- One of the enduring debates that has yet to be defined is which decade of music reigns supreme: 80's or 90's? Our goal is to settle that debate through our reaction video channel while also delving into the music (and videos) spanning across all decades from the 1950’s through today. Our channel is all about enjoying the experience, with no second takes or edits.
From the outset, our aim was to craft something distinct and refreshingly unique. We didn't want to limit ourselves to mere reactions to music; instead, we aspire to share stories, life experiences, and extend an invitation to our family, friends, and fans to be a part of this experience.

Hello Greg [ Gen X Reactions ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Buenos Aires in 2012, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of a wild Argentinian audience. At this concert Floor was in the band for just about 2 and a half months, joining them in the middle of a world tour as an emergency replacement.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

First and foremost, apologies for the delay in our response.. Michelle and I were on a mini-vacation and almost immediately upon our return, she fell ill and remains resting even now as I type this message. Thank you so much for sharing the history of Nightwish. I'm truly excited to see/hear more and see what my wife thinks as well. Thus far, we've received dozens of suggestions whereby Wacken 2013 is the clear favorite. This will most likely be out next stop, but I'm sure there will be many more.
I'm 50 years old. I've heard many bands with almost all genres of music. I'm a big fan of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Metallica. But Nightwish... Nightwish is my life. Tuomas Holopainen is my private composer. Almost all songs he created they match my musical taste. I just love them. All musicians (former and present) are the masters in they craft. But Floor Jansen (lead singer) ... I love the ground she walks on so I won't be objective here, but she is the best singer in the world right now. Like I said IMHO. I had the opportunity to meet the band back in 1994 (30 years ago - where does time go) when they visited my place of employment at the time and it's something I'll never forget. I've never heard anything like Nightwish before and I am excited to hear more. I can guarantee we will be posting more reactions of this incredible group!

Formed 1996 by the keyboardist Tuomas. Still going strong, even after they replaced 3 singers. Album number 10 is coming out this year.
Not all of their songs are like this, they have no "mold" or "box" to be in, they play every genre with equal skill and creativity.
Hi Greg! Welcome to the phenomenal world of Nightwish! As Gabriel Bardac already said in his comment that Floor (from Flora, Goddess of Flowers and Spring)Jansen was an emergency replacement in Oct 2012. She had to learn the setlist in 48 hrs while flying from The Netherlands to the USA and she nailed it! At the time of the show you just saw she was trying to make the songs a bit her own as each of the previous singers had their own style. 10 months later at the Open Air Festival in Wacken 2013 in Germany, the largest metal festival in the world with a crowd of 82.000+, she went for it with this song ( Ghost Love Score) and it was a huge succes. It is the most viewed video on YT , perhaps you could react to that version as well. And the whole Wacken 2013 concert is the best of the best! You'll not be disappointed! My favorites of that concert are "Song of Myself" and "She's my sin". So, if you feel to reacting to them....please do! Greetings from The Netherlands!

Yes Wacken 2013 is very popular as well as Wembley 2015 and Tampere 2015 (TAM-peh-rreh...Finland) as well. Gabriel Bardac gave you a long list of songs with the correct links so you can't go wrong. And you don't have to follow the list to the letter, just pick one that appeals to you. Enjoy the rabbit hole!
Nightwish has a wide variety of songs with different lengths and styles. No songs are the same. Floor (lead singer) was only with the band a few months at this point and was only filling in for the previous singer with 48hours notice to learn the songs. After the Wacken festival (later on in the year) she became the new front women for the band. They are still going and are releasing a new album this year!

Great reaction and Jim Steinman reference was really suitable too! As on fellow Gen Xer I have to say that this is my favorite band of all time - and II have now listen music already 40 years. Nightwish is always great in live too, I have seen this band three times during three decades. Last time I saw this band last summer in Kitee Finland, where all this started over 25 years ago. Band is very loved both in Europe and especially in South America. But is known around the world and you can talk with Nightwish fans were ever you go.

