DJI Mini 3 Pro Poor Range and Signal Strength Issues (But Not Everybody)

- I have been flying my DJI Mini 3 for about a week now and I have experienced some really poor range and signal strength on every single flight. I am flying the North American FCC version. There are many others that have been reporting this as well but not everybody is experiencing this. Some are having really good results. In this video you can see I do a quick range test and in a rural area, I was only able t get 2700 meters before disconnection. In the city at every location, I fly I am getting disconnected at 200 to 400 meters.

Thanks for the honest review. I haven’t flown mine yet and therefore I can’t give you any feedback until I do.
I hope it’s just a simple fix as a software upgrade since you are not the only one experiencing this problem. I can’t imagine that everyone else’s drone also has a hardware problem. What I’m worried about is that For some of us who do not fly long distance we would never experience this issue.
Thanks Shaun - really appreciate your vids. I'm in rural BC - I've been flying a lot - but always fairly close to home...........no problems as of yet (thankfully!)
Yes. Pls keep us updated. I've just bought mine but haven't had a chance to test. Never ending rain over here 😒
Right on man. How can they advertise 12000 meters range and only get 200 meters???
That’s very wrong 👎👎👎…
One reason why I cancelled my order
I put that question to DJI - they said it should fly 7.2KM in urban areas - mine goes no further than 400 meters at times - sadly, the drone is being returned to DJI today.
I got mine little over two weeks ago. Had to return it due to a video problem right out of the gate. But i did notice i wasn't able to take it as far as i always take my mavic pro I was very disappointed in that as that is a much need for my work on the ranch. Hopefully the new one they are sending me will take care of both issues. I will say that DJI customer care was very nice to deal with and took care of my problem fast.
I notice sudden very erratic signal strength in dense populated areas. The signal loss has been very quick, leading to loss of connection. Thanks for bringing this up with DJI.
Thanks a lot for this video. Unfortunately it´s the same with my Mini 3. Sometimes I have signal lost at 200m in rural areas. I am also in contact with DJI support. I really hope this can be fixed by a firmware update. I love the drone, the footage is phantasic. But the bad range is no fun and even pose a risk.
Thanks for posting this. I want one of these, but will hold off till we see a path to reslolution.
Such a good video! Great job mate :)
Great video. This range issue is the one thing I’m going to wait and see how it pans out before buying.
Hi Shawn. I like your videos as they have very good content. You pay for your drones and other devices so we get an unbiased review, unlike others who get given drones and have faultless reviews. I’m keen for you getting to the bottom of the range issue and looking forward to your findings. Cheers from Perth WA 👍🦘🇦🇺
Thank you very much. I’ll definitely make a follow up once I figure out what’s going on. I have a feeling it could even be just defective hardware maybe there’s a bad batch of chips
Thanks. Interesting. Mine is due in 2 weeks, im based in the UK. I hope I don't have these issues. I just watched the philadelphia vid in the city at night and was amazed at his distance given your comments . Fingers crossed for me.
This is becoming a big issue. people from all over seem to be having problems with signal and range. I don’t seem to be having any issues, but I will keep testing. Great video, thanks for bringing this to light, I hope DJI can get this sorted out soon.
I hope they do, I have a feeling mine will be going back next week
Great Video. Very Interesting On The Variation Of The Results.
Very interesting findings! mine arrived but I haven't had a chance to test it yet. I will definitely be testing this out...
Looking forward to it Jake.
I’ll be curious to see your results. So far I seem to be the only RUclipsr that has got a bad one
THANK YOU! I am experiencing the exact same thing, specifically my new Mini 3 Pro being outperformed routinely by my old Mavic Mini in terms of range. For the record I am in a CE country and flying in a rural area. The new RC is probably a bit more unforgiving in terms of direction and position but I was expecting a lot more from an O3 drone to be honest. Will be interesting if there is a software fix for this or if it is defective hardware units. If it defective hardware it is affecting a LOT of people.
Thanks for sharing your experience
You're experiences are matching mine, when comparing to Mini 2 and Mini 1 (I don't own a Mini SE), although my distances are a bit less due to being constrained by CE rules.
