I don't think it is because of the wrap. They "improved" the recipe.😭 Much less nuts, more fat and sugar*. I used to love them, now I don't touch them anymore. *that goes for most Ferrero products
I hate it when companies do that they change how something is made by very little and then also change the wrapping and think we won’t noticed but we do and it’s bad ❤
for the salami (and similar sausages) the white is supposed to be mold but for most of them it's just cornstarch or flour to make it look like mold as the real process is time consuming and expensive.
Adding another fact to this one. Mold is just a type of fungi as yeast is too. Not only the common fungi can be between eatables and deadly but so can the little ones.
Yes! Traditionally the white powdery stuff is a mold, and it’s a natural part of the fermentation process for artisanal salami. Don’t worry though, it is a penicillin-based mold similar to the white mold you will find on a fine cheese like a French Brie or Camembert. The fermentation process naturally kills any harmful bacteria and the mold will bloom and start to form a luscious white coat on the salami's exterior. After fermentation the mold will continue to bloom through the drying process, and it actually has a vital job. The mold protects the salami from any harmful bacteria getting inside the product, in its final stages. It serves an essential purpose, while also giving the salami a unique flavour and flora, similar to a fine wine! This process takes up too much time, money and resources for company’s trying to make a profit in a commercial setting because they are only focused on turn over of product or profit. Cornstarch, Flour or a Microcrystalline powder is typically used commercially.

maoam, küsschen, nimm2, duplo, and the ones where the publicity was "merci, dass es dich gibt" are the snacks I remember from being in germany as a child
I was born and raised in Germany, am Vietnamese but also moved to London 7+ years ago. Whenever I come back to Germany, I have to fill my suitcase with snacks to bring back to the UK. Landjaeger, Knusper Puffreis, Hanuta and Knoppers are my absolute favourite! Alsoo btw. the Manner Waffel come in a bag and LEMON flavour! Those are my Vietnamese parent's favourite. I am sure you'd love those!
Can I ask if you've had the UK sweet 'Rainbow Drops'? Are these the same as the Knusper Puffries? They just look very similar is all, so I'd love to know if it's just been rebranded in either country.
Yeah. Those are often given to children because they are inexpensive, easy to store, mild in flavor and can entertain a child for a while. I get the feeling Uyen just wants to be punched in the face by something in a snack. Else I cannot explain her fascination with the artificially flavored puffed rice. Because being very different is probably the only good thing to be said about it.
Jeh i wondered about the puff rice facination of her as well even as a child i was disguistet by those lil balls and would have perfered animal cookies or russisch brot over that a 100 times 😅
I'm American & my partner is German; we live in Bavaria. The 1st time my family came to visit Germany, my partner's parents held a little grill-out for us all. Mom asked me how one compliments good cooking in German. After I told her the phrase & we practiced it a few times, she confidently got my partner's dad's attention, pointed to the grilled chicken, & said, "Ludwig, das kann man essen!" She was completely clueless as to why everyone laughed so hard, or why Ludwig was so pleased. XD
I agree they're pretty basic, but also everytime my grandma or aunt put them out, I eat a whole bowl in record time without even noticing 😅 Gotta defend the mini pretzels as our family staple
Spend a while in the UK with its horrid semi-Americanized snacks and you'll learn to appreciate them. I should know, lost my shit when I finally saw them again at Aldi.
She probably loves the lye taste, just like me. I also find the flavour intense, especially after you have eaten several of them the aroma intensifies in the mouth 🤤 ❤ 😏 🥨🥨🥨
OH YES!! But she might find them too oily - but heck, they are addictive! Flavorful, bite-sized, very crunchy, good amount of salt, condiments and decent level of spices (but not spicy at all)! Great catch!! Nearly forgot about those 😋

