Improper singing techniques. After he would sing "Exit Light" (the growling), he sings "Enter night" in a more drawn out slightly less growly sound that sounds more smooth. Signing the bad way causes blood vessels on your cords to breaks along with the actual cords themselves. James first "blew out" his voice shortly after Justice when they were on tour. The second time was somewhere around November or December of '91. You can notice it if you listen to concerts before and after. Sad to hear his voice go.
But in 91 he was already singing in a certain way, in 1991 he already sang with his technically correct voice, with singing lessons ... At 91 he was losing his voice because the Black Album tour (91-93) was very exhausting and he wasted his voice a lot. But he only sang the wrong way up to 90. I remember seeing this performance on tv when it was first shown at barely 13 years old. I was so happy at that time because Metallica were starting to get the recognition that they have always deserved. In my opinion Metallica was untouchable as a live band from 1986- 1992. James Hetfield's peak as a lead singer was from 1987- 1992 in my opinion. They are still to this day one of my all time favorite bands ever. I still enjoy going to their live shows.

I remember watchin this as a kid and this is when I became a metalhead🤘🤘🤘 This performance is what catapulted Metallica into the mainstream. By this time they'd been together a decade with multiple world tours under their belt and were in their prime. Enter Sandman has been played so much people are pretty much burnt out on it but it really is the perfect Metallica song. Written a lot like their older stuff just not as fast, heavy and much more compact.
This is arguably my favourite live performance of Sandman besides those on Live Shit. The band are on fire and this version sounds more raging than the studio version and any other live recording. I'm guessing with the newly released Black Album, the fire and fury is reflected in the performance. And James never looked more charismatic.

Saw Metallica in 92 during the Black Album Tour along with Guns and Roses, The Black Crows and Great White in Mainz Germany. Incredible experience and music. I was 23 years old and in the U.S. Army. Loving and living life to the max.
