Tal vs Botvinnik 1960
Moscow
No sooner did Mikhail Botvinnik regain his title, the chess world became entranced by charismatic young Latvian named Mikhail Tal. Tal won the 1958 interzonal tournament at Portoroz, then helped the Soviet Union to retain the Chess Olympiad; before going on to win the 1959 Candidates Tournament with 20 out of 28 points--a point and a half ahead of second place Paul Keres.
Tal often sacrificed material in search for the initiative in chess. With such intuitive sacrifices, he created vast complications, and many masters found it impossible to solve all the problems he created over the board, though deeper post-game analysis found flaws in some of his conceptions. Although this playing style was scorned by ex-World Champion Vasily Smyslov as nothing more than "tricks", Tal convincingly beat every notable grandmaster with his trademark aggression.

"It was in this position that..." Never gets old😂
so does, "nice idea by so and so" :p
It was in this position Botvinnik knew... He f@cked up.
I love how in game 21 of these series he got the full beard back hahaha
thats what she said
Naaah.. those are purely gold 😀👌🏻
I can no longer watch modern matches. Tal playing chess is art and the philosophy of can't be a champion giving up on move 13 is beautiful
The series finally started, this is what i was waiting for, let's see how the magician from riga became champion!
I'm currently reading Tal-Botvinnik 1960 and I'm so glad you decided to cover all of these games! To anyone who hasn't read the book: check it out!
I've been hitting refresh over and over on my browser waiting for today's game!
Jeff, bro don't waste so much time on just 1 move 😉
This is one of my favorites out of all the videos you’ve ever done. I love the way you show us why certain lines wouldn’t work, as often they are moves that I was considering. Don’t know how you do it, but I’m glad you do.
this is why we I like ur channel so much, u dont just present the moves, u also start with a little history lesson, and then also explain the some of the possibilities that the players could have been thinking about, great stuff
"hmmm... maybe Black could try to trap the queen with Rh1"
*explains no less than three times in the next three moves why you cannot do it*
"hmmm... maybe I should switch to playing marbles"
Me too man dont feel bad
this is my favorite series from one of the best youtube channels Ive seen. Tal!!!
Wow! This was an INCREDIBLE game. This is one of my favorites I’ve seen in a long time. So much going on at one time. Rarely do you see a game at such a high level without castling!
You explain the games so beautifully! God bless you Agadmator.
I fell in love with this channel.its my cup of tea and my dinner
Yeah I really enjoyed this game for some reason. I've watched hundreds of his videos. The analysis of this particular game was very special for some reason I can't figure out.
@@KancerKowboy Perhaps thanks to the additional content brought by Tal's book on the match, I think it makes it all extra interesting.
I was waiting for the new video when I saw tal in the title. Made my day.
BEST SERIES ON RUclips .(PERIOD)
Agadmator the Best no question it’s funny when I watch other streamers some of their viewers go on and on but those that have a real
Clue know The Agadmator is Best
IS NOBODY GOING TO MENTION THE BEARD? WHERE IS THE BEARD?
Captured
It was caught in a fork
Oscar O. It resigned
haha nice comments i shaved it too its horrible
Sacrificed in honor of Tal
You look younger Antonio ! Awesome series, i improved so much only from watching 1959 Candidates videos from you, iam so surprised ! Thanks a lot !
kabatovec007 i noticed too
"There is always time to terrorize the King on E1". Classic!
Yeah, that was entertaining wording
Thank you for your channel. My son and I watch a game on your channel everyday after supper. Neither of us is very good at chess, but we really enjoy watching the pros especially with your analysis and explanations of the possible variations.
Thanks for finally having Botvinnik V. Tal games, may be his playlist too.
Great I love that you made a more detailed analysis. This is by far my favorite RUclips channel
19:18/2101 What a move and what an historical narration........... Well done Agadmator
Brillaint video, thank you Agadmator. If only Tal hadn't suffered such ill health (and looked after himself a bit better), he's have dominated for years and years.