I love that you liked the least expensive and "plainest" snacks the most 😂 And I was somewhat surprised you didnt like the Leibnitz Zoo Cookies, I always get asked to send some to my friends abroad! They are somewhat simple, but butter cookies are very good to eat with tea, hot cocoa, coffee ...
Our "zoo cookies" (animal crackers) are shaped like bears, tigers, gorillas, etc. We always took them when visiting the zoo when the kids were little and we'd all try to find and eat the corresponding animal to the exhibit we were seeing. 😂
Yes, I think she was missing out on the childhood experiences of playing with your food-animals and dunking things in hot coffee milk (10% coffee, 90% sweet hot milk, ratio depending on age) made for you by your grandmother on winter afternoons after school.
Knoppers are the best. Really so tasty. Curious about the next video with Haribo and maybe also Ritter Sport, Kinder or toffifee (yes I love chocolate :) )
Ritter Sport was the only chocolate other than Hersheys (and Hersheys is foul...) I could get where I lived in Thailand for a few years, so it has a soft spot in my heart. I'm not German, but I love the stuff.
I love knoppers myselfe and when I came t Ireland I er 20 years ago it was only available in east European food shops. Over the last view years it’s been available in Main Street super markets and is now even permanently in Aldi. Last year one of the local radio presenters must have tried them for the first time and was raving about them telling everybody to try them😂.
As a Dutch, I love Pombears and the peanut snacks. Also from my youth... I had the same reaction as your bf, you love pretzels more than pombears? Luckily everyone has his/her/their own taste 🙂
@@daniellebroekhuizen76 I dont like the classic pombears but ADORE ketchup flavored. Gives them a bit more taste. Also now that Im attending university Pretzerls are way more affordable than chips or pombear, and also keep your hands cleaner if u r writing an essay!
@@leticiafire9385 That is a very good point, the hands gets so dirty from chips, especially pombears and peanut chips. I never tasted the ketchup flavored ones. I will look if the supermarket has them.
You forgot at least Kinder Schoko-Bons, Schlümpfe, saure Apfel/Pfirsichringe, Pocket Coffee, Pringles, Milchschnitte and Lakritzschnecken. Looking forward to #2 ;)

German Boyfriend, I support you and your childhood snacks❣️ Some snacks are made to have along side of beverages. For example, the Zoo cookies flavor would come out more with a hot beverage, especially (dare I say it ) when dunked (dipped). It melts the butter, and soaks up the beverage.
They’re so relatable. I love how they’re taking the leftovers into work for German boyfriend’s colleagues to finish. Those of us who grew up being told to never waste food let out a huge sigh of relief! Never wasting food is deep in my DNA now 😂
@@MS-sd1uz I am vegan now ( 10 years + already so no longer eat this junk. I did not say I ate these all the time when i was a child. It was a treat as we weren't allowed to eat and buy too many sweets in our asian household.
@@MS-sd1uz It's not that deep.. I grew up with these snacks too, but it was not like we were eating them everyday. They were more like a treat, that's probably why everyone remembers them, because they remind them of celebrations/special occasions.
That. Special occasion treats. I think I only ever had the puffed rice when visiting relatives, for example. Grandmas had special storage compartments where they kept treats like this for their grandchildren's visits, and they might only hand them out as we were leaving again as travel treats. 😊
"Leibniz ... it is also a place."

