My wife who is originally from Thailand built our home in Northeast part and in that region it doesn’t take much to have a less stressful life compared to the states
Reasonable budget for Chiang Mai and most parts of Thailand except Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya and touristic areas. It is not budget prevents people from moving, it is the fear.
$1000 is actually too much, I struggled to blow more than $700 When I lived for a month in Chiang Mai. I finally decided to relocated to Thailand on the second of April. Thank you Brett
What visa are you getting? I know the STV visa is 9 months but you are required to leave. I truly want to live in thailand for at least a few years but there are no visas that last that long and don't have strict requirements. I'd like to move around but having an education visa requires you to go to class in one city.
Excellent advice. I kept myself from moving there in 2007 cause kids back home. Later remarried someone who holding back my freedom...we all have choices even with covid, rest is just excuses. Point is its possible if you really want it. Like me, just have to do it. CHANGE is scarry yes. Work from home? That can be anywhere. Lower cost to live allows to save for travel and retire earlier. Thanks for video, cheers!
I'm 24, Scottish, I speak Thai fluently, have a Thai fiance and we travelled around Thailand around 4 months ago, but I can see why it's hard to move to Thailand. It's so money orientated, Thailand wants your money but they don't want you is what I take from their visas and restrictions on foreigners buying property.
I am a single man who lives in a major city in the southwest part of the USA. It is very difficult for me to spend over $1500 per month. My car is paid for and l have a 1 bedroom apartment, thats not in the slums. Don't eat out much and l have a few women who spend a little time with me every month. I barely drink any alcohol and l will attend live events that I like. If I can spend less than $1500 in the USA, should easily be able to live off that amount or less in Thailand.
I'm sure $1000 per month will serve you well but it's also true (and you do mention it) that one needs to live a sensible life also. For my part, I lived in Spain for 3.5 years with about €1500 each month. That's fine but it did spiral quickly out of control at times. And you have to take into account non-daily expenses. Insurance. Health. Things going wrong. Stuff you have to buy. Buffer. Visa runs. If you DO plan on living on $1000 per month in Thailand then make very sure that you've got the basics covered and make sure that you've got a buffer that you don't touch at all unless you really need it one day. If something happens and/or you suddenly need a good chunk of cash and you don't have it then you can find yourself in real trouble very fast. Best of luck to all adventurers out there.
Make a plan. Set a date. Then mini-goals. Then just DO IT. I am saving X dollars each week, automatically, in preparation for the move back to Thailand. If a widow can do this (time number two), anyone can do it. If you get there and don't like it, book your flight and come back home. No worries!
I got a noisy bird too. Freakin PITA. I'm told Thais call it a "Nok Ka Wow". See my channel on YT at (t5taxi) for a 06:30am film I did about it recently.
I love the bird's call, as it reminds me I moved my life to somewhere amazing with a warm climate, and am no longer stuck in a cold and miserable country.
When Brett talks about how easy it is to just move and get a client then move to Thailand, and I am just watching from my country with tears in my eyes because our economy is literally fucked and monthly salaries are almost around $300 right now, it helps makes me dream and have hopes. I wish I can do this today, I'll probably try my best soon to start planning it... first step, get a job online.
Good points. As someone who has worked as an ex-pat full-time freelancer for 13 years now, you can definitely make an average of 1K per month if you stay focused, but the problem with Thailand is not just the rent and living expenses; it's the damn VISA. If you're on an ED visa, you're gonna spend about 50K baht per year. Another potential dealbreaker for many (myself included) is the fact that it seems you now need insurance just to get an extension (you need to extend your ED visa every three months even if you make a 1-year deal with a school), frequent policy changes and new restrictions notwithstanding. Would be nice if someone has found a solution to this for Chiangmai (or other areas). Thai laws literally change on a weekly basis and are often confusing and disjointed. Basically, if you're from a western country, probably not a good idea to set your mind on staying there for the next 20 years, unless you've found some kind of visa deal I haven't heard of (unlikely), or are willing to spend 30K USD on the Thail Elite visa (20 years) or 18K for 5 years (going up to 20K next year). Then of course there's marriage, but that comes with it's own risks I guess. Basically, China is gaining a stronger and stronger foothold in the Thai gov, and they clearly DO NOT want westerner's there anymore. So unless you have a minimum of 16K to stay there for 5 years, or are married, visa is going to be a headache. Btw, even the O-type (retirement) visa has just become a LOT more restrictive and many retirees are leaving for the Phillipines due to the new financial and insurance restrictions. Good luck guys.
I’m glad you added this vital information. I was on the verge of packing a bag and booking a flight. You’ve probably just saved a few people from getting themselves into trouble.