Tal game = automatic like... Love to watch Tal games... Thanks for uploading it :D
“This is possible with correct play.” *my chances of winning have left the chat*
The best title you ever came up with. I really enjoy your chess commentary. Keep making videos.
I have to say. This is one of the best videos you have ever made. Starting from the enthusiasm, but also the depth and rythim you've applied within each variation analysis. Thank you! Cant wait for the next :)
Wow what a beautiful game. Thanks for making it longer to give us backstory and ideas behind the moves.
Wait a second, Magnus Carlsen became world champion by forcing Anand to a draw ;)
Tal also drew in the last game of this match to become world champion
after winning 3 games?
Beating Botvinnik must have been deeply satisfying for Tal for a number of reasons.
mostly sexual
@@nigelfarage4119 correct it, chessual!
Thank you for doing this series!
i have watched all your videos. and with all the explanation, this is the most thrilling video you ever posted.
Out of all of your videos, I think I learned the most watching this one. Keep it up!
Great game great video ironic only two days from the 2024 World Championship with Ding and Gukesh . This was an exciting game Tal did seem in control throughout the game . Two legendary players great to see . I hope Gukesh can open with a win in his first game vs Ding anything is possible Thanks so much Agadmator
Every day I wait for your videos, in my bad mood you make me feel alright. Thank you for uploading constantly and you look way better without facial hair.
Nice video as always, Tal's games are entertaining and inspirationals, such as your analysis! Keep up the good work, greetings from Italy!🇮🇹
#suggestion Hey Antonio, there was a single game after the Anand's Tal memorial Victory, where the team of 3 past world champions Karpov, Anand and Kramnik played against a team of 3 Russian talents. Each player played a move in series. I think it would be fun if you showed and analyzed that game. Cheers!
I know. I will cover it :)
Cool... Thanks 👍
Agad da god
@@rockybhagat he did it thanks for your suggestion , it was a great game b
This channel has really boosted my rating, thank you agadmator!
As Mikhail Botvinnik contemplated playing c4, did he know that I would be contemplating the move with him all these years later while eating cinnamon toast in my bedroom?
Amazingly well played by both sides and yet Tal crushes. Excellent game and excellent explanations. Thank you.
This is Blaze from the future. Message to Antonio - never shave your beard or the universe shall suffer dire consequences, he he :);)
I like it
Shave it. You look 5 years younger lol
What do you call someone who doesn't understand how plurals work?
Amen?
matt hill *woman
Finally you uploaded it, I was very excited for this series. 😍
I love your long analysis videos ❤
Tal as usual plays amazing
Love it. Before I started watching your youtube videoes, I couldn't anything about chess. Just the basics. And this has brought me into some thinking while I play. Thanks
I’m new to chess and have watched many of your videos, and I found this game to be particularly beautiful. Great content!
THANK U for doing this series!
"There''s always time to terrorize the king on e1" - agadmator
SUCH A KNOWLEDGEABLE LAD! INFORMATIVE AND EDUCATIONAL!
i never even noticed that you had a beard but damn that change made it clear enough
Wow, for once I actually got the idea of c4 at 17:45 because if black captures with a pawn, you get light squared bishop captures with atack on the queen and the rook, and you pretty much have to give up this rook, and if you do not capture the pawn, you are getting pawn captures on d5 with atack on the bishop, and in this variation you either give up bishop and queen for a pawn and the rook, OR you ignore the pawn and get pawn at d6 with check, and essencially dealing with the past pawn you have no good way to deal with since the d8 is under bishop's aim. I feel myself like my brain is fat with chess lore from all of the time I spend watching those games. Thank You sincirely, Radic.
'This is amazing!!! and its is even more amazing to those who have read "Tal-Botvinnik, 1960 by Mikhail Tal" you do capture the essence.
My favorite world championship series.. Looking forward to some fireworks...
Thank you Agadmator.
This was just a wonderful game, you need to play very actively to beat an exelent player like botvinnik like this, thank you magician
Fairly new to watching chess and you introduced Tal into my world. Thank you he was a marvel
Really enjoying all of your videos!Good job men!!
