Rachel Zegler & the Cast of 'West Side Story' On Steven Spielberg's Remake | Around the Table
/ ew
Mike owned the role of Riff in this. Despite his character's issues, he was charismatic, terrifying and believable.
Well put.
Absolutely agree - it’s a fantastic cast but he acts everyone else off the set
He was totally the best thing about the movie... not to take anything away from the rest of the cast!
He was excellent, his character issues including, very charismatic, but he wasn't terrifying or believable...for a real punk, no, not at all, but nevertheless a charismatic player who very much influences and makes the film.
I wish I was in that Movie
Rachel was a great discovery! Can’t believe this is her 1st feature film. She’s so charismatic and eloquent in interviews, too. Ariana DeBose shines in every scene she’s in. Amazing movie!
Rachel has been acting since age 7 or earlier so it a pro.
@@jenniferwise8515 She hasn't acted since she's 7, she started singing very early though and starred in school musicals.
DeBose practically stole the film, she stole every scene she was in.
Absolutely she was great
This comment did not age well at all
I was blown AWAY by this movie. This cast is a force to be reckoned with.
Have you even seen the movie?
@@sandraromero6601 Yes lol, and they were very good
I’ve watched it twice this week 😁
@@sandraromero6601 yup. Oscar worthy
Interesting to hear people who pretend for a living pontificating on these matters! Pure word vomit!
The way David, Ansel, Rachel, Mike and specially Ariana look at Rita when she talks, that admiration, respect , love truly is beautiful to see. 😍
So do you believe those words?
@@sandraromero6601 what do you mean lmao? I truly don’t believe you’ve seen the film
11:21 Wow Mike singlehandedly said “Yup, Riff and Tony are fruity, what are you gonna do about it?” And I love him for that
The energy between Riff and Bernardo in the first fight as well
Like...are we entirely sure Tony and Maria are the heart warming lovers lmao
He didn’t even say that
@@carolineauckerman3333 he totally did
Mercutio has spoken
right finally someone says it!! WSS is extremely fruity and no one can change my mind
I would LOVE to have more Rachel/Mike action. It seems like they get along so well and their voices together would be lovely!
Yeah it be great to see Rita moreno
No it wouldn’t
It would I agree with you!
@@greatoffersdaily5756 lol wtf
1 hand 1 heart should have been sung by Tony and Msrie though though
6:14 of course it matters. Ethnicity it's not only about genetics, it's mostly about culture. How can you be latin if you never experienced latin's culture? That doesn't makes sense.
I say this being latina myself
Not everyone has the same ressources, abilities and possibilities. That does not make them any less latin than someone who knows or has experienced more. Just because you don’t speak the language or don’t eat the food or don’t live around other Latin people does not change how you were born and where you come from. Instead of saying these people are not the same as you, teach them and understand them and their circumstances but do not deny someone’s roots and rights.
@maya432 "the language"... this just shows how much she does not know about the CULTURES. We don't speak a language, we speak many languages. You think being latino is an ethnicity but, actually, being latino IS a culture, not a skin tone, not your appearance. Again, her approach shows how little she knows about it, and that's enough to know that she's AMERICAN.
Mike Faist's face at 15:11 is an actual representation of all of us looking at Rachel after the movie. And she seems like such a great person too!
Oh my god, this comment section is cringe gold
@@soriba391 no it aint
@@lauren6992 it is indeed
6:14 This production made such a big deal of being "the first authentic retelling of West Side Story"... but then cast a group of people playing Puerto Rican but who can't speak Spanish conversationally. Language is an important part of culture that allows for understanding and the passing of traditions. Yes, it is possible to pass down traditions even if you can't speak the language fluently, but in order to fully understand the meaning, significance, and nuances behind the stories and traditions passed down--language is the bridge. They didn't even provide any Spanish interviews in the press junkets for this movie... so my question: Who was this for?
that's not true. Many Sharks are fluent in Spanish.
Ariana DeBose caught my heart with her dancing and passion. Rachel is a doll and sings like an angel. The guys were perfect as both menacing and empathetic. The thing I admire most is the "kids" playing their icons, and giving it a totally fresh interpretation. Remember ow many people said, you can't re-film WSS.
This movie was so good. My new obsession. Cant wait to see it streaming on Disney+ and other places. It’s gonna bring so much happiness.
It’s gonna be streaming on Disney+? That’s amazing! I’m gonna watch literally every single day
My new obsession too! I listen to the soundtrack & rewatch the cast interviews (like this one) every single day/nite!!! LUV Ansel!!! 🥰😍🥰
6:14 yes it matters
Watched the movie on the last day of 2021, completely blown away...One of the best ones of 2021! Just look at this group of talented people who bring such vitality, diversity, joy and incredible performances on the big screen. I especially loved Mike's performance as Riff. This interview is so fun to watch too!
I loved David bringing in that point about Tybolt! Every character's back story was improved in this.
Each person seems so humble and yet so well spoken and passionate about the story. They all seem like great people.
google ansel elgort and see what comes up. what a great dude
@@ashleypaige5907 I wasn't eben talking about him. I know there were allegations made about him. I still think the rest of the cast was great.
Although we don't know if it's true, so for now he's innocent until proven guilty
@@ashleypaige5907 You don’t even know him though
@@joewhitehead3 Neither do you
This movie has truly blown me away
When they make the movie version of the Broadway musical "Memphis" they should cast Arianna Dubose and Mike Faist as the leads with Spielberg directing.
Omg their chemistry would be off the charts, imagine the dance sequences
What do you mean it doesn't matter if you speak the language or eat the food? What is culture to you? just a skin color? latino is not a race, it is a culture, of course our language and our food matters. We get all of these american people with absolutely no respect for our culture pretend to be latino and everyone claps while no one acknowledges how they are appropriating our culture. Why do you respect native american culture, indian culture, but not all of the different cultures that make latin america? why do you think you can just pretend? This is terrible and honestly I'm surprised people are not pointing it out.

