The thing I admire most is the "kids" playing their icons, and giving it a totally fresh interpretation. Remember ow many people said, you can't re-film WSS.
Rachel has the most beautiful voice. Mike Faist is so talented and much better looking in real life than he is in this film. And I see a grownup David Alvarez and I feel so old. Rita Moreno the embodiment of generosity, grace, experience, dang girl. She's sitting there, about 90 years old listening to and admiring/congratulating a woman literally 70 years younger in Maria/Rachel. And the others actors too. They're all earnestly describing the decades-ago conditions/scenarios they're back-storied-with, with Rita an actual person experiencing the reality.

When they make the movie version of the Broadway musical "Memphis" they should cast Arianna Dubose and Mike Faist as the leads with Spielberg directing.

It's really refreshing watching West Side Story because I didn't know any of these actors, so my focus was all on dance and costume and songs, and then I look them up and amazed to learn that most of them were on big screen for the very first time!
This is definitely the best version! The way they've added bits to the story to make more sense of it like Tony going to jail, and having gone out with Graziella who's now Riff's girl -and add a modern touch- there were even references to what's going on today (like Tony telling Maria that he was 'in freefall off the tallest building -think 9/11- until he met her, and the police ordering a lockdown-nuff said!) and Anybodys being transgender instead of a tomboy, and a reason for the feud (their neighbourhood being knocked down to build homes for the rich). I really loved this version of 'America' where it turned into a street carnival and showed how life could be without racism. Also the fact that Rachel sang her own songs instead of another singer, as in the original, was better, And bringing Rita Moreno back as Doc's Puerto Rican widow really worked, especially having her sing 'Somewhere'- and the fact that she too loved an American, and would have hoped to see Maria and Tony marrying and the gangs becoming mates.
Writing the script took Tony Kushner 5 years. The script was finished even before the pandemic, so this line is such a sad coincidence. Loved this new adaptation and I hope it will win a lot of awards.

@@audreymirandarusselman I posted another thought that summarizes my feelings about WSS. I thought the new one was fine, even great for the most part. Except for America. They cut so much choreography from that number, and Ariana DeBose is such a mindblowing dancer, it just felt like a missed opportunity to me.

This was my first time watching West Side Story FULLY and not just scenes of the musical numbers. I knew the story was inspired by Romeo and Juliette and addressed racial problems (even though those who made it were racist/prejudice in their methods), but I had never sat down and watched the film or seen the musical. I must say while it did clearly show the racial problems but the main plot at the forefront was Maria and Tony’s love story. I hate their love story and don’t understand how people look at them as this romantic couple, same thing with R&J. At first it was cute but it moved so fast and then towards the end I hated Maria, Tony, the candy shop lady, Riff (as a character), the Jets, and just everyone. How can you love someone that killed your brother and even sleep with them just minutes after the crime, and then want to runaway with them?! Like I wanted to slap Maria five times!! That being said the Anita character stole the show for me because she was the only thing keeping me from not turning off the TV (and Riff). Ariana did such a wonderful job with this role because for people like me who did not grow up watching the musical or studying it we very easily could have hated the storyline of the musical. Anita, Riff, the choreography, and music really carried this music for the general public.
I feel like Anita would consider it justice. Bernardo killed Riff, Tony killed Bernardo, Chino killed Tony…and Chino goes to jail. The question is what Anita and Maria will do now.
I liked Tony and Maria in this movie, and Anita, probably will get a the Oscar. I love this new one, but overall, still the original is better to me, and I miss Jerome Robinson's choreograph .
That is the best thing, (and possibly the only thing) I live about the new movie. It is real people playing the real parts they were supposed to play. Not a bunch of white people in dark makeup, and the amount of Spanglish in the movie is fab. The direction was weird lol.
I feel he’s been no where for this movie’s press aside from this interview. None of the cast tags him or posts about him, he hasn’t been in many other interviews, etc. In fact, even in this interview there seems to be tension between him and others.

