Earnhardt fan then and was born in 1990 but even I can see a huge alteration on the sport after 2001 it really doesn't feel the same as it did back then and didn't even in mid 2000s.
Need racing like this again. Also need the cars to sound like this again.

You can find races going all the way back to the 70's & 80's here on youtube... Yet this is my favorite time to watch races...

Ole Mikey ( Waltrip ) really blew it on that final restart........he totally forgot to up-shift. It was so funny how he recalled this incident all these years later, and how he was so worried that Dale was gonna chew him out. Mikey said he was trying to sneak by Dale's RV, but Dale yelled out "get in here".......ole Mikey thought "uh oh, I'm really gonna get it now".......So Mikey said: "I'm really sorry Dale" and Dale said: "For what?"......and Mikey replied: "for screwing up during that restart at the end".......and Dale said: "I ain't worried about that, that's history now, it doesn't matter, here's the plan, you, me and Junior are going to work together to win the 500"......and Mikey had no choice but to agree & say: "OK".........ha ha.......but in his head, Mikey was thinking "that sounds great, but 40 other cars are going to have their own strategy as well".......but during that red flag stop near the end of the 500, Mikey noticed how it was him, Junior, and Dale Sr in positions 1,2, & 3.........and Mikey thought: "Wow, Dale was right, this really worked, how the hell did he know that?".......I'll never forget that story. Of course we all know the tragic ending that was bitter sweet with a historic win and a historic loss at the same time.

the most un-fucking-believable racing ever. INSANE racing. As "The Day" documentary said, the 2001 500 really was a Shakespearian tragedy of sport.
Man how do people no share the finish of that 2nd 125 more often? That's one of the best finishes I've seen at Daytona!

Dale Jr. was SOOOO CLOSE to winning his first qualifier there. Unfortunately, it would've been his only chance to celebrate with his dad.
At least a RCR car with the #3 (albeit a 1 behind it) won the duel.
@@whoasked9500 Then in the Daytona 500 Mike Skinner broke a gear during green flag stops within 45-50 to go. Which sucked for a guy who had one of THE FASTEST cars in the entire race.

Shaking my head, Earnhardt's move to get away from the pack cost him a shot to win the Twin 125 race he was in. I never understood why he tried to do that, he was a sitting duck.
He had no choice!! He was the leader… at some point you have to go… what should he have done?

Why can't NA$CAR bring back this rules package? All 5 races (including Oct. 2000 @ Tally) had great racing and few cautions; 3, 3, 0, 3, & 3 respectively. Some recent plate races have had the sum of that total in one race.
They were 5 wide!!!
Here's the thing though. Dale Earnhardt wasnt a fan of the restrictor plate package during the late 90s. He was a fan of the 2001 package which he talked about in Happy Hour.

He should have at least won 🏆 10 to 12 races in his career. He was replaced by robby gordon who was only good at Sonoma and Watkins Glen.

@Ernde38 Fox Sports Net televised some of the early IRL races after ABC decided the series wasn't worth their exclusivity. I think they did the race at Texas a few times and the first race at Richmond (2001). They also did some Formula One races in 2000. I don't know what other IRL races they covered.
When this came on, it broke my streak of watching the Twins on TV...they would show them all on CBS in tape delay and since FOX did not do that, I never watched how Earnhardt lost his heat, all i know is He got too far out and then he was passed by Sterling Marlin.
Michael missed a shift also...it's crazy how fast marlin was that speedweeks. DEI/RCR were the fastest teams but marlin could damn near pull out and pass by himself
And Sterling probably had a good chance to win the 500 if Dale had not been blocking which cost him his life but he wanted to see the 15 and 8 sort it out. The end result was terrible for a great race car driver and legend for sure!

Thanks for uploading this. I had tears in my eyes watching. Knowing what an awesome career Dale Sr had and sad to know that three days later we would loose one of the greatest drivers NASCAR has ever known. Nowadays NASCAR sucks.

Gosh Dale was such a great driver. I really think he was going to win the title to sit on the thrown with 8, had he not been taken from us suddenly days later.
This was my favorite time in Nascar... & boom it all came crashing down

Funny, Jeff Gordon was really using that yellow line to plow his way up... NASCAR tells him to stop. I think Dale’s death really pushed the no passing below the yellow line rule.

Top 15 aside from the front row (top 14 if any of them finish up front) then spots 31-38 on speed. Then 39-42 on provisionals, 43rd for a past champion provisional. If no past champion then it goes to the next in owner points.

I didnt start watching NASCAR til '04 can someone explain the Old Duel Rules to me, was it top 15 from each race(besides the front row) advance and then they fill the rest out with Provisionals or am i way off ?
Front Row determined by top 2 fastest, then positions 3-30 determined by Qualifier race finish spots, 31-36 by top fastest, then the remaining positions from 37 on back based on provisionals from the previous position.

WHY did Earnhardt try and drive off from everyone on the final restart? Bad idea, its just a lead like that was not smart on his part and getting stuck in that sucker hole proved to be his undoing unfortunately.

That car was full time in 2000 as well; Scott and PPI just missed several races as both were in their first year of stock car racing.
