Have you actually watched any races in the modern days because the racing is f****** amazing now and I've been watching since I was a little kid in the 90s
The only reason they sound different is the RPM in which they're being run. Modern cars run 9,000RPM at restrictor plate tracks, where as these ran about 7,000. They still use 358 small block engines, of course with fuel injection now instead of a carburetor...and maybe the exhaust routing being a little different has something to do with it as well. I don't care so much about the sound being different. What I miss is how this generation of car(the gen 4) RACED. The overall package was fantastic, and it all went down hill with the CoT car. From that point on, NASCAR was constantly playing catch-up with rule changes trying to improve the product to equal the racing of the former car, and they never quite got there. One of the main reasons why the popularity decline in NASCAR is taking place currently.
You are so right, the modern day cars Look horrible!! The number looks stupid right behind the front tires. Nascar totally messed the sport up It is currently unwatchable!!
1:08:06 is a moment in time I'll never forget. Tony Stewart and Dale Earnhardt S.R. Side by side. Tony felt like he earned Dale's respect after his indy/600 double in 99 but when he won this race, it was especially important. It was here Tony Stewart felt like he had truly proved himself as an elite NASCAR driver. When I was 7 years old watching this live, I thought surely moments like these were only beginning. This was IMO 1 of the best NASCAR races I have ever seen and not just because smoke is my hero. It's truly heartbreaking in many many ways that all of speedweeks 2001 will be forevered shared in tragedy. I swear NASCAR taught me more about life than school ever did.
I like this restrictor plate style of racing much better than how they race now. 1) The outside lane is equally as fast 2) They dont ride in completely straight two lines where theres no good passing 3) Bump drafting is actually used
@bedwelldawson Now that's unfair. That whole last part of the race, Dale Earnhardt was defending the top 3 spots for his cars. When he got stuck three wide, Sterling was there. He had the position and Earnhardt chopped him. It was not anybody's "fault" what happened on that day. As with any fatal crash, it was a series of events that lead up to one tragic moment. To put blame on one driver is unfair.
This was nascars peek. 2001 Budweiser shootout. Earnhardt and his son against Gordon, Stewart, labonte brothers, DEI, yates, roush racing. This race was bad ass Tony drove his ass off against the man in black
"Here go the Earnhardt's!" "This is everybody else's worst nightmare. These two guys getting hooked up up front, I'm telling you it's going to be trouble."
I wish the Shootout still had this same format - Previous year`s pole winners and past winners only. None of this crap of including chase drivers, past Daytona winners, and past ROTYs.
Back then nascar was actually competing with the nfl. This video proves it my god the racing was so good. And the drivers didn’t look like teenage boys
I wish nascar would bring this style of car back in combination with the safety enhancements. Dales wreck scared them away from a great aero package. 2001 provided awesome racin
People don’t realize just how close he came to dying. Not from hitting the wall. Hitting the wall on straight aways your velocity vector never really changed like it could on the banking. But what almost killed him is a car ran into his roof and it bashed the roof in and hit him in the head knocked him unconscious. Had the car pressed that roof in 1-2 more inches it would of been a fatal blow typically its a compression fracture on the c-spine and frontal/temporal bones . They didn’t advertise that happen to him because dales death over shadowed Just how bad Tony’s wreck actually was.
@@MamaBear-es2sj Dale was actually the only one that was very aware of how he could be killed every race. He even said on his Dega wreck. Had the car not spun and took a side impact allowing the head rest to support his head. He would of “headed home”. He was the only one paying attention. Adam pettys death really affected him a lot. He wasn’t the same after that. He couldn’t bring himself to talk with Kyle until Daytona 2001. He didn’t want to acknowledge that happened because dale jr had just started racing. He got pissed at dale jr in Japan and dale jr still thinks he got mad because he passed him. He got mad because dale jr had he been 1” back when he cut in front of dale. Dale jrs back right bumper would have caught dales front left and it would have turned dale jr head on into the concrete wall. Dale was angry because dale jrs goofy ass nearly caused him to kill his child. If you have kids then you would understand that feeling.
@IamTheShermanator FOX actually replayed Dale's onboard footage and his spotter is telling him "inside" about Marlin for about 5 seconds before he wrecks. Definitely not Sterling's fault and just a unfortunate racing deal.
