The song is basically pointing out that, when you're going through pain and heartbreak, it feels like you're the only one, but other's are going through these pains also. You're not alone.
Ain’t that the truth.
💙💙💙💙💙
Atomic clocks are jealous of Stewart Copeland's precision.
Walking On the Moon always gets me. Love Stewart!
hahaha ... it's true
Click tracks follow Stewart
Fun fact, they're called "The Police" because his dad was in the CIA which is why he lived in England.
That was good...lol. 👍🏼
Reggae verse, rock chorus, was the pattern of the Police's songs for the first couple of albums. It was a signature style - you always knew their songs within a few bars.
But their jazzy interludes and interplay live were the best :)
your comment has driven me to tears
@@SirWrecksy Sorry if I reduced your comfortable existence to a shallow, meaningless party. 😉
@@Serai3 haha good one! but...
what does it have to do with me?
@@SirWrecksy You were quoting The Police, right?
Stuart Copeland's drumming is incredible. He is REALLY good!
Every Little Thing She Does is Magic would be a great choice!
That English reggae-ish style is called "Ska." Check out The Specials for more of that.
The Specials are indeed special. Ghost Town is a vibe
Also The Beat (or The English Beat as they were called in the States). A fantastic group in their own right and formed the basis of 2 more great groups,General Public and The Fine Young Cannibals, when they broke up. "Save It For Later" is one of my all-time favorite songs and has been for 40-ish years.
Stewart Copeland is a lot of drummers favorite drummer. Unbelievable timing.
not just drummers, I'm a bassist primarily. he's my favourite drummer. but yeah, I never hear drummers saying he's overrated lol.
The Police have one of my favorite drummers. Stewart Copeland is a master on the drums.
Asia & BJ, their "Spirits In The Material World", "Everything She Does Is Magic" and "Synchronicity II" are next for you!!
Saw them 4/16/82,great show. Reggae band Black Uhuru opened for them.
Excellent suggestions! "Walking on the Moon" and "Driven to Tears" as well...
Dude,Black Uhuru with Sly and Robbie as the rhythm section? Because if yeah,I'm extremely jealous. That had to be a sick, sick show.
@@wreckingKREW1 yes, Derek "Duckie" Simpson, Michael Rose, Sandra "Puma" Jones, Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare.
All excellent suggestions
@@vincentschmitt7597 thank you!
The drummer, Stewart Copeland, is absolutely killing it on this song. He does one of my favorite drum fills ever near the end of the song after Sting sings "Sending out an SOS" the fourth time, with the last two reggae-like anticipated hits on the cymbal and snare.
Asia, I forgot to mention that I saw you play air drums on those last two beats of the drum fill I mentioned....and it was awesome! 😁
My favorite drummer.
He's always killing it. LOVE his drumming skills! Genius and unique.
I'm English so The Police are like a staple for every household in the 80s, awesome band, awesome music! So Lonely is another great song... oh and I love the way you say Police 🤣 "Po-lice" love it! 🇬🇧🇺🇸
Their best music was in the 70s 😉
@@normandavidtidiman9918 Yes I know they were good in the 70s it's just I remember their 80s period more, I was old enough to appreciate them by then 😘
About this song, Sting said "I like the idea that while it's about loneliness and alienation it's also about finding solace and other people going through the same thing. The guy's on a desert island and throws a bottle out to sea saying he's alone and all these millions of bottles come back saying, So what So am I!"
One of the greatest drummers, Stewart Copeland, always a joy to hear.
He hits when you don't expect, but it makes sense every time.
The Police - Synchronicity II (2) must listen.
The Police broke many barriers. They blended Rock, Reggae and some Punk Rock into most songs and they are bad azz!
Sure, but for me, they were punk jazz! Especially live around 1980.
it's called "Ska music" same style as No Doubt. LOVE IT!
Sometimes such bottles are found. There were two different "message in a bottle" stories in the news earlier this year. In January a woman in Norway found one dropped by a school girl in Scotland back in 1996. In February an elementary school student in Norway found a miniboat launched by middle schoolers in New Hampshire in 2020. "Hundred billion bottles washed up on the shore..."
I met an astronaut who was in the space station. He found a bottle whilst in training, on the Florida sea shore near Canaveral. The message contained the person's email address in it. He emailed them whilst he was up in the Space Station. How crazy is that?
Andy Summers with his movable suspended chords; Sting with his lyrics and Reggae influences (which they all had); the secret weapon behind the drum kit: Stewart Copeland. They opened their final show (ever?) at MSG with this song backed by the NYPD drum corps: amazing!
