I lived overseas for 2.5 decades. I first went to Thailand in 98. For the next 18 years I went to Thailand every year and sometimes twice. I reckon I've been there 23 times, always for at least 3 weeks. I loved walking out of the airport and getting that first smell of Thailand. The feeling that I always had was of being free, as if I had just walked out of prison. It's an amazing country . I've known at least a half-dozen friends and colleagues who have retired there (a few in Chiang Mai) and are very happy they did so.

@@Anomalyy666 It depends on where you stay. You might be able to get by in BKK, Phuket and Chiang Mai. Younger generations also now know how to speak English. However, there are less people who know how to speak English in small provinces.
Came across this video and wanted to thank you. I'm leaving the Netherlands for Thailand this December. I'm so fed up with the West and its woke bs. Don't have a business right now but am starting an online pt business next month. Hoping to make some money from that so I can stay longer. Me and my wife are going together for atleast a year. I'm 31 and I've been wanting to leave the US for a long time due to the unrest and the way it's going. but held back by family and friends and a fear of taking that leap of faith to a better free life than 9 to 5 living in my car due to inflation and cost of living. After seeing your videos I'm finally confident that I can do it even with no experience in computers or business
Maybe secure a job as Eng teacher first before you go? So, you could use it as a launching pad. I'm Thai but been living in US for the last 30 years. Lately, I've been going back to visit every year and will move back to stay after retirement. Much slower pace of life there, compared to the US.
if u go to Thailand ,,,u need health insurance, or big money saved in account. Also steady income

I followed this channel for a long time and always appreciate the straight talk. It’s because of Brett I actually saw being a digital nomad as a viable option. I saw he opened his community and after awhile I joined up and started taking his courses. So far they are great and the community is awesome. Tons of value for newbies like me by many other members along with Brett that share experience and insight about the lifestyle. I am tired of life here in the states and cannot wait to make the jump to Thailand with my Thai wife.
Curious to know what you learned from a guy who says 10 years but really it's 8, dude is let in shape than he was when he got here and from where i've seen him around town is a brokie. Like imagine claiming your a website designer but cant even design and program your own website. Brett is the kinda guy that says he doesnt pay for women yet is single and spends his nights buying himself drinks while sitting in a girly bar seeking validation from anyone that may recognize him. Anywhere else in the world you'd call this kinda guy a loser.

Thanks for the video Brett. (Liked and Subscribed) It checks out. ~17% of adults in UK suffer from depression. That is a lot! Believe it or not, the rate in my country (USA) is about the same at ~18% The rate in Thailand is only ~2%. I went there for personal enjoyment. But I quickly loved the place because ALL the people are SO sincerely warm and friendly. The other thing that positively struck me was that this was the first non-Christian country I had ever visited. It was really enlightening (no pun intended) to have some insight into how religious indoctrination is so embedded in how we think, act, interact and view the world. Good luck!
I have heard some of that but it was concentrated in certain cities. So, hence people were taking advantage of remote work (work from home) and moved out to the rural areas. A relative is raising a few dozen chickens and working from home in healthcare. (hates even going into the city now when it is rarely required by work)
Hey Brett, love the channel. I'm finally living in Chiang Mai. I'm giving it a trial run until the Burning Season in March when I'll head to the south of the country. I'll be strongly considering another year as I've really enjoyed my time here so far.

I have lived in Chiang Mai last 15 months (Nimman). Everything is great except the burning season this year was unbearable.

Just got to Chiang Mai a week ago. Here for at least a year to try it out. Remaining flexible and looking for opportunities. Cost of living in Thailand allows for me to take risks and explore different things. Watched some of your videos before I came for some research. Thanks for the content.

Enjoyed that one Brett and I totally agree, every 'big' move in life requires an initial leap of faith. The truth is that the perfect time to do something rarely exists. That house you want to buy will always be priced just a little bit more than you think you can afford.

I can’t disagree with you Brett. As a Thai living in California for 40 years I understand how you felt before moving to Thailand. The high stress of living in the West takes so much life from you daily; but in Thailand you feel much freer. I hope you and your nomad community survives and thrives in Thailand and become self sufficient and prosperous real soon! Cheers.
@jimjanlekha891- I am a Thai-American who has lived in SoCal for 53 years since the age of 2. I'm planning to move to Thailand for retirement. I love and appreciate my adopted country for the opportunities that it has afforded me but Thailand has the lifestyle I am looking for in the second half of my life. Thailand has a sense of community and more concern for one another compared to the US. Unfortunately, the US is becoming more and more divisive and increasingly unsafe. I'm glad I never gave up my Thai citizenship after becoming a US citizen!