I own mini 2 ,air 2s , Mavic 3 , and Mini 3 , Mini 3 has worst signal of them all . I Have EU version with new controller , and signal and feed starts lag and being jerky when Im maybe approx 300 meters away , didn't have a chance to test signal outside my city for now , but in the same spots Mini 2 , air 2s , and M3 are perfect when it comes to signal strength .Also weird thing when im recording video on mini 2 in windy conditions its more stable when it comes to stabilization , on mini 3 I see camera movement from time to time . Great Video I love to watch your content , keep it up :)
Great video Shawn,
Hope DJI comments soon. I hope DJI looks after its customers.
Just got mine today Johnny. If I have that issue, it’s going back. My mini 2, is WAY beyond VLOS! Good luck, Nick
I got my Mini 3 Pro a couple of days ago. I fly it in Tombstone Arizona and Sierra Vista. Out in the desert here in Arizona, I took it out 9000 ft. 200 feet height. No issue with signal. Flew here in town out 5000 feet, no issue. Thanks for the info.
I live in Sierra Vista too. I own the Mavic 2 Pro and waiting for the Mini 3 Pro to be shipped. Good to see someone else in the Sierra Vista, AZ area has DJI products. Hope the Mini 3 pro I’m getting doesn’t have range issues.
Just a had a couple first flights today. Also having range issues in central NJ (only about 500m max). Will have to contact DJI, thanks for verifying that I'm not the only one!
I agree Shawn send it back.👍
Very interesting thanks
Just watched Mikey‘s video where he got about a mile and a half flying as usual route across Philadelphia. We are having problems with it purely because the CE don’t allow the same amount of output power as the FCC. Okay so I made this comment before you mentioned it in the video. I can’t comment on any issues yet as my drone will arrive on Thursday I’ve had to fly more kit for three weeks
My Air 2s which used to be able to fly 5 miles out over the ocean without any issue can no longer fly 1000 feet away without RC signal interference and multiple lost connections. My M3 sees RC signal interference frequently when 1000 feet away, but no lost connections yet. I was using the RC Pro for both of these aircraft.
Thank you Shawn for sharing your knowledge. By the way, very well the way you treated this issue … a BIG ISSUE of MINI 3 Pro, as well as the fact that It gets very hot when is still…ALSO the new RC…very hot both???? Or continue with Air 2 S despite >250 grs.
Thanks for reporting this. I'll be waiting for your updates and hold off on this big purchase until the issue is fixed 100%.
I will definitely make a follow up video
Any follow up? Got mines yesterday and first flight ….. lost signal. Never had his issue on all my other dji drones. So disappointed.
Well for the most part latest firmware update corrected my issue I was able to get as far as some of my other DJI drones. I did a range comparison with my mini 2 A few weeks back after the update. I think what they’ve done is a Band-Aid fix and I think we’ll see more updates to correct it further
@@AirPhotography I agree. Thanks for the replt
Hello. I live in Switzerland 🇨🇭 and O have the mini 3 pro for 1 week.
I have the feeling the range is just ok, but worse than my the mini 2 and my Air2s.
I just hope a firmware update can change something. It would be strange that half of the drone have a problem in the factory 😅😅. I hope DJi will say something cause the price with the RC is pretty expensive 🥲.
Thanks for your video 👍🏼👍🏼
I have flown my Mini 3 once so far. The range was comparable to my Mini 2 and not a problem. I need to have more time on the sticks though.
Thanks for the valuable information, even here in Italy many have reported this problem, and many who have YT channels pretend nothing. I don't know how Dji does the flow test but here is something wrong, and I'm afraid it's a hardware problem, I'm waiting for not to spend that amount on a drone with that limit.
Super cool, my is coming tomorrow 🤟🏼🤝😎
Wow! Definitely needs a software update (hope that’s what’s going on and not a factory fail). I will have mine in 1-2 weeks I’m FCC also (Argentina) and I will look for that. Hope they patch this up (glad to hear that at least it’s for both controllers, some people were saying that this is due to the fact the new rc has built in antennas) and quickly , it doesn’t make any sense a mini se with enhanced wifi has more range capabilities than the new flagship mini . Keep us updated please and I wish this just needs a software update 😅
I was out at a pine plantation and I was having issues at about 600m.
