This race is just a classic example of Robby being Robby, but if he didn't do that he just wouldn't be Robby
Twenty years later and this race holds up very well.
It's so weird seeing the drivers have so much freedom of motion in the cars compared to now
That is what I miss. When drivers wanted to go, they could go where they wanted and move where they wanted.
Where the streets have no name...
One of my favorite songs.
Also really really classy of Fox to have Benny into the Hollywood Hotel as a ceremonial handoff to Turner
And NBC
@@kristopherversteegt2939 turner produced all of NBC’s nascar races from 2001-06
@@TheLocalLt THAT'S RIGHT!
Also, Matt Yocum went to NBC after FOX ended NASCAR for the season.
Did they do that in the years that followed?
it’s cool seeing the Gran Turismo 3 trackside ads
the lap 3 moment of silence always gave me chills that year. and watching this is still does. held my three up the whole time, just like i did when it was live..
I was at the Rockingham race the week after he passed and the have everybody an Earnhardt flag and did a silent lap with everybody holding them up on lap 3, and Jrs early wreck scared the hell out of everybody, miss those days had so many great memories from going to races there, i can't stand to even drive by the track anymore seeing it just rotting away like that.
@Clarkke Peterson. I was at that race too. I was 11 and my Dad got us tickets to the Brickyard every year since 1994, we were from Kentucky, and also one other race, in 2001 it was the Dura Lube 400 at Rockingham the week after Earnhardt passed. My Dads work friend also got a ticket and drove dow with us, he was a die hard Earnhardt fan, he almost didn’t go. It rained on and off that Sunday and everybody was trying to buy Earnhardt merchandise from his Hauler at the track. Never seen so many people waiting for merchandise at any event EVER! My Dads friend waited for 1 hour to try and get a hat but go tired of waiting in the rainy weather lol. They ran a portion of the race that day, mostly under caution, and we went back Monday for the finish, Steve Park pulled off a hell of a win that day over Bobby Labonte. Kevin Harvick had a great win that next week at Atlanta in the 29 GM Goodwrench car in a photo finish with Jeff Gordon. Crazy how Earnhardt died at Daytona and his driver Michael Waltrip won the race, then the next week his other driver, Steve Park wins a classic finish, followed by his replacement driver, Kevin Harvick winning at Atlanta in a car Earnhardt set up for Atlanta before season. I miss those golden days of NASCAR. It hasn’t been the same since the Chase in 2004, and it’s gone even more downhill due to the “playoffs” that started in 2014.
You could hear a pin drop across the racetrack on lap 3 when everyone held up their fingers and when Junior wrecked at Rockingham. I swear even the car engines went silent until he got out of the car....
Too bad this was the last year for Gilligan's Island- FOX did SUCH a great job on that, with Skipper Dick Berggren
I wish they didn't just do that for that only year. 😢
While looking up info on this race, for the photos I had taken there, came across this video. I was lucky in that I'd entered and won a contest put on by Sprint, then Kyle Petty's sponsor, to go to the race, hotel, VIP passes. Could never have went there from Louisiana without Kyle and Sprint. This was an awesome race to see in person.
The end of the program was a great way to go out with a bang for FOX!
and the life of Dale Earnhardt Sr. (1951-2001)
Pretty mind-blowing to see Kurt Busch starting 2nd to last here, considering the next 5 times he raced here: qualified 2nd, 5th, 3rd, 6th, and 1st.
Crazy to think Busch was once seen as just another driver
The Gilligan's Island segment before the race started was entertaining to watch. I think Robby Gordon should had focused more on Tony Stewart than Kevin Harvick who was off the lead lap. What shocked me the most was seeing Benny Parsons at the very end. I feel like these days, they rarely or never talk about the other network(s) that cover the sport.
Maybe all of the cars who pit on "Gilliland's Island" should be called "SS Minnow"!
There was actually a qualifying show for Rockingham 2003 where TNT had cup qualifying and SPEED had Busch qualifying that ran long, and Steve Byrnes, Larry Mac, Hammond, Allen Bestwick, and Benny Parsons were in the booth together for a few minutes on both networks and Steve said “this could be broadcast history”
i was watching the 2022 Sonoma race this past weekend, and they had a recorded segment from Dale Jr thanking fox for their work in the early season and promoting the transition to Nbc. I think everyone in the sport realizes that should not be viewed as rivals, but rather colleagues. They are essentially on the same team. if fox does good, nbc should as well, viewers wise.
Mark Martin finishing 10th here with Gilligan's Island- impressive
Before Chase Elliott, has existed a King of the road courses
Nice race to watch thank you
One of the dumbest moves on Robby's part, but this is a prime example of why he has been in and out of this sport for years.
