I love this whole album. They basically reinvented the rock/pop trio, finding new and creative approaches to playing their respective instruments, not just with what they play but with knowing when not to play. They're very sophisticated musicians' musicians who still manage to be catchy and popular.

For Murder By Numbers, if you don’t understand polyrhythm and/or polymeter, you will by the time you finish it.

This song is very reminiscent of what Sting would go on to do in his solo career. You should give a listen to “Dream of the Blue Turtles” (his first solo cd)

Probably one of my top 5 Police songs. It's so atmospheric and different. Very underrated.

Based on a book called "The Sheltering Sky" (also the title of a King Crimson song from around the same time period.) This is possibly one of my all time fave Police tunes. Short and simple, but oh so sweet with Andy Summers' spacious guitar textures. Musically It links up with other Police songs like "Walking in Your Footsteps" and "Walking on the Moon". All those moody walking songs... 😉 I get Sting's comment about the tempo. If it were slowed down the jazzy swing feel would be much stronger. That's definitely what he would have done with it in later years.

Drinking hot tea in the desert is a tradition from the Arabic tribes. Drinking hot tea make you sweat, but a few minute later, it refresh you.

This song (and maybe also "Walking in Your Footsteps") probably most signals toward the mellower, more 'adult contemporary' direction Sting would go in his solo career shortly after this.

"The Sheltering Sky" was a novel written in the late 40's about a couple going to the desert to try to reawaken their flagging marriage. FWIW.

I loved your musical analysis of Sting’s voice and Andy’s guitar. 👍 The thing I appreciate about Sting is that he continued to improve his singing technique and music composition skill into his solo career. I wouldn’t be surprised if Sting took private lessons like Neil Peart did during his career. The drive for constant improvement is inspiring regardless of what field it’s in.

It's a beautiful spacious track, thanks to Andy Summers above all, because it is he who created this airy, ethereal atmosphere, which perfectly transcribes the large desert spaces.
As for the pacing of the track, it's something that came up a lot in interviews with Sting during his time with The Police, but not just on this track in particular but generally he was critical of Stewart Copeland for his mania for speeding up the tempo of songs on stage (and even in the studio !). I have the impression that Sting had a bit of an obsession with this fact, and personally I find the tempo of "Tea in the Sahara" perfect (not too fast, not too slow).

On the original record release, Tea in the Sahara was the last song on the album. Murder By Numbers was added in later, and I believe was the B-side of the single for Every Breath You Take.

The best version of "Murder by Numbers" is the live version when Sting joined Frank Zappa.

I am 32 and they were my first favorite band and still are among the top and I got to see them in Seattle on the first night (they did a second night in Seattle too) during their reunion tour when I was in 10th grade, I missed my math final test to see it since it was the beginning of June and in my city school normally gets out around the middle of the month and my bday is the 13th so it was normally during the last week of school. It was their first concert on US soil since like 1986 besides getting together for their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony in 2003 about 4 years prior to the reunion tour, although they did start the tour in Canada and went through Vancouver,Calgary and Edmonton and then it was Seattle so it wasn't the first concert since the 80s but the first one in the US since then is still cool to be able to say. I went with my dad and he drove us their in his Mazda pickup which is like between a 4-5 hour drive from my city Spokane which is the main city in the eastern part of Washington and the states second largest overall. So that required spending a night in the Seattle area too, so I missed like 2 days of school but thankfully all I had to makeup really was the math final. One of the best days of my life still, and the tickets were not cheap we sat on the floor not up in the bleacher seats. As far as this song its not one they played, I would have liked to hear it in retrospect, I like it much much more than Walking in Your Footsteps which they did play, which is one of my least favorite by them in fact which I think you sort of feel the same way I do, but at my concert they played Murder by Numbers and Spirits in the Material World which I believe they stopped playing halfway through North America or something like that and started playing Hole in My Life and maybe Demolition Man. I am glad I got to hear Murder by Numbers live instead I love that song, but I would have liked to hear Demolition Man too but I love Material World. Anyways this song I didn't appreciate enough as a teen and I have come to appreciate it much more in my 20s and 30s and love it much more than I did then.

Apparently one of the major arguments between Sting and Copland was the tempo of the songs. Sting always wanted them slower and Stewart always wanted them faster. 😂

For me this song was about broken promises…It was one of my favorite songs on Synchronicity. I saw Sting in concert back in the 1990s. He put in an amazing performance.

the sonic landscape filled with aural texture they create is what set the police apart. this song really showcases sting's transition into his solo career. the structure, rhythm and vocal delivery/style easily segues into sting's debut album DREAM OF THE BLUE TURTLES which i loved more than SYNCHRONICITY honestly. it's a fantastic LP, please check it out, jp!

Counterintuitive as it sounds, there's nothing like a steaming hot pot of tea (a cups never enough), on an unfeasably hot day. I forget the mechanics but it really does act to make you feel cooler. I don't think there's a wrong time, or place to drink tea, actually. It's an amazing panacea 🙂

An outstanding song when it comes to atmosphere and simplicity, so stripped down, I´ve always loved it. The Drum och Base part reminds me a little bit of what P. Gabriel would do three years later on SO.

Andy Summers and Robert Fripp put out two albums together, just them playing all instruments including bass and percussion. I suggest "I Advance Masked", title track from same named album.
Sublime work by Summers on this track. Blessings.

Sure, the Sahara is very hot but only during the day. At night the temperature drops dramatically and can even freeze. Tea then - black and strong is traditional - is very welcome.

To me personally, this amazing song has aways been the perfect ending of a great album, and I admit it never felt right to me after buying the CD version years later that the added 'Murder By Numbers' was now the last song. Which I never liked that much anyway, despite its cool 'first take' legend 😊

"We Can Dance if you want to..." sorry, wrong song. I think Stewart's response to Sting's comment of playing it too fast was that Sting thinks we play everything too fast. I couldn't find the quote, I remember something like that. As I was listening to this, I couldn't help but think Sting's vocal delivery reminds a lot of his first solo "Dream of the Blue Turtles". Sure enough, others on here felt the same.