However, if I raised the altitude the rc strength improved just a little.
Its great you checked the RC-N1!! All interesting.
Surely it can be fixed via firmware…
I’ve seen the good and bad with range Yours is definitely under the bar. 👍👍✌️
Thankfully, my first few flights have been smooth and glitch-free but I'm all for anything DJI would do to improve my drone's range and transmission
I'm holding back buying the mini3 until they have sorted out the range /signal issues hopefully by then the availability of buying them will be easier
Thanks! It's probably gonna get fixed on the next update!
Hi Shawn! Glad I have my Autel Nano+. Best camera in a sub-250g drone & since the latest firmware update, I don’t have any problems negotiating Level 5 winds! Best of all NO GEOFENCING or range issues!!!
Yeah good little Drone and actually really good range on it even in the city
What is the range like on that though
Great to know! Thanks for being honest. I’m sellin my Mini2 for Mini 3. Maybe I’ll hold off for more reviews
I canceled my order after seeing several videos about the range issue. I also saw two videos showing uncontrollable descent with one resulting in a crash. Those videos were in windy conditions after receiving battery overload warnings. I have my Mini 2 and might get the Air 2s for areas that I’m allowed to fly it.
Mine had mixed results first flight was in the city and I ran out of battery before running out of range. I flew it out to 5,500 ft in the city and brought it back. I flew it around my house and got about 1,300. Only difference was the trees, and I was basically sitting under a water tower with all kinds of Antenna on it in the city. Bottom line is I'm sending mine back and getting a later production run from Bestbuy when they come out. Better warranty BY FAR than DJI.
Thanks!
wow Mikey thank you very much
It depends where I am flying. In Long Beach, CA., by the Queen Mary, I was having weak signals, some video lag about 350m. I was also limited to fly only 100 feet. That could have been the issue. However, flying the drone at my neighborhood park, I did not have any weak signals or video lag. There I was able to fly up to 400 feet. I use the smart contoller.
Im from Canada its interesting to hear you from the same country is having signal problems i dont have the Mini 3 yet but i got the original Mavic mini and the range signal seems to be fine i also have the Mini 2 as well but never tested it yet hopefully it will be good as well but yes please keep us updated on that issue cause i am buying the Mini 3 this aug
Did a direct comparison with my mini 2 and yeah...the mini 3 (with the smart controller/top of the line package one) gives me about half the expected range when compared to my mini 2. I'm in downtown Mississauga not to far from Pearson in an authorization zone surrounded by businesses and the Mini 2 destroys the Mini 3 range wise 2 to 1 distance wise. This thing definitely needs a firmware update.
me too!!!
Just got mine yesterday but haven't flown. Will do so this weekend and check mine.
Hi, I have a new M3Pro with RC controller here in the UK. I have experienced weak signal strength in a semi rural setting at just 486 feet distance and 200 feet altitude. I have reported it to DJI Support who then requested flight logs, signal traces etc. which I will try to provide when I fly next. I also asked the question whether the controller transmission power was different (less) on the European model to that of the US version. The question was ignored. If the controller isn’t attenuated in the CE firmware then maybe it’s the position of the antenna’s. My Mini 2 has them in the legs I think, which would provide better reception / signal contact area. Whereas the Mini 3 has just the two tiny fins underneath, not sure if this could be detrimental. I hear, as you say, that some folks suffer and others don’t which adds to the mix. I would like to have confidence that the drone performs to even 80% of the published spec, if only to avoid constant RTH’s and messed up footage. Too much of a problem for DJI to ignore I think. Thanks for your video I will be keeping an eye on the situation. Keep the faith 🤞
1300metres here. Hope those with distance issues get a fix soon. Mine definitely goes further than I would like to risk!
Just to add that I took my Mini 2 for a flight in an area I've flown a couple of times before and started to get signal issues at 300m, definitely not normal and quite disappointing as I know it's good to a much better range when in the countryside with good line of sight.
I waited so long for the mini 3 and placed my order a couple months ago. After all these range issues I canceled my order yesterday. I live in a remote area where long range flying is safe. If they remedy this issue I will reorder later. DJI needs some strong competition to keep em honest
Let wait what DJI has to say for this! Hope the range issue would be fixed bec. it's been amazing flying this drone
Put your Mini3 into locked 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz, and see if its a bug that plays along here in the early days of Mini3 and its a little confused in choosing the best channel, which are fundamental in occusynch.
