I’m a recent subscriber as well as a seasoned canoeist in the Algonquin park. I’m currently recovering from reconstructive ankle surgery and enjoying your adventures to some of the area I’ve visited . I’m getting on in years (70) but still hope to visit again with my grandchildren, it is a special place. The fishing there is challenging, I had success after some local knowledge to use salted minnows with minnow rigging. Continued success and good health !
Thank you for the kind words! I wish you all the best with your recovery, and that you'll be able to visit the park again next year with your grandkids. Those are memories they will never forget.
I love watching your videos, feels like Im right there, You should really taked extra food, even if its a freeze dried, you never know you could get stuck for an extra day any given trip
Thanks for commenting! I’m glad you enjoyed! On more remote trips i definitely make sure that I have sufficient food. In places like Algonquin I don’t mind feeling a bit hungry from time to time.
I prefer solo trips, more wildlife and peacefullness. I appreciate the effort it takes to get the footage to make these videos. Sometimes it distracts some from the trip, but please know that it is enjoyed by many. Thanks for sharing.
Yes it does take quite a bit of effort, but I genuinely enjoy it. And it makes me happy to hear that others enjoy watching my videos as well. Thank you for your kind words.
Dude you did it again. I am so there with you, and that is a gift to be able to pull people into your experience. Thank you so much. And you listened to your Subs and included fishing. Bonus!
Tip! Fish upstream Because the current is what brings food to all fish species in a river system, they always hold with their noses facing up current. Therefore, it's hugely important to fish in current by casting upstream and retrieving your bait with the current. 1:14:03
I’ve camped on that exact site on Little Trout Lake. It’s a long haul down the length of Ralph Bice, but worth it. There’s a site at the far end of Little Trout Lake, past the portage, that is apparently a beach site - on my list to visit. Good video. I’m off to Killarney next week - hopefully the bugs will be thinning out (unlikely though). Cheers.
I’ve actually visited that “beach site” you are referring to. The water levels were high and there wasn’t much of a beach at all from what I can remember. Hope you enjoyed your Killarney trip!
I'm just into watching this, but I can see, at 7:17 in, why you do what you do. The shadows and fading light, the lapping sounds of the water from your oar, the sounds of the bird calls as they settle in for the night - all of it spells Peace. ❤
Oh yeah! So beautiful and peaceful... apart from those pesky black flies of course. Wonderful wildlife - I particularly love to hear the birds calling in the evening light. Thank you for bringing us along, it was a fantastic trip. And perfectly filmed, as always. I did miss seeing what your meal was at the end of the trip though!!! :)
Another very relaxing video. Thanks for sharing! The black flies were making me feel itchy though lol. All the moose sightings were awesome. We stopped at the site in Grassy Bay on our November trip and had to smash through ice to get to it. It was so cold! Great looking site in warmer temps though.
Thanks Steph! Yeah it was a fun trip despite the bugs. I really loved that grassy bay site - had paddled past it so many times before without ever stopping to check it out.
My son and I would like to document and post some of our trips on you tube. Can you recommend a beginner camera that would be suitable for this. Much appreciated.
Another great video. Enjoyed it al lot, thanks for that 🍻 I’m ordering a Prospecteur 15 of my own for solo use here in Australia (in olive with wood trim) at the moment. It’s been good to watch you put one through its paces, seems ideal for my purposes. First time I’ve seen one with the second seat removed. Looks like it really opens the boat up for storage. Thinking I’ll be doing that with mine when it comes 🤔
Glad to hear that you enjoyed the video Scott! That’s a beautiful colour and trim combo for your Prospecteur! Olive green is my favourite colour. If you will be primarily using it solo, removing the front seat allows you to trim the boat really well by giving you room to put your pack up front. I definitely recommend it. Enjoy your new canoe!