The 01 Daytona was a really fun race to watch If it wasn't for Dale passing away... I watch the 01 Daytona all the time & I will turn it off with about 10 to go... Its really a good race but the ending of course ruins it...
I was born and raised 15 mins west of the track and go to speedweeks every year I was 13 at the time of this race and remember being in turns 1 and 2 and never would of thought something bad would of happened to Earnhardt just days later. Still so sad to this day
Guys...theres no reason to blame or argue over how Sr. died. Fact is that he is dead and its still a huge hole in the sport. I grew up watching all the guys since the 80s....its just something we all still deal with when we speak about our sport. RIP.
ONEFUNFONE ......Dale Jr retired. Why are you so bitter about someone who wasn't even in your life? I'd hate to know how you felt about your ole lady cheating on you.... Unless it was with Dale, lol!
It's obvious from watching this race that Dale Earnhardt was still at the top of his game. He very nearly won the race too, but lost to Tony Stewart, also an excellent driver and who also had a better car.
I just turned 21 during this race my third year in The Navy we just had returned from Westpac 2000 saw this in a bar what a great week then it all came to a tragic end a week later. I'm still upset about it and 2001 as a whole seemed like a nightmare where the impossible came true so I sit here 18 years later and still cant believe it. God bless Dale the victim's of 9/11 and all the armed forces who lost there life that year. I will enjoy this race at it was still happy times up till this point. I really miss the Intimidator I pull for junior because of his down to earth personality and not afraid to show emotions and the way he carried himself thru the tragedies.
Agreed The plate racing in 2001 was some of the most exciting racing we've ever seen. The aero package from that year had a near vertical angle rear spoiler and additional roof spoiler. It was dissapointing that they got rid of that package for safety reasons, but driver safety MUST COME FIRST.
Jim Vinson i agree and im sure it was going to happen one way or another watever cuz tha belt to break it was the first time i kno of a safely belt broke and ive heard if dale sr wore a full face helmet would have saved his life i seriously doubt it i dont think it wouldnt make a differece the helmets protect ur skull not ur brain
Jim Vinson The helmet doesn't matter. He would've died either way because of the way the seat was mounted in the drivers cockpit and that the seatbelts broke. If he had the Hutchens device then he would've made it unscathed.
My dad thought we had a picture of the 2001 Daytona 500. I told dad that Dale Earnhardt didn't have Oreos for a sponser for the Daytona 500. I found out by watching this that the picture is from the 2001 Bud Shootout :D
Dude. DUDE! I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS FOREVER!!! Do you have the 2001 Duels? I'm still looking for that 0.004 or w/e it was finish between Jr. and Skinner.
@FanDale88 It's the whole race start to finish in one video. I think that's much better than one race start to finish in 7 or 8 seperate 10 minute videos. :P Easier to edit/upload. Easier to watch.
@ownwar8 Unfortunately I don't really have any other races on tape. But check Buggy1Boy's channel. He said earlier in the comments that he'd be uploading the Duels soon.
This is really where the Tony Stewart & Dale Jr. teamwork of working together at plate tracks started...Tony & Jr. would work very well together at plate tracks from 01-04
@ownwar8 I actually have the 1st duel race from 2001 on tape, but the tape cuts out 3 laps from the end of the 2nd duel race, so it's kinda pointless to upload
At Daytona the farther up the track you run the longer your right side tires will last. If you run in lane 1 they would last 15-20- If you run in 3 you can get 30. You will see the experienced people like dale running high. From lap 1. He picked up a push later on but originally he did that to save his tires.
@Infamousperson00 Yeah I've never come across any 2000 Busch series races besides those two on youtube...but man i remember that one duel really faded (i was like 5 lol) in my mind...reminded me of the 2010 duels lol...
That Oreo car was so sweet...I loved the blue outline on the 3 instead of red...man I miss Dale
His car is at the RCR Museum in Welcome NC
Ditto
You miss the car. Not the driver.
Yeah same. I just bought a 1:24th scale die cast of it and love it
The Oreo Car Was AWESOME for Dale Earnhardt!!! Glad I Own that Car. So So Sad 😭 we would lose Dale just one week later. RIP DALE!!!
