Hello Tom Tuffnuts ! Nightwish fans here, your musical quest summoned us.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing here at Wacken Open Air festival 2013, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of a 82k audience.
Also a recent sad news - these days Marco Hietala, the bass player and male singer of the band, announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
As I saw, you enjoyed the powerful performance of the band, together with the stellar vocals of our Dutch metal queen, Floor Jansen. "She is the metal version of Celine Dion!" - that's a statement. Hope you'll continue on this path.

Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

In these pandemic times, Floor Jansen has decided to make covers for us, which you can find on her YT channel - there are already 6 covers there, the first is "Let It Go" from "Frozen" (22 weeks ago, already over 2.338M views), the second - "Alone" from "Heart" , released 20 weeks ago - 1.155M and counting. Then 18 weeks ago she dropped the third cover, in Dutch: "Is Dit Nou Later" from Stef Bos - already 275K views. so welcome on board with the best band & female singer in the world ! no, seriously you will eventually realize this truth,sadly this amazing band deserves much more notoriety but that is hopefully changing,there are 2 pivotal events for NW since Floor started back in 2012 as the 3rd,current, final & best lead vocalist, #1 was this Wacken 2013 a seminal & legendary concert,#2 was Floor's performances from a Dutch tv show Beste Zangers 2019 after which Floor's & NW's popularity soared with sold out venues like never before.

Floor started out at the age of 16/17 in a band called After Forever and they actually supported NightWish on a number of occasions, so the band were very well aware of her abilities. When their second vocalist (Annette) left midway through the tour that this Wacken show was part of they called Floor and asked her if she could be in the States and learn the set in 48 hours - she did, and there's a documentary called 'Please learn the set in 48hours' which is well worth watching 🤘

Just MAJOR thing when it comes to Nightwish songs.......NEVER NEVER NEVER stop the video before the very end. If anything, this is sooooo important. :)
The reason she seems so happy is that she was! She'd only been singing with the band for a few months (she wasn't even an actual member of the band, yet) and here she was at Wacken, singing in front of 80,000 people. And, she killed it!
At this point she had been with the band like 10 months. I was at their show in Austin TX just a few weeks after she joined the tour and she NAILED this song back then too. I'm pretty sure it was her first performance of GLS with Nightwish :)

Nightwish are a band that has literally changed my life so much. I feel so positive and grateful after many years of brain problems after I had meningitis. I felt sad, burn´t out and very alone but this music was the most amazing medicine for me. Floor also played a large part in it because her beautiful voice allowed me to release so much emotion that had been trapped inside. I will always love her for the tears and goosebumps that continues to present each time I listen to her sing.This was the performance that led me down the Nightwish rabbit hole and it is truly magical.

I'm American, when I discovered them and became a fan in 2003, almost no one here had heard of them. Today most metal heads in the US(at least that I know and have met) have, at the very least, heard of them. So they definitely have massively grown in the US in the 18 years I've been a fan.

@@vhesperian Yes, they definitely headline festivals over here. I just saw an advert for a festival in Hungary I think and they were headlining with Judas Priest as the other band. For me they’re up there with Queen.

She is the third and present singer of Nightwish and considered the best and most versatile female singer of our time. As I am a Flooraholic here is some background information on our Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen. She joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. My favourite song is 'Energize Me'. They made a very beautiful music video out of this. After Forever disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song, such as from full operatic to serious growls in seconds. The songs 'Disdain' and 'Wild Card' are good examples. September 2012 came the call from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the American Tour as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist (there is a documentary made of this world tour ('Please learn the setlist in 48 hours'). The lyrics of the songs of Nightwish are very poetic and the music as a whole is challenging, but Floor pulled it off and she stayed for the whole world tour, culminating in this iconic Wacken 2013 Open Air festival. It was obvious that the combination Nightwish and Floor Jansen was made in Walhalla, so she became a permanent member of the band in 2013 as the relationship with Annette and the band was strained even before she became ill. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp' for a couple of years, but it became clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so Revamp disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived in the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died' is a must see. Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on RUclips. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads slienced and in awe, watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa'. And to see her in full opera mode watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered RUclips in the last year and uploaded many interesting videos on her channel. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses and so much more. Her 'Fan Friday' videos are hilarious. She even made a video reacting to herself performing this at Wacken. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band 'Sabaton'); daughter Freja (just turned 4 years last month); a horse and pony; a dog and 3 cats, she found this.

