This was 1979. I was a kid but remember it clearly. The Police drew a lot of influence from reggae. Also check out Every Little Thing She Does is Magic. If you haven't already do check out Madness. Another great band from that era. Try Must Be Love and Our House.
The members of the Police were frustrated jazz musicians, who wanted to be famous. In the late 70's and early 80's there was a big reggae influence on music. Many of the post punk bands took on a reggae feel. The Police, embraced this and was their road to fame. Ska was also reggae derived and also very popular at the time.
Great song! More Police songs: Every Breath You Take, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, Roxanne, King Of Pain, Walking On The Moon, De Do Do, Don't Stand So Close To Me, Spirits In The Material World
It’s such a catchy song, I’ve listened to it again since this reaction and have been having it pop into my mind randomly throughout the day, I’m excited to hear more of their music
This is one of the Police's most iconic songs. For a future reaction, I suggest checking out a live concert video from their 2008 reunion tour. The song is another big hit of theirs called 'Wrapped Around Your Finger.' The video camera is focused on the drummer, Stewart Copeland, the entire time, and his wide variety of percussion instruments. He moved between them seamlessly onstage. Here is a link to that video if you ever want to react to it: ruclips.net/video/hWh5ilLBs-k/видео.html
Ooft, 1979, dude! There were more vinyl singles sold that year in the UK than any other, the charts were extremely competitive, and top ten hits were at least as big as most number 1s today, and we were moving from the classic rock and pop of the 70s, which was getting stale, and short-lived punk (The Police started as a punk outfit) and fairly short-lived disco, to new wave, post-punk sounds, New Romantics and the synth-pop of the late 70s and into the early 80s. Good catches on the reggae and the sample.
CAN’T STAND LOSING YOU - DRIVEN TO TEARS - WHEN THE WORLD IS RUNNING DOWN …. - CANARY IN COAL MINE - DE DO DO DO, DE DA DA DA - EVERY LITTLE THING SHE DOES IS MAGIC - INVISIBLE SUN - SYNCHRONICITY II - EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE - KING OF PAIN- WRAPPED AROUND YOUR FINGER - MURDER BY NUMBERS are my favorite The Police songs. They absolutely had Reggae influences along with Punk and New Wave influences.
Yeh the pronunciations, but Sting is from Newcastle, so for me it's like "so what's the Reggae influence?, and what's just the Geordie accent sounding like Caribbean* accent all mixing up into one big accent soup" In other words some of the vowels in the Geordie accent are close to Caribbean accent and some of them are very different, so its hard to tell how much is that and how much is the Caribbean Reggae influence. They are both elements that are there but how much of each? we will never know. To be honest I am not sure Sting would be able to really tell us (*the Geordie accent does not sound like Caribbean accents...BUT some of the vowels are very similar, example, say Beer Can in a Caribbean accent and then say it in a Geordie accent, ....they sound exactly the same) Sorry this is random but has always made me amused at how things can be like this without most people noticing
Baby me must’ve had a good taste in music, excited to hear more from this band, will have a reaction to “Roxanne” posted later in the week, thanks for stopping by the channel!
Copeland on the drums.!!! The true heavy weight talent in this band...
I'm not sure why other than It hits so hard, but the "walked out this morning"part gives me full body chills every time!

Not reggae influence in a Police song surely?!? 😅 Glad you've finally (re) discovered the joys of The Police.
