Udham Singh was an Punjabi revolutionary belonging to the Ghadar Party, best known for his assassination in London of Michael O'Dwyer, the former lieutenant governor of the Punjab in India, on 13 March 1940. The assassination was done in revenge for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar in 1919, for which O'Dwyer was responsible.Singh was subsequently tried and convicted of murder and hanged in July 1940. Although the documentary was on the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre specifically, they didn't not mention two important points that had their origin in this incidence. 1. Bhagat Singh (he was a child at that time, 9-10 yrs old) visited the place and took the blood soaked soil from there. It was the start of his hatred for the British Empire. 2. Udham Singh eventually travelled to London and killed O'Dwyre in a public meeting. These two very important points they didn't even touch. Also, Gandhi launched the Non-cooperation campaign after Jallianwala Bagh incidence, and abruptly called it off after the Chauri Chaurah incidence, leaving lakh of students high and dry, because they had left their schools (Government Schools), burnt their books (printed by British Empire), burnt British made clothes, on Gandhi's call. This documentary and others like this always portray the good side of Gandhi. They never mention the blunders he committed. That's not fair.
The reason why he called off was because the people who committed in chauri chaura broken the golden rule of the movement, 'ahimsa'. If the violence continued the British would have every reason to declare us as terrorist and straight away shoot us. Remember the British at tht time wsnt under east company but under direct queens rule. There were still barriers for the army to shoot peaseful protestors without warning. Non-violence @ tht time without any weoponry of ourself to defend would be a straight suicide.
@kratos true... I think our history books have always potrayed gandhi as a noble and good person. So, when we say freedom fighters, gandhi comes to our minds. Just go and see history. Bose and other people did a far more better job than gandhi. I dont think independence was possible without bose. Plus i think we would hv got independence much earlier if gandhi had not intervened. Punjab and Bengal were two of the strongest storm centers for the movement for freedom in India with strong and charismatic leaders. And Bengal was the first province to come under the British rule in India. That's why they had to face the worst of all atrocities in our History.
Absolutely correct that's why most freedom fighters spoke fluent punjabi and Bengali. Prime example of the same is bhagat singh who spoke fluent bengali and is revered in Bengal with the same level of respect as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

I remember my grandmother telling me when I was very little and on her knee, how a distant relative of ours had gone to Jallianwala Bagh that day. She described how he'd bathed before going and talked about what would be for lunch when he came back and my little mind never forgot that.
Jaliyanwalabag was the event that every Indian knows and even after 100 year's we still feels the pain. I was not there but still I don't know why always it feels, like I am the one who's going through all. We are Indians after all. It was Dyer who ordered the shooting. Dwyer was the governor who praised Dyer's actions. And Udham singh killed Dwyer. Dyer unfortunately lived a comfortable life and became really wealthy

It’s in Punjab’s blood to fight against injustice till last breath and never bow down whether this injustice is by Mughals,Britishers or now by Indian Governments.
The fact that British government still haven't apologised for the massacre angers people. They don't even teach such events and British raj in their history and people take pride in British rule over India today too.

@@TheB657 there are a lot of religious and non religious organisations operating all over India on a large scale providing free lunches to poor kids in government schools and just free food for people in general. Especially in this time of the pandemic not only such organisations but the local government bodies of many states and many civilians came out to help migrant workers and homeless people with free food and free transport facilities. At the end of the day it doesn't matter how many temples or churches you join if you have no generosity of heart. I think Indians operating such societies in the west where they provide free food to people are mostly Sikhs who have joined gurudwaras or the iskon people, which is great because in India if you even have 30 rupees you can fill your stomach for the day but that's not how it is abroad and without the ngos and charity societies homeless people would starve or do something ilegal. Also comparing both countries is wrong because the social structure, history, economy, population and legal systems everything is different. So what works for the EU will not necessarily work for India and what works for people here will not work for people in Australia.
It is amazing the British Government recognises Jallianwala incident and regrets it but our Govt. took 100 yrs to coin and recognise the day. Despite all the history, India has long way to come regarding division of states, cast system, sexism, gender inequality rape, religious oppression, colour discrimination, political division, class disparities and the list goes on. Phoolan devi" bandit queen", Nirbhaya case, many states wanted to be separate countries and still do , Bangladesh and Pakistan successfully did, religious persecution, killing tribal Indians, and this is all happening under our nose. We still haven't learned much from our people's past but love the blame game. So many atrocities took place after the British. Dear Rick & korbin, I would like to bring this to your attention that there was a young guy in the massacre who survived and he avenged this by killing the British General after 21 years in Caxton Hall in London.. That freedom fighter name was Sardar Udham Singh(alias Ram Mohammed Singh Azad) which represents the spirit of united India...
I still remember after teaching about this incident my teacher said this freedom is not one day event not only about Gandhijii there are many more whom we don't know before him and with him so respect each of them and take this freedom with responsibility it's a huge bagae given by them on our shoulders so protect it and flourish it with your hardwork..