I was cheering for Botvinnik, since He's one of my all-time favourite players. And when I've heard that "it was in this position", I was like "noooooooo 😭"
my favorite game right here. please give us more agadmator
Awesome video as always keep going. Love the Tal games
I'm so proud of myself for seeing c4 at the end
Firstly Antonio is at his best here, so TY sir. For me the Winawer variation was a bizarre choice here by Botvinnik, and frankly the game set the tone of the ENTIRE match in my view. Obviously his seconds had to have approved of the Winawer as an option here in game 1, and clearly having had reviewed Tal's games (read:style) it's an approval which was horrid imo. The Winawer invites serious sharp complications which play much more to Tal's style than Botvinnik's. We know Tal's thoughts as to what Botvinnik will play VS E4, but we have no clue as to what the thought process was in Botvinnik's camp that led to this opening. Further, the champion had lost but a couple of games for many years (he/they thought he was invincible?) and to not play the much more passive caro kann defense (or some such more passive defense) Vs a player they knew was genius tactician was illogical. The error was further compounded because the psychological effect on the champion of a possible loss in game 1 seems not to have been clearly assessed....... What I would have given to been in that tournament hall for game 6.....
Brilliant game, which was only made better by your in depth analysis !
Excellent game with excellent analysis. thank you so much Agadmator. 😊
Wow! I'm gonna have a shot of rum now to celebrate Tal's victory.
17:21 " and here you're Tal .. you have to be Botvinnik " LOOOOL 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
To beat
Your description (down below) for this game was fantastic, screencapped
Just starting this wondrful series and already vast-vast knowledge to grab...
thanks for the info behind the match, really adds a storyline to it
It took few matches for botvinnik to understand little of tal
One of the most enlightening games!
Love these show downs between the legends of chess where neither side castles!
I dont even play Chess that much regularly but I love your videos and watch at least one of them daily. The way you present a game is what makes it different. However, please keep the intros to maximum 2 minutes.
TAL:The Anti Logic
Crazy game. Tal is no joke.
As an american, you have the best accent and voice imo
Finally! Thanks
You are good analyser of a game great channel keep up the good work!!
This video has definitely improved my day
For an average player like me this is an insanely complicated game of chess. These guys were both off the scale in ability and all this is well before computers took over. I would have flipped by move 20 and run screaming out the hall! I don't think we will ever see chess like this again at the highest level as the fear of losing is so much greater than the joy of winning. Great times they must have been. I think both of these players were engineers by profession too so they certainly knew how to 'construct' a position!
I love your chess videos!! ❤❤❤
Great video.
general zod agadmator 👽
Tal is amazing and great video agadmators
What a title... great vid as usual agad
very thorough analysing nice video bro 😉
Man I cant wait to see the next games cmon ! :)
when u get the question moves right, its a good feeling
Tal is fast becoming my favorite player
Best chess channel. Less yapping more content
Came back here for some refreshment after the Carlsen vs Caruana bot fight
beautiful breakdown
Vert good job, and unique analyses men !!!
Thanks for another video agadmator
Wow, freshly shaven agadmator
one of your best videos
I wished Tal never became as ill as he'd become. Imagine the endless string of magical insanity in his rising stardom. May have been WC longer.
I almost shrieked when I saw this upload.
I am like Tal... The only difference b/w I and Tal is that after losing my first game in the tournament, I do not stop loosing until the tournament is over... :-)
I like all your videos and have seen hundreds but for some reason I really enjoyed the analysis of this game. It seems unique somehow.
Not sure what it is. Maybe its because Tal is playing more positionally . . .
Tal and his c4 move is the solution to every problem in the game of chess. xD
idk if anyone will ever see this but around 8:20 agadmator missed queen captures on A3 to block checkmate and continue
I must actually be learning something from these videos. I know it wasn't that hard but c4 was the first one I actually got.
Nice video, Agadmator.