@@kevinthewild hey mate, thanks a lot. Can’t wait to have a go at doing the sort of stuff you (and your compatriots) are doing. These sort of canoes haven’t had a big following here so far, but that’s definitely changing as the subtle advantages of them are becoming understood. I wish I’d learned more about them years ago 🤷♂️ Anyway, keep up the great work. I think I’ve now paddled over most of your waterways there with you now 🍻
Awesome trip. I was surprised how many youtubers were out at the same time in the same area; the Baird bros, Shawn James, Derek S, Xander Budnick, and of course you. The loons and peepers were calling you out. Perfect weather except for 1 day. Sorry the fishing sucked but you got to see all those newborn moose. Thanks for sharing.
I really like your channel, very calming and soothing. I live in Ontario but have only been to Algonquin Park once in 1999. Thank you for sharing your adventures, you are truly inspiring!
Awesome trip Kev! Now watching this video made me realize that we passed you when you were waiting at Big Trout. We should’ve followed your lead, crazy paddle through the headwinds that day!
What an epic journey here!! Holy cow!! You captured everything so well!! The loons, the buzzing of the black flies, everything!! I guess I’m always surprised to see more people in tents than hammocks at Algonquin. I’ve camped in so many campgrounds that you paddle into or drive to and the tent pad becomes a frog pond after any decent storm. That was why I switched back to hammocks, especially in backcountry. I went on that solo trip last weekend and it was good I brought a hammock system cuz it probably rained about 4” up there over the weekend. There was a small stream flowing underneath my hammock late last Saturday night!🤣. Good stuff here man!! Thank you for taking us along!!!
i finished a 5 day on your Saturday morn and thought wow! these people coming in are in for it. I learned with drizzle on last day that I have to reconfigure my set up totally to trip through rain and bug season. I met a couple leaving on day 2 of 3 day because tent failed and it was mild up to then.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I've actually never tried hammock camping, but who knows I might some day. I already have so much gear as it is though 😄
What a awesome trip video! I met you with my friends at the beginning of this trip on Magnetawan in May when you were loading gear into your canoe. Glad you had a great trip.
@@kevinthewild yes it was a great fishing trip our group did well! honestly man this video is great I'm glad you told me about your channel. good luck on your next trip!
Another fine video Kevin, one to savour. Love the pace of these, your great cinematography, and just the general relaxing vibe. I'm glad to see you've got a Helinox chair, sometimes a camping pad on the hard rock is just not comfy enough! 🙂
Thanks Matt! I've had that chair for many years, decided to bring it along again now that I'm double carrying. Forgot how nice it is to sit in a chair after a long day!
Can’t wait to watch this one kind sir! I just got back from my first solo backpacking trip yesterday up in Vermont. I was terrified the whole week before… now I only want to do solo trips! It’s crazy! Looking forward to giving this a watch during dinner! Take care.
Everyone associates the Loon to Portaging, which is awesome, but I feel that white-throated sparrow is just as much a part of Ontario portaging. Great looking trip Kev. I just finished a 5 day in there to big trout, and nobody in there. The birds were the highlight of this one in breeding season. And multiple moose sightings in June. Just tough out the bugs for a bit and perfection. You stayed at the big trout site I just stayed at. I stayed there because i came from white trout lake( not small) in high winds and was happy to just get there in tact and fearful of moving out onto big trout in those winds. I commenting(edit) as I watch...that section in grassy bay was so windy when i came through that i barely paddled. I just dug in the paddle like a rudder and hoped i made the bends...not even enough time to pull out the camera as 3 moose were in there!! There was a campsite there(first one west to east) that I thought would be a spectacular site to stay at overlooking those wetlands...but not when I was there without a bug shelter, more so early spring. u gotta bring powdered protein.
I agree Brent - the white-throated sparrow is my favourite song bird. Sounds like you had a great trip! June is the best month for spotting wildlife but yes the bugs can be rough. Smart move not to carry-on in high winds. Cheers
Thx for the trip, enjoyed it very much. Calm and relaxing scenes, reminds me of my own waterways here in Norway wich I like to explore. Have a nice weekend and summer man 😊
Awesome wildlife sightings, I didn't see any moose this year.....I think those might be Fallfish....New boat looks nice and a little more versatile then the swift but I guess it's a trade off from the day's of solo ports with the swift.