Oh, I just love Erdnuss-Locken. They are addictive. If I eat one, I have to empty the bag. That’s why I don’t buy them anymore. But I think it’s one of the foods you have to grow up with in order to like it.
Hi Uyen! I hope you see this, and hope you know how much we love your videos videos and taking the time it takes to get them on your YT and TikTok pages (even tho we may be strangers)! I love to see you and German Boyfriend in my feed and seeing these types of videos is always fun! Sending love from NYC ❤
Haha, I remember when Knoppers came to Poland, and in commercials they would tell you to eat it every day at 9:30, and people were like "But why?" So at school, we were eating those every time, but never at 9:30 XD
Because it was "Knoppers, das Frühstückchen" (Knoppers, the little breakfast). Promotion suggested it is a small "great" meal for everybody. If I remember correctly they made advertising spots with school kids(students), construction builder aso. Maybe there are commercial uploaded. Edit: Yeah found German ones: Knopper halb 10 Spot 1995 ...😂
"... they would tell you to eat it every day at 9:30, and people were like "But why?"..." Because most Germans who work in one of the trades take a morning break around that time. So, I guess the ads were aimed at adult males? Or at least make moms think that if the local electrician has this for a snack, it must be healthy. Not sure, though, that Knoppers taste all that good with beer :P
Hi from the U.S.! I saw Knoppers at Aldi this week and recognized them from this video. So I bought and tried them and they really ARE snacktopia. I also saw the weird peanut puff thing and did not purchase that. I may try it at a later date. Your videos make me want to try everything I can get my hands on at Aldi lol.
3:32 we also have this flavoured puffed rice in the UK. Theyre called Rainbow Drops. They dont have as strong a flavour, theyre sweet with a very faint fruity flavour. Theyre still pretty good and fun to eat. :)
If you are in the US, Knoppers can sometimes be found on the Walmart website for a really good price. I love Knoppers so much that I only allow myself to buy them once a year or I would eat way too many.
7:07 I had Knoppers for the first time today and had the same reaction! At the grocery store I was like, “Why only sell them in packs of 8?!”… Well, I get it now.
Sometimes there are big packs. I think they show up around Christmas and Easter. Not a good idea to buy those though, you'll just inhale them in one day.
@@4203105The big packs are sold the whole year, at least where I live. The singles are exclusively at the register. Every once in a while you get 8+2 instead of 8.
If it's sweet I won't like it. I prefer peanut flavour snacks to still retain the peanut flavour not with added sweetness. But if there is no other peanut snack in the house, I'd eat it like a boss. 😅
Just opened RUclips and saw this and audibly gasped with excitement and clicked so fast!!!!! Thanks Uyen and German Boyfriend for the quality entertainment while I do laundry! I also happen to LOVE snack reviews! Sending love and wishes for an abundant 2024❣️✨✨
I love Erndussflips mixed with some of the dried Salamisticks. These (the sausages) are also popular to bring on Wanderungen (with Salzstangen oder Minibrezeln). But: aside of Hanuta and Knoppers there were not much chocolaty things, such as Geleebananen, Minzdrops, Lufflee-Schokolade or Waffelröllchen oder -waffeln. But your sincere reaction were so cute and you are brave to try all of the food, you have no clue about! Love your videos!
As a Vietnamese raised in Germany I can't believe that I know all those snacks !! Also I really like all of them ! German bf got a good sense of taste 👍🏼
To me its kinda funny that Uyen is the most hype about the most basic snacks, Salzstangen and Mini Brezel are her favourite :D As well as Knoppers but everyone knows Knoppers is a top tier snack for a reason!
Over half of these are available in the US, mostly from Aldi. The animal cookies that Aldi imports to the US have a light lemon flavor. It's similar to the old "McDonaldland" cookies McDonald's used to sell before Ronald went into semi-retirement 15-20 years ago. I personally love them. (And not just because I have fond childhood memories of eating the giraffe's legs first so he could go "swimming" on the table.)
You should make a GDR- / DDR-Version of this (maybe German BF reads this?) 😁 What you should / can use for that: - Halloren Kugeln (available in many different flavors - from fruits to beer 🍺) - bambina (chocolate with cream) - Schlager-Süß (chocolate with peanuts) - Russisch Brot from Dr. Quendt (Dresden) - Zentis Knusperflocken (sooooo good!) - Othello Keks (they also make Butterkekse but they're not super special) - something out of Nougat from Viba (personally I hate Nougat - my mom loves it!) - also: try out Nudossi instead of Nutella 😄 - and if you wanna go really wild: try out some sausages with the best mustard ever!!! - Bautz'ner Senf 😎
I'm British and we have Pom Bears here, too! They were definitely part of my childhood, but my younger sister ate them way more than I did. Also the colourful puffed rice stuff was common at school discos and birthday parties, but I never ate it much because I didn't like the texture/taste combo. I spent my money at the school discos getting pickled onion Aliens and those wearable candy necklaces that I didn't like (not interesting taste, once you started eating them you got covered in sticky sugary spit) but everyone got them so I had to get one too.

