Hi, Linda! My mom grew up near Graceland (before it actually became Graceland). She was a year older than Elvis, and went to Hamilton High School, the school for Blacks. He went to Humes High School. "Elvis Week" on on our local ABC station's "3:30 Movie" was what got me hooked on Elvis in the 1970s. Nice to meet ya! I bet you can't wait to see the movie next month! Elvis could sing anything and most people don’t realize how good he was in singing gospel music I saw him in concert 10row in Dayton Ohio when I was 10 years old I still remember that and iam so glad I went because those concerts will never be able to go again he loved his fans and gave millions away during his career

My cousin met Elvis in 1970 Las Vegas after a show. He said when Elvis walked into the room with the guys he was speechless. The room went quiet and people would just stare. Incredible....
The Beatles did the same thing. They walk into Elvis's house sat down and couldn't speak. Apparently Elvis said " if you guys are just going to sit there and stare at me I'm going to bed".
So many people said that. Whitney Houston said that. Whitney Houston's mother, who worked for Elvis, said that. Shelley Fabares said that. The guys who worked with him at that famous sound studio when he recorded hits like Suspicious Minds and Kentucky Rain --- they said that. There were a bunch of people who also said you could feel his energy even when he was outside or downstairs. That you could sense something was happening.

"If I Can Dream", The most powerfully inspirational and idealistic song ever performed. "Tender Feeling" My favorite song in the world since my late teens. Sorry for going off on a completely unrelated and pretty dark tangent. Elvis always struck a very emotional nerve with me, like for most of us I assume, and he's the sole reason for my flawless southern accent despite being Danish and never having visited those parts yet. Muslims are supposed, if possible, to pilgrimage to Mecca. To me, for hardcore Elvis fans, we should similarly try hard to swing by Graceland, preferable August 16 like my parents did for their 25th anniversary. They've never flown before or since and hate it, but when you gotta go, you gotta go, so... The guy who designed all his costumes for '68 Comeback --- Bill Belew --- was friends with the owners and he gave them all his original patterns. I`ve seen a lot of interviews from people like John Lennon, Keith Richards and other great musicians that where influenced by Elvis. One of the things they had in common was that they heard him on the radio first and was like: "Wow! What was that!?". So they realized they have heard something special before they ever saw a picture of him or seen Elvis on TV. He got it all. The voice, the new sound and setup, the looks,the moves, the extreme presence, aura and charisma, humbleness, etc. Even big Hollywood stars were stunned when being in his presence. He was a very special guy.
You're right. Robert Plant said that. I said that, and I was born in '65. I remember being in first grade, so, in the early '70s. I was watching TV, and a commercial came on for one of those K-Tel style records. It was a compilation album being advertised on TV. And the commercial opened up with a photo of Elvis, and the opening notes to Hound Dog. And here I am, a little first grader, in the '70s, not the '50s, and I'm hearing for the first time this song from the '50s, and I remember this so well --- I sat up straight like a rocket, my eyes went wide, and I turned to my mother and exclaimed, "Who is THAT?!!!". It's really remarkable. When I was in my 20s my dad and I took a road trip to Graceland. This was the early '90s. I was in a long line to get to the graves. And when I got to Elvis' grave I had this sense that something was happening. I didn't know what it was. But I remember it was the feeling like someone famous had pulled up -- -it was weird. I couldn't place my finger on just what it was. And it gradually dawned on me that my chest was heaving and I was crying. It was crazy. It was totally beyond my conscious control and awareness --- it was just my body reacting separate from my mind.

Talent, presence and passion, & generosity never know in this country before. He gave away cadillacs, homes & on & on. When HE did things ...it was news around the world. He was the FIRST music artist to be KNOWN around the world & broadcast around the world during his Hawaii concert. Elvis was the defination of cool and humble at the same time with talent that was head and shoulders above the rest...before the colonel enslaved him and stole his dreams and then he fell from his place of honor. It was a travesty what his "manager" did to him... betrail & lies that is what killed him... and he sunk into drugs and obesity and died. It is so sad what happens to a human being when they have no dreams left to live into...it is soul shattering & that took his life. I guess you are just too young to have a clear understanding of HOW MUCH this one man meant. My son was born on Elvis' birthday....in 1997. I had to have a planned C-section. I was given a 5-day choice of days I could have the baby...between the 8th and 13th of January. I chose Elvis' birthday, of course! This was also my doctor's anniversary date! :)

I’m 61 and have been an Elvis since age 6 or so. I really do not understand the comparisons of Elvis and Michael Jackson. They were very different musically, appealed to very different audiences and at very different points in popular music. Talking about who was better or any comparisons are irrelevant and really don’t matter a rat’s ass - in my humble opinion.