Concordo!!!
She’s saying you don’t HAVE to speak the language or eat the food in order to still be proud of your roots, which is true.
Ariana's face everytime Ansel speaks 😂
I really loved the scene with Tony and the Jets with the holes in the floor and the gun, fantastic sharp and terrifying all at the same time. I hope they get so many awards for this performance.
Favorite part. With the song “Cool” 🎵🎵🎵
Yeah, "Cool" seems to be an overlooked masterpiece in the movie.
me too!
It was so extremly attractive omg I fell for them
I loved it too. Stephen Spieldberg "fixed" for me the scenes I used to scroll through in the 60's film version like "Officer Krumpke" and "Cool". I was squealing with excitement when I saw it for the first time.
Rita Moreno the embodiment of generosity, grace, experience, dang girl. She's sitting there, about 90 years old listening to and admiring/congratulating a woman literally 70 years younger in Maria/Rachel. And the others actors too. They're all earnestly describing the decades-ago conditions/scenarios they're back-storied-with, with Rita an actual person experiencing the reality.
This movie made me breakdown in tears. The best movie i have ever seen. I cannot describe the emotions i felt. I just cant. Beautiful casting UGH SO GOOD
I absolutely love Mike Faist he is so talented and funny
Unfortunately, I did not watch the original West Side Story. My first introduction to WSS was from Glee. This is the second version I’ve seen and I loved it. Riff just took the spotlight for me. I love Rachel Zegler. Her voice is phenomenal and I would love to see more of her singing.
I might watch the original West Side Story, but I tend to watch the remakes before the originals, and most of the time I like the remakes more.
riff is the best character......mike is charismatic, handsome and amazing
Anita... is the best character
She's literally Latina...
@@krustomer Ana de Armas, Salma Hayek, Anya Taylor Joy and Zoe Saldana are real Latinas, Rachel is just a gringa who makes a fool of herself and doesn't represent us at all.

