      Recurve can be very different. I shot recurve Hoyt Olympic Style exclusively for years, and my initial provided set of aluminums that I mainly used in the 80s to 1990s were super slim, bullet target point only arrows with real (poly) shorter feather fletchings. They were really, really slim, but again, this was for some reason the standard for Olympic Recurve at that time, and for youth shooters. Looks like the new compounds are a whole other thing. Especially hunting vs. target shooting, of course. I don't recall if my arrows were Easton or what, they were so slim you couldn't even see markings on them, I do recall that, so maybe not. I also used the same arrows for outdoor and indoor shoots, although later I was mainly only shooting indoor, so I never switched sets of arrows by then.

    So very thorough going through so much vital information, Sean! A final unasked for tidbit for new target archers, if you are shooting outdoors with any potential for wind, a larger diameter lightweight arrow will see a greater effect from the wind. But for indoors, obviously, you are spot on. Thanks so much for another awesome video!

    Hi Sean, great information that you share. I love it. I used to experiment with fletching materials and insert concepts. Never went to market with any of them. One thing I can suggest to you in explaining the friction aspects of a wider, thicker arrow, no matter whether it's carbon or aluminum. A wider arrow has more total surface area than a more narrow arrow. More total surface area provides more area of friction in measurable units to occur as the arrow passes through a target, foam or flesh. Keep up the good work! God Bless.

    Noob question: why DO you need spine in a center shot shelf? I mean a crossbow bolt is stiff as hell too.
    In my understanding spine was needed with traditional bows where the arrow has to travel around the handle.

    • @seansoutdoors
      @seansoutdoors  4 года назад

      When an arrow is shot from a bow it bends dramatically (archers paradox). Finger shoot it bends to the side, release shooter it bends down. A crossbow bolt doesn't bend because there is a solid platform under it the whole time.

      As an engineer, what did you think about the idea of a heavier arrow for better penetration for hunting. To me, this does not make sense unless the draw weight is turned up. momentum equals mass times velocity, so it seems that a heavier arrow would travel slower, thus the momentum at impact would be the same either way

    Bryan Zellinsky North Vancouver Enjoyed your discussion on the Physics of the arrow and it’s intentional flight. I had my head rapped around building recurve take down bows and now the arrow. Your discussion on the forces and the result was the best descriptions on the subject. Thanks I am a subbed viewer

    Great video as usual..I may be a little "old school," even worked at "Bear Archery" in Grayling, Michigan about 40 years ago. I would rather IMO shoot an arrow too stiff (if in doubt) than the light side. Your spot on about kinetic energy. Most Midwest hunters probably shoot 90% of there deer under 35 yards. I shoot a G5 Montec 100gr. on a 27 inch 340 easton arrow at 60 lbs. I do have my 50 and 60 yard pins spaced apart a little more as you mentioned. I realize I could go with the lighter arrow..but am happy with this as it is. Also, I should mention I am shooting a moderate solo cam bow. What do you think?

    One thing I will say, KE means nothing. Momentum is what we are after.. Don’t get caught up in the speed game.. Id never shoot an deer with anything less than 500g, knowing what I know now. a heavier arrow outperforms a lighter arrow EVERY time.. No such thing as too stiff of a spine! I love your comparison you make with the baseball and wiffle ball! Spot on!

    • @seansoutdoors
      @seansoutdoors  6 лет назад

      Yeah, some people are like you and like 500 grains. I have crushed deer for years at 350 grains with the right tip, but I am hunting with 425 grains at the moment simply because that is what companies gave me to work with, lol. But, I have such a long draw that it really adds to the punch. For shorter draw lengths I usually recommend around 450 grains or so, but like you, some prefer 500 or more. God bless ya.

      @waltcolemanblows 6 лет назад +1

      Sean, I shoot a 54lb elite with a 27.5 inch draw. What would be my perfect arrow weight for hunting? 6 grains per pound would be 324 grains. 400 grain arrow seems way too much?

    • @seansoutdoors
      @seansoutdoors  6 лет назад

      324 grains will not give you very penetration. If you have 27.5 inch draw, I would use a cut on contact broad head and use over 400 grains. You will have more pin gap, but you will have a lot better penetration. At 324 grains, you could lose deer if you hit a bone and don't get good enough penetration.

      @optimuscrime608 6 лет назад

      waltcolemanblows Guys shoot 40-50lb recurves and longbows with 600+ grain arrows and blow through animals.. Don’t worry so much about speed. Shot placement is key.. The heavier the arrow the better! Like I said you can never have too much penetration, and there is no such thing as “overspend”.. With your setup I’d be a 500g

    Hi Sean. Recent subscriber here, very much enjoying (lots of catching up to do) viewing your videos, even these older ones, and learning a lot about the many factors that go into setting up, tuning, arrow selection, etc. of compound bows. I would be really appreciative if you might find a bit of time to address a couple questions for me. I have an older Prime. Not real old....2017. It's a Centergy with the #4 cams which make it a 28.5" DL. I'm pretty new to bows and bow hunting so have much to learn but i'm excited about getting out and experiencing this new challenge. Truthfully i don't know for sure if this bow is exactly right for me...i bought it used. Admittedly not the best way to get into a bow and bow hunting, but it sounded like it was about right as a decent starting point. I'm 6 feet tall and from the measuring i've done i believe my draw length is around 29 inches, so it shouldn't be too bad. Just built myself a draw board but haven't yet had the chance to put my bow on it and check the exact numbers.
    I have some arrows (pre-fletched and with nocks in) that i bought just stock uncut lengths (a couple different brands and lengths), but haven't yet cut any of them down and put the inserts in. So that's one of my main questions..."finally" he says, lol... with a bow at 28.5" DL and knowing that one doesn't want the broad head too close to your grip hand, what would you recommend as a good length to cut to? I was thinking 29.5", from insert to nock throat where the string will sit. Thoughts? I guess that's really the only question i have at the moment. When i began this novel i was intending to ask about spine and total arrow weight, FOC, and all that good stuff, but realized there are so many good vids out there on the topics (including yours), that i'm going to just have to experiment a bit and figure that out myself. But if you have any helpful thoughts/tips on that you want to share, i'm all ears. Just for interests sake; 6 of my arrows are Carbon Express, Adrenaline, 350 spine at 9.9 gpi, currently at 31 inches long, front to nock throat. Thanking you muchly in advance Sean, all the best and God bless you and yours.

      Gust draw back with one on and have someone mark the arrow just past the riser and cut them all to that length.

    I've always used wood! Cheap Chinese wood arrows came in vogue when POC became hard to get, but my full, straight grained arrows, properly spined for my 70# recurve, which hammers the nock end at full draw, will handle any 70# compound that more slowly accelerates an arrow.
    Definitely my broadhead in front of my hand!!

    • @seansoutdoors
      @seansoutdoors  6 лет назад +2

      It is extremely dangerous to shoot a wooden arrow off of a compound. It should never be done because the wood can split and splinter and go right through your hand. If you do that, please stop now before you end up hurting yourself very badly.
