Before his first movie the Colonel had a figure of Elvis about 70Ft. tall erected above the theatre where Love Me Tender was going to debut in NY. This collection of interviews in parts 1 and 2 is a reminder of just how SHOCKING it was just to glimpse or be in the presence of Elvis Presley. Many people today are unaware of how jaw-dropping his charisma, looks, and presence were - and that's aside from performing!! The guy was something else, and I can't think of any other modern day individual who had that effect on another human being. Truly one of a kind.

I not only got to meet Elvis but I was his side man in the movie "Double Trouble" I played a member of his band mainly on lead guitar but also on various other instruments. It was great fun indeed and Elvis was very kind and great to work with. I am on the cover of the DVD with him along with our drummer. I am on the white Fender Strat and on the right as you look at the DVD and our drummer is on the left. Or the blond guy is the drummer and the guy with black hair is me. The band broke up after the movie and I have been a professional photographer ever since then. I have no idea about the other members of the group we have never kept in touch. We went be the name of the Fifth Amendment prior to doing the movie but decided to call ourselves the G-Men as that was our name in the film...you can see how well that all worked out. The one thing I will say regarding Elvis is that you could see the amount of pressure he was under every day...I would not have wanted to exchange places with him as we all can see what ended up happening to Elvis...very sad ending to a brilliant career that burned out all to soon.

No, Little Richard (and I'll add Chuck Berry) do not deserve the title King of R&R. First, it's not the artist who picks that title, it's the public who decides. Elvis never liked the title, stating that only Jesus was the king. In the case of Michael Jackson (king of pop) it was not the public, but his publicist who demanded the media & public relations always include the title with his name in advertisements. Michael was an excellent showman, but I would not say he was remotely versatile for singing all art forms in the manner Elvis did. Elvis went from being a rocker, to a movie-musical (not always great movies), to country, to a major balladeer on the level of opera singers. He simply did it all. This fact is acknowledged by black performers as well. When Elvis did R&B, most times it was not a Cut & Paste job, rather it changed from being ethnic R&B black music and turned into rock. I feel Rock & Roll is not always synonymous with R&B, it had a country white influence mixed, which is much underrated and seldom discussed. I have (and love) both versions of many R&B and White cover songs, and I do see a difference. So just as Elvis "owned" the song, My Way from Frank Sinatra, he did the same with this song from Jimmy Reed (Baby What you Want me to do). Elvis did it better than the original artists for almost every song he covered, be they black or white. Back to Elvis' contemporaries (chuck berry, little Richard, Jerry Lee), I like the few big songs they had, but truthfully I think the lack of their contributions would not have altered music drastically, and their chart success was dismal beyond those few hits. This is even after music was desegregated when they had decades to release songs, but they didn't go anywhere. They never rose artistically to the level of Elvis. Elvis was the most versatile performer, able to sing all music forms.

I remember back in the 70s and 80s they were almost forgotten, nobody was talking much about them let alone listening to the music. Only these days do they come up when this generation are trying to diss Elvis. They are overrated. I was ten years old. Never heard of Elvis My mother took me to the movies to see Love me tender. I loved the movie however at the end Elvis sang..LOVE ME TENDER me at 10 totally lost it. I see it in some of today’s stars too but when you look at tapes and interviews how much pressure he’s under and how everything was in the public eye. It’s unfortunate because at the end of the day they’re just people, human beings, with worries and fears. People that get tired and need a break, that need a support system. I not only got to meet Elvis but I was his side man in the movie "Double Trouble" I played a member of his band mainly on lead guitar but also on various other instruments. It was great fun indeed and Elvis was very kind and great to work with. I am on the cover of the DVD with him along with our drummer. I am on the white Fender Strat and on the right as you look at the DVD and our drummer is on the left. Or the blond guy is the drummer and the guy with black hair is me. The band broke up after the movie and I have been a professional photographer ever since then. I have no idea about the other members of the group we have never kept in touch. We went be the name of the Fifth Amendment prior to doing the movie but decided to call ourselves the G-Men as that was our name in the film...you can see how well that all worked out. The one thing I will say regarding Elvis is that you could see the amount of pressure he was under every day...I would not have wanted to exchange places with him as we all can see what ended up happening to Elvis...very sad ending to a brilliant career that burned out all to soon.

No, Little Richard (and I'll add Chuck Berry) do not deserve the title King of R&R. First, it's not the artist who picks that title, it's the public who decides. Elvis never liked the title, stating that only Jesus was the king. In the case of Michael Jackson (king of pop) it was not the public, but his publicist who demanded the media & public relations always include the title with his name in advertisements. Michael was an excellent showman, but I would not say he was remotely versatile for singing all art forms in the manner Elvis did. Elvis went from being a rocker, to a movie-musical (not always great movies), to country, to a major balladeer on the level of opera singers. He simply did it all. This fact is acknowledged by black performers as well.
When Elvis did R&B, most times it was not a Cut & Paste job, rather it changed from being ethnic R&B black music and turned into rock. I feel Rock & Roll is not always synonymous with R&B, it had a country white influence mixed, which is much underrated and seldom discussed. I have (and love) both versions of many R&B and White cover songs, and I do see a difference. So just as Elvis "owned" the song, My Way from Frank Sinatra, he did the same with this song from Jimmy Reed (Baby What you Want me to do). Elvis did it better than the original artists for almost every song he covered, be they black or white.
Back to Elvis' contemporaries (chuck berry, little Richard, Jerry Lee), I like the few big songs they had, but truthfully I think the lack of their contributions would not have altered music drastically, and their chart success was dismal beyond those few hits. This is even after music was desegregated when they had decades to release songs, but they didn't go anywhere. They never rose artistically to the level of Elvis. Elvis was the most versatile performer, able to sing all music forms.
You just told the truth. Little Richard and Chuck as good as they were where very limited. I remember back in the 70s and 80s they were almost forgotten, nobody was talking much about them let alone listening to the music. Only these days do they come up when this generation are trying to diss Elvis. They are overrated. Elvis performed and sang in his own style, a fusion of rhythm and blues, gospel AND country, people seem to forget that. Soon after Elvis evolved hugley, way beyond rock n roll and left them all behind. He was unique and immensely talented in so many different areas.

Even Stoller who (with Lieber) wrote some of his most famous songs once said Elvis became a parody of himself. And, by the way, Stoller also said that the Beatles were second to none in every department.

I see it in some of today’s stars too but when you look at tapes and interviews how much pressure he’s under and how everything was in the public eye. It’s unfortunate because at the end of the day they’re just people, human beings, with worries and fears. People that get tired and need a break, that need a support system. People that mistrust and cry and need personal space.
