The third verse has always gotten me. “I couldn’t believe what I saw/A hundred million bottles washed up on the shore/Seems I’m not alone in being alone/A hundred million castaways looking for a home.” I’ve never forgotten that kind of storytelling.
They either intentionally or unintentionally borrowed the theme from Tony Orlando and dawn's "Tie a Yellow Ribbon round the old oak tree" with the surprise response to the call out (message in a bottle vs tie a yellow ribbon). It's a feel good ending to both songs.
Saw this band in London 1977(maybe early 78)....the crowd were mainly punks who wasn't expecting a reggae based rock band. They were brilliant live.....absolutely amazing 👏
" It seems I am not alone being alone" God I love the Police, I have been listening to them since 1980. They still were on my Spotify top 5 :) I would recommend "Every little thing she does is Magic" and Don't stand so Close to me" Sting is the Bass player btw. Love your reaction!
Andy Summers is one of the greatest guitar players ever period. He is very innovated with effects, great jazz player, great rock player, great classical guitar player too. Not just a rhythm player.
This song is from their second album "Reggatta De Blanc" released 1979 and their first UK number 1 single. They released five studio albums first 1978 and the last one 1983. I really like your reactions Miss Bisscute,
One of my favorite Police songs. That guitar riff is perfect. It's amazing that they decided to call it quits at the very height of their success. A smart move, I think.
The Police 1977 - 1984 Then they had a reunion tour 2007 - 2008 The Police, there will never be another band like The Police!! Just WOW!! Saw them in 1984 and again in 2007. Amazing in concert, so much energy!
The Police were definitely huge in the 80s era. They sort of came out of what's called the British New wave, which was like in the late 70s and 80s, after punk first became a thing there and was influential on the scene, and then there was a lot of different stuff that was kind of a mix of punk, pop, reggae, and early electronic music, I guess. The drummer Stewart Copeland is American, but I think his mother is Scottish though, and he had been living over there and playing in different bands when they hooked up, and then after first getting some success, The Police migrated to the New York City scene, and I believe Sting has lived in New York ever since.
Great post. And I remember that Copeland's older brother - Miles Copeland - was the founder of I.R.S. Records - probably the coolest record label in the 80's (along with island records) - a lot of great artists on both labels.
No...Sting didn't and doesn't live in New York much. He does I think have a holiday home there or place..but he mostly resides in the UK or I think Tuscany
🇨🇦 Music written and recorded between 1959 and 1989 was the best new music ever, since the mid 1800's ! The reason that today's music cannot measure up is simply that music from that period was lively, happy, unique, creative and today's music is a mixture of controversy and anger, of words with no feeling, and Shouting for attention ! There are a few really talented artists today, but they are being drowned out by the attention seekers and the ego trippers ! 🇨🇦
Yes Miss Bisscute, great choice, please More The Police and More Sting songs reactions.😊😊 Suggestions: Every Breath you take, King of pain. From Sting: Brand New Day, Fields of Gold.
Right you are, Sting is a very talented artist. Classic song from the time. Sting's Desert rose is the most recent thing I remember him doing but 79-80s was peak sting.... my moms jams.
I'm so glad to see them on tour in 2006 (Tickets sold out on the Syncronicity tour). They were killer live. Like most talented individuals they found it hard to work together eventually. But when they were on, they were amazing.
Yay, more The Police! Check out the video for their song "Don’t Stand So Close to Me". Such a massive hit. "Nice bass" - yep, Sting typically plays the bass. Oh, and the drummer (Stewart) was always banging random things in their music videos so he wasn't stuck behind a drum kit! 😂
The Police's biggest hit was 'Every breath you take'... everybody has heard that song in passing. Some of my faves: 'Wrapped around your finger' ... "I can't stand losing you" ... 'Every little thing she does is magic" ... 'Spirits in the material world'... 🔥🔥
These guys were real musicians, the guitarist had played with everybody from Eric Clapton, studied in America, and actually jammed Jimi Hendrix. The album this came off, including this song was recorded in 10 days!
Four of the biggest groups of the '80s probably were. Van Halen Genesis Rush and The Police. Aside from Van Halen the other groups were all 3 piece bands/groups ! Keep up the good work and stay safe and be well !
They were a bit earlier-1978-1986 when they split up. Dune was 1984. Them & Madness were the two biggest bands here in the UK of the first half of the 1980's.