1:58 - That white mold on the outside of salami is actually safe and prevents worse stuff from taking hold during the curing process, if I remember correctly. 7:52 - Oh, I've seen something like those Nik Nak peanuts. I'm lucky enough to live in an area with a lot of Filipino people, and there's a snack imported from there under the brand "Boy Bawang" that's basically the same. I think they come in adobo flavour and probably some others. They're fun. I don't go out of my way for them, and I prefer their crunchy corn snacks with garlic chips. 13:20 - I love barbeque flavour stuff. I think the idea is -- at least for _American_ BBQ items -- that it's tomato, onion, paprika, vinegar, smoke, and a couple other flavours.
That first one we have in the Netherlands as well, and it’s one of my favorite snacks 😁 but I’ll admit a lot of my friends and family hate it, it’s an acquired taste. We have a cheese-flavored one that most people do enjoy though (not me, peanut all the way!)
I can't believe you liked the Knusperreis, I was so ready for you to frown and call it disgusting haha. This is a snack they would often throw with other candy during the Karneval procession (I come from the Rhein/Ruhrgebiet where Karneval is super important and every little town has its own procession). The kinds of candy you get tend to all be artificially flavored, super processed stuff that I'd have thought mostly appeals to children. The Knusperreis is basically just artificial "fruit" flavouring that disappears immediately and the snack has no substance and dissolves immediately. Definitely would be on my "only during apocalypse" list nowadays! Good selection of snacks btw, lots of German classics. Was hoping for Ferrero Rocher, perhaps some time in the future?
When my area got an Aldi’s I was finally introduced to the joy of Knoppers and it’s been a treat I get at any holiday where it’s traditional to get candy
Rewe has skinny, dried sausages that are either "extrem scharf" or "sehr scharf" or something. Can't remember the exact name, but i think the brand is something like "wilhelm brandenburg" or something. They are not as hot as eating dried bords eye chillies, but certainly hotter than the usual "german hotness".
Also just to to clear something up, those Stickado aren't hot at all, even to my sensitive German mouth. Not sure what those two out of three chilli peppers are supposed to represent, but it can't be a hotness scale.

This is honestly so relatable 😂 I spent four years in Slovenia and made a few videos about it. One of them, I tried SUPER hard to make a video just like this but ended up scrapping it because, while I understood that context is important for snacks (and I was trying vintage-themed Balkan/Slavic snacks too).... I just didn't really like any of them. 😅 But my partner at the time, who grew up on them, also didn't like them as an adult for the most part. haha. Thanks for pushing through!

Knoppers and Russisch Brot have so much childhood nostalgia for me! I know one of my best friends since primary school (so about 15-ish years now) and her mother was a single mum and didn't have much money. She (the mother) also grew up in Russia, so every time my friend would come over to play, her mum would pack her some Russisch Brot and Knoppers for us both to snack on. She also always tried to pay my parents if her daughter was staying for dinner or over night. Ofc my parents never accepted being paid, but I guess my friend's mum found a workaround by packing even more Knoppers and Russisch Brot (and other snacks)😂. Now we're in our early 20s and when we meet up from time to time, one of us brings some Russisch Brot or Knoppers sometimes. Or even when it's my friend's birthday and she isn't answering the door when I randomly drop by, I'll just leave some Knoppers at her doorstep☺️. These snacks formed some great memories and I'll forever love them🥰

for the salami (and similar sausages) the white is supposed to be mold but for most of them it's just cornstarch or flour to make it look like mold as the real process is time consuming and expensive.
Adding another fact to this one. Mold is just a type of fungi as yeast is too. Not only the common fungi can be between eatables and deadly but so can the little ones.
That makes sense!

@@MrHodoAstartes what do you expect? Germans came up with the kinder suprise egg.
XD
Nice story
Grandios!
Omg "It's...mold..." made laugh so hard!
Well, but it is.
Me too! The way he said it was just funny. “Its…🥹🥲 mold😅”
It's only real mold if it's an expensive, high quality one. On the cheaper ones they fake it.

Yes! I find them so bland! I'm surprised she considered it a "flavour explosion" 😅

I also find the flavour intense, especially after you have eaten several of them the aroma intensifies in the mouth 🤤

You should definitely try "Brotchips" with garlic or Mediterranean flavour. And maybe the typical "Knabberbox"?

I love that you liked the least expensive and "plainest" snacks the most 😂 And I was somewhat surprised you didnt like the Leibnitz Zoo Cookies, I always get asked to send some to my friends abroad! They are somewhat simple, but butter cookies are very good to eat with tea, hot cocoa, coffee ...
Our "zoo cookies" (animal crackers) are shaped like bears, tigers, gorillas, etc. We always took them when visiting the zoo when the kids were little and we'd all try to find and eat the corresponding animal to the exhibit we were seeing. 😂
I think it's cause her taste is very 'simple' I can't get the exact word but she likes very neutral stuff I think