In August last year, I went to Memphis for my 4th time and did the candlelit vigil which has taken place on every anniversary of Elvis' death. The 40th anniversary was the biggest turn out. 70,000+ passed by his grave.

At 61, I like a lot of artists but since age 6, it has been ELVIS and then Springsteen at 19. The King and The Boss. Here Springsteen states Elvis impact which primarily took place in the 1950s. As a musical artist, Elvis could have continued to be influential and one important thing that could have made that happen was dumping The Colonel and hiring a manger who was supportive of Elvis as an artist. Bruce knew when he had to break it off with Mike Appel and eventually went with Landau. I know it isn’t that simple because Elvis and Springsteen are very different people but it would have made a big difference in Elvis’s career - and his life, IMO.
I use to think like this too, but if you research his horrific health there won't anything they could have done. Medical technology wasn't where they could have saved him. They didn't even have MRI's, Hell even the ambulances were SO PRIMATIVE. He was suffering from a Traumatic brain injury (one of several), even DR Nick noted it in his charts. They didn't realize what exactly happens to people with major brain injuries like that. That in turn caused an Autoimmune disease to start attacking all his major organs. Lead to his heart being twice the size, Liver & Kidney problems, hepatitis, his A1 deficiency from birth, then add in his chronic pain, his poly pharmacy, and the accidental Codine he took that night. Too many things at once for sure. His depression, self medicating, melancholy, mood swings were all exhastrubated by his Brain Injury in 1967. Dr Nick said he was never the same afterwards.
Maybe you should read " Destined to die young". Elvis had MAJOR health problems from birth. There is WAY more to that story. His mom, Grandma Doll & 6 of his 8 uncles all died in their 40's. He took perscriptions to deal with his Genetic health problems, his enlarged paralyzed colon, Glaucoma, Antitrypsin Deficiency, a condition which can result in lung and/or liver disease both of which he had severely at the time of his death. Elvis was never a smoker or drinker. He had Together with the immune system disorder, hypogammaglobulinemia, which plagued Elvis all his life and caused him to constantly fight various infections. His “inherited” weak heart, reactive arthritis, and the impact of his nocturnal lifestyle, resulting in a lack of vitamin D, the effects of which contributed to respiratory infections, reduced immune function, and inflammation. Of the 11 bodily systems that operate to keep us alive and hopefully healthy. Critically, Elvis suffered disease or disorder in nine of them! And five were present from birth and pre his fame. His heart (circulatory system), his lungs (respiratory system), and his bowels (digestive/excretory systems) required medication. Insomnia affected his nervous system……His immune system was compromised. His urinary system was not functioning properly. At one point there was even talk of dialysis. Often he is dismissed as just another rock ‘n’ roll drug addict. He wasn't taking street drugs. He was taking perscriptions not to "ESCAPE" h was taking them to try to maintain some sense of normalcy as himself in a time where the medical field was limited. No DNA, Genetics, No MRI's, little known about the addiction, his dystrophy & No understanding of Vitamin D even. Looking at the illnesses and disorders, that mounted upon each other over the decades, it’s no coincidence that Elvis’ prescription drug use increased as his health declined. From ear infections to chronic tonsilitis to recurrent flus to eye infections and glaucoma…..these arguably insignificant ailments independently, grew into something more. As his body broke down, alongside multiple immune system disorders and genetic complications, prescription medication and his handy PDR tried to fill the gaps. When that no longer worked, hospital stays became the norm and his list of ailments grew. The sicker he got, the more prescriptions he was prescribed. He was seeing a cardiologist before he bought Graceland. He was 20yrs old. They have gone through Elvis's entire life of medical records & now have an entire different story now. This is all the facts Geraldo & 20/20 never stated.

