  • Slash needs no introduction as an iconic guitarist, and his tone is often referenced as one of the most recognizable guitar sounds in rock. And much of that sound has to do with his Seymour Duncan Alnico 2 humbuckers - or, more specifically, the signature Slash APH-2 humbuckers that Seymour Duncan voiced for the guitarist based on the original Alnico 2 pickups in his famous Kris Derrig Les Paul.

This new 2.0 Slash Set is really, really good! I've tried them all and even the WIZZ and Jonsey Blues versions, the 2.0 is the sound I was looking for the whole time, seem to have a little more low end and perfect sustain. When I roll to clean it doesn't get thin sounding like the other sets.

I completely agree. I just bought mine last month. I've been using my main Gibson LP (490R/489T) for last 23 years for all gigs and recording. Then I just opened my old guitar to clean it with all these dents and scratches... then started doing some cosmetic work: i.e., re-staining, modifying on the body, and clear coating, etc.. Lol. Now, my old LP looks so NEW and customized and beautiful and I realized, I needed something else to complement with new guitar. Without telling you the whole story...so I was thinking about get another JB4 (Hot Rod set) like my current Ibanez, or another Seymour Duncan set with three other guitars (having another rock/heavy pickups), or getting another Classic 57 (like my GoldTop Gibson LP), or going with current EMG (which I have one set with my other LP).
At the end of day, I almost pull triggered getting a new Classic 57 Plus set. Then I came across these SD "Slash 2.0". It was a tossed between these Classic 57 Plus and Slash 2.0 (even though I have no idea if I'm going to like them). I took a risk getting these Slash pickups. And man, I'm so glad I got these Slash 2.0 pickups. They are very similar like my Classic 57s (but yet different), and a lot stronger on the bass and treble. I do noticed, they're NOT muddy at all. All my rhythms and solos (strumm'in & mute, shredding, etc.) went to another level having these strong on the low/bass/treble. I've never cared about Slash's sound during G&R's era. Lol.....until I put them into my guitar. Suddenly, my music (and all other Classic rock, jazz, blues, country, rock/hardrock/metal) it got so better than what I hoped. To me, I"m so surprised, a lot people haven't yet gott'n these.

Based on this video they sound just like my slash version 1.0 Duncan's but with a little more low end and maybe a touch more compression they also sound very different from the gibson slash Bucker which I think are great pickups but don't sound all that slash like. The basic tonal foundation is there there is a slash like basic mid range structures but they don't have the clarity of the Duncan's and sound like Gibson didn't spend enough time fine tuning them or dialing them in . They sound more like earlier stage of development proto type. I think they are a great overwound PAF type but the BB2 and BB3 do that very thing and do it better and I really don't get using the Burstbucker formula for a slash pickup set as slash didn't use PAFs in his main guitars so he never had pickups with uneven coil windings . I always found the 57 classic and classic plus to be more Slash like then Burstbuckers . The 57s have even coil
windings like all of the Duncan sets slash uses. The 57s were created before it was widely known even by gibson that part of
the reason PAFs sounded like the did was because of uneven coil windings which was completely unintentional due to the
Limitations of the early winding machines.

Hey jw, i have a new 2023 Gibson Les Paul std. 60’s. I loved the Unburst & 60s neck profile, was Not really a fan of stock 61’ Burstbuckers (Alnico 5’s, on multimeter both read approx around 7.5k installed from factory).
I recently had a set of Seymour duncan Slash 2.0 Alnico 2 pro’s installed in my 2023 60’s Gibson les paul standard. (Note i like slash but i got pickups due to what tone i liked best that i felt was what i wanted in my LP to sound like & this set seemed to scatch my itch (loud, little but not overally grittier, rich tone on Slash 2.0’s).
After Slash 2.0’s were installed they read 8.6ish on neck & and 9.36k on bridge (advertised as 8.8 neck/9.38 bridge, but was told the pots eat some of the resistance so id only get that exact reading by testing pickups by themselves/directly to multimeter..also jw if true)?. But Main thing i’ve noticed…overall like tone much better..but it feels like i can work with Vol knob to about 7 then lower then 5 is very very quiet , and same with neck knob pot), the sweep seems to be less then my SG & i think i would have noticed if the 61 BB’s had such a lack of sweep. Would higher outpout of different humbuckers effect vol/tone knobs?? I know i have 50 style wiring and i saw him peel back a braided wire and solder it to like top corner of each Vol Cap , let it dry and was basicslly done (aside from small reset up). Does all that sound nomal or should i look into any trouble shooting…installion or pots wise( all i know is 50s style with orange drop caps and i believe 500k pots). Thanks would love any input on lack of sweep on knobs since swap most lol