This movie really is a tremendous and overwhelmingly moving piece of cinematic art!!
David Alvarez is the bass player of this group interview, keeping to himself lol There's always that one person that doesn't get as much time to share
I guess others are just talkative
When you don't know what to say, is it better to keep silent .
I was completely spellbound while watching the film....wow, what a film......this is one of he best films I have seen in last 3/4 years. Loved all the performers..... saw the heavenly spark in Tony's eyes when he first expressed his love for Maria..... I salute the master story teller called Steven Spielberg .....
I watched this 2 nights ago on IMAX. It was PHENOMENAL!
What a phenomenally thoughtful group of actors. This is such a beautiful piece of work that will be with us for a long time. (Side note: I love that Ariana and Rita are wearing the same thing they wore in the ABC interview - obviously a long day of press, making their eloquence all the more remarkable).
The insight we learn from listening to the cast talk among themselves is important to understand on a deeper level what it was like to make a movie like WSS 2021…. The months of rehearsals to learn and perfect the dance numbers was no easy task. The entire cast is brilliant. I project a successful future for all of them. Thus far, I watched the movie three times.
Okay but I love that all the Jets bought every woman on set a rose! That is the sweetest thing I think I have ever heard!
11:17 lmao i love this cast
“I’m just saying, you’re in the way.” 😂
All of them are so talented!
This is definitely the best version! The way they've added bits to the story to make more sense of it like Tony going to jail, and having gone out with Graziella who's now Riff's girl -and add a modern touch- there were even references to what's going on today (like Tony telling Maria that he was 'in freefall off the tallest building -think 9/11- until he met her, and the police ordering a lockdown-nuff said!) and Anybodys being transgender instead of a tomboy, and a reason for the feud (their neighbourhood being knocked down to build homes for the rich). I really loved this version of 'America' where it turned into a street carnival and showed how life could be without racism. Also the fact that Rachel sang her own songs instead of another singer, as in the original, was better, And bringing Rita Moreno back as Doc's Puerto Rican widow really worked, especially having her sing 'Somewhere'- and the fact that she too loved an American, and would have hoped to see Maria and Tony marrying and the gangs becoming mates.
Writing the script took Tony Kushner 5 years. The script was finished even before the pandemic, so this line is such a sad coincidence. Loved this new adaptation and I hope it will win a lot of awards.
D'you mean Tony and Graziella's relationship wasn't in the original? That makes the new version amazing! First time I watched it I missed it when they mentioned Tony and Graziella's relationship, but spotted it in Graziella's eyes when she saw Tony at the gym, just two seconds and her eyes told their stories without words. Beautiful!
The original version was the best hands-down!
I think the original version was better but this was also excellent I love both of them original and Stephen Spielberg's Wedy side story❤
A brilliantly done movie! Bravo to the cast, the crew and Mr. Spielberg! 👏👏👏🎶🎬🎶🤣🤣🤣
Great remake with a great cast directed by the great Steven Spielberg.
David Alvarez is up in here like 'dude im too hungover for this'
I hate the negative reviews ansel elgort is getting he was great in the role and I feel honestly that critics are being smug and over analyzing his performance because he is the most high profiled among the cast
i think compared to everyone else…. bc everyone else was LITERALLY flawless, he’s easy to pick apart.
He's still great tho
He did a fine job as did the rest of the cast!
I don’t understand the mike love. The jets were forgettable.
hes getting negative reviews because he has multiple sexual assault and grooming allegations. not because he is high profile
DAVID ALVAREZZZZ
I hope the movie wins an Oscar and that Steven Spielberg (best director) and Rachel Zegler also win Oscars!!
Ariana’s outfit is so great! Lol Anita dressed as Maria
I remember watching West Side Story (1961 film). My 7th grade class did the Play. I was chosen to do Maria out of 22 girls. It was awesome. Standing Ovation was the best part😉

In the movie, I think Ansel did a good job. However, there are allegations against him that are unsavory and definitely shouldn’t be taken lightly. I found the choreography in the first West Side Story was far more incredible that the latest.
Well the first choreography was old Hollywood.
I thought the new one was fine, even great for the most part. Except for America. They cut so much choreography from that number, and Ariana DeBose is such a mindblowing dancer, it just felt like a missed opportunity to me.