2.4Ghz should be the one where you usually get the longest range.
I had the same problem with the Mini 3 Pro. The range was worse than my Mini 2 in the same tree lined route. So I returned it. I love the built in display and obstacle sensing, but the poor range makes the Mini 3 a flop so far. Also a minor issue - the Mini 2 has a much nicer body and battery compartment design. If they fix the range issue I’ll buy it again.
Thanks for sharing
See I wouldn’t return it based on the range. It’s not my main drone. I am using it mainly for footage for social media. I use my 2S for paid work. Yes the range at this time isn’t optimal but factoring in convenience, the amazing controller, vertical mode and portability… it’s still a home run of a drone that I am proud to own.
Id like to add my 2 cents in this issue. Everything you said in the video is exactly what I am experiencing. I am in BC Canada FCC 0200 firmware RC and . Mini 2 has no signal quality issues for me but this mini 3 is terrible. Please update us. I have already talked to DJI and they think I am a moron, always saying point the remote to the drone, move to another location with less interference, change sd card, reset remote etc etc. They are probably reading this right now, please help us out DJI. Also, please post a follow up video in regards to this signal quality issue. Thanks!!
Let’s hope the range distance gets sorted! I have the mini 3 but have not flown it yet! I’m beginning to think that maybe there’s some kind of restrictor built In that the FAA and the CAA are demanding! You need to feel confident to travel 3 to 4 hundred meters without loss of signal!.... that’s a failure in my book! Hope you get a reasonable response from DJI ! 👍
Ohh that’s interesting. By the way shout out to that mini se! That’s a little beast!
Indeed it is a great little Drone for the price
I’m glad I just bought the Mini 2.
Interesting findings, Shawn. Your test in the country has me wondering if the drone didn't switch from the 5GHz bands to 2.4GHz (obviously, there's longer range with the lower frequencies) as the 2.5-3km range is when I'd generally expect 5GHz to bottom-out. Some of the European reviews had noted an increase in range after a firmware update... and I wonder if something is still buggy with the auto frequency selection. As an experiment, you might try switching from auto and manually locking the transmission frequency. As a reference, maybe see what frequency that Mini SE (or your mavic) prefers at a distance in your testing location.
I'd say it's time for some manual frequency testing.
Hi
Thank you for your response, in my country there is no 5GHZ, and in an open area I manage to reach up to 2KM maximum
Thank you. There is clearly a bug in the transmission tech.
DJI should welcome this. On paper this thing is a home run. If they have to make some tweaks, so be it. The standard is their own product: the Mini 2. Just universally reproduce that transmission strength and all is well.
I like your handling of this. If your perception is that transmission is acceptable, good for you and you can move on. 50% however saying their perception is poor. No such issue existed for the Mini 2.
New insight that it is likely the drone and not the new RC…
Just curious where you got 50%
Never mind, I rewatched the video and heard it.
We as consumers have to hold the manufacturers accountable for their advertised capabilities. Just because you’ll likely never need to fly it out that far, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be able to do so. A defect is a defect.
Here, here. I second that… they should also be providing much more ease of use and transparency around reception in general. Perhaps some kind of range estimate for the direction you’re controller and drone are facing, which would probably be unreliable but a keyhole at least to look through.
U are right tge signal is very bad
I too am having range issues. Its a pain at times. Even disconnecting in under normal line of sight range.
In central Florida, mine finally arrived an hour ago, now charging RC and the 3 batteries w Mavic 3 cables. Will let you know.
I heard from the grapevine that firmware updates will fix that up right soon. Fingers crossed! Another thing to consider is that I've seen users fly the Mini 3 Pro up to 8 km. So yeah it's really a case to case basis.
Until now no problem with mine ! Lisbon Portugal
Of course, not everyone has problems, people lie to themselves, so no one says that they have problems, those who admit it, are those who have saved and now are angry because they have spent 1000 of euros. Thanks for your video.