Good to see you back Brett! I think you're absolutely right. Some people want to bubblewrap themselves and try to think of every possible disaster that could befall them (thought the 3 motorbikes at once never crossed my mind! 🤣). But the end result of all that over thinking is paralysis; they end up doing nothing. I moved here July 2019, and I've not looked back. I sold or donated all my stuff and came here with three suitcases and a backpack at 57 yo. Divorce was my motivator for the changer of pace. I read a couple of comments about visas, and it might be good for you to revisit that issue some time. It is a pretty fluid situation on that front here in Thailand. I'm on a retirement visa, and so far so good. Cheers!

I know how you are speculating why others don't go for it, but you need to consider how much it costs to get started, too. Flights, visas, deposits for housing, etc. are limiting factors, too. And I'm sure that if you can do it on $1k per month, I can too. The fact that many of us would willingly leave tomorrow if not for debt, leases, car payments, insurances, storage and having an extra $5k-$7k to get it going. Essentially it is all about planning properly and making your actions count- getting all of your ducks in a row and keeping them there. Once you take the leap you'll see it's no big deal and worth every moment if you listen to those out there pointing the way. Thanks Brett. We all can and do learn a lot from this channel. Happy travels all.
Been watching your videos on and off for the past 2 years. I love the way you explain things. Very thorough and realistic. Funny at times, but in a good way! Looking forward to more of your videos. Great informative content!

I’m intending to teach English inThailand in 3 month stints while I wrap up my business in the states, maybe for the next 9 to 15 months. I’m semi retired currently teaching private guitar lessons and substitute teaching band classes for kids K-8. I’m also a talented musician (Electric blues and acoustic) who enjoys playing out a couple times a month. Is there opportunity in Bangkok or Chiang Mai to continue to play/practice my musical performance. Also I golf. I never see any folks talking about pursuing outside interests or continuing hobbies after moving to Thailand. Your thoughts?
Thank you for sharing, I found your information very informative. I am an American laying the ground work for making that move to Thailand and bringing my consulting business with me. Currently gathering all the information that I can.
Hello I had a question , how where you able to stay there for so long ? I’m from USA and plan to move to Thailand in a few years , and everything I see about visa is like 90 days
I want to move there, permanently with my 2 kids. They are 15 & 16 years old. I want to take them out of school and have them do online school to finish their high school education. (We are Canadian) If it weren’t for them I would already be there. But what’s your opinion on teens living in Thailand? (I work remotely & make $60k/yr)
I never thought it was hard to move to Thailand, at least any other year. The pandemic has changed everything though, and a lot of countries are closed to tourists until mass vaccination is in place. Maybe by the end of 2021
opposite of me, I randomly got stuck in Vietnam 2019 December when the bug came, luckiest shit ever. Never made so much money after taxes/expenses ever. I don't wanna leave.I use less then 1/3 of my salary and live great a good life! :)
@@andreasrnning2339 Damn man I was in the same situation as you but in Chiang when the bug hit last March. But I decided to come back to Australia on the last minute, before I got stuck there. Part of me stills regrets that I came back lol
I'm from the UK also and planning to move to Bangkok this October but my main concern and stress is over what visa to get. Just seems like a money trap or complete stress that's always going to tie me down somewhere also with the risk of not getting renewed
Some great points here brother. Wish I had moved to Thailand as I planned, would’ve been saving 3-4k a month on living expenses and wouldve had a lot more to reinvest and scale my business.
Ive been to thailand 7 times now. I kived in chiang mai for a year in 2015 after being let go from teaching position i never obtained. Im definitely working on getting back but still stumbling around on a few things

Sounds like I already have the money to not work for 2-3 years (obviously I will work, man's not lazy) just need to sell the house and car to take the plunge. Exciting af
Health Insurance, visa fee, condo i guess 18000 baht, wi fi, money on account. I think impossible to live under 45000 baht in Thailand. If want same standard as in Sweden. Not everyone can eat seafood and fried food on those cheap places without to get sick.
@@brett_dev Why? I been in Thailand 6 times 30 days each. And ask other farang who live there about cost to live in Pattaya or Phuket. They say around 40000 bath and up. Condo living room, bedroom and kitchen 18000 bath include gym and wi fi. Visa fee and health insurance 10000 bath/month if you are 60 and up. Weather is good for me there but food not so easy if i am outside of tourist are. My friends manage to eat everything there but not manage heat there opposite to me. I like beach so north Thailand is not for me. Maybe cost is different to south and north i not know. Sorry for my bad English

really good content bro and very honest. Im currently building a UK business along side this youtube channel which with 5,000 subs earns me 800$ passive atm as well as a patreon and other side hustles.