And can you imagine this song it's like 30% of her actually skills, maybe. This concert was 8 years ago and right now she is the vocal goddess. The great singers are awesome in they own genres. She is absolutely amazing in every single one (well maybe except the French rap, she said she had some problem with it but I think she's just too humble). An 8 year old performance of a 17 year old song still blowing peoples minds, Nightwish been doing this for 25 years now, sooooo underrated and so sad that the majority of the world is only just discovering them, "raw" talent, there's nothing "raw" about it their all masterful and Tuomas Holopainen has got to be the most underrated composer's in history, he is a pure genius at putting together these monumental once heard never forgot scores, as for Floor, words cannot describe her very very few singers can sing anything and everything with perfection. These modern day "popular" music female singers who call themselves "Diva's" Know nothing, Floor has no limits, no boundaries, no specific style, whatever you've heard from her and how ever much , you've seen nothing yet.

Nightwish is a symphonic metal band that started in Finland. This song is a good introduction to symphonic metal. There are many other great bands from Europe in this genre -- which are little known in America. Symphonic metal from Europe is the ultimate music, IMO.
Please, please, please, always listen to their songs to the bitter end. Even thru the credits.

Wacken is a small village in northern Germany with about 5000 inhabitants. And once a year it's home of "Wacken Open Air", one of the biggest Metal Festivals in the world.

The band has been together since 1996 and Floor is their 3rd and current singer she joined the band in 2012 just 9 months before this show, and did her first show with Nightwish with 48 hours notice, traveling from The Netherlands to Settle Wa. to complete the US portion of the Imaginarium Tour. They have had 3 singers, Tarja from 1996 to 2005 very operatic singer, Anette 2007 to 2012 very poppy sounding and Floor the current singer the most versatile she can sing anything from Opera to metal, even death metal growls, and does them all with so much passion and power, and she is really a gift to the musical world in more ways than one. Floor Jansen is a vocal athlete with incredible range, agility, versatility, vocal stamina, and stage presence. She is a soprano with a range of more than three octaves (D3 to F6). It is apparent when listening to her sing that she has spent the better part of her life fine-tuning her instrument with help from several vocal coaches. Floor can sing in multiple languages and genres and is a vocal coach herself. It is incredible how she is able to take any song and make it her own. This woman is a true gift to her craft and an incredible addition to a band that has always been great until 2013 when they officially hired the undisputed Queen of Metal Floor Jansen, making Nightwish the greatest band on the planet.

As for me...I am a 63 year old hard rock/heavy metal enthusiast from way, way back...like Jimmy Hendrix way back...before I was 10 years old...my best friend for 55 years...and I used to listen to rock music in his dad's den!
I still love my rock n roll on the heavier side...and imagine my surprise last year when I listened to "Ghost Love Score" for the first time!!! MIND BLOWN!!! Now...I can't get enough of them!
Just follow Gabriel's guide....I know I have..and now I have CDs, Blue Ray DVD's...heck...I may have to get a turntable so I can listen to vinyl for the first time since the 1980's!!
Not only is the band beyond amazing, but Floor is just phenomenal. Although she is a Nederlander, she lives on a small farm in Sweden with her husband and daughter; is a horsewoman, vocal coach, and originally wanted to become a biologist before she began classical voice training.
She does weekly youtube chats online, and COVERS...my God does she do covers. Check out her youtube page for Phantom of the Opera, on which she collaborated with Henk Poort, the Phantom in the Dutch national production of the musical.
Symphonic metal is something that is just beginning to take off in North America-- it's huge in Europe-- and as a Canadian I am thrilled to see this happening.

Greetings, Tom. Maine,USA saying welcome to the adventure that is Nightwish. The Wacken Open Air Festival of 2013 is an excellent tool to introduce yourself to this band. Each song is better than the last one, no matter in what order you listen to them. When you finish the last one(15 in all), treat yourself to viewing the whole concert, non-stop. 1 hour 38 minutes and 8 seconds of perfection. Watch to the very end and see how much this band loves their audience. I "found" them 5 months ago and it has been the best ride ever!

Just a suggestion - you stopped the video before the actual end of the song. Don't do it - you just never know what you might have missed. BTW - Floor is Dutch and her last name is pronounced "Yansen" - the "J" is pronounced as a "Y" in many of the European countries. Nightwish and Floor will never disappoint. Ever.