I remember watching West Side Story (1961 film). My 7th grade class did the Play. I was chosen to do Maria out of 22 girls. It was awesome. Standing Ovation was the best part😉
I loved the scene in the police station.
All the cast is Amazing
Rachel is so well spoken
being well spoken isn't automatically reserved for white folks only ya know lol. You wouldn't be saying that to mike or any of their white counterparts. Stop with the inherent racism and bias please.
@@lovepower4899 i'm latina myself lol! I'm just saying this because I'm her age and she seems so much more mature and well spoken than me and my friends
@@lovepower4899 what on earth???? Get a grip. YOU are being racist. Seriously. The comment was not "she's so well spoken for a latino". Lord, can't we all stop being so OFFENDED???? You're LOOKING for a reason to be angry.
@@itsjubslm shes not latina, latino is not a race but a culture, she didnt grew up here, shes so ignorant about it !!
I love riff
Beautiful cast or talented actors!
They were all amazing - this is a brilliant production and Ansel did nothing wrong -on any level-beautiful voice - well done
Unfortunately, we don’t know for sure that he’s innocent
In the movie, I think Ansel did a good job. However, there are allegations against him that are unsavory and definitely shouldn’t be taken lightly. We don’t know for sure if all of them are true, but it still does not mean we shouldn’t hold him accountable. The allegations came out after the movie was already filmed.
I can't wait to see this. I never seen the original. Although I don't know any of them besides Ansel the cast looks amazing. Ansel fine as hell. I didn't know he sings. And the other guy in white shirt is cute
you should always see originals 1st. so you know were the movie came from. to watch the brilliant actors of a 5 star movie before you were born.
@@kcorpora1 I know of the movie west side story I just never seen it. And yes i know this is a remake of the original
@@ibstayfly cool
@@ibstayfly it’s technically not a remake it’s a new adaptation of the original Broadway musical 😊😊
the guy in the white shirt is mike faist!! he was also in newsies and dear evan hansen, i love him so much
Who rewarched the 1961 version again after watched this 2021 version? 🙋♀️😊
This cast is amazing!!! Loved the movie so much
Me and Rita Moreno are gonna go sit in the Corner as the two members of the ansel as Tony fan club.
There's 3. I'm also in your corner.
i'm in your corner too!
Me too🤣
Huh?
im so mad that they're not actually around a table on this one
Loved the movie....great job!
Ah, this was fun to watch, you can just tell that everyone put passion into this! ^-^
Such amazing performers and then there’s Ansel
I- I felt he didn't do terrible but was just outshined by everyone else. He was great! But everyone else was phenomenal
When the original WSS film was released I probably saw the movie more than 10 times. It blew me away and still does. I look forward to seeing this new version and will remain open but find it difficult for any remake version to top the brilliant energy of the original.
You have to keep us updated on what you think!!
@@audreymirandarusselman I posted another thought that summarizes my feelings about WSS. In brief, any production pales compared to the brilliance of the original musical score by Bernstein and collaboration with Sondheim and others in which the productions exist. See my other post! Thanks! Have a blessed 2022!
I loved the film
*So nice to finally see a Polish woman get a chance to play Maria in West Side Story!*
I found the choreography in the first West Side Story was far more incredible that the latest.
Well the first choreography was old Hollywood.
I thought the new one was fine, even great for the most part. Except for America. They cut so much choreography from that number, and Ariana DeBose is such a mindblowing dancer, it just felt like a missed opportunity to me.