You won't know this of course, but you have joined the band only a few weeks into their association with the incomparable Floor Jansen at the end of 2012. A fuller, and far more representative performance with Floor (8 months later when she has honed her craft) can be found from their legendary Wacken Open Air concert from August 2013. When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’.
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera).
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’.
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’
Floor joined Nightwish after the iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see.
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on RUclips. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered RUclips in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish.
Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turns 7 years next march) and Lucy (born last october) ,a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.

Hello Generation X reactions, welcome into the wonderful world of storytelling by Nightwish and their incredeble talented 3rd female vocalist Floor Jansen (pronounce Yahn-Sen). Although the band is Finnish, their 3rd singer is not, she is Dutch, lives with her husband Hannes van Dahl, the drummer of the band Sabaton and their two daughters in Sweden.
Floor was born on Februari 21st, 1981 in Goirle the Netherlands. At the age of 16 she started her career (initially) just as the background singer from the Dutch metal band ‘After Forever’ in 1997, but real soon she took over the lead until early 2009 and the band fell apart. Parallel she studied at the Dutch Rock Academy in Tilburg starting in 1999 where she graduated in 2003 and spent two years on classical training with the National Conservatory. She studied Musical Theatre and one year Opera. She plays guitar, piano and flute and has completed 12 years of music studies. She’s a Light Lyric Soprano and her vocalrange runs from E3 to D6. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons.
On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ‘ReVamp’, which was disbanded in September 2016. In August 2010 Jansen was a guest in the TV program De tiende van Tijl. In that program she sang an aria by Puccini. From October 1, 2012 (while she was within ReVamp, but recovering from a burnout) Floor replaced Anette Olzon as the singer of Nightwish halfway their Imaginaerum World Tour. After one year (shortly after the Wacken Open Air festival concert 2013) on October 9th 2013, it was announced that she was to become the group's regular new front singer.

Nightwish, After Forever and ReVamp worked under the same Nuclear Blast record label. Tuomas and Floor know each other since August 20th, 2002 when Nightwish played in a sold-out and swelteringly hot “Hof Ter Lo” in Antwerp with After Forever and Charon as support act.

Most of the symphonic music you hear (on almost every song of Nightwish) is written by Tuomas (keyboards) but is performed by the "London Philharmonic Orchestra". Since there’s not enough space on stage for a full live orchestra (and also couldn’t go with them on world tour for more than a year) it’s a running soundtrack pre-recorded at Angel Studios, London. I like your reaction style. You let the song play a good amount of time before pausing and then gave good concise observations.
It’s hard to pin Nightwish down to one genre. They will always surprise you with their diversity. They even have an English multi instrumentalist (not on stage for this song) that plays the Irish bagpipes!

Floor had only been with the band for 2 months at the time of this concert. The fans had bought tickets to see them with their previous singer and found they'd got an upgrade. You can hear them chanting her name at the end.
The best concert of the tour is wacken 2013 where floor had been on tour with Nightwish for around 10 mths.
You're off by about 20 years ... mid 60s to mid 80s is by far the best period of music. No autotune, the top bands all had really good musicians and most had great ones. There's a reason the music from that period is so popular on reactions and today. Nightwish is one of the few bands that could have easily fit in with the bands of the late 70s
I've noticed that too... our top reaction videos have primarily been from the 70's and 80's thus far - this video; however, has taken off like a rocket in the last few days. We are definitely looking forward to seeing / hearing more from Nightwish!

I think some fans are relieved that you made comparisons to Metallica and Trans-Siberian Orchestra, rather than Evanescence! 😄 Nightwish's band leader Tuomas Holopainen actually started to listen to metal after seeing Metallica live, and in one of Nightwish's songs you can hear a very obvious tribute to Metallica. I must have lived in a bubble for the last couple of decades while raising kids, because while I've heard of Evanescence, I literally could not name one song. I'm looking forward to seeing more Nightwish - even more excited to see my wife's reaction. Thanks so much for watching!