Sting has a solo song Fragile. He sings it live with Stevie Wonder at his 60th birthday party. It is so beautiful, maybe y’all can react to this video. I think you’ll love it ❤️
The image of the man shipwrecked sending out a message in a bottle is a metaphor for the feelings of alienation and loneliness so many people feel now. (It was the 80's when he wrote it, but the feelings have only gotten stronger since then.) The idea is that he's desperate for contact, to reach out but he doesn't know how. Then when he does, he's stunned to realize how many other people are living on their own desert islands, believing they're alone.
It came out in 1979 😀
Beautifully said Serai3 💕💕💕
@@truemansparks * eyeroll * There's always gotta be one nitpicky a hole.
Written at the latest 1979 and was released in September of that year.
why is correcting someone politely being an arsehole?
Stewart Copeland’s drumming is a major factor
Memories of my first Police concert in 1980, 30 000 people singing this, chills to this day remembering.
This still sounds as fresh today as when it came out. For a more laid back take on The Police, try their track "Wrapped around your finger" - if you haven't reacted to it already.
But recorded almost half a century ago!
Certain things give the era away, but you can't deny the great writing and playing. Stuff from the 80's sounds closer to now than the 50's sounded to the 80's. Technology.
Asia, your laugh, and smile are priceless! Please don't EVER stop using them! Thank you both for another great reaction! My band covered this song hundreds of times over the years.
Agree 100%! It is impossible not to smile yourself seeing a personality like that. Life goals...for real.
In a world in desperate need of smiles...it is nice to see one so genuine. Keep the amazing reactions coming guys!
😊
Police started out in the punk scene of the 70s.
They evolved themselves into a band that had a punk, reggae, rock and pop sound. Sometimes individual songs, but mainly all infused together. Check out Every Little Thing She Does next.
Stewart Copeland - one of the greatest drummers of all time!
This is a song I used to play all the time when I was 6 or seven in mid 80s. That bass through it makes this song Epic as I feel the bass was was used more in the past then it is used nowadays.
Try: "Walking on the moon" or "Every Little thing she does is magic". The Police was one of my favorite bands in the 80's.
There was a strong reggae and ska influence on British music back in the '80s. If you like The Police then you'll love The English Beat (known just as The Beat in the UK) who only made 3 albums but left an incredible collection of songs: I Confess, Save it for Later, Tears of a Clown (Smokey Robinson cover), Hands Off She's Mine, Mirror in the Bathroom, Too Nice to Talk to, Can't Get Used to Living You.
My favourite Police song. A perfect pop record, with an incredibly tight three-piece band, all superb musicians, none of them showing off - everything they do is in service of the song and the groove - or should I say grooves. Stewart Copeland is the MVP here, as others have said. He is *brilliant* and so subtle, varying beats and tempos and rhythms in a way that very few drummers can.
I love Asia's laugh with that pretty face, it's so straight from her soul and belly. Asia is a gem!
The Police have many great songs, love them, thank you for sharing!
Message in a bottle reminds me of my late father he always put a message in a bottle every time he went to the coast here in Norfolk uk ,he had reply’s from Holland ,France Norway to name a few ,he kept in touch with them for many years and his ashes were put to see by or local lifeboat with a bottle .
sting is the most lyrically gifted songwriter of my and, frankly, any generation. his ability to create sonic spaces and rhythms with words is awe-inspiring.
the police were a once in a lifetime trio of brilliant musicians and creaters. your next police songs are "don't stand so close to me" and "every little thing she does is magic" (my personal most fav). they have SOOO many good songs, not to mention sting's FANTASTIC solo stuff, which is for another time and another set of reacrions lol.
He’s my second favourite.
Under James Hetfield.

This is a good song. I really enjoy The Police.
I forgot how much I love this song and its message!
Part of the UK new wave scene back in the days. Lot of groups were blending punk rock and reggae and ska. Electronics.. The Police were one of them. Did it well. Punk groups and reggae groups from Jamaica, West Indies used to play at smaller venues together (US, UK, Caribbeans) underground clubs. Music that had common themes too. Political, uplifting, upbeat, etc. Appreciated each others music 😆 thats how it all started.. Anyways ska punk is popular too. See No Doubt (Gwen Stefani), Less than Jake, Mighty Bosstones, etc.
Bruno Mars was influenced by the Police too. Song "Locked Out in Heaven" a few yrs back. Sang with Sting on stage a few times too. 🎸
Stewart, Andy and Gordon, quite a group. Very Reggae, Very Police.
That's what was called 'New Wave'. It's a fusion between rock, reggae and punk. Sensational at that time.
Your favorite drummer’s favorite drummer - the master of the high hat, Stewart Copeland!!
Classic tune!!! Police had their own unique sound....Great memories
Love the pounding drum beat in this song. Another great Police song with a real "reggae" feel is "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic".
From here in Brazil connected to your videos!!! Big hugs!!!
