Very sensible vid. I have lived in in CM since 2001 as a retired person. I lived in 4/5 places short term before I found a decent 6 month stay. Then I found a better place and by paying 1 year in advance got the rate cut from B8K to B7K / month. I got to know many Thai friends in the 2years I stayed there and when having inherited some money I let my Thai friends know I was looking to buy a cheap place under 1 million baht. A girl I knew had just completed her Masters Degree and the girl she was living with was selling her ‘Condo’. I obtained name of respected lawyer and she arraigned for me to buy my own place, very cheap back-in 2003. You will have to live and learn, Thai’s are normally good folk, but as everywhere take care, avoid any negative folk. John
Thanks for the video good information with the current conversion on the screen. Thailand its beautiful place i visit Chiang Mai Pattaya and Bangkok. Great environment. Hey i wonder if you can do a video like this in pattaya. Cheers have a great life
Great suggestions. Saved me some time thinking:). I picked Green Hill, Because it is close to MAYA and it is in walking distance of Go GYM(I am into workouts more than coworking right now:)). I like it so far. The only weird thing is the 10k rooms have a sink on a balcony:))
>the 10k rooms have a sink on a balcony That's the "kitchen", where you would wash up your plates and cutlery, it's common enough. Even places that don't have a sink installed you will probably notice if you look on the balcony there will be both a tap and a drain hole there should you want to add one.
Those are some interesting locations. Green Hill seems to have a great view of Doi Suthep. The place you live now looks like it is in the middle of the jungle! I live in Santitham at the moment, but I found seeing different parts of the city quite interesting.
Just moved to Green Hill for my first month in CM and will stay for another, but I think I can find a better apt for the same price. You're right about the retired ex-pats esp the Brits who complain constantly about how CM is not like England and how the Thais should be doing things like they do in GB. It's like living in a retirement home. I'll definitely be moving when this next month is up.
Lol, it does remind me of a retirement home actually. They have a huge pool there, I'm going to go an check it out this week. Does it get busy during the day?
The pools are not busy at all during the week. Weekends yes especially on Sunday. Let me know when you are coming and I'll hang out with you, if you want company.
Thanks for another great vlog. If you get up to doing more like this, it would be interesting to see more apartments that are good value with quick access to Nimman, but far enough off the main path that you're not paying full Nimman prices.
Does Greenhill have good windows? I always say the place would be too loud for planes when I visit the pool, unless they have extra good soundproofing. Thanks.
Thanks Brett, one of the best and most informative apartment videos I have seen thus far. Very organized! I plan on checking out the Fu Residence when I move in October, will that be high season yet? I know it gets busy in November...
Great video Brett, thanks! FU residence seems like a good starting point. Close to the center of the city etc. It looks like finding a Thai apartment via AirBnB, and then maybe discussing alternative payment with the owners might be a good idea to snag a better rate. Do most if not all of these places include free WiFi? Thanks 🙏🏼
Do you have any recommendations for finding a decent place in the ($300-$500) range for places equipped with internet modems for LAN capabilities. For my digital nomad job I can't rely on merely WiFi. I'm having trouble finding places other than AirBnB. Thanks for your time mate! Great video. Cheers!
NIce video, I will be in Chiang Mai in a couple of days for a month or so, just cant decide where to stay; Baan Thai Appartments or Huay Kaew Residence. Stayed in Huay Kaew Residence before but the pool in Baan Thai Appartments looks much bigger and nicer. I will be swimming a lot. Also the internet in Baan Thai Appartments is unknown to me. Do you know these two places and if so your thoughts please.
Lot's of good info here, thanks. I'm still wondering about internet connections though. I've heard that the best internet is found in coffee shops and coworking spaces, but did any of these places have a useful internet connection? Thanks again, Chiang Mai is looking more and more attractive.
Does it get much cheaper as you go a little north of the city ? I’m into mountain biking , will be bringing my bike with me , so may suit me to live closer to the mountain where the mtb trails are , and have a motorcycle to go into the city . Will need to do more research on that .
Green Hill has no contract. Do you have to pay one month deposit? Plus the rent? Or you just pay the one month rent? I like condo with swimming pool. Maybe you could do cheap condo with swimming pool for your next videos. Thank you.
Hi Brett thanks for the vids. Can I ask a couple of questions, feel free not answer , I’ve got a good job and good business back in UK. I’ve traveled a little to Thailand and Vietnam etc , I can’t help but love the countries and people and way of life, I’m torn between moving out and living there but I’d have no income and would be leaving my business behind . I also have thought of the option of keeping my business and maybe holidaying once a year for a few months , I’m not sure if this would work how i imagine , but maybe it would . Do you have a advice Thanks Dean
Thnx Brett for sharing those interesting informations. Is that still the place you're living in? I was told, when people stay for long time in Thailand they usually start with the very cheap Apartments / condos / what ever and the longer they're there, the better and more expensive way of accomodation they go for. Are you an exception? :) Me personally I intend to first stay in places like you show in this video during my first month. But then, depending on if my business will run like I planned, I'll go for renting a house for like 15k Bahts for the next few months. And then, still IF my business will develop as I want it, I'll go for a big house with pool for like 30 or even 60k Bahts per month. What is your way? Greetings from Switzerland.
Hey Brett, I checked out the website on khuang singh residence. They listed their rooms by night and the cheapest ones are 800 baht a NIGHT, yet you said that on 6:09 that they offer the rooms for 8000 baht a MONTH. Would you say that this info is still true?
I pay 3500 a month with air con, balcony and a great view of Doi Suthep 3 minutes to the old city, very quiet through the day and night. I was paying 13000 a month for a bighouse1 minute away and so much happier paying less. Sanititham is the best area of chiang mai and only 2 minutes to kad suan kaew mall from my apartment.
Yeah, you have to pay water and elec in every condo. Condo WiFi generally is always sketchy. A lot of condos have a fast enough connection but crap hardware that can't support multiple users. It drops out a lot. You can always have an AIS sim card in your phone as back up. In Surisuwan and Fu Residence I had a fixed line put in.
Just about all the condos advertise wifi but they all suck. It's just marketing so they can say they have free wifi. I have AiS telephone service and added a hot spot to my phone for 500 THB/mo. I run my laptop wireless off my phone hot spot. My speed tests show 4.2 down and 4.1 up. Carrying my own hot spot, I've got acceptable speed where ever I go.
Well it'' good to know you can get along without being fluent yet. I am studying Thai here but it's a lot harder to be motivated until you live there. Love your videos. It's a good use of time for me to watch you.
There is a new visa that I am going to get that is only offered in ChiangMai--a Self Defense Visa that is good for one year and is renewable four times. The only requirement is that I take self defense classes twice a week, two hours on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. They will be flexible to allow me to miss classes for travel. It comes with multiple entry documents. The company offering the classes does all the paper work and the immigration office visits. All this for only 35,000 baht a year. That covers everything--the visa costs and the self-defense course. At the end of the year, the final exam will be in a Muay Thai ring in the Old City. That last part is not true. There will be no tests and learning Thai will not be required which is with the Education Visa.
Do you speak Thai? How much Thai do you have to speak to get by in Chaing Mai? Is there enough of an English speaking community that one would not be totally isolated moving there without knowing anyone?
I speak a little Thai, you don't need to speak it in order to get by. However, I'd recommend learning as much as you can so you don't look ignorant. Especially if you're going to stay here, it'll go a long way.
Thanks for the response Brett. I was 2 years in Thailand as a teenager and had a handle on it about 18 months in country. The concern for me is my wife, who speaks English and French... but not one word of Thai. I didn't want her to feel as alienated as I did when I first got to Thailand and thought to myself "What have I done coming here?"
Very sensible vid.