Thanks Jay. I'm sure you'll spot some on your next trip. Regarding the new boat - yes it is a huge trade off. If I was only planning on tripping in Algonquin I definitely would have kept the Swift. Double carrying is a lot more work - and really slows me down. That said, I'm really enjoying the Esquif and I will need its toughness on some future trips.
Great video, really enjoyed it! I'm a fisheries biologist. Those fish you were calling "suckers/whitefish" are actually Fallfish. They're a large species of minnow in the family Leuciscidae. Not great eating lol.
Great video. Nice coincidences too. I was on Big Trout this May 2-4 weekend, at the site across from you at the head of the channel leading to White Trout Lake, and 2 years ago on the same long weekend I spend 2 nights at the site on Misty Lake (amazing site). Enjoy your travels
I was expecting this after your cameo in Ted's video. I start a 5 day trip tomorrow (june 21) and it looks like I will have to make that payment back to Mother nature after the absolute perfect weather of last falls trip when when I had seen you on N. Grace Lk. That's the way it goes. Great spring tripping area you were in for this one. Awesome video as usual!
As a career chef, I am impressed by your flipping of the pancakes. The reason is….the lip of your pan is too steep to flip easily. If you have a pan with a slightly less steep lip, you will be flipping those flaps like a breeze. ….Tom
Buddy! Another awesome adventure will give it a watch! (Another great thumb btw well done). Kev, what's your waterproof backpack you're using?? I need to get one asap!!! How do you like it?
Thanks Eze! That backpack is a Mountain Equipment Company Slogg 115 HD. It's a Canadian brand, so I'm not sure if it can be purchased elsewhere. You might just have to pick one up on your next canoe trip over here 😄
Kev! You’ve inspired me to start canoeing myself. I’ll be headed on my 3rd trip next week to Algonquin. I’ve been struggling to get good photo/video with my iPhone. Wondering what camera you use, I’m assuming you’ve got it on a mount so you can spin it either towards you or away?
That’s amazing! So glad to hear that! I’ve used several different cameras and setups. Sony mirrorless cameras like an A7C. Definitely not necessary to film a canoe trip. The device I used on this video is a gimbal. It stabilizes the camera but I found it too bulky and cumbersome. I have since sold it.
Hey great trip. No junk food at the end ,l always wonder what you are going to have. Oh and why did you throw the suckers back in? they are really good. eating..My hats off to you doing the trip all alone.
Haha. I was in a bit of a rush this time so I just made a quick stop to the Timmies drive-through on my way home. And I had no idea those suckers were good eating!
Nice trip Kev. Thanks. How are you liking the Esquif over your Swift? - not so much the brand but the material and the difference in weight and handling. Iw as thinking of getting a canoe in a tougher lay op but nor sure if I want to deal with the extra weight. Pros and cons I guess.
I really enjoy the stability, volume and toughness of the Esquif. Even though it's stable it's also fairly maneuverable with a decent amount of rocker. It's a great do-it-all solo expedition canoe. It's slower and much heavier than a dedicated solo kevlar boat, but if you only want to own one canoe for a mix of whitewater and lake travel, I don't think there is a better choice.
What length and brand of canoe do you use? Looking at getting a lightweight canoe for wife and I and dog. Envious of your camping spots. I really enjoy your videos!!
Hey Scott. This canoe is an Esquif Prospecteur 15'. It's made in T-Formex, which is an expedition / whitewater layup. It weighs 60 lbs. If you are looking for a lightweight canoe, Kevlar is the way to go.