I love how BJ got the ‘message’ of the message in a bottle…we’re all sending out an SOS to the world. Loneliness can be a universal feeling…
Hey...you can't go wrong with The Police. Well since Sting retired, he can change his name to Stung...credit goes to Colin Mochrie from the show Whose Line Is It Anyway? Their other songs: "Don't Stand So Close To Me" "Roxanne" "Walking On The Moon" "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" "Every Breathe You Take" "I'll Be Wrapped Around Your Finger" "Synchronicity I & "II" "King Of Pain" "Invisible Sun" "Spirits In The Material World" "Can't Stand Losing You" "So Lonely" Sting's songs: "Russians" "Fields Of Gold" "Desert Rose" "Fortress Around Your Heart" "Fragile" "Shape Of My Heart" "Englishman In New York" "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" "Love Is The Seventh Wave." Fun fact: Sting loves to do Yoga!
Police Drummer Stuart Copeland is one of the best drummers of all time! One of Danny Carey’s favorite drummers amongst many others.. a legend on those pig skins and maybe the best hi hat player of all time
Stewart Copeland top 10 drummer of all time love the police
The Police basically played what was known in the uk as " White Reggae " as denoted by one of their early albums " Regatta de Blanc " or in english " White Reggae " . This was not a slur on true reggae , just that it was a different type of reggae. Sting was a great admirer of Bob Marley & all reggae in general.
Such a simple and profound message using a castaway as a metaphor. Great song. Came off the album "Regatta De Blanc" or white reggae. Early Police was a great mix of reggae and punk. We're all sending an SOS by the way.
As usual, we hear Stewart Copeland knocking it right out of the park with a drumming exhibition! Sorry BJ but The Police remind me of none other than The Police. They are totally unique!
That song rocks SO HARD!!
It's a great message, but musically it's complex and has a rocking beat that never stops.
Definitely one of their best songs.
The band that brought us "New Wave." Along with The Cure, The Tubes, Flock of Seagulls, Devo, The Fixx, etc, etc. But, it was The Police that blew it up. Saw em open for The Knack right when "My Sharona" was getting ready to become an FM staple. Then, a few months later, "Roxanne" blew up. $6 and a fake ID got you in the door lol...at a Discotheque complete with the big, mirrored ball, and the electric bull riding machine lol. Also, The Police don't get enough credit as great musicians...Top-shelf.
This song has taken on a more impactful meaning since social media and everyone sending out their messages through modern "bottles".
3 dudes. Bass. Drums. Guitar. So tight. So glad y'all checking it out! Thanks😍
I wish I still had the Police pin I wore on my jacket back in the day.
YES! Asia was feeling this one! 😊 Great group, great song. Love the Reggae influence in their music; next Police song: “Voices Inside My Head” 🔥
The Police became globally popular in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They were part of the British new wave scene & they played a style of rock influenced by punk, reggae & jazz. They have had a lot of hits such as "Roxanne", "Can't Stand Losing You", "Walking On The Moon", "Don't Stand So Close to Me", "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" & "Every Breath You Take" etc. Sting went on to have a big solo career.
They basically came out of the London Ska scene, based in a mix of Punk and Reggae
The Police are so different and so brillient .Every one of there songs are good Try reacting to Dont stand so close to me or Every little thing she does . Just A GREAT GREAT BAND ..Period
One of their albums was titled Regatta De Blanc which translates to White Reggae.
This way of bringing new wave, rock, pop and reggae together was completely new at the time. And I don't think anyone really followed in their footsteps after that. The little story they tell with "Message in the Bottle" is also super nice and sad.
The Police did a more Punk/Ska New Wave back then, but also heavily influenced by Reggae. Ska was developed in Jamaica and that whole vibe was wrapped up in their sound as well.
What a SONG! One of the very best from one of the very best bands ever. STING = Super Talent! His career has been in the stars forever it seems. Love his voice. Thanks for posting this.
Their other songs like "King of Pain" , "Synchronicity II (2)", "Walking on the Moon" are worth checking out. Also the songs "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" & "Fortress Around Your Heart" from lead singer Sting's first solo album "The Dream of the Blue Turtles" from 1985 is pretty good too.
The Police are among the few bands that can pull off repeating lyrics at the end of songs that you want to go on.
If they ever go on another reunion tour, you should see them 🎧 💓 🎶
More songs by The Police you should hear are "Walking On the Moon ", "Spirits In the Material World ", "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da", "Synchronicity I", "Synchronicity II", "Don't Stand So Close To Me", "Murder By Numbers" and "I Can't Stand Losing You".
That upbeat reggae beat/vibe is called ska.
Again love it when our American friends discover English music
U keep saying for a small Island the Uk 🇬🇧 produced awesome music forefront
The drummer Stewart Copeland is a monster.
Awesome band i really like Stewart copelands drumming great drummer😉
Love you guys, always cheer me up.stay real.