@@jimjanlekha891- I'm in the Inland Empire near Ontario. I'm planning to retire early before the age of 60 because I'm done with the "high-stress living in the West that takes from your life daily!" I'm in search of a much calmer and more peaceful existence in a village-like community. We live in California, a state with approximately 40 million people but I often feel lonely. I live in a nice community but I hardly know my neighbors and they have not made any effort to know me. The cost of living here has risen where cost of food has doubled! Crime has also risen. Every day you see grab-and-dash shoplifting on TV and in Northern California, you see thieves break into cars with impunity! Our government is more concerned about impeaching one another than passing sensible laws to benefit Americans. Every month there is a mass shooting somewhere in the country but no one is doing anything about it. Last Memorial Day 2023, I was involved in a mass shooting scare at Ontario Mills Shopping Mall. While I was hiding in a storeroom at a retail store inside the mall waiting to possibly be shot and killed by a gunman, I solidified my decision to move to Thailand to live out the rest of my life if I survive this incident. Fortunately, it was a false alarm but I realized that this was the NEW NORMAL in the US. You are no longer safe anywhere; not at church, school, theaters, malls, airports, grocery stores, concerts..etc. Since I left Thailand at the age of 2, I've been back 6 times, my most recent visit was for one month last April 2023. That last trip really opened my eyes to the possibility of living there permanently! I was amazed at how modern Thailand has become and how much cheaper things cost compared to the US. The most amazing thing was how Thai people were so genuine and nice! I was impressed by how everyone wanted to take care of me and how complete strangers treated me like family! Thai people enjoy giving but don't want anything in return! Everyone seemed happy even though they were poor and didn't have much. I felt safer in Bangkok than in SoCal! With my retirement income, I could live like a KING in Thailand. The cost of living in Thailand is 45% cheaper compared to the US! That means my $3K-$5K retirement budget in Thailand is equivalent to nearly $6K-$10K in the US. Actually, I can live comfortably in Bangkok with only $2K per month. This covers my living expenses and a monthly travel budget as well! I am returning to Thailand in November 2023 for one month. I will be scouting out sites for my eventual retirement. Although Bangkok is nice, I am looking for someplace a bit calmer like Hua Hin or Prachuap Kiri Khan or Cha Am. Sorry for the long story but these are my "notes".
I am on the same boat... Thai/Canadian who is thinking of moving back to Thailand but still worry about what to do for living and not only staying home...( which is unhealthy )
@@Timmy9340 - How far away from retirement? Are you a Thai citizen who is able to work in Thailand? I believe that you can live in Thailand with $1500 USD ($2036 CAD) somewhat comfortably. Here is the breakdown based on my research: $400 rent-$70 electric-$6 water-$20 mobile plan-$15 wifi-$400 3 meals per day-$50 snacks at home-$50 shopping-$100 unexpected expenses-$50 public transportation-$100 entertainment-$200 travel or date night =$1,411 USD ($1915 CAD) expense total. Keep in mind, you'd have more or less depending on your spending habits but $1500 USD is doable!

You can get a tourist visa and get it renewed every 2 months or so. If you want something more stable you can get a retirement visa, it costs $35-40,000 in a Thai bank or $3,000/month income. What I do is use a visa agency and it takes care of everything for about $700 a year. They also do the 90 day report, which is a pain in the ass

Mate; this video resonated with me so much. Iv always floated along miserable in the UK. Iv been in Chiang mai myself for the last 5 months and love it. Iv been doing it on savings, but am desperate to find remote work and continue living the good life. I don’t come from a tech background and am clueless on how to find remote work. I've been going to Thailand for 22 years (1996 - 2018). Always thought I should and could live there. But what to do there? That has always been my problem. I didn't have the balls and/or knowledge to stay there. In 2018 I got absolutely fed up with being the tourist in Pattaya and other red light districts (Oh yes, that's where I easily end up, unattended! 55555). Even when I had a great time, and zero problems with girls or thais in general. Love the people!

From India here... even after so many years of life.. i still feel a lot of things exciting, I'm driven, fine simple things exciting!! I have visited Thailand many times and will definitely keep in visiting again and again... but as a tourist!! Never as a digital nomad, not my cup of tea!
Love your content and story. I've considered Chang Mai. Only hesitation is the annual burning season. Is the air population really bad during that time or it's bearable and people just deal with it?
Go south to PKK during that time of year ,it is like Chiengmai,cost of living much cheaper than Phuket or Samui.
Can you do a video regarding the transition to digital nomads, for people that didnt worked in Hi tech or the digital world. for exapmle - came from the hotels industry in their own countries.

Thanks for this Brett. Totally understand your choice of Chiang Mai. I stay there for two weeks a few weeks ago. It's like a big country town with many universities and subsequently many university students. People are very friendly and they have a strong sporting community including rugby union.

You can be happy in the UK too, it's not fun here but build a business to get away from 20K salarys, Keep it as a hub where your fam and clients are and then travel around Europe, Middle East and Asia. I think Thailand can also be as alienating as UK and if you don't eventually get married there isn't really any legal way to remote work long term even with elite from my understanding. I like UK central location which makes it a great base. Correct me if I'm wrong tho

It looks like you didn’t travel a lot. I wonder how Chiangmai can be the easiest world city 😅😂 But with 12-15k for a year it is a pretty poor life, you probably need to save 20-25k minimum to have a normal life in Thailand
