Great tips. Test blocks are essential to test what size seam is needed (scant v. full) for thread/fabric/pressing choices. Love Microtex needles and buy them in bulk for a good value. Also on any block where you have an angle (flying geese, triangle in squares), you need a full 1/4" to get the clearance need--so scant should be avoided. While I started with Aurofil 50wt, I now use Wonderful cottonized polyester DecoBob which is an 80 wt thread (with a 10 microtex). This thread is fine but as strong as 50wt and is a godsend with complex blocks.

80/12 for the most part works well for me!
