- Rachel Zegler, who's playing Maria in Steven Spielberg's new West Side Story film (out December 2021), played the role a few years ago in Bergen Performing Arts Center's Performing Arts School production while she was in high school. She was 16 during this performance, in the summer between her sophomore and junior years.

She sings it in a way very different than in the film. I assume because it was in a play, so it needed to be more powerful, but her voice is absolutely stunning and her performance in this incredible, in the actual film I think she is one of the most talented people around- beautiful and talented and absolute star!!!
She sings with Spanish accent in the movie, that's why it sounds different from the play.
Yes theatre actors must project so the entire audience can feel the performance unlike in the cinema.
the song is in different key, she’s using a lot more vibrato and enunciating her words a lot more!
So refreshing to see these roles played by younger folks who actually have talent! Too often Maria is lacking freshness and Tony is eligible for Medicare. I'm looking forward to the film, yes, but this is great stand-alone.

Her last “tooooniiiiIiiGHT!” Inflection is poignant and beautiful. The girl is a star and may very well win an Oscar.

Good GOD!! I just started looking into this. My brother was an usher back then, and I could get into the movie theater for FREE. I saw WSS EIGHT times. I can't believe she is SIXTEEN doing this!! Yes half Latin. Because God forbid Hollywood would give Latinos our due. Spielberg told Vanity Fair that the cast is at least 50 % of Latinos playing the Sharks but why not 100%? The actress playing Anita is African_American who is supposedly a little bit Puerto RIcan. I want to see her DNA because if Hollywood believes that Lupita whatsherface is Mexican, then they are just pumping up numbers to minimize their bigotry.

And produce, direct, write, act, etc ... And Spielberg has issues- like we all do- me especially-lol. But, at least, he did 50% & brought back Rita Moreno. That is a step. A baby step. When Hollywood has been called on their lack of awards/jobs for Latinos, they include her in the mix which is disgraceful as it is dishonest and only appeases their guilt These people claim to be so culturally competent and treat the Latino community like we are invisible. The numbers in every area of show business except music are just appalling.