While the event is described well, it doesn't do justice to the stories I have heard first hand from people. I couldn't stop crying when I visited that place. Jalianwala Bagh is India's Auschwitz. People who jumped in the well were shot at multiple times till they died. People climbing the walls were shot at. They stopped shooting after 11 minutes only because they were out of ammo; else, by the general's own admission later, they would have continued to shoot. The Indian National Congress's UK educated elite were just a newer version (stooges) of the British raj; hence no acknowledgment of martyrdom for them.
What about the people that hindus killed in 1984 sikh genocide? Do You Know about Operation blue star when the indian government fired on golden temple with military Tankers and blew up the adjoining buildings. in response to this hateful activity two sikh bodyguards of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi assassinated her following which her son rajeev gandhi issues orders saying: "all sikhs are traitors and they need to be punished do whatever you want to do to these sikhs nobody will stop you" mob rapes sikh girls as young as 5 years old, burns their homes , kills all the sikhs in sight. sikhs who had firearms in their homes were forced to surrender their weapons to the police assuring them that their families will be protected but the police gave their address to the mob. and when mob killed and raped them there was no police to protect them. this sikh genocide continued for 3 days straight with thousands of sikhs dead and sikh girls missing. even today the victims of 1984 sikh genocide haven't gotten justice. the indian government forced a sikh PM to apologise to the sikh public for the 1984 sikh genocide when it should be the gandhi family to apologise as it was their father who was responsible not an innocent sikh who too suffered in this genocide. to this date any book, movie or song about 1984 sikh genocide is banned in india. if you sue indian government for sikh genocide you're either dead or declared a terrorist & banned from ever setting foot on indian soil. take the Canada's MP & NDP Political Party's Leader 'Jagmeet Singh'. he's a runner up for the next Prime minister elections in Canada but he's banned from entering the india. just because he sued the indian government in Canadian court and regularly criticizes them for sikh genocide. @@_manpreet_ You have to also consider the fact that Operation Blue Star was done because of the possible terrorist activities (Khalistan). While the incidence was tragic (and it hits a little harder because i am a Sikh as well), the intentions weren't evil. To be fair there were a group of terrorists hiding in a holy place. I think we should also realise that Indira Gandhi was told to remove Sikhs from her team and yet she kept her bodyguards. I know this isn't much but this kind of shows that she wasn't prejudiced against a religion, instead she was betrayed by the ones who were supposed to protect her. The genocide that happened later was ofcourse horrible and has no justification. Everyone was angry and the way they dealt with the situation was wrong. But there's only so much a person can apologize, especially when the culprits are all dead. The Gandhi family has apologised a lot of times and at some point we all need to learn to forgive. India got independence because of ww2 combined with increasing influence of INA, not because of any non cooperation movement or some yatra that actualy played along with the British plan ..
I was small when this chapter came in our history book and I still remember the trauma I got. Many months I used to think why would they do that. Once I grew up I understood the whole concept about British rule

Rudyard Kipling actually supported General Dyer and even contributed in the fund raised to support him. He even called him 'The man who saved India'. Such is the legacy of the Raj. Kipling anyway had little empathy with what went down at Jallianwala Bagh if you know about what he had written in 'The White Man's Burden'. Funnily enough, people only remember him for The Jungle Book.
Here's the rub...The Punjabi community...I feel (I'm a Bengali) is the most peace loving community in India. Most helpful...going out of there way to make the country better and this community has been at the recieving end of most brutal crimes and atrocities. 16:30 So, in 1940s it did happen that the police officers and army men (of Indian origin) broke rank and refused orders to attack crowds, and it happened very frequently. Why this didn't happen earlier is a puzzle. One of the reasons could be that in 1940s India had its on independent army unit (Bose's INA), and the existence of INA maybe gave the confidence to other police officers that they too could rebel.
I still remember when we wer taught this in our 7th std i started crying in between of the class and even now while watching this video i srted crying... its really not done, wtvr happened was wrong.. i am not angry or have any grudge against anyone but i am hurt and sad even though i was born 2 generations after independence....
Difficult to sit through any viewing or retelling of this terrible, heartbreaking tragedy (totally unnecessary bloodshed) that makes you teary eyed every single time. I remember the dread students would have the day this incident was taught by the teachers and sadly that's going to be the case in the future as well. I remember our teachers and elders saying that most of the soldiers involved in the shooting did not want to or hesitated at first (could be because nothing was going on n they saw that the men were there with their wives, children and parents). So the person in charge told them that if you don't, your family members will be shot instead. Whether they are proclaimed martyrs or not, in the eyes of the Indian public they are martyrs and always will be. They like other people who died for their country (here it is more sad because there was no plan or agenda - just a peaceful meeting to discuss what was happening then) will always be true soldiers and martys for us throughout eternity.Jai Hind🙏🇮🇳💜🌹

Udham Singh was an Punjabi revolutionary belonging to the Ghadar Party, best known for his assassination in London of Michael O'Dwyer, the former lieutenant governor of the Punjab in India, on 13 March 1940. The assassination was done in revenge for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar in 1919, for which O'Dwyer was responsible.Singh was subsequently tried and convicted of murder and hanged in July 1940. While in custody, he used the name Ram Mohammad Singh Azad, which represents the three major religions of Punjab and his anti-colonial sentiment.

