I played the original back in the day before the Vita was released. Never finished it, so hype to binge this for days after release, plus achievements have been added. So hype!!
So the DMW mechanic at a dash of randomness to the game by randomly rolling slots or cards. Each card represents somebody that happens to be in Zack's thoughts. Certain combinations or a triple end up both giving you an attack of some sort as well as potentially giving you a memory to play. Events from Zack's life are played out and often some of these scenes are exclusive to the DMW in which you literally cannot see them any other way. So what happens is as a real soldier, that draws strength from his memories. At the time this thing probably didn't make much sense but overall ranging from Advent children to basically every compilation game with the exception of before Crisis has had the theme of memories dreams and the power you can draw from them. George was a bit more obscure because rather than playing with like distant memories they really like to play with recent ones in which case you will be told something and then later it will be contradicted and it will seem as if Vincent does not notice because he literally does not notice. Time memory and everything else is being altered as you play during dirge and so events are getting changed you will see an event and then somebody will tell you about the events and the thing is they don't match up but Vincent takes it as facts because it's it's now fact. Anyway the DMW mechanic please interesting roles during various battles and the entire purpose of the mechanic happens to go in full force in the final fight giving you every thought that goes into his mind during his last moments every bit of strength every thing that could possibly be important to him all culminate together for his final stand as he fights against impossible odds and loses, not because I'm whispers are watching over to make sure it happens but because it's too much. During remake the whispers are not there to make sure it happens, for the ultimania the four whispers are there to prevent it, all the one circling Midgar are there to keep Zack the f*** out. The change in remake happened in remake. I do not believe we will see that change happen in Crisis core, because if we do it's sort of defeats why it was different in remake. Chris core tells us how to past was and is supposed to be. Rebirth will tell us how it changed, leaving us to figure out what is fact and what is fiction. By telling us the story of Crisis core we are going to learn the story of what actually happened at nibelheim before Cloud gets to tell us what he believes to be true. I believe this time it's being done on purpose. With the original game we learned Cloud side then we learned that it was a lie. Here we're going to learn what the truth is first and then hear the lie. As for remake, every situation in which Zack was supposed to speak to us for the ultimania Omega written by nomura, ended up having an additional Sephiroth scene. Every time Zack was supposed to come up he did not, because Zack is not in cloud's memories, Zack is not dead during the whole of remake... The whispers exist across time, where they are is past/present/future. Reeve talks about the Shinra building swirl of whispers as something that has happened every single night since the death of the president in Dirge! Literally giving us part of the ending of remake back then. Crisis core is also reusing all the old cinematics, so Zack's death is basically assured there. But, in the planet's memories remade (aka remake), Zack is prevented from dying. And changes to the memory is like altering time, it simply becomes the new reality. It's less destiny and more how it happened versus how it is was recalled compared to how it is remembered now.
Since you haven't played the original game... Rerecording has two purposes in my mind before you actually get to your two ideas. The first is how terrible the original audio was, the audio was incredibly compressed which is actually what gave Zach did distinct voice that we all miss so bad because the actual voice actor does not quite sound like that it is the compression that adds this extra to his voice. There's also the fact that it is extremely likely that we are going to be seeing many of these characters again in rebirth. The world preview book for remake specifically goes out of its way to detail every little thing that the other Turks have been doing. Right down to the fact that they have killed Jade weapon on the exact same night that the first bombing mission happens. Every event relating to before crisis is detailed, including a huge smattering of what exactly happens between October 1st and 6th, which Zack guy is September 17th, and Cloud arrived at midgar on October 1st and made it to sector 7 slums on October 4th. So a quick rundown of what happened: the Turks not yet knowing that Zack has died, are given the emission to find and save Zack by any means necessary. October 2nd or 3rd, the leader of the Turks and the leader of avalanche (his daughter) are both "executed" by Tseng. It happens in sector 5. October 3rd, cissinei (important to Zack) and another turk are near the church, they are ambushed and put into a high speed chase by avalanche's anti-soldier ravens, this leads them up the train tracks and into midgar's streets and freeway. October 5th, in order is put out to execute all but three of the Turks as traitors. They all leave Midgar. October 6th, Tseng, Reno, and Rude are put on trial. Rufus puts forth an argument exonerating them. And it happens October 4th is when Cloud ends up in sector 7. This means that most likely Zach arrives in the church in remake October 3rd, the church would naturally be filled with a lot of upset people because some prick in a suit decided to shoot two in the head in the middle of the f****** sector... Naturally I don't imagine Harris would be at the church at this time for obvious reasons, you really don't want to be anywhere near the Turks when they're using guns to kill one of their own. And this is most likely the time that we happen to see Zack, likely moments before the whole chasing that would likely draw him away and possibly have him leave his sword behind with Cloud for safety reasons, not like cloud is in any condition too suddenly jump into a high-speed vehicle down chase.
