    The lead singer's name is Sting and he is using a bit of a Jamaican accent that he used to do in his early songs; not so much when he went solo. Two of the band members are English; the drummer is American. Check out the Police: "Wrapped Around Your Finger" and Sting's: "Fields of Gold".

    JAMACIAN MUSIC was popoular in the 70s and early 80s and many rock artists incorporated it in their songs thanks to BOB MARLEY and The Wailers as being a big part of that influence ..

    I’m from the UK with Jamaican heritage and The Police were one of my favourite groups growing up as a teenager.
    I loved their reggae influenced songs.
    Apparently, the drummer introduced the other guys to Bob Marley and Peter Tosh when they first got together as a group.

  • @KentLindley15
    @KentLindley15 3 года назад

    Legend has it that the record label made them all dye their hair blonde right before they blew up, and that's why so many blonde hair boy bands came following along. They hated it though, and the more successful they got the more they hated each other and the label. Notice no talk ever of a reunion when everyone is doing it. They did do a few shows together again in 2008/2009 but nothing since then. They broke up in 1988 or 1989. Sting was the real talent of the group and everyone knew it. Songs for the group, there's a bunch of good one's, but 'Every Breathe you Take' or 'Roxanne' or "King of Pain' or 'Spirits in the Material World' (you get the idea) could be their biggest/best. For Sting Solo, 'Fortress Around Your Heart' and a bunch more... Thumbs up, look forward to seeing.

  • @NOLAgenX

    Excellent first choice for a Police song!
    The Police main influences were punk and reggae, so you will hear elements of these in many of their songs. They also kind of rode the New Wave movement that ended the 70’s and began the 80’s. Bottom line, they are a mutt, but a good one!
    I recommend Synchronicity Ii, King of Pain, Roxanne, and Don’t Stand So Close To Me.
    Don’t let Stewart Copeland’s pretend drumming fool you. To this day he is considered one of the top 20 drummers in most ratings. 😊

    Your comment about Stuart Copeland -- the drummer -- playing the drums on a chair... yeah, he's considered one of the best drummers alive. I once watched him "play the drums" on this big crystalline boulder in Africa using nothing but his hands. The local tribesmen had been using this rock to make music for thousands of years, and it had been hit so often that "drum spots" had eroded away into it. He played around with it for a while, getting a feel for what spots made what tones when you slapped them with your hand.
    And then he went to town on it. It was glorious.

There is a lot of great stuff from them, I am going to recommend "Bring on the Night", "Driven to Tears/When the World is Running Down", and anything off the Outlandos D'Amour album. If you want to hear their groovy/jazzy/trippy stuff try "Masako Tango" or "Voices in my Head".

    The sub genre is called...the Police.
    But they do have a lot influences that you might enjoy, such as important reggae artists Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh. The bands, "Madness" and "The Clash" could be considered influences, but their sounds are different.
    Another band called "The Specials" might have been considered a contemporary. Check out their song called "Gangsters."

    The Police were great Stewart Copeland's Hi-Hat work was on another level. This song is from their second album which was titled "Reggatta de Blanc" which translates to "White Reggae" so you're comment about Sting sounding Jamaican is well founded and entirely intentional.
    For me some stand out tracks are "Can't Stand Losing You" and "Don't Stand So Close To Me", I'm pretty sure Sting was previously an English teacher so Don't Stand is even more intriguing as a song.

    Sub genres in rock tend to have their moments in time to shine or be a thing and then they simply become a part of music history. Back in the late 70s, early 80s, particulary in England, there was something called ska. Ska had something of a reggae sound to it although it was it's own beast. Early Police are mix of those influences. Little bit or reggae, tiny bit of ska, more rock. That's what you are hearing. Good Ear! Not all Police stuff is like that and when Sting went solo his music didn't sound like that at all really. His voice will always give me those vibes tho. Early Police is the bomb. Along with bands like U2 and Duran Duran, the Police were one of the mega bands of our generation. Tremendously popular, they all ruled the airwaves for a time.

    • @LOAFEMB
      @LOAFEMB 3 года назад +1

      Ska started in Jamaica in the 60’s with Desmond Dekker, Toots & the Maytals, Alton Ellis, Prince Buster and Jimmy Cliff etc... Carried over to England. From there in the 70’s & 80’s you had the Specials, The Clash, Police, Madness etc the whole Twotone era

    • @dipsydoodle7988
      @dipsydoodle7988 3 года назад +1

      @@LOAFEMB good to know. I wasn't sure of the origins of ska since it is before my time, but I clearly remember the buzz in America about it in the early 80s. It was such a different sound from what I grew up with, basically classic rock. Same reason I got heavily into new wave. It was a breath of fresh air.

    The Beatles were the first to redefine rock and roll. Twenty years later the Police redefined It again using more World Beat, Reggae and jazz. Stewart Copeland was a brilliant percussionist Sting had the perfect high voice and And Summers could deliver that thrashing lead riff

    Rock mixed with reggae... Yes, British bands are so good and creative ... Sting, a crazy voice playing bass guitar in the same time, so hard... Respect ! A French fan of British bands, for a very long time... Love from France 🇫🇷😘

    Message in a Bottle is from the Album "Regatta de Blanc"~WHITE REGGAE.
    Try "Walking on the Moon" for a verrry HEAVY Bassline that feels subsonic on a vinyl with 15" Drivers.

    First single I ever bought back in the day. Too many great songs to list and Sting from my home town. All songs below in comments and dozens more. Too good. Stings solo music also amazing.

    The Album name is "Raggatta de Blanc" which loosely translates to "Reggae of White".

    The Police are an amazing power trio that burst onto the scene late 1970s/early 80s as part of a "New Wave" of rock, theirs clearly with a Jamaican, jazz, bluesy influence. They are HUGE!! Lead singer/bassist Sting would go on to a long a super successful solo career from the 1990s and still going stewart.
    The band is 2/3 British and the 1/3 American is drummer Stuart Copeland, a legend! Enjoy. They lots more worth reacting - my favorite would be "Walking on the Moon"

    Stewart Copeland is considered on of the all time best drummers in rock... certainly one of the most influential... Andy Summers was incredible on guitar and of course Sting was one of the best songwriters there ever ever was.

    That's 80s British Ska. There's a lot where that came from. The Police alone have dozens of great songs.