Excellent video! Plan on entering northern Quetico Sept. 1st for my first 10-day solo. Learn so much from watching your video. Couple questions on your cooking. I am using a combination of campfire and the little jet boil tank like yours. How long does one last? Are 2 small tanks like yours enough to take on a 10-day trip when I'll be mainly boiling water for coffee and dehydrated foods and cooking fish? Also, what do you use for oil to fry fish and how much do you generally take? Also, just curious I noticed you are switching from a double kayak to a single wooden paddle. I'm thinking you might be using the double paddle to cover more open water. Also, what length of kayak paddle are you using? I have a 250-centimeter double kayak paddle I may take not sure if it will be long enough?? Thanks so much for any info!
Hey Kyle! Regarding the fuel, I use 200g canisters. I think two of those should be sufficient to get you through a 10 day trip, as long as you are not wasteful and you block the wind to boil more efficiently. When it's windy, l use my foam pad as a wind block. I cook with olive oil simply because it's healthier. In an emergency, you can add the oil to your meal or even drink it for extra calories. Hope you have a blast on your trip!
Great video and seemed like a great trip. I have two questions for you Kev. One is how long does it take you to do a 1K average portage with a double carry? It takes me approx 1 hr to do the 3 km total but not sure if this is normal. Did that 1.7km portage seem ok with that new heavy canoe you have or make you wish you had the old lighter one. I am so close to pulling the trigger and getting the same one. Keep these great inspirational videos coming
Hey Cliff. I’m honestly not quite sure how long a 1k portage now takes me with a double carry - but the difference feels significant. It is 3 times the distance after all. You definitely have to give yourself more time when planning a trip. This was an easy trip compared to past ones, so it wasn’t an issue and I really do enjoy the walk back for the second load.
Like the traditional paddling and canoe . But you're a bit shy on the fishing .On a remote trip as this just got to get more fish . But watching a lot of youtube canoers their technique is not good .At least not mine . I'm figuring the bigger lakes were not warm enough for the specks but a laker or two can still be caught .I also use a 15 ' bob special which i think is a better canoe .
I'm very much an amateur when it comes to fishing, so I've got a lot to learn. I also slept in late every single day on this trip, so I was often fishing mid-day which is not ideal lol. Yeah the Bob special seems like a great canoe, but I'm going to be happy to have the extra volume and durability of my Esquif P15 for an upcoming trip.
@@kevinthewild My bob is suited to Algonquin where there is less whitewater . But at 38 lbs it's easy to portage. But even as a UL its pretty durable. Has a DOT of 800 lbs so it can carry some load . Never found early morning good for specks .If i'm up yeah i'll go out for a troll. But its normally pushing 10 am before i'm on the water .
I watch Jim & Ted, Xander & Maxim Budnick, and also Justin Barbour. I always wondered if you knew them or followed them. I did not see your cameo in their video, I'm going to have to rewatch that. Love your videos Kev.👍👍👍

@@kevinthewild😂 Maybe so - but this is the best, most authentic canoe tripping content on RUclips and it keeps getting better all the time. Keep ‘em coming, Kev. 👍
It's the revised bugaboo pan from GSI - it now comes with a ceramic coating instead of Teflon. I'm very impressed with it so far - haven't put it in a campfire yet though.
Hi, I enjoy your blog but you really need to learn how to handle fish. Your release method sucks. If you are not keeping it don't let it flop on the rocks. Release it by holding it's tail in the water until it takes off. Other than that good luck. By the way, I'm an avid fisherman from Newfoundland
I had a blast on this trip, and I hope you enjoyed coming along. You can catch my cameo in Ted Baird's video here: ruclips.net/video/wiIrrplKSow/видео.htmlsi=pizvDmJLcIoHsNbw&t=7683

Yes I remember! That was the best weather I've ever had on a canoe trip! Have fun!
Thank you again for a fabulous video full of peace and inspiration ❤
Glad you liked it 😊
Another great video... oh yeah
Oh yeahhh! 😄
As a career chef, I am impressed by your flipping of the pancakes. The reason is….the lip of your pan is too steep to flip easily.
If you have a pan with a slightly less steep lip, you will be flipping those flaps like a breeze. ….Tom
Good to know! And thank you!
Loved it Kev!!! Thanks for sharing! Jim from Texas.