Wembley or Deichbrand. It is the same Quality, but more Floor.
Nightwish was bornm after Tuomas the keyboardist came from his year as a foriegn exchange student in 1991. He was a lover of classical music. His host family took him to see Bodycount, Queensryche, Guns N Roses and the headliner Metallica at Kaufman stadium in 1991. Metallica blew his mind. He reconized the classical elements in the early albums and was hooked. When he got back to Kittee Finland his hometown he was in a half dozen bands. Mostly metal. The heaviest was a black metal band. After graduating from music school in 1995 he formed Nightwish the next year as a acoustic band but quickly realized when Tarja Turinen the lead singer came back from Opera school in Gemany that he voice was way too powerful. So they became a metal band. Tarja the original singer, Empuu the blonde guitarist and Tuomas are all from a very small Village in eastern Finland called Kittee. About 20 miles from the Russian border.

Continuez sur le festival du Wacken Open Air 2013, vous êtes sur de ne pas vous tromper, les quinze chansons du set sont des classiques pour tous les fans du groupe. Cette chanson est la 13 sur les 15 du set complet, mais extraite d'un autre concert mémorable, ensuite toujours dans le même concert, faites le Ever Dream qui commence comme une douce ballade voix piano et sur un signe de Marko ( le bassiste ) continue d'accélérer pour finir comme un train à grande vitesse, puis essayez le Storytime, un excellent rock comme on les aime, avec une bonne surprise avant la fin de la chanson ou alors du plus lourd avec Ghost River pour entendre le mélange des voix de Floor avec Marko ou encore plus lourd avec Romanticide..... You’re spot on comparing Nightwish to a lovechild spawned from Metallica and Transsiberian orchestra.
When Metallica dropped the S&M album I actually thought that it sounded a bit like Nightwish.
Their songs aren’t always as long, but there are two other songs that are really long. But whats best about their music is that all songs are different. They don’t have a standard formula, not even the symponic orchestra is used in all songs.
I hope you do more Nightwish and I recommend the song Storytime from Wacken Open Air 2013.

Will always have a soft spot for this version as this was my first time hearing Floor and also the first time I have heard GLS... but man Wacken 2013 is simply the gold standard.
This Wacken 2013 performance must be amazing as I've seen this suggested numerous times so far - looking forward to seeing / hearing it soon.

"The greatest show on Earth" (Live Wembley or Tampere 2015) is more than 20 minutes long. They normally do not have songs of "mainstream radio length". And although they normally are better live the music video of "Perfume of the timeless" from their newest album (release 20th September 2024) is worth watching. By the way, Tuomas (on keyboards) who composes and writes the lyrics of most Nightwish songs loves movie soundtracks and Disney (you can hear this in several NW songs) and it has been Metallica's music that changed his way from studying marine biology to music.
Originally Floor was sent by Allfather Odhinn to Midgard to gather the souls of fallen warriors to Valhalla, but she
got distracted and joined a series of bands. However, Floor still gathers souls by her grace, beauty and the sheer power
of her vocals.
We give thanks for her at our Blots regularly and hope that Odhinn won't notice that she has never returned to Asgard.

I very much recommend more Nightwish! This was not a good example of them however. The gold standard is their “wacken 2013” concert, it’s in Germany and pronounced Vacken. The singer is Dutch and named Floor Jansen she is capable of rock, opera and growling. The music is written by the keyboard player he is known as the “metal Mozart”.

But this is the result if six of the best musicians join to have a band, join to have fun and they respect each other, are friends. So everyone can shine. You will find out. And Floor is for sure one of the top three vocalist in our universe. Next to Nightwish you really have to check out the 2nd unbelievable band, too > EPICA. It's interesting how you heard the Metallica influence right away. The keyboardist and composer of Nightwish, Tuomas Holopainen, took a vacation to America when he was a child and saw Metallica live there. He said that that experience made him want to write rock music. Disney and Metallica, you can hear them both in his work.
Many songs do include orchestration, but not all. They do many different styles. This was only the 24th live show with Floor Jansen as lead vocalist. She was called to come and replace the previous singer and finish out their tour.
Well of you do it with your wife look at the 2013 Wacken version, in Buenos Aires she was just started singing for Nightwish, in Wacken she reached perfection in her performances, sure you’ll like it

Floor her name is derived from the Roman Goddess of Spring, Flora.
Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy.
Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6).
She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot. Plus, huge vocal nerd 😉.
Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg, where she graduated in 2003. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016.
From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon (Second singer of Nightwish after Tarja) as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour (And she had to learn the setlist in 48h). On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020.

Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use.