The monthly expenditure isn't my concern. It's having enough money in the bank for a long term visa. My monthly income satisfies the requirement. Don't they want you to be able to show $10,000 in a bank account? Or do you just have to prove income? Thx
My partner is a blue collar worker, he owns and runs a gardening business and I am studying to be a garden designer. How could we use our skills abroad in Thailand? I understand how people work when it’s internet based but what about when it’s labour?
@@brett_dev ear plugs. Though if you use them, you'll need to use waxsol or something regularly to prevent a very bad buildup of wax in your ears that will get stuck to your eardrums in due time. This is so helpful. Thank you so much. I’m so fed up being so tired after working 40+ plus hours a week and never having time to do things I love. I’m going to make the move! I love Scotland but until I earn a higher salary life just isn’t happy. But even when I picture myself earning more that still come with working more so the cycle doesn’t end.
How to get the least expensive health insurance? The consulate states expats living there must have health care coverage. Pacific Prime and Cross are less until elderly years (after 75) then takes closer to 1000.
Please tell me the name of that bird, someone! Been trying to find out for what seems forever… I can always hear it when in Thailand, but never see it 😊
My fear is losing clients, I got a few thousand per month from web dev freelancing and 100K savings & investments but don't know if it's worth going for long stay, only went Chiang Mai 6 months before. Also I'd have to work 5pm to 10pm to align with UK clients, you think that's alright? I'm also 24 so thinking about their buying a flat or doing this
If you had £100,000 there are investment trusts paying 6%. Now you're taking a chance. The world's on its arse, and it could get worse. They might not be able to keep paying the dividends. But then again, there's a very good chance they can. Exchange rates could move against you. But they're more likely to help you. £6,000 a year is 20,000 baht a month. That would take all the pressure off, because 6,000 total housing costs, 400 baht a day for food, and a gym membership, is there without doing any work at all. I lived on £324 for six weeks no problem. But I found that I can't relax!
Your discussion in this video describes me VERY accurately... Previously an environmental professional, retired from a government agency with modest pension -- have since worked for a non-profit and dabbled a LITTLE in consulting... but never really was self-sufficient as a free-lancer. With that, my question: While the ability to make some supplemental income interests me... ... I'm also interested in how I might simply be useful -- to CONTRIBUTE to the community in ways other than just being another drop in the bucket for the tourist economy. Especially as so many Thai people are struggling to get back on their feet due to the Covid pandemic. I've got some professional skills (land & resource conservation, document composition & editing, etc.) and don't mind getting my hands dirty in construction, maintenance, etc. Among other roles, I was a wildland firefighter for 34 seasons. So, is there an opportunity for a farang like me to be a useful contributing member of Thai society -- with something other than his pocketbook?
there are envrironmental jobs in thailand but firefighting experperince I do not think is relvant to this type of work. Not sure how much other work exp you have. I might try and take a crack at this type of work see if i get anywhere
Brett, I’d love to hear about your sales funnel since you live in another then where your clients live. How do you service your clients with your current time zone and how do you consistently get business?
This is great Brett. So I could come if I quarantine in some hotel for two weeks? I have been vaccinated with the Pfizer Covid series. Do they take that into account?

Thanks. Planning to roll the dice once the boarders open. About to start a second website to diversify from the technical issues that pop up from time to time. Cant wait.
It's hard to imagine how much I could earn online. Now I am working 40 hours a week, working online besides. But I am tired after a day's work. Could I work for 20 hours online? We will never know till I do it. Inspirational video Brett. Cheers.
I thanks so much because I’m thinking of going to Thailand and change my life.
I don't know why, but this is probably my favorite video you ever made.
Which visa did you get then mate?
Your attitude and work ethic is first class sadly people are in their comfort zone and never move out of it
Some great points here brother.
Thanks bro
Needed to hear this. Got the chance to reset my life. Wanted to live in thailand for rhe last decade. Was stuck in the race. Hearing thisni know its possible.
Your better off staying in Sweden bro.
I plan on moving an hour away from Chiang Mai, no clue about this client stuff but would love to come visit you and learn! I would most likely just outsource the jobs lol
Im retired living in Florida, I hate it ! Want to move to Thailand and retire , my income monthly is about 5 grand, think I could make it in Thailand on my retirement?
I’m a piano tuner in Vegas and was thinking about moving to Thailand and just flying back every now and then to take care of my customers.
Yea 15 years in same job definitely missable been back and forward to Thailand this 6 years , still in 30s , great bit of advice pal 🙏👍just need be bit better wit online stuff
really good content bro and very honest. I live in the south of the UK after living in Australia and fins it almost impossible to live where a small flat would cost you £800 a month not including bills. Im currently building a UK business along side this youtube channel which with 5,000 subs earns me 800$ passive atm as well as a patreon and other side hustles.
Keep it up
Consistently the best advice giver for Thailand imo.
So do you have to pay any taxes in Thailand?