Nightwish is a glorious rabbit hole of awesome, with world class song-writing, musicianship and arguably (or unarguably to most who've heard her enough😉) the best female vocalist alive today (maybe ever), the Valkyrie Queen of metal Floor Jansen (pronounced Yansen).
Floor is the third female vocalist that Nightwish have had, she was only with them on tour for 10 months at this point and officially joined the band in 2013, she is still with them today.
The other vocalists are -
Tarja Turunen - (1996-2005) - (Finland) - Very operatic focused vocals.
Anette Olzon - (2007-2012) - (Sweden) - More pop-centric vocals.
Floor Jansen - (2012-Present) - (Netherlands) - Extremely diverse vocals, from deep growls to full on opera.

Floor herself is Dutch and is another glorious goldmine of awesome as she has a lot of non-Nightwish related stuff (including 2 other bands, After Forever & ReVamp) that she has done that is all pretty amazing as well.
The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen.
The name of the genre they generally belong to is Symphonic Metal but their discography is extremely varied.
The "Symphonic" backing tracks of their music is composed in the majority by Tuomas and performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
This was the 13th song in this particular set, Floor is belting notes like that the entire set.
Nighwish are almost always better experienced with live versions of their songs if at all possible.
Some suggestions for more songs for you to continue your journey would be Storytime, Romanticide, Ghost River, Ever Dream, Song of Myself, Dark Chest of Wonders, Nemo, Amaranth and I Wish I had an Angel all from Wacken 2013 (pronounced Vacken).
Saying that, anything from Wacken 2013 is golden really to start, there's a reason why that set is pretty legendary at this point, 82,000 people were in attendance.
Beware of some messed up slowed down versions of the Wacken 2013 songs as they can take the energy right out of the performances, just check the comments on them and I'm sure someone will mention if it's a slowed down version.
Your choice obviously but I'd avoid Poet and the Pendulum and The Greatest Show on Earth for now until you are more familiar with the band and it's history, they will make a lot more sense and be more enjoyable for you that way.
Prepare for the Nighwish army to arrive and enjoy your Nightwish journey, I know I did!😎🤘

Tom, this was just one of their songs, you still have a wonderful long musical journey ahead of you. Questions about the talent of a band and what living live songs mean, you will learn on some levels through and with Nightwish, from all band members. And you have already correctly recognized that Floor Jansen is not just a singer and there is a lot to experience from her...in other times songs would be sung about her.
A lot of nightwish's stuff in the studio sounds just as good live, in my opinion.

Hi new subscriber here and be prepaired for the army because you're at the beginning of a great experience a journey and you liked live stuff.....Floor doesn't need a recording studio with autotune she is the best female vocalist i ever heard and she realy can do it all there is nothing she can't sing, I saw Floor for the first time in a dutch tv show called "Beste zangers" best singers in english and my jaw dropped, she is dutch i'm dutch why have i never heard of her, was i been living under a rock, but a lot dutchies did because she wasn't famous in the Netherlands and now she gets the credits she deserved what a voice and she can do a lot more than what you've just heard but you will find out when you're going thrue Gabriels list of links so i welcome you to your new favorit band and you can expect the unexpected with Nightwish and the best Nightwish song is the last one you've heard from them GLS for now hahaha greetings from the Netherlands

It’s probably the best vocal performance of all time
All the symphonic music you hear (on almost every song of Nightwish) is written by Tuomas (keyboards) but is performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Since there’s not enough space on stage for a full live orchestra (and also couldn’t go with them on world tour for more than a year) it’s a running soundtrack pre-recorded at Angel Studios, London. Greetings my friend from New Jersey and you are getting a crash course in European symphonic metal and other type of metal bands that you should listen to they will absolutely blow you away and yes you are correct the United States has been living under a rock for the longest time they are drowning in hip hop r&B and country right now and that's great for some people but it's not my cup of tea and I just think the music in the United States right now is just so god-awful thank God for the quarantine because that's when I discovered Nightwish like a lot of other Americans and my taste in music has completely changed you will be blown away by a lot of these bands they are phenomenal live the composition is incredible the fans are awesome the lyrics are awesome it's just an experience!!!!! The other thing I would say to you is just buckle up and enjoy the ride because it's an incredible journey and by the way where are you in the United states? Like I said I am from New Jersey and Nightwish will be playing in New York City and as of now I have an extra ticket LOL

Nightwish Army, New Zealand Division reporting. I've listened to plenty of reactions to this song, and still enjoy listening to it. It has been my favourite song by any band for months now.