The most underrated race in NASCAR history
Kurt Quist nascars peak
I could listen to that sound all day! It's just not the same anymore.
Have you actually watched any races in the modern days because the racing is f****** amazing now and I've been watching since I was a little kid in the 90s
I watch every race I can. I'm still a fan, but when Earnhardt died it took some of it away from me.
It's ironic how Ken Schrader and Dale Earnhardt started on the front row....RIP
back when NASCAR was NASCAR.. these cars screamed, the racing was intense.. miss Dale. even as a Gordon/Chase Elliot fan
In hindsight, it's chilling knowing Dale Sr had 1 week left to live and last race he'd cross the finish line not counting the 125 Qualify races.
i miss it when the cars engine screamed like this.
The only reason they sound different is the RPM in which they're being run. Modern cars run 9,000RPM at restrictor plate tracks, where as these ran about 7,000. I never got to experience a race at this time because I wasn't alive
Simplyepicman883 I agree nascar has not been the same
Simplyepicman883 IKR!!!
RetroCNY actually they were 355 ci bored out to 358
Nascar needs to bring back this body. Redesign the entire car, modernize it whatever. This is what worked the best
And WE LOVED IT
Can't do that NASCAR's based off of stock production cars they don't produce the Monte Carlo or the Dodge Intrepid
You are so right, the modern day cars
Look horrible!! The number looks stupid right behind the front tires.
Nascar totally messed the sport up
It is currently unwatchable!!
Anyone rewatching this 2001 Budweiser Shootout during covid19 in 2020??
This gave me chills seeing the black #3 car in there.
God there's something ominous now about Schrader and Earnhardt starting next to each other on row 1.
Man these cars used to sound so good!

This race made me a NASCAR fan! I was glued to the tv!
i miss Dales humorous one liners :[
"Here go the Earnhardt's!"
"This is everybody else's worst nightmare. These two guys getting hooked up up front, I'm telling you it's going to be trouble."
Miss the old style plate engine sounds....
RIP Dale Earnhardt Sr 1951-2001
Thank you for this! It was so cool seeing Bobby Labonte kicking butt in the green 18, and of course Tony Stewart back in the Home Depot #20!!!
Its great to see this race moving back to the daytime this year!!!!
I wish the Shootout still had this same format - Previous year`s pole winners and past winners only. None of this crap of including chase drivers, past Daytona winners, and past ROTYs.
what an awesome aero package..that was great racing
3:27 I think Chase was scared of him! I probably would be, too.
He was the Intimidator, after all
The good old days! This field looks like the cars I played with as a little kid
I missed this race in 2001. Been wanting to see this for 10 years. Thanks.
This was Dale’s final race in the Oreo car.
Glad I have a Diecast of Dale's Oreo Car knowing it was his Last Shootout
Really, to blame anyone is a pure act of a coward. Things happen for a reason. Dale's in a better place now.
Back then nascar was actually competing with the nfl. This video proves it my god the racing was so good. And the drivers didn’t look like teenage boys
3:34 RIP Steve Byrnes 😢
I wish nascar would bring this style of car back in combination with the safety enhancements. Dales wreck scared them away from a great aero package. 2001 provided awesome racin
Kurt Quist the drivers wanted it gone it made them super lose when you got behind a car with the roof fin.
They're so plain looking
Earnhardt had 7 days to live.
Dale Earnhardt Sr will always be Missed 😢😢
Man Watching A Fox Coverage Nascar race with Dale Earnhardt in the Race is so Crazy and weird
little did Tony Know just 1 week later he would be involved in one of the scariest crashes in NASCAR history.
The one where he gets clipped by a wing?
also little did Dale know also a week later he gets killed on the final of the 500
People don’t realize just how close he came to dying. Not from hitting the wall. Hitting the wall on straight aways your velocity vector never really changed like it could on the banking. I've been looking for this race. Thanks for uploading.
I actually kind of like the fact it was run during the day.
This is a great race.
@IamTheShermanator FOX actually replayed Dale's onboard footage and his spotter is telling him "inside" about Marlin for about 5 seconds before he wrecks. Definitely not Sterling's fault and just a unfortunate racing deal.