It is now recognized that multiple head trauma can cause an autoimmune inflammatory disorder that can attack any organ in the body. Contemporary terms for the pathologic developments that may occur following head trauma are post-concussion syndrome, TBI, and chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Some of the post-trauma symptoms include memory loss, obsessive-compulsive traits, and irrational or illogical behavior.Elvis demonstrated many of these obsessive-compulsive and erratic behaviors at different times.A retrospective analysis of Elvis' head trauma clearly shows that Presley developed or accelerated his autoimmune inflammatory disease after his most serious head trauma in 1967. His previous bouts of head trauma probably contributed to his deterioration, as multiple head traumas are cumulative in effect. Autoimmunity following TBI has historically been believed to occur as a result of hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction. A new belief is that head trauma causes brain tissue to be jarred loose, and leak into the general circulation through the blood-brain barrier.²² Brain tissue is not supposed to enter the blood circulation because it is toxic or antigenic to the rest of the body. If this truly occurs, and this author believes it does, it acts like an infectious agent or vaccine in that it causes antibodies to form. These antibodies then become "auto" and start attacking normal tissue. I`ve seen a lot of interviews from people like John Lennon, Keith Richards and other great musicians that where influenced by Elvis. One of the things they had in common was that they heard him on the radio first and was like: "Wow! What was that!?".

You're right. Robert Plant said that. I said that, and I was born in '65. I remember being in first grade, so, in the early '70s. I was watching TV, and a commercial came on for one of those K-Tel style records. It was a compilation album being advertised on TV. And the commercial opened up with a photo of Elvis, and the opening notes to Hound Dog. And here I am, a little first grader, in the '70s, not the '50s, and I'm hearing for the first time this song from the '50s, and I remember this so well --- I sat up straight like a rocket, my eyes went wide, and I turned to my mother and exclaimed, "Who is THAT?!!!".

When I was in my 20s my dad and I took a road trip to Graceland. This was the early '90s. I was in a long line to get to the graves. And when I got to Elvis' grave I had this sense that something was happening. I didn't know what it was. But I remember it was the feeling like someone famous had pulled up -- -it was weird. I couldn't place my finger on just what it was. And it gradually dawned on me that my chest was heaving and I was crying. It was crazy. It was totally beyond my conscious control and awareness --- it was just my body reacting separate from my mind.

It is so sad what happens to a human being when they have no dreams left to live into...it is soul shattering & that took his life.

I’m 61 and have been an Elvis since age 6 or so. I really do not understand the comparisons of Elvis and Michael Jackson. They were very different musically, appealed to very different audiences and at very different points in popular music. Talking about who was better or any comparisons are irrelevant and really don’t matter a rat’s ass - in my humble opinion.

In August last year, I went to Memphis for my 4th time and did the candlelit vigil which has taken place on every anniversary of Elvis' death. The 40th anniversary was the biggest turn out. 70,000+ passed by his grave.

