    Can someone tell long term opinion about these filters? (I never know when the video is sponsored and can't tell the truth)

    • @WesPerry
      @WesPerry  4 года назад +20

      Not exactly sponsored, just review samples provided.
      I’m still using these filters to this day, without issue.
      But from what I gather from other responses, there’s a lot of copy to copy variation amongst them. Some poorly calibrated and able to achieve an X pattern at the end. Just between my two, seemingly identical filters, there is actually a huge difference in their exposure range.
      Additionally, Amazon seems to be selling all the returns as new, which isn’t helping things either.
      Oh, and also, I had a chance to test them on an a7Riv. And while they hold up great at the 24Mp level, they show a clear image degradation at 61Mp.
      So that’s my long term opinion. Still solid, but apparently you’ve gotta be careful about getting a good copy.

      @@WesPerry Do you know why yours was so good? Cause they took the glass from another high end brand and just placed it into their rings. Samples in China are always done like this. When others actually buy the product, they get their own homemade glass that sucks. And you helped them make a great review of some " as usual, cheap chinese cr*p".

      A lot of Chinese companies seem to be coopting various industries with surprising quality. One of the side effects of all the major companies outsourcing their manufacturing to third party facilities in China, India and Indonesia: it grants those factories the facilities and know how to produce similar products for much less to other “local” companies.

    I had a Hoya 82mm variable ND Filter and yesterday I bought the K&F variable ND Filter.
    The reasons:
    1. Hoya has an X even when I haven‘t past the limit
    2. Hoya changes WB too much. That‘s what makes colour correcting a big video annoying.
    3. The Hoya only goes to ND 400, which is not enough to set aperture to 2.8 and lowest iso on very bright sunlight, while remaining the 1/60 shutter for video :/ . The K&F goes to ND 2000. :D
    4. And I didn‘t know that but it‘s sharper as you said :)

      Hmm. Very odd. Most of my lenses were stepped down from the 82mm filter size, but my 16-35 is 82, so it didn’t even have any wiggle room. Just a little bit of X right at the highest ND level.
      There seems to be a Lot of copy of copy variation going on, judging from the comments. But I tested four copies, and while one of them is slightly off the others with regards to exposure, they all resisted x-ing more or less the same. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      They all have lens cap scoring on the inner diameter, but only the CPL fits the size it screws into. The VND looks like it fits a size up (I don’t have any caps bigger than my filter size to test, though), and the VND+CPL looks like it takes something enormous. Haha

    Technically Polar Pro took inspiration from SLRMagic who were the first, to my knowledge, to do a rotating CPL VND with hard stops; however, it's great to see more companies have started to use the same basic technique. I think the one thing I would give to polar pro is that they have two ND ranges to cover almost the entire ND range, where as all these others only cover the lower end.

      On Alibaba (not AliExpress), they're sometimes straight-up advertised as the "green" variant or the "blue" variant.
      The Green ones are usually more expensive, so I believe they're to better somehow.... maybe? just ordered the 58mm nd w/polorizer for my canon g30 camcorder that has 58mm thread. I have a flag matt box to stop light from hitting the lens on my rail system so a lens hood is something I'm not concerned about. My Canon lens is a wide lens 35mm from 26.8 to 576mm. I do have build in nd filters that kick in at f1.8 to f2.8. Goes up past 4+fstop then the nd filters kick in, pissed off in menu canon only has nd on automatic and off. So I have no control but this new filter will change this. I want to keep the lens at 1.2 and do headshots with beautiful blur and the only way I can do this is with a product like this. My camcorder is the equivalent of the canon c100 with its features minus canon slog. I bought this camcorder for the Canon lens. I was torn between stabilization and the option and to change lenses... as I own 3 canon lenses from my Canon t3i days. If you were to buy this lens it would be 1000 bucks. I run 422 8bit 1080p out into atomos recorder as it has same output as the c100. The c100 keeps dropping in price I might just buy one..... I love canon color science. Nice video and great camera work.

      I've been using the Polar Pro rubber caps to cover mine when out and about. They're not super convenient, but definitely better than a scratched lens. Just have to get a cap that's the right size to squeeze over the filter.

      @@WesPerry Alright, so I found out that for the 67mm variable ND filter (ND2 to ND32), the front filter thread has a 72mm diameter, so I bought a cheap 72mm snap-on lens cap on eBay. • @WesPerry

      Just a little yeah. I think it cheats and gets around this some by being oversized. It stretches out beyond the edge of most lenses. Which is inconvenient for covering, but better for image quality. And the hard stop prevents you from going over the limit and totally botching things up.

    Thanks for this video! I’m a bit new to photography (other than using a phone for most of my life for photos!), and purchased the K&F Variable ND8 - 2000 filter, and noticed that ‘crosshairs’ thing at the very maximum range, it sounds like that it can be kind of a “thing” however with ND filters being pushed out of their range? I’m gonna have to practice with it more.. 😂

    • @WesPerry
      @WesPerry  4 года назад

      I thought that range was a typo until I looked it up! I would be a bit skeptical of that one, seems like a bit too much ground to cover. And yeah, you’ve got to avoid the extreme ends of an ND to avoid “the dreaded X”. The ones I have have a hard stop before much X appears.

    May I ask question about this filter, isn't it good for a handheld video shooting with people in the shot please? for what i know about CPL filter is to block some unwanted light by adjusting the angle of the filter, for a still shot it can be controllable, what if for a handheld shot that will moving from one point to another point or from indoor to outdoor shot? isn't is good or harm for a video shooting? lee mary while it can help a lot of those things, I find that quick changes of the ND levels are difficult while filming, since the whole CPL ring spins, when you try to adjust the ND filter level, the whole thing tried to turn, so it’s essentially a two hand job to get it smoothly dialed in properly.