Thanks Brett , excellent info, best reviews for apt.'s I have seen on youtube yet. Take care!
Those are some interesting locations. Green Hill seems to have a great view of Doi Suthep. The place you live now looks like it is in the middle of the jungle! I live in Santitham at the moment, but I found seeing different parts of the city quite interesting.
Green Hill is nice, just pricey for what you get.
Very informative video Brett. It will make my transition much smoother when I move. Cheers mate
Thanks for the comment Peter, happy to help!
Very useful tips to cover a wide range of situations!
Thanks for the comment glad you found it helpful.

Another great vlog full of good info. Thanks
Thanks for the comment.
awesome thanks for the video! would you share a video about how you find likeminded people there? thanks Brett
There are lots of meet ups in Chiang Mai. Can checkout the local Facebook groups or if your an alcoholic you can hangout at the bars. 😁
Does Greenhill have good windows? I always say the place would be too loud for planes when I visit the pool, unless they have extra good soundproofing. Thanks.

Will just be coming into the high season. Fu is a good spot.
You are the only person who converts baats to us dollars..will only watch your vids..great smooth filming

All had WiFi, Fu Residence was the worst but they let me install a fixed fibre line that I got from 3BB.
Brett Dev how much was installation and monthly service?
Usually free install and price varies depending on the package. Should be listed on the 3BB website.
Nicely ordered and presented. Thank you.
did I miss it or didn't you mention how much for last/current place?

Hello bro can you advise if grabbing an air bnb is ok to get in Chiang Mai because ive heard in Bangkok you can get shit from the building people. Thx
Looking at Khunagsingh Residence on line . I cant see any prices like the ones you have stated ? If I used Booking its over £500 a month
+LEE SHARPE prices fluctuate. May be best to go in there and pay directly
ok cheers mate
This is the sweet spot for your facial hair bro, haha. On point!

With all the apartments which one has the mountain view thanks.
Both Green Hill and Sriswan offer mountain views..
Yep, just make sure you get a room that faces the mountain lol
Everything is credit-based in the US. Is this the case abroad?

Sanititham is great has a really cool vibe about it. Really convenient location and close to the city.
what's the name of the place you stay in?
Are those monthly rates you are takling about, like 7000 baht , is that for a month?
How many of the condos had reliable internet? Were your elec/water charged desperate? Some nice places.
That's meant to say seperate not desperate.
Yeah, you have to pay water and elec in every condo. Condo WiFi generally is always sketchy. A lot of condos have a fast enough connection but crap hardware that can't support multiple users. What are the utility cost n and the internet.
Brett, I hope this isn't a dumb question but I haven't seen you talk about it. Are you fluent in Thai?
+shagwellington I am not. But I'm working on it :)
Well it'' good to know you can get along without being fluent yet. I am studying Thai here but it's a lot harder to be motivated until you live there. Love your videos. It's a good use of time for me to watch you.
how do you get paid in Thailand? would I need a local bank account or can I use my UK one?
Well done!
Does your Thai style home have air conditioning?
How are they about dogs?
how have you managed to stay for 2 years?
I'm not sure what you mean Simon? I go home every now and then and come back.