You are all great...
i really, really love Mike
I really, really love Ariana and David!
6:11 a AUDÁCIA em falar q não importa saber a língua ou experimentar a comida pra ser considerada latina, ser latina não é uma personalidade que vc usa pra conseguir um papel. Espero q ela tenha mudado esse pensamento burro.
She won’t change … look up 🆙 “NPD “ narcissistic personality disorder. 😮 100 💯
Most ppl think NPD they mistake with Malignant NPD. Like snappy angry . 😤
But classic ones r Smart / into singing dancing 💃🏻arts sports police , rich . High achieving but they don’t use those skill to connect but to think others r beneath them .
You guys deserve so much love you are amazing and you guys are amazing 🤩
EDIT: just realized I said amazing twice lol 😂 you deserve both of them! :)
A whole lot of nothing is what i heard... a whole lot of fluff and filler with no real substance... i can understand Rita Moreno's story BUT these young actors who yell racism dont know what it is...they always go looking to the past without realizing they havent felt racism...they have been privileged all this time...not only am i the one who wrote this...i am also an hispanic😂
Loved the film and the cast. I'll be buying the CD soundtrack and the movie DVD. Sooo much better than the original and I love meeting all these new young stars. "There's a place for us" is one of my favorite Broadway songs. I was taken to see the original movie as a young child by my father who loved these shows and music.
So much better than the original; slow your role.
What did Mike say at 22:50 ? I couldn’t understand :(
it sounds like he said “there was plexiglass” or something similar cause rita was talking about how their were real holes that they could fall through
Why didn't they bring Russ Tamblyn for a cameo role?
Russ Tamblyn and Richard Beymer both visited the set. It doesn't appear that George Chakiris got to visit, though.
The actor who played the role of "Tiger" of the Jets from the 1961 movie had a cameo role in this movie. You could see him in the "America" scene.
Russ was great!
Why am I just realizing that Ariana was the bullet in Hamilton 💀
THATS WHY SHE LOOKS SO FAMILIAR
Westside story was one of the most heartbreaking things for me shows movies for me because of Tony dying because there’s a movie called The fault in our stars and he dies in that one to but also me being a Latina young woman things that are happening hang in that movie and it’s still happening today like he is nothing that you can change but like it’s j
At 90, Rita has had incredible facework. Would love to know who her surgeon is.
that's a cheap shot, but probably true. on second thought some who have facework look like crap, ie. Madonna
@@DonQwantsyou it might not actually be negative! (Although it's likely it's just a low blow) but if she did get work done I could not tell! If I decided I wanted surgery I would want a surgeon like hers! People honestly shouldn't be ashamed of plastic surgery (do what makes you feel confident)
Brown don’t break down. And black don’t crack. 😉
Omg I love this cast (Puts the pie splat emoji over Ansel Elgort's face)
Did they watch the 1961 West Side story
i’m sure they did! rita moreno was anita in that version!
They all did. In all the interviews, they all mentioned how they've always aspired to play a character in the musical when they were younger.
This cast ❤
If this film is ripe for do agains, I would like to know how Anita felt after she was solely responsible for causing the death of Tony?
I feel like Anita would consider it justice. Bernardo killed Riff, Tony killed Bernardo, Chino killed Tony…and Chino goes to jail. The question is what Anita and Maria will do now.
I will watch! 😊
Anyone notice how eloquent the ladies were compared to the dudes 😎

I liked Tony and Maria in this movie, and Anita, probably will get a the Oscar.
I love this new one, but overall, still the original is better to me,
and I miss Jerome Robinson's choreograph .
Steven Spielberg's version left me thinking no no no please no more remakes.
That is the best thing, (and possibly the only thing) I live about the new movie. It is real people playing the real parts they were supposed to play. Not a bunch of white people in dark makeup, and the amount of Spanglish in the movie is fab. The direction was weird lol.
crazy how weve all brushed ansels multiple grooming and assault allegations under the rug for this movie. hollywood is so hypocritical.
I feel he’s been no where for this movie’s press aside from this interview. None of the cast tags him or posts about him, he hasn’t been in many other interviews, etc. In fact, even in this interview there seems to be tension between him and others.
he was miscast as Tony
I felt Maria and Tony's big moment meeting at the dance fell flat but the rest of the film was outstanding.