Knoppers are the best. Really so tasty. Curious about the next video with Haribo and maybe also Ritter Sport, Kinder or toffifee (yes I love chocolate :) )
Katzenzungen and Choco Crossies !!
I bought 3 types of knoppers bars to try.
Knoppers are my childhood. Love them.
WOOOOO Uyen said a really good version of italian word "bruschetta", but GB really nailed the pronunciation! As an Italian I'm SOOOOOO happy 🤩🤩🤩
But I kind of think she was thinking of grissini :O)
I love your longer form content! Thank you for your hard work.
I agree. Really like watching the longer videos especially with German boyfriend.
I picked up Knoppers before Christmas at Aldi in the US and I fell in love. Its going to be a long wait until Christmas time again.
I just bought them today at a Texas Aldi :)
We have them everyday in ALDI Australia & yes we love them too.
Wait until you find the Knoppers chocolate bars, they are so good!!! They come in coconut flavor too.
We have them all the time at Aldi in Kansas, too. Also, if you have access to a U.S. military base, you’re likely to find them at the Base Exchange.
As a Dutch, I love Pombears and the peanut snacks. Also from my youth... I had the same reaction as your bf, you love pretzels more than pombears?

Haha, I remember when Knoppers came to Poland, and in commercials they would tell you to eat it every day at 9:30, and people were like "But why?"
So at school, we were eating those every time, but never at 9:30 XD
School breakfast break was 9:20-9:40h?
Because it was "Knoppers, das Frühstückchen" (Knoppers, the little breakfast). Promotion suggested it is a small "great" meal for everybody. If I remember correctly they made advertising spots with school kids(students), construction builder aso. Maybe there are commercial uploaded.
Edit: Yeah found German ones: Knopper halb 10 Spot 1995 ...😂
"... they would tell you to eat it every day at 9:30, and people were like "But why?"..."
Because most Germans who work in one of the trades take a morning break around that time.

As someone from the Netherlands, I can recognize a lot of these haha. Knoppers is part of my childhood.
You should make a GDR- / DDR-Version of this (maybe German BF reads this?) 😁 What you should / can use for that:
- Halloren Kugeln (available in many different flavors - from fruits to beer 🍺)
- bambina (chocolate with cream)
- Schlager-Süß (chocolate with peanuts)
- Russisch Brot from Dr. Quendt (Dresden)
- Zentis Knusperflocken (sooooo good!)
- Othello Keks (they also make Butterkekse but they're not super special)
- something out of Nougat from Viba (personally I hate Nougat - my mom loves it!)
- also: try out Nudossi instead of Nutella 😄
- and if you wanna go really wild: try out some sausages with the best mustard ever!!! - Bautz'ner Senf 😎

Rewe also has a snack called "Feuerdrachen" that is above average in terms of hotness. Absolutely love those things.
Also just to to clear something up, those Stickado aren't hot at all, even to my sensitive German mouth. Not sure what those two out of three chilli peppers are supposed to represent, but it can't be a hotness scale.

I used to love pombear until they changed the recipe, they taste awful imo now
The Pom Bear Chips 🐻🥔 is actually original from The Netherlands 🇳🇱 “ Holland “ 🇳🇱🌷, but not from Germany 🇩🇪🦅, by the way my friends 😊😊😊😁😃😎🎉🤠😎🤜🏻🤛🏻👍🏻🤘🏻🍺🍺🍺🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
You are absolutely lovely, but I did feel a little bit sorry for your German bf. I’m Dutch and many of his childhood snacks were also my childhood favorites. Especially the Pom-Bär and the animal cookies (yes, I have the blandest palate 😂) I was very happy that you enjoyed the Knoppers though, and you were very sweet and kind about the snacks you didn’t really like. ❤
We definitely have different opinions on these snacks 😂
IDK, but the "edible mould" on the outside of the sausage sticks, may be ground calcite or gypsum, to keep the sausages from sticking to the wrapper. Ground (powderized) calcite or gypsum is used on the outside of sticks of gum and other items for this reason.
Nope, it's mold. Or supposed to be. Like on most dried, european meat products
@@pcl89 Wow! Amazing!
We've got the puffreis in the Netherlands too though with a different name, and the knoppers and pom-bär, they're some of my favourites

Yay! New video 😊
When I make a pilgrimage to the German butcher here in Connecticut, a Landjäger is always on the shopping list. Since I grew up in the US, a lot of these snacks are unfamiliar to me. 😢
This was a fun video. German boyfriend has such a soothing voice.
4:26 the face 😂😂😂 it's such a fun stuff, but I never had it... I would have for sure just popped a handful in my mouth... And you just took one or two 😂😂
Knoppers and Russisch Brot have so much childhood nostalgia for me!
