From the small to the big one, you always need to increase the speed to overcome the weight.

yes, faster than small gliders, but still relatively slow... it's only 1,4kg for 4m wingspan.

    0:58 effective
damn must be nice to have a massive glider, don't have to worry about visual loss in a boomer thermal
    it just floats damn

Hi Jacob, all my other gliders are max 1,5m, I flew them for years and was and I am still very happy with them. Both have pro's and contra's.
The difference in efficiency between small and big gliders is massive, it's much more than I expected. and yes a small glider you can't see them 100 meter away but they are cheaper, easier to handle (transportwise).

@@yannickver wonder if it's reynolds numbers regarding bigger planes

@@jacobdavidcunningham1440 I'm not expert, but yes something like that: bigger Aspect ration are possible and increased chords so higher reynolds numbers.

ummm... the vert-stab is significantly taller than it needs to be. the stab is, therefore, making relatively more Drag.

i'm not a glider design expert, but I have the feeling that most F5j gliders have the same type of stab.
I like it, can thermal very very tight spirals.

I've got a feeling the guys that designed it have a pretty good idea of what they're doing.
The correct response is "wow that thing flies really well", it's not like this is a home built glider that he decided how large the surfaces would be.

I asked the designer of this plane : why such big rudder ?
answer: not needed for flight or thermalling, but in F5J competition there is a spot landing at the end of the 10 minute work time.
At that moment those big gliders fly at very low speed and they need that rudder authority (and elevatot too) to have the maneuvrability make a correct spot landing... So they need it for the landing in competition.