Although the documentary was on the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre specifically, they didn't not mention two important points that had their origin in this incidence. 1. Bhagat Singh (he was a child at that time, 9-10 yrs old) visited the place and took the blood soaked soil from there. It was the start of his hatred for the British Empire. 2. Udham Singh eventually travelled to London and killed O'Dwyre in a public meeting. These two very important points they didn't even touch. Also, Gandhi launched the Non-cooperation campaign after Jallianwala Bagh incidence, and abruptly called it off after the Chauri Chaurah incidence, leaving lakh of students high and dry, because they had left their schools (Government Schools), burnt their books (printed by British Empire), burnt British made clothes, on Gandhi's call. This documentary and others like this always portray the good side of Gandhi. They never mention the blunders he committed. That's not fair.
The reason why he called off was because the people who committed in chauri chaura broken the golden rule of the movement, 'ahimsa'. If the violence continued the British would have every reason to declare us as terrorist and straight away shoot us. Remember the British at tht time wsnt under east company but under direct queens rule. There were still barriers for the army to shoot peaseful protestors without warning. Non-violence @ tht time without any weoponry of ourself to defend would be a straight suicide.

I remember my grandmother telling me when I was very little and on her knee, how a distant relative of ours had gone to Jallianwala Bagh that day. She described how he'd bathed before going and talked about what would be for lunch when he came back and my little mind never forgot that.

It was Dyer who ordered the shooting. Dwyer was the governor who praised Dyer's actions. And Udham singh killed Dwyer. Dyer unfortunately lived a comfortable life and became really wealthy

@@TheB657 there are a lot of religious and non religious organisations operating all over India on a large scale providing free lunches to poor kids in government schools and just free food for people in general. Especially in this time of the pandemic not only such organisations but the local government bodies of many states and many civilians came out to help migrant workers and homeless people with free food and free transport facilities. At the end of the day it doesn't matter how many temples or churches you join if you have no generosity of heart. I think Indians operating such societies in the west where they provide free food to people are mostly Sikhs who have joined gurudwaras or the iskon people, which is great because in India if you even have 30 rupees you can fill your stomach for the day but that's not how it is abroad and without the ngos and charity societies homeless people would starve or do something ilegal. Also comparing both countries is wrong because the social structure, history, economy, population and legal systems everything is different. So what works for the EU will not necessarily work for India and what works for people here will not work for people in Australia.

People who jumped in the well were shot at multiple times till they died. People climbing the walls were shot at. They stopped shooting after 11 minutes only because they were out of ammo; else, by the general's own admission later, they would have continued to shoot.
The Indian National Congress's UK educated elite were just a newer version (stooges) of the British raj; hence no acknowledgment of martyrdom for them.

While the incidence was tragic (and it hits a little harder because i am a Sikh as well), the intentions weren't evil. To be fair there were a group of terrorists hiding in a holy place. @@mishik3078 punjab 1984 barely depicted the true events i watched it several times and to my disappointment it barely mentions the indira gandhi's actions against sikhs, blowing up of akal takht, aftermath of operation blue star : indira kaand. that movie showed nothing of these events even though these events did occurred. why not because the indian government didn't gave censorship and warned to banned the movie on the basis of extreme violence depiction if it contained any such scenes. so tell me how can a person know the full truth of 1984 operation blue star and aftermath: sikh genocide if it's not mentioned in history books, movies can't can't include the scenes of military Tankers blowing up akal takht and firing on golden temple. punjab 1984 falls in the drama category go and search it on google. there isn't a movie that is based solely on operation blue star or a single movie especially on sikh genocide. why?

Rudyard Kipling actually supported General Dyer and even contributed in the fund raised to support him. He even called him 'The man who saved India'. Such is the legacy of the Raj. Kipling anyway had little empathy with what went down at Jallianwala Bagh if you know about what he had written in 'The White Man's Burden'. Funnily enough, people only remember him for The Jungle Book.

Difficult to sit through any viewing or retelling of this terrible, heartbreaking tragedy (totally unnecessary bloodshed) that makes you teary eyed every single time. I remember the dread students would have the day this incident was taught by the teachers and sadly that's going to be the case in the future as well. I remember our teachers and elders saying that most of the soldiers involved in the shooting did not want to or hesitated at first (could be because nothing was going on n they saw that the men were there with their wives, children and parents). So the person in charge told them that if you don't, your family members will be shot instead. Whether they are proclaimed martyrs or not, in the eyes of the Indian public they are martyrs and always will be. They like other people who died for their country (here it is more sad because there was no plan or agenda - just a peaceful meeting to discuss what was happening then) will always be true soldiers and martys for us throughout eternity.Jai Hind🙏🇮🇳💜🌹
