    I'm a huge fan of the 80's and the style that accompanied that magic era. The mist filter is something that brings me back to that, it softens the image a tiny bit, the mist filter adds some bloom, some flare to the shot. It's magical, it's specific and it's something I really love on certain projects. These filters are also neutral density filters at the same time, so you avoid stacking and save money. I'd highly recommend both, they really come down to personal preference as a mist is very subjective, you either love the bloom or you don't, you prefer the raised blacks or you don't. It's your choice, but do let me know in the comments below which ones get you all hot and bothered.
    If you have any questions at all about these Variable ND Mist filters - Freewell VND x Mist vs PolarPro Mist Edition II, post them below in the comments and I'll make sure I get back to you.

    I really have a hard time choosing between these 2 filters, Polarpro and Freewell. They have both advantages and disadvantages, and of course, that would defend your personal choice. I view some videos that polar pro that has a little brownie's color during the very bright blue sky which being mention on some other youtube videos. Considering the price range, I opted for Freewell. price wise and build quality is the same as Polarpro. Thank you for your great comparison. It help us a lot in choosing which is which.

    Thanks for the Video, Love the bloom on the Tiffen, however, I purchased the the 4-pack PolarPros 82mm VND ver II + Mist Filters, the PolarPro, the P/P seems to be more controlled when it comes to bloom, the sale that were on the filters made it worth it, although unfortunately still expensive. after watching your video, I feel I made a very good investment on my purchase

      They are quite similar, build quality goes to the PolarPro, glass quality is identical to my eye, so both excellent, and bloom is a little different on each, the Freewell blooms a little more hazy whilst the PolarPro has a smaller, more controlled bloom. Both look great, but like I said, it's up to you.

      I've used those in the past on set, and I've got to tell you the difference is quite substantial. These keep the image really sharp all over, the Lee soften it up going up in the set, totally different filters in my opinion, there are cheap alternatives, we used to use stockings of grease, it all works, it just depends on the quality you're aiming for.

    If anyone is interested I have been a wedding photographer for 35yrs. I have always used a Lee filters pro mist - but now I use a Fujifilm GFX100 - after ditching Hass X series - and I have one of the PM VNF Mist II's - it is better. I use a step up ring to get from my 50mm but the rest of my lenses are 77 - so it all works no fuss - also I now have access to much wider apertures which menas I can use 50 ISO - but in harsh daylight with added fill flash I don't have to worry about fiddly ND's they are the dogs wotsits

      @@PhillipSkraba, @shivam kumar,
      Yes there is a step up ring (different sizes) + VND (1.5-10 stops) + CP filters combined from H&Y called Revoring. They are finishing up and should send their Kickstarter/Indiegogo around March/April. I assume afterwards, it’ll be available to the public.
      The only problem is that any focal length less than 70mm, you may see X patterns from 5 stops and above. They plan on making a magnetic add-on 3-stop filter that allows you to start at +3 stops as zero stops. For example, if you start at +1.5 stops, with the add-on, you start at +4.5 stops and can go up to +7.5 stops without any X patterns on focal lengths less than 70mm.
      Phillip, hope you can compare the H&Y Revorings with the rest of the ones you currently have. Phillip Bloom has a video on it.
      The other negative is it’s big but the convenient all-in-one outweighs the negative for me. I should be getting it sometime in March.

    Ooh man, not liking that colour cast on either of them - just fix it in post is just setting you up for pain and makes choices like white balance a little redundant. The Tiffen BPM clearly destroys them both. I have the K&F concept 1/8 mist filter with no colour cast. Thinking might be better to stack a high quality variable or fixed ND with a high quality mist instead. Thanks for the video though, very handy.

    Hi mate, can I use this as only ND filter with out mist? So that I don't I can have both mist and non mist in one product. Sorry, I am a beginner and this may be a silly question. Great video.. Thanks a ton.

    • @PhillipSkraba

      I'm afraid these are mist and vnd, if you'd like to use them separately you'd need to stack. So a mist filter and screw a vnd on top of that, it's not ideal, but that's how we do it. Anytime!

      @@PhillipSkraba thanks! This is just a mist filter, not VND right? Do you think a mist VND is fine as the only nd? I wonder if I will not want the mist on my filter occasionally, how do you feel about that?

    • @PhillipSkraba
      @PhillipSkraba  3 года назад

      That's correct, just mist. It is THE mist filter. Well, I wouldn't and don't want mist all the time, so the mist vnd is great when you need it and want it, otherwise it's a little useless.

    • @PhillipSkraba

      I've done it, works in a similar way, but on wider lenses it will vignette, which is a bummer, so then this type of hybrid filter works great.

    • @PaulKentSkates
      @PaulKentSkates 2 года назад

      I much prefer the opening shot sequence over the closing ones by a lot. It's funny because I always lift my blacks when grading too. But I like the understated quality of the PPM2 it feels more natural. That and I can always lift blacks or add a tiny bit more bloom in post, but it can be iffy at best trying to reduce it.
      I'm not looking for a special effects filter. I want something that is usable most of the time to reduce digital harshnesh.
      I really appreciate your video comparison.

    The PolarPro is more like a Tiffen 1/8, not 1/4. The professional Tiffen comes in 1/8, 1/4. 1/2, 1 and 2. None of the other Brands offer that professional choice when You i.e. want to react on too strong highlights.

      @@PhillipSkraba Now that you say that, its possible, that my playback resolution was lower than I thought.
      But yet, at whatever resolution I ended up having, one remained sharper than the other...
      Now I'm going to have to watch it again lol...
      Maybe, if you watch your video at like 480p, its possible that you see a difference - which could be irrelevant or not. If footage is the same at high resolution, but at low resolution one looks better than the other - I guess one filter would then be better for low resolution content?

    • @PhillipSkraba
      @PhillipSkraba  3 года назад +1

      It's possible that's just an optical illusion depending on how the mists bloom in different ways. The Freewell has a totally different bloom than the PolarPro, it's really down to taste and your needs for a certain project. However, on footage I've taken since, both are as sharp as each other, the PolarPro does have a more controlled bloom though. I am currently working on a mist filter comparison, as soon as I get the last mist I'm waiting for I'll start filming comparisons and that'll be out asap.

      You’re totally here to watch me talk, otherwise I’d radio show. I think these examples are sufficient, the Freewell blooms a lot more in a slightly different way, the PolarPro is more controlled in its bloom. Like I said, it’s very much an artistic choice, I like both. Oh yeah, don’t put anything cheap on your lens or it’ll be a mess. All the best!