Great Band Reggae and Rock and Roll mixed. Eric Clapton did it. Steven Stills as well.
stewart copeland is such a badd ass drummer and what a great song. if you want to hear the utmost in cool then check out the reggae drenched slick grooves of Bring on the Night off the same album.
Knowing how you like the "Purple One" have you heard this one: Prince - The Most Beautiful Girl In the World.
One of my ALL TIME favs....FUN FACT, Sting has a winery in Italy named " Message in a Bottle":...how cool is that?
A really big sound for a band with just three people. Amazing!
Love this song, but personally if you really want to hear the way it was really meant to be played and Sung check out Sting singing it live from the Secret Policeman's Other Ball. Though love this version as well Rick'n Reggae beat...
check out Darkness, written by Stewart Copeland, the Police's drummer, and founder, on the LP Ghost in the machine.
Sting was nicknamed by other older jazz bassist he played with when he was younger
I was in England in 1975, first time I heard this song. At least the bottles were not plastic back then. Yes Bj Reggie music was big in Britain at that time.Loved those days!!
Spirits in a Material World and Wrapped Around Your Finger are fantastic songs too especially lyrically.
Also try out Sting's solo work like Russians (which is unfortunately still relevant today) and Englishman in New York. Both wonderful songs!
Love it guys ❤️
Stings bass is fantastic here too 😎
Love the message of this sone. For something more esoteric, try Synchronicity II. Its brilliant, based on the Jungian concept of Synchronicity.
Yes! Wrapped Around Your Finger and Spirits In The Material World are worth a listen as well. Sting is an incredible singer-songwriter for the ages. His lyrics are thought-provoking. He wrote a song called Russians. I think it is relevant today, unfortunately.
You should check out Sting's so!o work. He's a master. Fortress Around Your Heart, If I Ever Lose My Faith In You, Fiels of Gold.
regaee vibe...for sure...."voices inside my head" must dance
Stuart copelands drumming is awesome, one of the best drummers imho
YES! Back in the day, throwing bottles with notes into bodies of water was a big thing, for sure. No wonder that it was the same era when we tied notes to (latex) balloons and released them by the dozens. And this was so long ago, that "polluting" the water with our bottles never even occurred to us, and these were GLASS bottles. We gleefully heaved them into the waters.
You guys didn't mention how Upbeat it is? Way more than their other hits. Although "Synchronicity II" rocks pretty hard. Go for that if you want their hard rock side👍 it references Loch Ness 🦕
We used to o on surfing trips, this was part of the soundtrack in the car.
Asia I love that you sent those notes in a bottle, what fun. The Police was such a fun and uplifting group, sadly they were only together for a few albums. Of course Sting is still making great music. 👍👍👍
You guys are listening to so many great songs! I ride a stationary bike every morning to music reactors and you two are the best! 😁❤️
Stuart Copeland puts such a driving beat into this track but Andy Summer's chord progression in this song is for me what makes it, they are minor chords with an add 9th and it's a stroke of genius.
Great reaction! I saw The Police in Hawaii in Blaisdell Arena in 1980 or '81 I believe. Went with a bunch of Navy shipmates. Sting played stand up bass most of the time. Had a great time. During the break a buddy of mine and I ran into Tom Selleck who had recently arrived in the islands to shoot season one of "Magnum, P.I." He was a really nice guy. You could drink a beer with him and never think he was a star. His next door neighbor was Carol Burnett and she was always the same way with fans. Sorry, I digress. Don't take much for an old swabbie to lapse into "sea stories". The Police, like a number of amazing groups I listened to, were a trio. And still they could fill an arena with gorgeous music that would just surround you.
"Love can mend your life - but love can break your heart" ❤️
This comes from their album "Reggatta de Blanc," which is French for white reggae
Nice. The greatest rock trio of all time. And yes, I'm a big Rush fan. Nonetheless...
I grew up on a farm on the MN side of the Red River (only US river that flows north), and sent out a few bottles as a youth, as well as small wooden 'boats' that I made from scraps when my parents built a house, writing my name and phone number on there. I never received any responses, but I did enjoy exploring along the river banks, and one time found a bottle sent by some man that lived in the next town upstream (about 10 miles away) that had been sent several years prior.
Reggae influenced alot of British Bands. Check out SKA Bands like The English Beat, The Specials, and Madness. 1980's Commonwealth of Britain. Xo ❤ Canada 🇨🇦
The real genius in the structure of the composition - reminiscent of "Take Five" by Dave Brubeck - is that Andy Summers is actually keeping the time of the song while Stuart Copeland plays all around the guitar with some incredibly intricate percussion. The only difference is the Take Five used a piano instead of a guitar - incredibly difficult to pull off!!! Brilliant!!!
Yup, it's metaphor for the fact that everyone can feel lonely sometimes. It kinda has a similar message to R.E.M.s 'Everybody hurts'. Don't give up hope, you're not really alone, we just have to find some ways to connect.