This song very much spoke to me when it came out. I was just starting secondary school, hitting puberty, and acutely insecure and lonely - socially and romantically. The Police was my personal soundtrack playing in my head on the way to and from school.
Sting can play just about anything with strings, piano, drums, and so much more. Sting does a fantastic ballad version of this song on the "Bring on the Night" documentary. Would love to see you react to that just because of how much of a different take it is to this version. Love to see anything Police, or Sting solo. The "Bring on the Night" Album is some of Stings greatest stuff. And the Documentary with the same name is quite good too. Oh hey you should react to Laufey. If you aren't a jazz fan now, she'll make you one, she has an incredible voice.
📢🥴I forgot how hard this song hits. 🎸🥁Back when pop music had badass musicians creating it. 👉Next, to up the aggression level: The Police - Synchronicity II 🥵The lyrics are as vicious as the groove.💥
"Look at the drummer....but listen what Andy plays over it. "Five seconnds of shiver" like Sting put it. 1979, their first UK # 1. The next was "Walking On The Moon" from the same album. Not exactly teens, but energetic. Sting was 28, Stewart Copeland 27 and Andy Summers 38. Andy Summers was a seasoned veteran by that time having played professionally since 1965. Around 1978 they were laughed at in the UK being too old and trying to jump on to punk bandwagon and bility to really play was no help either. In the US they took the band as face value and the rest is history they had the last laugh. Please, react to "Bed's Too Big Without You" the mono version. It showcases well the band around 1979 - 1980.
Oh, and also: Because it fits the season so well, maybe check out 'Don't Stand So Close To Me' soon, together with the alternate Christmas version of the video clip! 🎅👍
You really can't go wrong with any song/album from the Police...they're all good in their own ways. While Synchronicity is their most commercially successful album, I am a bigger fan of Ghost in the Machine (which was my initial introduction to the band.) So, when it comes time to do your next reaction, "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic". It's both a fun song and video.
@@paulharrisonadventuregearm5457 Rhythm sections are bass and drums. Guitars can play rhythm parts, but aren't considered to be part of the rhythm section in a traditional 3 piece band without a dedicated lead guitar player (4 piece band).
For solo Sting, I think you would love "Brand New Day"...especially the live TV version that had special guest Stevie Wonder. It is the ultimate (what you would call) feels good song. 😁
you are charming biss, yes the period of the police is from 1978 to 1983 last album!!! they never do another album except a live one for a reunion tour!!!!!
The Police are one of those rare bands that never recorded a bad song. Ever. They did 5 albums, and every song had a reason and purpose. None of it was filler, none of it was product.
Oh it's this song lol, I've heard song coutless times over the years when I'm at my friends and I never knew it's a song by The Police. Loved the video and reaction
Very nice reaction to a classic Police tune. If you want to hear the drummer, Stuart Copeland, really letting it hang out, check out Walking on the Moon...

I can't even remember how I felt the first time I heard this song. 😂 I was probably listening to this song before Bis existed. NB - They aren't actually playing the instruments (or drumming) in the music video. They're acting like in lipsync battles. They put the studio recorded audio over the video.
I was in my first time big relationship back then. I got the vinyl (no cd ....) as a birthday gift. I was so happy ... fond memoies. But ... the guitar riff is one of the more difficult ones to play, I practiced like six months getting this right (and then even I didn't because I relied on 'dodgy' transcripts). Anyway, cheers for reacting to this one. Love to see young people (as opposted to my 36 ... or is it the other way around ... I can't remember 😀) react to this and appreciating it 👍
Sting and Andy summers are British but Stewart Copeland (drums) is American. Early Police music videos are from when MTV was just starting and was in desperate need of new videos... some artists went all out on videos and made really expensive onces.. but usually the Police just looked like they took a cheap 8mm camera and messed around for an hour... like they didnt take em seriously... until THEY started doing big budget videos like the Kurosawa style Synchronicity video.

It's kinda cool how they act so casual and bored in the vid, they are trying but not really trying too hard. Also kinda cool how effective the bottle of Peroxide was for their early image.
Stuart is only hitting the chairs in the video. He plays the song on real drums. Sting has always played bass. The Police members were very high strung characters that sometimes got on each other's nerves like siblings would.
The drummer is Stewart Copeland, one of the greatest drummers of all times! Great band and great song
A drummer's drummer is Copeland...
I'm a metal drummer, but Copeland rules. One of the greats. Like the other dude said, a drummers drummer