Robby should have definitely let Harvick go in that situation. I will about 5% say in his defense say that Harvick should have let the leaders go. But 95% Harvick did nothing wrong.
Robbie's always had more talent than brains. He could have been a champion in every series he raced if it wasn't for himself always screwing it up.
R.I.P Dale Sr., I keep saying this, Mikey won the 500, Steve park won the next race at Rockingham, then it was Jr.'s turn to return to Daytona to win.
Nice of Fox to let BP have a cameo at the end of the broadcast to pass on the coverage of NASCAR to the NBC/TNT group for the end of 2001.
Nowadays, NASCAR has to force ESPN to mention Fox/Speed and TNT coverage of a cup race
ElFuego35 that’s because it was a standard for Disney to not mention any other networks except their own.
I love how Fox did the NASCAR Winston cup series coverage. But I hated when they had to say goodbye for the year.
dude thanks for posting this. this was the first full season of nascar i watched and it really brings back memories!
MISS JEFF GORDON IN THE 24 CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's been great to see Benny Parsons as the guest.
Robby got his revenge two years later, when he passed his then-teammate Harvick for the lead racing back to a caution, which created a lot of controversy in itself, then ended up winning the race.
I think this was the first race that I actually watched from start to finish. I like the way Fox did the starting grid. I wish they still did it that way.
This was the first race I ever went to, I loved it. The broadcast was great too. I have lost my love for the sport though.
The last 17 laps is straight up cinema
won't ever forget this finish, Robby could of won the damn race if he wasn't so worried about Harvick! but of course I was glad Tony got the W!
Robby Gordon hasn't ever been known for being the sharpest tool in the shed.
Can we just take back time and go back and keep Dale Sr. Alive? and have these old style of broadcasting styles but better quality?
If time travel were real, then I'm open to it.
And keep 850hp not have all these whiny little brat so called drivers and not destroy everything that made NASCAR what it was.
The obvious irony is that Robby Gordon became Harvicks teammate, like, 3 weeks later. Fun fact, Robby won more races than Kevin in their 3 and a half years as teammates.
1:06:48 You picked a fine time to leave me, loose wheel.
I loved the Gilliland Island bit and Fox Bunch
Watching this video, I'm so happy FOX gets back the Sonoma race for the 2015 TV contract. The last few years TNT's done on the road course at least since the CoT have me longing for Mike/Larry/DW on a road course.
Chris Kreager Technically FS1 has it not FOX
Zane Marte still FOX
and also NBC's return
That race epitomized Terry Labonte's 2001 season.. Running 8th with just a few laps to go.. Falls back a little bit, then spins out, and stalls.. Instead of a solid top 10 he ends up in the 30's the last car a lap down. Smh.. In relation to the finish Let him go Robby!.lol.
rattmausch you're so right about Terry in 2001. I remember watching this as a kid was frustrated when his good day was ruined. His whole season was like that :(
I don’t know what happened to him from 2000-02, but it was a stark contrast from his 1994-99 resurgence.
His Daytona Crash The July Prior Ruined Him for 2 Years (2001-02)
Prior to watching this video the 87 car's paint job was the only thing I remember. I was 5 when I was at this race down at turn 7. I really hate that I never saw Dale Earnheardt race live.
32:47 - Larry Mac saying "it's a lot better drawing than we've been doing all year". Ain't this the first road course of that season, so if they were gonna draw a track before then, it wouldve been an oval? Except Phoenix and Darlington, how hard can that be? O yeh it's DW and Larry :P
I really miss these days.
15:59
- You're under arrest.
- For what?!
- You're having too good a time.
- For having fun?!
XD LOL
2:27:33 images that precede unfortunate events
1:10:13 The music!
they need to bring back that theme song
The nfl theme doesn't fit. Who's idea was it?
Chris Smith Apparently, FOX's....i don't like them using the NFL theme for NASCAR either
It's not France's idea. It's FOX's idea.
+Ethan Benfield They've just brought it back.
Anyone notice Harvick got all the way back up to 14th? He may have been the fastest car on the track during that last stretch, and you could see he was fast. Robbie should have just let him go.
Ya he went from 30th to 14th with 8 laps to go. He had fresher tires than everyone else though.
30:30 Gilligan's Island best fox bit ever
again how did fox get the copyright for that song one of my favourite T.V. comedy's ever I watched it on Reruns back in the day on a freeview old comedy channel
42:37 Bobby Labonte knew all too well that Robby Gordon would be too stubborn.
Man, I was at this race! I actually saw Sterling Marlin at his tent signing autographs, sadly JUST missed getting an autograph from him.
Old DW...He'd never hesitate to get behind the wheel of a car. Darrell is like really itching to get back behind the wheel in these telecasts and he's funny. I wish he'd get back to this style, he's kind of getting a little gray nowadays.
