    For anybody planning to use these for automotive use, solder can crack under vehicle vibrations which will compromise your connections. It's far better to double crimp those terminals. Also, heatshrink around the leftover exposed wire will waterproof the connections. Otherwise very detailed.

    Don’t solder like this. You’ll get a terrible joint. 1. You need to heat the wire and the fitting at the same time so the solder flows through both, ensuring good penetration and a smooth join and, 2. don’t move the wire at all while the solder is cooling down or you’ll end up with a weak joint.

    You should tin the cable before inserting it into the lug

  • @GeorgeGeorge-yb2sz
    @GeorgeGeorge-yb2sz 3 месяца назад

    Anyone who has used Anderson Power Pole products in the communication industry knows that solder is not the best way to install lugs. It works most of the time, but the insulation gets burned, the wire becomes stiff and breaks easily and cold solder joints are not uncommon. Personally I would rather eat a frozen dog than solder an Anderson connector!
    I have at least four different crimp tools depending on which size you are crimping. For the larger connectors shown in the video I use a 4 crimp tool. You can pay from $35 to over $100 depending on what quality tool you need. For RV stuff, the less expensive tools are probably fine. There are ratcheting tools for the smaller sizes and they are almost a must have, solder causes a lot of problems with small conductors and greatly weakens them.
    Never use a sharp blade to cut the insulation as it leaves a groove and weakens it the conductor. Not so much on the finer strand conductors, but heavier and solid conductors are weakened by the blade groove.
    I use heat shrink tubing to seal the lug, and be sure the lugs are facing the right direction if you are using multiple conductor cable so you don't have to twist the wire to insert the lug into the connector. This can be an issue on all sizes of Anderson style plugs. I buy heavy duty slide in copper lugs instead of the open sided metal banded lugs, as they install easier and last longer.
    Also, don't put the heat shrink too far up the lug as it will interfere when you are inserting it into the connector. I use no-ox grease on the connectors when I am done to resist corrosion in the future. On semi-permanent connections that are exposed to the elements like on a boat, I put a piece of heat shrink over the wire after installing the connectors that is long enough to cover the entire plug and some of the wire on both sides. I put a lot of no-ox on the connector and shrink the heat shrink to seal the connector. You can easily cut the tubing at a later date if you need access.

      Size the cable to the amperage requirement of the trolling motor and size the correct Anderson connector to the cable. For marine or harsh environment use, there are dust/splash covers available for the Anderson connector to protect the plug side when the connectors are not joined. You can also "pot" the back of the connector, where the cables enter, with epoxy to create a water tight seal.

    I bought a dozen 50 amp ''Anderson Style'' plugs from eBay for my projects. Cheap. They have no markings at all and came from China. After assembling them, the plugs failed to lock into place. Any slight movement would disconnect the plugs. The quality control on these fake Anderson connectors is apparent. The lock springs inside the plugs are about 1-2mm too far back and they won't allow the 2 contacts to properly mesh when it's plugged in.
    Rather than send them back, I now tap those springs forward in the empty socket with a screwdriver and use a soldering iron to push the plastic into the end of the spring from the outside of the connector. The existing dimples on new plugs is how the factory secures the position of the springs. They now lock into place with a snap. I never had any trouble with genuine Anderson connectors. You get what you pay for.
    One word of caution.... these plugs are color coded. You can only mate gray with gray, yellow with yellow, red with red, etc. The housing guides are purposely made differently so they can't connect unlike colored halves.

      I’m also a true believer of you get what you pay for . I must be just lucky as I haven’t come across any faulty plugs as of yet . The original Anderson plugs work out around $3 each if you purchase in bulk lots of 100. Appreciate your comment and thanks for watching 👍🍻

    The ebay cheapies DO NOT work as well as a genuine. if you buy from Andersen Connect, you can get genuine for as cheap as $3.00 each, if you bulk buy, as little as 10 at a time. BTW, I get no endorsement/reward from them, just buy my gear there. I had to scrap all my cheapies, constant problems over a short period of time. Poor quality plastic cases that break, and the pins on some aren't located strongly, so, that when you plug in, the contacts slowly work backwards. eventually won't make contact.

    I have to connect 10 gauge wire to a 14 gauge wire using Anderson powerpole connectors.The ten gauge uses 45amp Anderson connectors.Can I crimp the 45amp Anderson contacts onto the the 14 gauge wire?(Ebike battery to controller)

      Should do as these plugs are good for 50 amps just long as your cable will carry the sufficient current you are trying to connect.

    Most demos I see using this technique the work is done on a bench. Lets see one where the Anderson needs replacing and the wires are hanging below your rig and your solo. I just did this and let me tell you, it's a trick. I used several storage boxes to get the wire plug (held with a set of vice grips) high enough to melt the solder and then shoved in the wire. I did trim the wire so there was no exposed wire. Both plugs went into the Anderson w/o difficulty but both stopped just a hair short of the end of the wire inside the Anderson. I understand when possible you want them to push through so the lip is passed the wire. Checked everything with a meter and all seems to be working.

    Don't use this method! It's dangerous! First crimp the housing when the wire is inside, then apply solder!
    Cause if the circuit somewhere will take a bigger load, the joint will heat up and solder becomes liquid, and joint will break loose...

    • @chrisgraham2904
      @chrisgraham2904 2 года назад

      An appropriate inline fuse should always prevent the fitting from heating enough to melt solder.