My biggest hurdle is sifting thru the bs on a pathway down the life of working online successfully.
None of the links work I’ve been trying to reach out to you
What type of place are you renting? You said house. How much?
I remember living in Thailand and hearing that bird at 0:17 every morning and sometimes during the day too lol
My only issue is to find a job to do.
Dont want to work online.
The monthly expenditure isn't my concern. It's having enough money in the bank for a long term visa. My monthly income satisfies the requirement. Don't they want you to be able to show $10,000 in a bank account? Or do you just have to prove income? Thx
I'm single and cant wait to move to thailand omg
My partner is a blue collar worker, he owns and runs a gardening business and I am studying to be a garden designer. How could we use our skills abroad in Thailand? I understand how people work when it’s internet based but what about when it’s labour?
Can hear a mynor bird in the background ,I so miss that sound. Alan
He is the reason I look exhausted in this video, woke me up at 7am! Do you know how to get rid of them?
@@brett_dev Just be grateful that they even woke you up in the first place
@@brett_dev ear plugs. Though if you use them, you'll need to use waxsol or something regularly to prevent a very bad buildup of wax in your ears that will get stuck to your eardrums in due time. Then it's another medical headache to sort out. That's what I do now. Living in suburbia with cars and trucks and motorbikes and birds and people in general... Its impossible to stop the world around you, so earplugs it is.
@@brett_dev you can stop them from waking you up, in the same way that you are coaching people in this vlog. You need to change your mind set to one where you think how lucky you are to be able to hear this bird. However, I wish I could apply this way of thinking to the mosquitos and sand flies. cheers
@@brett_dev Look into buying a motion activated anti bird water sprayer . When a bird comes near it targets a stream of water towards it and then shuts down after the squirt .
I’m moving to Thailand next year to teach.
Would love to work online, but I have no idea where/how to start to even get that one client - it’s rocket science for me 😫
This is so helpful.
Thank you for this video... I am fearful of things not working out especially with visas etc but this video gives me more hope it will work out.
I would love to do this I just don't know how to get onto the Internet and work for myself.
How to get the least expensive health insurance? The consulate states expats living there must have health care coverage. Pacific Prime and Cross are less until elderly years (after 75) then takes closer to 1000.
Great video ! What if i am not familiar with making money online ? I never had a job online and dont know how and where to start. Lol
Great video mate, what are you main sources of attracting clients?
Thanks Brett for the free class. I’m a new subscriber, absolutely love your content.
You’re quite cool mate. Right you are. Its simple. Take a step
Please tell me the name of that bird, someone! Been trying to find out for what seems forever… I can always hear it when in Thailand, but never see it 😊
Very good video thanks
Hi Bruv, a good informative video hopefully it will take away some fears for people. Take care GOD Bless you and yours. M
With that, my question:
While the ability to make some supplemental income interests me...
Great video Brett ,just a quick question, how much is your health insurance and does it cover covid
Your amazing bro, thank you, what’s the best place in Thailand tho to move to?
I would love to learn more about how you did it. I can only seam to watch 1 of the other videos
If you fly in and stay at a quarantine hotel, then after 90 days do a visa run, when you come back, do you have to do the quarantine hotel again?
I want to do this,but don’t understand what 1 client means,,what am I doing,for the client
DIFFERENT FOR EACH CLIENT
Brett, I’d love to hear about your sales funnel since you live in another then where your clients live.
How do you service your clients with your current time zone and how do you consistently get business?
Simply forget about normal bed times and regular 8 hour days with commutes.
What does it cost for a night of going out drinking for 3-4 hours with friends? I may want to do that more than once a week.
I'm soon to be single and looking forward to retiring somewhere in Thailand. Thanks for the info.
This is great Brett. So I could come if I quarantine in some hotel for two weeks? I have been vaccinated with the Pfizer Covid series. Do they take that into account?
Good advise.. I WAS coming but just started a 5 month dental implant process.. so delayed until August. Curtis in Las Vegas
I'd be pressed to spend 20k! And I like beers a couple nights a week and eat out every day and accommodation.
Nice one Bret. Positivity is key...
I work online, my question is how do I get a long term visa?
elite visa
Just came across you, video just what I needed, I’ve decided to move to Thailand and your info has really helped , straight to the point lol , thank you x
Hi Brett, You mentioned that your with the misses, not trying to be smart or anything but doubling it to 2 thousand is correct?
Definitely, you can even live in Phuket on $1000 a month, it’s all about not going over board with your spending and cook at home haha.
I'm ready to move over as soon as the pandemic is over. Is it hard to come over on a tourist visa and then just stay for good and go through the application process while on tourist visa?
What about the visa ? heard it s difficult
What kind of travel/medical insurance do you have?