Love the intro: Home to Super Bowl 36, the Winston Cup Series...... AWESOME
Seeing BP in Fox is really cool
We miss our Dale Sr!
This was def nascar's golden age.
What a fascinating starting grid- Jarrett, Martin, Junior, and Kurt Busch on Gilligan's Island?
thx for this. shame to see robby gordon lose it
And thus, the end of FOX's debut season.
Racing back to the checkered under caution. thats the way it should be!
15:14 Jeff Hammond --> Macho Man
Hi
When i purchased the car It was sold as the Robbie Gordon car from this race. It is currently a Chev Monte Carlo body, which could have been changed at a later date, but until now I can not find any proof of it being this no 7 car. Perhaps the seller has no idea, but that is what i bought it as.
Was it a 31 car with flames on it?
Gilligan's Island, huh?
Wow, Greg Khin actually did a good job! I thought it was Robert Goulet for a moment
Jeff Hamond...MACHO, MACHO MAN!!!!! LOL :)
2:52:58 Tony Stewart will take a Pontiac to victory lane on a road course for the first time since 1982... Uhhhhh, try Rusty Wallace at Sears Point back in 1990 🤦♂️😂
He said 1992.
@@zacksutphin7111 Clearly said 82, get the wax out of your ears.
Funny because he said it right at 2:44:22
these were the good ole days of nascar on fox
i like this track
Man i almost forgot about the split pit thing!
Since DEI and Harvick won while the season was on FOX, Once NASCAR went back to Daytona it was time for Jr. ro win.
And thus Boogity boogity boogity was born.
so far we had a bunny out on the race track and now a loose tire
Does anyone know the name of the song when they showed the segment "Jeff Hammond Before FOX" 15:15 - 15:22
I dont get why Robby Gordon didn't let Kevin Harvick by. I really dont get that.
He should have had 4 victories
mark finished in the top 10 after starting 38th
Hey
Is there any chance getting a good copy of this on dvd? as i own one of the cars
Thanks
The race where Robby was being Robby
Why Was There A Smaller Pit Road In Turn 11 & 12 ?
I wonder if Robby still thinks of this race. Kevin had the new tires, but totally changed the outcome of the race. Robby could have let him go (obviously) but get out of the way Harvick!
Man that pit road was real messed up then, glad its still not like that!
Thank you for not giving away the winner in the description
18:33 Picture if you will...a power outage.....
DNQ: 27 Kenny Wallace, 96 Andy Houston*, 68 Anthony Lazzaro*, 04 Jason Leffler*.
At 47:38, Darrell mentions that Robby should drove for someone he respects, like AJ Foyt. Robby drove for AJ's IndyCar team in 1993 (10th in points with a 2nd at Mid-Ohio), and again at Indy the month before this race.
Why did Jason Leffler have a different car to qualify in for the road courses.
Which race at Sears point is the one where Jack Rabbit was on track? 2000 or 2001, anybody know???
MISS TONY STEWART IN THE HOME DEPOT CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don’t know why the booth was pulling so hard for Robby. I get that he was an underdog and had an underfunded ride, but jeez that’s as biased as I’ve ever seen Fox.
Sure
I wish they kept the carousel. But this layout is fine.
NASCAR should have more road races.
Andrew Vanderlei Your wish came true NASCAR will have its Fall Charlotte race reconfigured as a road course race in the 2018 NASCAR Cup series schedule.
Zane Marte going from 2 to 3 lol
@@tylerjohnson5336 7 With Road America Charlotte Roval Daytona Infield and Indianapolis Grand Prix in 2011
That would have been great if Robby Gordon could have won in the #7 Nations Rent car. I like that car design and I don't think it ever made it to victory lane.
and hit it boys
God, I totally forgot about the canned cheering FOX used to use. It's so obvious at the green flag.
3:00:53 the outro ❤😢
What was the song at 3:04:08
Robby its the best
0:13:19 is how i feel about Cup guys in nationwide...
What was Robby gorden on when thought this was smart
Mark Martin Was Fast
it takes about 2 minutes to do a lap and how are they boring? they need more road races, short tracks too
What did he say at 2:52:32 ?
wtf pit road screwed up if they held everyone to 18 seconds theres no way possible that you cant hold everyone to exactly 18 seconds and that time means alot in nascar
I think there was a different configuration then.
15:15 LMAO!!!!
Probably the closest that #7 car ever came to victory lane.
Geoff Bodine? Alan Kulwicki?
epzik8 Alan Kulwicki won the championship in that car.
Kulwicki Won The 1992 Championship in The #7
What's the song name on 2:15:34
Lol at 1:11:01 when Pops has the sailor hat on because of the dumb pit road they had back then.
robby is the best!
If Robby Gordon let Harvick go, he would have won easily. Made it harder than what it was.