Very cool to know that I’ve got viewers all the way down in Texas! Cheers Jim 🍻
Great trip so peaceful. What no stopping for fast food at the end? lol
This time it was just the Timmies drive-through for a chicken chipotle wrap, iced capp, and a 10 pack of timbits lol
Really enjoyed your video. Thanks for making and sharing it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great content brother. Thanks for sharing
Thank you!
Great inspiration! Off on a 4 day solo trip to the east side of the park tomorrow.
Awesome! But you should probably get some sleep rather than watch this video lol. Hope you have a blast!
@@kevinthewild Haha thanks! Yes will have to watch the rest when I'm back.
great video
Thanks!
Are you doing anymore trips in algonquin sense your spring trip. ?
I must say you do some amazing trips.
Thanks Robert. I have done and will do a few more trips this year. Life is busy though and I don’t want to rush the videos. Cheers
You might just have to pick one up on your next canoe trip over here 😄
@@kevinthewild Thanks buddy, working on that!! (Canada trip 🙂)
Great video!! I did the same loop ~1 week earlier (no moose for me, I'm jealous).
Very cool!
Being the health conscious guy that I am, I cringed when you ate the Jos Louis. Lol. Oh ya, it's fluffy, but you don't wanna know how. Lol
Haha I know. It’s a very rare treat for me nowadays 😄
Fantastic video, as always from you! Can I ask what microphone you use? The sound is perfect.
Honestly I started tripping because of you and I love it! So thanks for all the content ❤
I came for the canoe camping content but stayed for the Jos Louis talk! How did you keep that bad boy from not getting completely squished!😅
It wasn’t easy! 😅
What was in the orange suitcase? Great trip by the way.
Thank you! I keep all my camera gear in there.
duh, stupid me
Territoty of mother nature
Thanks. Wonderful. Amazing. I have a question. In the night do you put the boat in a safety place? Greetings from Panamá 🇵🇦
Thanks Yuri! I typically flip my canoe upside down and tie it to a tree at night. Just in case it gets windy.
Juju. 😎😎😎. That’s what I thought. . Okk
@@kevinthewild Thanks, and safe travels on the water!!!
YES!!
all right!
@alexs3447 yeah a Kevlar bob seems perfect for Algonquin. Good to know re early morning speck fishing 👍
What was wrong with cooking and eating the Canadian white fish?
Exactly the headline I’d expect from this channel…seriously?
Seems like a good kid! Can’t wait to see him suit up…GO NOLES!
I watch Jim & Ted, Xander & Maxim Budnick, and also Justin Barbour. I always wondered if you knew them or followed them. I did not see your cameo in their video, I'm going to have to rewatch that. Love your videos Kev.👍👍👍
Thanks Dave! Yeah I watch all those guys. My cameo in Ted's most recent video is at the 2hr, 8min mark: ruclips.net/video/wiIrrplKSow/видео.htmlsi=pizvDmJLcIoHsNbw&t=7683
@kevinthewild awsome thanks Kev. Think you'll ever do a trip with them?
Just watched it, super cool. Did they know you kev?
I'm small potatoes in the RUclips world so no I don't think so 😄
@@kevinthewild😂 Maybe so - but this is the best, most authentic canoe tripping content on RUclips and it keeps getting better all the time. Keep ‘em coming, Kev. 👍
How are you navigating by map and gps or just by maps
I use a map but I also have a topographic gps map as a backup.
ok. your pancakes make me jealous. i think i need a new pan. what kind do you use?
It's the revised bugaboo pan from GSI - it now comes with a ceramic coating instead of Teflon. I'm very impressed with it so far - haven't put it in a campfire yet though.
Yes, Benadryl knocks most people out
Hi, I enjoy your blog but you really need to learn how to handle fish. Your release method sucks. If you are not keeping it don't let it flop on the rocks. Release it by holding it's tail in the water until it takes off. Other than that good luck. By the way, I'm an avid fisherman from Newfoundland
I appreciate the input/advice. I’ll put it into practice moving forward.
