  • THE TRICK TO HANGING A PERFECTLY LEVEL GATE
In this video, we are back at the pipe entrance project. Today I’m installing the driveway entrance gate and stringing barbed wire fence. I’m Austin Ross of arosswelding and on this channel, I share my experiences as a rig welder and what I have going on in my mobile welding business. To hang this heavy duty gate I use a combination of the skid steer and my gate jacks to align it with the pipe post and get it level. Hanging gate can get frustrating so I’m sharing my best trick to making sure they end up level! Then I spend the rest of the day stringing barbed wire building barbed wire fence from the gate brace to the corner post. Subscribe for more videos on metal gate, driveway gate, driveway entrance, custom driveway gates, property entrance, property entrance gates, heavy duty cattle gates, bison gate, pipe fence, pipe gate hinges, farm gate, livestock gate, pipe gate, pipe gate brace, etc.

Throw a chock under the back of your tire before you DC the trailer, then spotting on the ball to reconnect is a breeze. Nice fence!!!!! Love how you care that it's good and straight.

Agreed! I really hate the guys who it there in the air conditioned shop with the suction vent hood and pre-polished new steel plated that were also buffed with acetone and they think they’re showing though how to weld. The real world doesn’t work like that if you’re welding to make a living.

Good video as usual, as a full time fence contractor there are a few things I definitely do diffrent but to each their own.
For a perfectly level gate I figured it out hanging 300 gates in a feedlot. You start level length wise, get you side to side level or however you need it to be to swing rite. Then you put a tack on your top hinge then you do 2 to 3 cranks on your gate jack in the far end of the gate, weld the bottom and top hinge and your height stop. Then when you let it off it will come down level 98% of the time.

In Australia we call them star pickets. A lot of fencers out west have a small generator on their Ute (pick up) and have a swing arm with a jack hammer hanging off it. A simple cup tool to fit the jack hammer and over the top of star picket.
Great work, looks really good. As a carpenter I just can’t see that gate not sagging over time , even without ground movement, given the hinge separation to gate width ratio.

I should start doing small jobs like that in my spare time, I was a Iron Worker for 8yrs building Ethanol Plants I was lead Connector walking "I" beams connecting the steel, really fun and still would be doing it but had a kid and no longer like traveling far anymore. Now I have been doing City Work for about 14yrs in the City I live in and everything is working out perfectly. Keep up the good work and entertainment you have on your channel 👍😉

Tack the top hinge and let the gate hang under it's own weight. Keep the gate straight with latch post so the hinge doesn't turn and make the gate fall. If the gate hangs level you're good. If not you can lift the latch side and add a shim on the bottom hinge to bring it up to level.

  • @robertoobregon3750

You can still add grease fittings. Open gate, drill a small hole. Get a 1/8" npt coupler and weld it to hinge. Install 1/8" npt grease zerk. If coupler is to long, cut it in half, then weld it.
    Great job on fence.

I like the greece zert idea, I might steal that. As for ground shift, deeper down the posts go the less that's as much of a problem. Kinda like footings on a house, frost line up is where most of the movement is. I want gate and corner posts set at least 4' deep. I also like tabs or bolts in the bottom couple feet of posts, and in concrete, so they don't creep/Jack up during freezing/thawing.

  • @francodeibel5626

putting some big Spindels between door and post makes it adjustable, if something is moving. Just drill holes thru the post an stick the spindels thru it to adjust.

Great work. The ground swells and shrinks based on moisture saturation. Also, the second factor is the wire’s coefficients. Cold - all materials shrink and Hot - all materials expand. Wire can pull a brace out of plumb if it’s pulled to tight. Great braces. Should be there for generations to come. 👍

Did you weld a collar to the gate above the hinges to keep the gate from sliding down?

Just wondering if the wire was anchored to the clips welded to the pipe post? If so the bend in the wire around the clip result in excessive stress on the wire. I would think that arrangement will cause the wire to break at that stress riser. Sorry that is the mechanical engineer talking. The farmer in me believes the clip are designed to prevent vertical movement of the wire.

What did you do on the hinge end to them from sliding down? There had to be a stop somewhere on it just did not see it. Good advice on the oval hitch box. Good job.
