Bowen Family Systems and How It Works with Couples

In this video I break down Bowen Family Systems and how it works with couples in an overfunctioning and underfunctioning couple in couples counseling. This is a pattern in relationships explained by Murray Bowen's Family Systems theory and it's something I see all the time in my therapy practice. Recognizing it though is easy once you understand the various forms it takes, so this video has a lot of examples of what the overfunctioner and underfunctioner dynamic looks like in a marriage or relationship. I also explain the Bowen model and give techniques and ideas on how to address it.

Can you be the over functioning partner in one relationship and the under functioning partner in the next relationship?

Yep! These are kinda fluid roles that go back and forth. You can even be the over functioner AND under functioner in the same relationship over time.