Been debaring buying SD slash 2.0 alnico II pro’s, or ThroBak SLE-101 PAF’s. Ive been playing an SG with 490/498t combo, which works good for that axe, but i need to swap the 61’ Burstbuckers that came in my Lss Paul 60s standard (great guitar qc wise, non weight relief 8.5lbs, slim neck which i like) but these 61’ BB’s sound terrible (uneven sounding tone/volume across the fretboard & a good amount of feedback, neck pup isnt nearly as bad as the bridge pup, but the notes sound super boomy on the low strings/notes, and the high’s arent dynmaic..theyre just high treble but kinda dull?, hard to put in words how bad they sound and unbalanced). All that being said, im looking to make this LP a keeper, the SD slash pups are wax potted & have high output, they obvs handle high gain well and sound good clean, but they do lack some of that character of a PAF top of line clone like Throbaks SLE 101’s; which are more microphonic, but have this natural crunch and clarity, they really capture that vintage tone, im just not sure how well they would sound with some gain added (i mainly like playing clasic rock from late 60s-mid 80s), i play at home usually thru a little tube Marshall Dsl 20c. Jw if the Throbak PAFs handle gain well and i noticed theyre unpotted, jw if with some decent gain theyre gonna sound to microphonic? Even on clean tones i can hear the pick attack varitions & etc clearly with the vintage PAF style pups. Not sure if i should play it safe & go with more modern humbucker like the SD Slash 2.0 alnico II Pro’s (wax potted to reduce feedback), or the vintage sounding Throbak SLE-101 PAF’s which are really articulate & snappy, but a little microphonic (unpotted, picks up more of an airy sound/feedback), just not sure how these vintage style PAF’s would handle tones like Randy Rhodes/Slashes/Santana lol, im pretty sure they can handle Zepp tones , but i dont wanna buy $679 pups just to sound like a few older bands and just sounding thin/chimmey when trying to make my own jams lol jw if the vintage PAF tone lives up to the legend or if i should play it safe with these SD slash pups that seem to have a smooth/warm tone that handles gain well, but more modern style humbucker

Just had my tech install these pups in my LP standard, 1st time ive ever swapped pups. 2 things i noticed that im not sure are normal? I was told it was but not sure if my tech was being 100% honest lol.
    1) when we plugged the pups in the multimeter they read 9.30 on the bridge & 8.80 on the neck (before they were installed , he connected them each to the multimeter to make sure they worked). After they were fully installed and in guitar, each pup read a little weaker on the multimeter, tech said it was cuz the 500k pots use/take some of that energy or something, which is normal for the pups to drop a little on the meter after installing, nature of the beast? Jw how true? It looked like he peeled back about 3/4 inch of the braided pup wire before soldering the wire to what looked to be top/side edge of the circle/metal pot.
    2) i noticed after everything installed, it seemed like my volume knob was versitile? Seemed like volume at 7 was much quieter then i remember it being before the pickup swap..cant tell if i just thought 10-7 was less draststic of a volume drop off when it had the stock pups or if its possible the tech poorly installed them and thats why i think the volume knob had more of an even sweep? He said the pickup installation would have nothing to do with the volume knob sweep..so maybe the knob is reacting different to the new SD slash 2.0’s vs my stock 61’ burstbuckers? Or maybe i just thought the volume knob had a more even sweep? Any help or input on the feedback after getting them put in would really help! Im clearly new to the tech part so not sure if my tech did a fine job or if i should have someone else take a look

Did you have different pots (potentiometers) installed with the pickups? It sounds like you had linear pots before and then logarithmic pots were installed with the new pickups.