Been waiting for this race for ten years. Thank you!!
2002 (Due to Earnhardt's death one year earlier) was a pretty solemn year to be honest. Along with 2001.
Thanks for uploading! I've never seen this race before, Missed it when it was on...
back when the racing was good.
Thanks for uploading Sherm!
The 01 Daytona was a really fun race to watch If it wasn't for Dale passing away... I watch the 01 Daytona all the time & I will turn it off with about 10 to go... Its really a good race but the ending of course ruins it...
3:27 Future Xfinity Series champion and heir to the 24 car.
haha awesome
You see Chase Elliott at 0:53 too. He's now in the 9 as of 2018, and now he's NASCAR's Most Popular Driver 2nd generation Elliott.
Road Course Master
@@noviranger239 cup champion
@Nascarking24 the bud shootout was a daytime race until 2003.
Rcrby525 Yes, but it was techincally still a day race if it rained out on Saturday.
I was born and raised 15 mins west of the track and go to speedweeks every year I was 13 at the time of this race and remember being in turns 1 and 2 and never would of thought something bad would of happened to Earnhardt just days later. Still so sad to this day
lol Larry @2:34, "That mande-tary pit stop"
hahaha yes and remember Larry and his "Los Vegas"?? lol
haha yea
He is from Bama can't help it
X-tree lap

The helmet, the seatbelts, and the way the seat was mounted in the drivers cockpit contributed to the death in the accident.
This made me cry a lot damn it why did sr have to pass away
I know right? Why did Dale have to die? :(
:( rip definitely an emotional race to watch
ONEFUNFONE ......Dale Jr retired. Why are you so bitter about someone who wasn't even in your life? I'd hate to know how you felt about your ole lady cheating on you.... Unless it was with Dale, lol!

Earnhardt should have won this.
The GM Goodwrench/Oreo car for Dale Earnhardt was the last paint scheme he ever raced
actually for the 500 it was just the traditional GM Goodwrench car, no OREO involved
Hey
Michael DiGiacomo
+Dustin Krueger The last car he finished in alive. the regular Goodwrench is the one he died in.
Adam Evarts Yeah losing it on the final lap to Sterling Marlin.
2001-2004 were probably nascars best years in my opinion (other than earnhardt's death of course)

I'm sure Stewart forever treasures this day that he got to race and beat Earnhardt for the win.
So weird to see daylight under the cars.
ReturnTrip that hasn’t been seen since what...07?
they moved it to night because it fits better, and because they wanted to promote it as a "short track racing on a superspeedway"
@Buggy1Boy Do you have the Truck and Busch races from 2001 as well?
@Nascarking24 2001 and 2002 races were scheduled during the daytime.
NASCAR on FOX is great now. It was even more amazing THEN.

Great post. :) Do you happen to have the 2003 Gatorade 125s???
Never hear that sound from those cars again
The Shootout is a great race. When did they start racing at night?
This was before the pit crew helmet rule.
In the background when they are talking to elliot, gordon and SR. Rock you like a hurricane was playing. Good music back then
@ThreeRiversRC I believe the first was 2003.
anyone know why Mark's car was black for the shootout?
@MayoDidDie why on earth do they use the nfl theme lol
The fact that Ken Schrader and Dale Earnhardt led the field to the green 7 days prior. :'(
Man I miss this era of nascar! Now the format is horrible! Take it back to the Winston cup days!
1st live coverage of the Shootout, 1st NASCAR race (though non points) for Fox.
@ownwar8 I actually have the 1st duel race from 2001 on tape, but the tape cuts out 3 laps from the end of the 2nd duel race, so it's kinda pointless to upload
i miss these cars and pack racing where u didn't over heat and go to 2 car draft
when racing was great. and cars sounded so good
Well said...
@54:00 I am not sure what DW is talking about, but it sure does look like Big E was pointing at Gordon to give him more room down there.
so agree
At Daytona the farther up the track you run the longer your right side tires will last. If you run in lane 1 they would last 15-20- If you run in 3 you can get 30. You will see the experienced people like dale running high. From lap 1. He picked up a push later on but originally he did that to save his tires.
that outside line was the place to be in this race