At 61, I like a lot of artists but since age 6, it has been ELVIS and then Springsteen at 19. The King and The Boss. Here Springsteen states Elvis impact which primarily took place in the 1950s. As a musical artist, Elvis could have continued to be influential and one important thing that could have made that happen was dumping The Colonel and hiring a manger who was supportive of Elvis as an artist. Bruce knew when he had to break it off with Mike Appel and eventually went with Landau. I know it isn’t that simple because Elvis and Springsteen are very different people but it would have made a big difference in Elvis’s career - and his life, IMO.
I use to think like this too, but if you research his horrific health there won't anything they could have done. Medical technology wasn't where they could have saved him. They didn't even have MRI's, Hell even the ambulances were SO PRIMATIVE. He was suffering from a Traumatic brain injury (one of several), even DR Nick noted it in his charts. They didn't realize what exactly happens to people with major brain injuries like that. That in turn caused an Autoimmune disease to start attacking all his major organs. Lead to his heart being twice the size, Liver & Kidney problems, hepatitis, his A1 deficiency from birth, then add in his chronic pain, his poly pharmacy, and the accidental Codine he took that night. Too many things at once for sure. His depression, self medicating, melancholy, mood swings were all exhastrubated by his Brain Injury in 1967. Dr Nick said he was never the same afterwards.
Maybe you should read " Destined to die young". Elvis had MAJOR health problems from birth. There is WAY more to that story. His mom, Grandma Doll & 6 of his 8 uncles all died in their 40's. He took perscriptions to deal with his Genetic health problems, his enlarged paralyzed colon, Glaucoma, Antitrypsin Deficiency, a condition which can result in lung and/or liver disease both of which he had severely at the time of his death. Elvis was never a smoker or drinker. He had Together with the immune system disorder, hypogammaglobulinemia, which plagued Elvis all his life and caused him to constantly fight various infections. His “inherited” weak heart, reactive arthritis, and the impact of his nocturnal lifestyle, resulting in a lack of vitamin D, the effects of which contributed to respiratory infections, reduced immune function, and inflammation.
Of the 11 bodily systems that operate to keep us alive and hopefully healthy. Critically, Elvis suffered disease or disorder in nine of them! And five were present from birth and pre his fame. His heart (circulatory system), his lungs (respiratory system), and his bowels (digestive/excretory systems) required medication. Insomnia affected his nervous system……His immune system was compromised. His urinary system was not functioning properly. At one point there was even talk of dialysis.
Often he is dismissed as just another rock ‘n’ roll drug addict. He wasn't taking street drugs. He was taking perscriptions not to "ESCAPE" h was taking them to try to maintain some sense of normalcy as himself in a time where the medical field was limited. No DNA, Genetics, No MRI's, little known about the addiction, his dystrophy & No understanding of Vitamin D even.
Looking at the illnesses and disorders, that mounted upon each other over the decades, it’s no coincidence that Elvis’ prescription drug use increased as his health declined. From ear infections to chronic tonsilitis to recurrent flus to eye infections and glaucoma…..these arguably insignificant ailments independently, grew into something more. As his body broke down, alongside multiple immune system disorders and genetic complications, prescription medication and his handy PDR tried to fill the gaps. When that no longer worked, hospital stays became the norm and his list of ailments grew.
The sicker he got, the more prescriptions he was prescribed. He was seeing a cardiologist before he bought Graceland. He was 20yrs old. They have gone through Elvis's entire life of medical records & now have an entire different story now. This is all the facts Geraldo & 20/20 never stated.
Elvis quit performing as much because of his MAJOR HEALTH problems. He suffered a Traumatic brain injury (a series of 4 in his lifetime actually). The last one being in 1967. He tripped over a TV cord and hit his head on a porcelain tub and knocked him out for over 6hrs!!! He even seen his Mom talking to him!!! DR Nick was called in immediately and this was before MRI'S!! The most underappreciated factor in the decline of Elvis Presley's health and early death was repeated head trauma. It is now recognized that multiple head trauma can cause an autoimmune inflammatory disorder that can attack any organ in the body. Contemporary terms for the pathologic developments that may occur following head trauma are post-concussion syndrome, TBI, and chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Some of the post-trauma symptoms include memory loss, obsessive-compulsive traits, and irrational or illogical behavior.Elvis demonstrated many of these obsessive-compulsive and erratic behaviors at different times.A retrospective analysis of Elvis' head trauma clearly shows that Presley developed or accelerated his autoimmune inflammatory disease after his most serious head trauma in 1967. His previous bouts of head trauma probably contributed to his deterioration, as multiple head traumas are cumulative in effect. Autoimmunity following TBI has historically been believed to occur as a result of hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction. A new belief is that head trauma causes brain tissue to be jarred loose, and leak into the general circulation through the blood-brain barrier.²² Brain tissue is not supposed to enter the blood circulation because it is toxic or antigenic to the rest of the body. If this truly occurs, and this author believes it does, it acts like an infectious agent or vaccine in that it causes antibodies to form. These antibodies then become "auto" and start attacking normal tissue. It's even possible these abnormal antibodies attack and further damage the brain.Elvis clearly had a disease process that had affected multiple organs-stomach, liver, spine, and eyes-but at the time, his physicians had no idea that he might have had a progressive autoimmune inflammatory disorder. The concept of autoimmunity was just starting to be understood. Much to his credit, Dr. Nick gave Elvis the diagnosis of post-concussion syndrome, and believed his headaches were a result of his head injury of 1967. Dr. Nick related to me that, "Elvis was never the same after he hit his head in 1967."Dr. Nick prescribed only two of the many drugs found in his serum. What no one knew at the time was that some drugs, particularly opioids, may interfere with cardiac conduction and cause a fatal, sudden heart stoppage from cardiac arrhythmia. The most notorious example is torsades de pointes, a prolongation of the QT interval, which may occur when opioids and other drugs are taken together. This toxic reaction will most likely occur in a patient with existing heart disease. I now believe that Elvis' death was partially due to codeine, because he had obtained codeine from a dentist the day before his death. He took several tablets and had a serum level 10 times the therapeutic range.Just a few weeks before his death, Elvis became ill while touring in Louisiana. He developed nausea and symptoms of intestinal flu. He also had pulled a hamstring and strained his back. He entered Baptist Memorial Hospital for the fourth and last time on April 1, 1977.
