Apparently he spent the entire audition process using only his American accent - the director of House didn't realise he was actually a well-known British comedian until after he had been cast.
Yep. It took for a Friends episode to realize he was English, when he was on a plane in a scene with Jennifer Aniston. It was hilarious. Dr. House before he even knew it.
@Drunken Knight Well my dad knew him from back in the day in the Blackadder sitcom series etc. But he did not watch Friends, since it was after his time. But when I was watching that particular episode where he made a cameo appearance around the same time House was on the air, did I for the first time find out in surprise that he was English instead. Not American. But he does the accent so dang well.
It’s amazing how Hugh is able to change his personality so quickly into a complex character like house. He was perfect for this role, he truly understood the character.
Hugh Laurie's greatest role was in Blackadder as The Prince Regent / King George IV. He is fantastic as House too. Most Non-Brits don't actually realise that he isn't American and is in fact a well known British Actor.

That was a joke, he was referring to his appearance. He was actually shooting Flight of the Phoenix and that's why he looked all scruffy for the video. They liked it so much that House to this day still has the scruffy face. :D

ER? No try St. Elsewhere which basically re defined the medical drama. House has more in common with that show with quirky humor, accuracy of Hospital life and medicine, and great character driven drama.
It's interesting because when he received the script for this audition it was called "Untitled". It's hard to think that it could be being called anything but "House" now. He absolutely steals the show.