I am also from BC Canada this is my first drone and honestly I was expecting a little more. I manage 360 M before return to home was initiated. Hope they fix the issue
Finally a honest video about the mini 3 signal problems . Thank you sir . Subbed 👍👌🇺🇸
Please keep us updated 😀
Thank you and welcome aboard
I bought Mini3 being sure it's a 50% range upgrade from my old Mavic Pro (10km vs 7km). In reality it's way WORSE. I'm using it to check on my cattle across multiple pastures and i cannot fly as low as i was used to with Mavic Pro.
I am having the same issue. Just purchased mine on 10 Mar 23. The Mini 3 only achieves 608m over the ocean. My mini does 2.5km and the mini 2 does 3.5km before disconnecting at the same area.
Great video as always, this might sound a bit too obvious did you check the drone was in FCC mode rather than CE ?
I’m not quite sure how to check that, I do believe it’s just a regional thing so should automatically put me in FCC mode
love your reviews thank you. Now just wander why they did not have external antennas like on all other controllers ? may be it will make a difference?
I got the mini 3 about 3 weeks and have no interference with the range. Can fly here in holland for more that 1000m and no problem.
Also in Canada and have disconnect at 300m with the new RC and maybe 400m with the N1. My mini 2 just fine in the samr location. The mini 3 seems to cut as soon as there are a few tiny branch between me and the drone. The orientation of tge remote seem to have a role, but not as much as when there are a few branches between... Never had these issues with the mini 2...
Thank you for sharing your feedback
returned mine today - range was 600m max CE - LOL - went straight back to shop - my old mavic pro could go 2kms no problems in same area !
I think that the DJI mini 3 pro as far as the transmission signal is concerned is a big disappointment the DJI has to solve this problem because a drone that costs so much money these things don't have to happen I keep in mind that an OQ sync 3.0 and inconcep I hope so much that this problem be solved as soon as possible👍👍👍👍
This is a shame for an otherwise impressively engineered drone. I hope this doesn't drag on like our Mavic 3 GNSS Satellite acquisition times. When we got V01.00.0600 in March I suddenly STARTED getting disconnected with RC Pro, constantly and Airsense hasn't worked for me since January... I have it sent in for hopefully a fix.. Come on DJI, Mini 3 is so close to best in class. Don't let ot fail on a single issue failure.
I'm certainly having range issues, maybe it's because I'm in the UK but the range I've seen from other surpasses mine. I haven't tried the standard controller yet but I heard it has something to do with the smart controller. I hope the range is fixed on the next update.
I agree, my distance range is very disappointing.
There is a guy in Asia that’s been posting videos of 13km or more ..could be fake doesn’t look to be…I really want to order one once there available here in the PNW (looks like August) I don’t know the autel lite plus seems to be better looking the more I investigate the pros and cons…even the air2s or mavic 3 … this drone addiction sure hurts my brain LoL…thanks for sharing
I just received my Mini 3 yesterday with the new RC remote, did a quick test flight today, I live in a rural area but lots of trees with leaves of course. I flew out to just over 1000 feet with no issues of signal loss or drop out. I'll be testing further soon. So quiet too.
Lol if I was just going 1000 feet I wouldn't even buy a drone. Mine always stays 1 to 2 miles away. My kids 30 dollar snaptain goes further then that
@@w.e.s. Being a 74 year old quadriplegic and flying from a wheelchair , my eyesight probably isn't as good as yours, besides I do my best to follow FAA rules on line of sight. If I were as perfect as you and obviously both a professional and wealthy I'd probably see if that advertised 12K range worked. Sorry I don't measure up to your lofty ability.
@@Norlin68 I've seen people in wheelchairs fpv like crazy. Ur eye sight is on the screen not the air. Who cares about the faa
I did 7008m with the RC controller and 7087 m with the RC-N1 controller with the low power EU/CE version of Mini 3 PRO under ideal conditions as you can see in one of my recent videos.
Damn. That's what we should expect from this drone. I mean most people wont ever fly even close to half that far, but it's great to know it's capability. Shame that some people have issues. Really want to get this drone, but too many reports of poor range.