When the original WSS film was released I probably saw the movie more than 10 times. It blew me away and still does. I look forward to seeing this new version and will remain open but find it difficult for any remake version to top the brilliant energy of the original.
You have to keep us updated on what you think!!
@@audreyrusselman I posted another thought that summarizes my feelings about WSS. Why didn't they bring Russ Tamblyn for a cameo role?
Russ Tamblyn and Richard Beymer both visited the set. It doesn't appear that George Chakiris got to visit, though.

If this film is ripe for do agains, I would like to know how Anita felt after she was solely responsible for causing the death of Tony?
I feel like Anita would consider it justice. Bernardo killed Riff, Tony killed Bernardo, Chino killed Tony…and Chino goes to jail. The question is what Anita and Maria will do now.
I liked Tony and Maria in this movie, and Anita, probably will get a the Oscar.
I love this new one, but overall, still the original is better to me,

They all did. In all the interviews, they all mentioned how they've always aspired to play a character in the musical when they were younger.
mike faist is my celebrity crush idk why he is so attractive to me bruhh
I will watch! 😊
This cast ❤
This was my first time watching West Side Story FULLY and not just scenes of the musical numbers. I knew the story was inspired by Romeo and Juliette and addressed racial problems (even though those who made it were racist/prejudice in their methods), but I had never sat down and watched the film or seen the musical. I must say while it did clearly show the racial problems but the main plot at the forefront was Maria and Tony’s love story. I hate their love story and don’t understand how people look at them as this romantic couple, same thing with R&J. At first it was cute but it moved so fast and then towards the end I hated Maria, Tony, the candy shop lady, Riff (as a character), the Jets, and just everyone. How can you love someone that killed your brother and even sleep with them just minutes after the crime, and then want to runaway with them?! Like I wanted to slap Maria five times!! That being said the Anita character stole the show for me because she was the only thing keeping me from not turning off the TV (and Riff). Ariana did such a wonderful job with this role because for people like me who did not grow up watching the musical or studying it we very easily could have hated the storyline of the musical. Anita, Riff, the choreography, and music really carried this music for the general public.
Rita picking her teeth at 12:40...🫣
Does it matter? Good nay GREAT QUATE from rz.
That is the best thing, (and possibly the only thing) I live about the new movie. It is real people playing the real parts they were supposed to play. Not a bunch of white people in dark makeup, and the amount of Spanglish in the movie is fab. The direction was weird lol.
crazy how weve all brushed ansels multiple grooming and assault allegations under the rug for this movie. hollywood is so hypocritical.
I feel he’s been no where for this movie’s press aside from this interview. None of the cast tags him or posts about him, he hasn’t been in many other interviews, etc. In fact, even in this interview there seems to be tension between him and others.

I've said before that I wasn't that interested in this new film version because I loved, and still love, the classic from '61 from Robert Wise. But after I did choose to see it, I got to say, it is a great film. I still prefer most actors from the 1961 version (that off course includes Rita Moreno as Anita) but cinematography-wise it's sheer beauty. I do, on the other hand, think the lead male-actors in this Spielberg-version are almost as good as the ones in Wise's film. That, i'm sorry to say, does not count for the female leads. I still prefer Nathalie Wood's Maria and, I say again, Moreno's Anita. The actresses in this one just don't have the personality and radiance of Wood and Moreno(even if they didn't sang their own parts. Wich in in Moreno's case was a utter disgraceful decision from the bosses at the filmcompany). But the shots of Spielberg's now long-time DP Janusz Kaminski are magical, production design is top-notch and off course there's always the heavenly words and music of Sondheim and Bernstein. In all, this new one is absolutely worth of seeing and even owning in your film-collection but don't, if you already have it, dismiss the old one. It still is, and always be, a true classic.
I know Rita is in the Spielberg film, but how to the other 1961 film actors like Russ Tablyn and George Chair is fill about it?