    • @user-cd2cz3tv3u
      @user-cd2cz3tv3u 4 месяца назад +1

@@hjmism hey thanks for reply, but no i checked both factory specs from my 2004 SG standard (which for audio tapered pots are almost linear until u get down to 4-3 area (with original 490r/498t stock gibson pups still in them & have a great sweep).
As far as my 2023 new LP standard 60s unbust, they come stock with Audio Tapered pots and orange drop caps and “50s style wiring”; when i switched from the stock ‘61 burstbuckers to the Seymour Duncan Slash 2.0’s, they were easy to install (left pots stock , which are audio tapered aswell as my SG), but after swapping the 61 BB set of pups for my new SD Slash 2.0 set of pups (which do sound great and improved the guitar overall tone for sure)..,only thing weird i noticed was i really only have wiggle room (before i have to boost a setting on amp/pedal eq for more volume) when i roll both Vol. pots from 10-7…6.5 maybe, anythung under it sounds noticably quietier? I did not change the stock audio tapered pots on my 60’s 2023 LP Standard; but it seemed like i had more wiggle room with Vol. knobs & possibly even tone knobs when i had the stock 61’ burstbuckers? I do know the 61’ Burstbuckers were aninico 5’s (but were overall had less output when looking at specs & plugging them into mutlimeter before swapping…they floated around 7.5/7.3, and the new SD SlasH 2.0’s are listed as having 8.8 on neck and 9.38 on bridge (pre installed), when installed, my bridge stayed high output around 9.30-ish, but neck dropped a bit to about 8.4-8.6s after checking with multimeter after installing…i was told that even though theyre Alnico 2’s, due the pickups higher output, it effects the way they react to the pots (i called many guitar centers and asked + called Seymour Duncan and was curious if they ever heard of that *wanted to make sure installed correct + wanted to make sure nothing wrong with Slash 2.0 new set while under 21 day money back lol*; they told me at Seymour Duncan tech support that all pups effect the same pot slightly different and didnt think there was any issue with installing or pups (i guess they lose some ohms that they market them as after installing due to pots or something usuing up some of that magnetic power from the set of pups). To my tech they seemed normal to him, but i jusy remembered playing & having more tonal options from pots when stock 61 BBs were in there, but wasnt a fan of their overall tone. So i was happy to hear that apparently this can be normal when swapping pups and leaving the same pots and getting slightly/med. different response after a different set of pickups are replacing current pair..plus i believe the extra output is a factor as to why i have less of a sweep on vol. knobs before it becomes very quiet around 5-6 (compared to 10 its like i cut volume by 70% approx…basically accoustic as low as vol knob on 2 lol. So no red flags as far as my looking into the difference in that area and finding the brand new Lp standard with a AA maple top that has a slight tiger like looking burst from side angle, and more of a honeyburst when looking at it dead on straight..looks better (top wise) then what gibsons now offering in their Slash Victoria les pauls..& also mine has the legit current pups slash uses, not Gibson custombuckers. Also mine sinxce i got it brand new summer of 2023 , it looked great, felt great with 60s slim tapered neck, had a grade higher maple top then the 50’s and also came with grover tuners and the Gold knobs reflective tops (just like gibson did in 60s) and it also was NOT weight relieved (lucky it came in at 8.5lbs lol) , but i like new guitars and that was spot on to my dream les paul standard in feel & looks…only thing i wasnt crazy about the 61 BB pups..but knew i could always swap them for whatever i thought sounded like my ideal rock LP should sound like…and ended up with Seymour Duncan Slash 2.0 alnico 2 pro’s, sound great! Just was that 1 little thing bothering me since i’d never swapped pups on my SG 20 yrs i’ve had it …those set sound great for that axe aswell lol , i think my tech tried to see if id sell my 2004 standaed herritage cherry SG 3-4x..but it does anyrhing with gain from rolling stones to black sabbath tones great and without much effect help…just some amp tinkering and knob messing around , was a little disappointed i didnt have as much tinkering on my new LP 2023 60’s Standard after swappin pups, but small price to pay for a much better overall tone and just less wiggle room when it comes to the sweep on the vol. knobs/pots…10-7-6.5 is going from hard rock to pretty clean if im on a light crunch amp tone (playing thru some big 100watt Peavy at techs & play thru Marahall DSL 20c mostly at home or if im lazy to grab pedals , i’ll play thruc my Boss Katana MK2 100c).

Heck yah, man. It's rare to find a pickup set that can going back to 1950s-1980s classic rock to VH (brown sound) to Led Zeppelin, to Dream Theater, to Ozzy, to modern metal (At least to me) and doing G&R (if you want to sound exactly like Slash's stuff). BUT, it does not have like a, "10 / 10" out of High Gain. It's definitely 7 / 10 (depends on your amp). However, if you want to add alittle more Gain, then add a Compression or Overdrive pedal....then your in the 10 /10 Gain. OR maximize your Gain knob in your amp, then you're perfect to do Heavy Metal.

What do you mean by its a 7/10 without “high gain” (on amp?) i play thru Mashrall Dsl 20 & has a classic gIain channel (pretty clean, not as clean as fender deleuxe reverb but can make it sound pretty clean; then for a very noticable gain increase (i keep mt my gain only 1/4 way up on Ultra gain channel, but for more vintage, gotta roll that gain even a little less..generally 1/4 of ultra gain channels gain knob approx 1/4 up does the job for all classic rock (not into heavy metal or speed metal or drop tuning..at most e-flat if playing a song in that tuning, but 95% in standard). Not a fan of using pedals on the regual, so jw what u meant..had a boss Katana MkII 100 that had 22 build in effects and 5-6 channels to now my 1st tube amp (marshall dsl 20c). I still have looper & wah wah pedals that work great, but something in my 5 old Boss japan (early 80s i believe, they just recrently started having major resuced volume when i plug 9v attapter down a chain of (all boss) Superover drive/delay/chorus/octave/phaser. When i plug cables in theu the pedal board and powersupply is not engaged (light green), my volume/tone is normal, yet when i activate power supply, it chops volume in half & all effect pedals..although all pedals seem to turn off/on and the effects work along with the knobs on pedals? No idea if theyre all trrash or easy fix?).
But i gotta get rid of these 61 brust buckers, sound uneven (diffwrent volume from low string/note to high strings
/ note, uneven sounding, lack of anything special tone wise…any you can hear too much feed back (not sure if i dig the unpotted or if these pups sre too sensitve (tinny) and uneven..wondering if i should go with the slash 2.0’s or a vintage brand like Throbak/Monty PAF clone pick ups..i know rhe slash are wax potted to reduce feedback and nonwax will be more microphnic jw my best road fo go down for liking late 60s-80s rock and wanting “ that Les Paul sound” lol thank for anyone with the time
      Not at all
