I think we're all waiting on those two :) Should be soon enough. The 790 has made plenty of appearances already even here in the states. So my guess is around November will be the official release.
Nice calm and logical review! As you say the 990 is more basic, lighter, lower power(revs) and off road oriented.. The newer ones are more tech/gadgets and road bikes. Comfort vs offroad ability.. Cant have it all! A big 800-1000cc "adventure bike" is not really a offroader, get a 250-400cc enduro then.. And for "touring" on highways long and comfortable a old Honda Transalp 600 is enough to, I drove through the whole of Europe on one, from Denmark to southern Portugal (6000km one way) and back, with luggage and passenger (one way).. No problems! Much is just a mindset and preferences, not the same for all.. Newer is not always better (and definitely more expensive!) As long as you are happy and enjoy your bike-ride!
This is what I was looking for, to get an idea whether the 1090 Adventure R I am considering would compare favorably to my beloved 990 Adventure. Thanks!
@@kdemotorsports I rode an 890 Adventure R a few days ago, expecting it to feel similar to the 990, but it felt drastically different to me, and, I'm disappointed to say not in a good way.
@@paultannahill5043 that’s interesting I haven’t ridden the 890 version. The one thing that you’ll have a difficult time duplicating is the low down grunt of the 990 even the 1090 didn’t have the same right off idle pull as the 990. Best of luck.
I've got a 2013 990 Baja (with mods) and a new 1290 SAR which is relatively stock. I've ridden the 990 5k miles this past year (70% dirt) and the 1290 2500 miles (50% dirt) since April 2018. My brother has the 1090. We swapped bikes in Utah and I've ridden my 990 on the WABDR and BC, Death Valley, etc.all with my buddies who also have 990s. The 990 is the better dirt oriented bike. With Superplush suspension its amazing in the dirt. It's a real hooligan and way less refined than the 1090 and 1290. My 1290 is fine off road but I'm way more comfortable on the 990 in the dirt. It feels smaller and more manageable. The 1290 is amazing on the street with occasional offroad jaunts (single track thru fire roads). I'd agree the 1090 is great off road but it's hard to beat the 990 when your mainly doing dirt. The 1290 is better on the road than the 1090. Decide where you'll spend most of your time riding and pick your orange. PS - I've got a deposit on the 790 ADV and wondering if it will replace my 990.
I just bought a tricked out 1090 on eBay, it will be here in a week. Wmr suspension. I'm gonna ride it probably 75 percent dirt. I almost bought a 07 990 for 7000. Now I'm tripping balls about buying the 1090. lol!! Either way I'm gonna rally
That was another thing I should’ve mentioned in the video. The sound of the 990 is awesome. I definitely couldn’t leave the stock exhaust on there if I had one.
Larger tank?! Who can and want to drive longer without a break anyway? Stop, eat, have a look around, stretch your legs and fill upp.. Bring a spare if you need. Get a truck with a 200liter tank if you just want to drive all day..
That was a good review I thought I was going to disagree with you but for the most part I agreed. The 1090 is better on the road and the 990 is better in the dirt. All of my 990s have had suspension work done but they are INCREDIBLE in the dirt. If I thought I could turn the 1090R into a killer in the dirt I would get one. Good vids
@@GreatwhiteADV I noticed you're in Utah and I'm headed out there in the next month or so. Ping me if you're going to be around it would be cool to see that 990 in person. BTW Loved that new video of yours with the group ride that was cool. Nice footage and drone shots in there, really liked it.
Good Day Kdemotosports That would be great to get together. I just closed on a second home this week and Im preparing to remodel and move in. And my wife is expecting of first child soon so needless to say life is crazy busy right know. Please let me know when you will be in town and maybe we can meet at my shop and talk BIKES for a bit. Cheers
Iam going next year for a very long ride from Europe to Tibet would you trust the 1090 for that kind of long ride or go for ex Africa twin or something els ? Cheers for great vids
Thanks for the compliment on the videos. As far as the bike choice for that trip. I'd probably say the Honda. There will be a lot you'll have to deal with on a trip like that so I'd personally opt for the most reliable motorcycle possible to leave bandwidth to deal with the challenges of the trip itself. Enjoy that sounds like a big one!
kdemotorsports ok thx for that view i been testning the 1090 and like it and will test the africa soon . Maybee the new 790 coming be the best choise as its lighter but a new Model is risky i guess ...
I would not use either for that tripp.. Get a used older and more simple bike! Less expensive and easier to fix yourself (or to find someone who can).. Air cooled and carburettor.. My old trusty -92 Honda Transalp was fine on a 14000km trip trough EU.. No extra maintenance or failure!
I’m reading this question in 2021 and think about the Yamaha T700 or even a Royal Enfield Himalayan like Noraly from the Itchy Boots RUclips channel did. I’m wondering what you finally decided 👍
Great point, once and only once did the warning light ever come on. It was a situation where I had just fueled the bike started it, pulled to a parking spot shut it off then after just 1 minute restarted. So I'm assuming it was just a series of events that led to that one time and it hasn't been back since. I'll keep everyone posted as to whether or not it shows up again.
Nice review. Ya I can't wait to see the 700 or what ever it turns out to be.

You’re welcome although since this video I had the 790 Adventure R and I do think that’s a closer match to the 990. Thanks for watching!

I wish the tank was larger on the 990. Really cool with the two tank fillers and nice sound of the dual exhaust. Maybe KTM will update it some point.

Thanks that means a lot to me especially coming from you. You have some of the best videos I’ve seen featuring the 990.
Thanks... I love seeing others with the same passion as me. Keep up the good work!
You too! And thanks for watching!

790 Looks very promising indeed, thanks for watching.
You didn't mention if the display warning ever came back since the 1st warning. Did it? (Hoping it was just a lost gremlin)

990 best
I have never heard anyone say a 990 feels lighter and more agile. Interesting.
Relative to the 1090 they definitely feel much smaller and more like a dirt bike. Now that I have the 790 it feels more like the 990.
Not to mention the dry weight of the 990 is more than a 1090.
1090 isn’t an upgrade it’s a compromise
oh yeah...ktm for sure have some quirks, mine has electrical. Wiring leaves a lot to be desired.
My 990 is a cable throttle!