I had a very interesting experience too. Day 1 the Mini 3 worked great, but I took it out on a different day and it couldn’t find gps signal saying that there was no gps module. I reset, calibrated gps for it, tried a RC N-1, and talked to DJI support. I must’ve just gotten a bad unit. There may have been some quality control issues for GPS and Antenna on the Mini 3 :(
Have really seen anyone with the same issue!
I didnt see your poll, but i am affected here in the UK I lose signal at a similar distance 250m and thats flying over open countryside so very concerning.
Interesting!!
I totally agree with you I have had my Mini 3 Pro with the RC controller for 3 weeks and my range is very poor 100/200mitres I have expressed this a few times on different RUclips channels and Facebook what makes it more frustrating is it's supposed to have OcuSync 3 should I contact DJI support surely this should not be happening especially after what you have paid for this Drone and RC.
Certainly contact DJI support. If this is a HW issue you want to be logged with them to get a replacement unit.
Having my Mini3 1 week ago. I experienced the same issue in certain situations. It is quite hard to tell what is causing this though becuause I managed to fly 2400m and 300 as well in the exact same location until I got a disconnection… strange. I am really looking forward to DJI replies.
I think the difference between Mini 2 and 3 might due to the two "leg" removed. That are the longer antennas.
I've had issues at 200m in the countryside! This is leaving me massively uncomfortable to even try in the city!
Hi
Strangely enough I had my mini 2 out this afternoon and experienced signal issues. I am in the country and was operating in line of sight. I've never had this problem before. Possibly related to software?
I flew mine recently in the Gold Coast of Australia, surrounded by huge hotels and serious potential interference. Not one bar drop at 500m.
I’m in UK managed to get mine out 1700m other day but the strange thing is it dropped signal to practically no signal I hover there and then it would go to 4 bars fluctuating back and forth so some antenna frequency switching issues going on somewhere
Same for me, just 400 to 450m in Sweden…
Hi, I was wondering if you know the new firmware updates fixed this issue?
I was also getting poor range and it was constantly getting disconnected, I was flying it all over Thailand (Phuket) and Bali. I picked up my drone in South Korea, and I have the new DJI RC.
Hi Shaun, I live in the UK and I have a similar issue to you. I can sometimes fly out 200-300m and I am getting a bad connection (2 or 3 bars). I don’t think I’ve managed to get 3km without being disconnected. Do you feel it could be a faulty unit?
Hi Vince, are you still having the same issues? I've only had my mini 3 for 3 days and the furthest I've managed is 300m before it returns to home.
I’m still waiting for my mini 3 pro to be delivered soon.
Seeing all this comments makes me worry.
Please keep us updated on dji response
Thank you
Thanks for your report. I understand you fly your drone in the US, correct? I checked UPCs and there is only a single version of the M3P, same in US and EU - it is just switched to FCC or CE mode according to location. Initially, I was a bit disappointed with range with my M3P but it was in CE mode. Meanwhile, I managed to fly my M3P in FCC mode and I seem to get good range: I haven flown it 400m **into** (not over) a narrow gorge with waterfalls, one turn after the other, before the signal eventually dropped red. Ie., that was with tons and tons of rock between the craft and me ... (the vlos must have been 200m into rock minimum - but of course, signal could still reflect off the gorge walls to reach the craft).
I thought the issue may be with an over-cautious CE mode. Thanks to your report, we know otherwise. Seems to be a quality issue with mounting the antennas.
Just to be sure: you **did** make sure your configuration was in dual band or 2.4 GHz, did you? I am not sure but 5.8GHz only seems to be the default. 5.8GHz in CE mode is almost useless.
Let me add a note: a recent range test flight with my M3P in CE mode with the RC, at 100m height over flat rural terrain with forests at a distance but blocking vlos, pilot not elevated, yielded 1800 m range before RTH.
I got connection issues at about 250m in LOS. My old Mini 1 got way further, same spot, same day. Hope it can be fixed with a firmware update. Do they have quality control?
Im having range problems. Out in the country, line of sight and weak/no signal at 1500ft (0.5km). Kicks in RTH. Recently purchased in US. Dji RC, latest firmware.
Friend in Hawaii just got his said he has connection issues. Kind of stinks. Hopefully they resolve it.
Same. I’ve had great connection but mostly bad. I’ve never tested the possible reasons, but could the two different batteries be a factor?
