Expats who choose to travel abroad or live in Thailand do so for many different reasons...
The low cost of living in Thailand puts expats at a massive economic advantage and because of this many choose to seize that opportunity, start businesses online and dramatically improve their standard of living.
But not every expat is living the dream...
Many expats who live in Thailand struggle to make an income for many years (sometimes decades) and eventually return back to their home countries even worse off than when they arrived.
The successful digital nomads and expats that I have met in Thailand have not been successful for no reason.
They all share a similar backstory and they all did certain things that contributed towards their success as expats living in Thailand.
In this video, I talk about what I feel are some of the major differences between the expats who make it and those who don't.
#digitalnomad #expat #thailand
Your reaction to that noisy bird cracks me up every time. 😆
That is the wisest nomad advice I've ever heard. You truly nailed it. Practical honesty: Few things are more valuable in this life.
Been living in Chiang Mai for 6 years haven't attended a single nomad meetup and living on a 20-year elite visa.
Best advice keep it simple, don't brag to your friends, and be careful who you surround yourself with :)
You'll get the standard 30 days entry depending on where you're from but getting a visa ain't gonna happen with a criminal record. I think....
@@brendangoodbrand2597 It's worth doing your research but Thailand is renowned for being a bureaucratic nightmare and criminal record will not help. Even something minor like a DUI will scupper your chances of ever retiring there but good luck whatever you do!
@@brendangoodbrand2597 Depends on the offense. If it's a felony charge then probably not. If it's a minor charge you can probably get away with it. My advice would be to submit an application and if you get approved you'll have 3 months to pay.
@@ChessmasterHex The criminal record thing is wrong. I have and still do know dozens of Poms and Ozzies living in Thailand, but have a record back home! I have been coming to Thailand over 30 yrs and never been asked or checked for any criminal record👍🏻
@@mikimoto99 I think he is referring to the elite visa. (Since that's what he said he has)
After 5 years of online work with a company, I decided to come for holiday to Thailand and meet with my business partner and his family. It was in 2018. I am still here today.
My best advice is have your online business settled before you go.
I'm earning about $1600-$2200/month passively, I will move to Thailand in 3-5 months I will have no problem living in Thailand.
If you build your business in Thailand even with a big buffer if your not careful with your spending you can lose your money and be stressed, at least have something established before you move
What do you do for business?
Please share an update how did it go :)
And this is why I'm in Thailand, focusing on growing my RUclips channel and website. If you come here well prepared, have investments, have a plan, you can do really well for yourself.
Like what kind of investments in doing my calculations is 50k usd enough
Excellent once again Brett! You have the most informative videos on Thailand and Digital Nomads lifestyle on RUclips.
The big difference is that successful ex-pats have planed well and made their money before they even decide to live in Thailand. We maximize our best money making years in our home countries , invest well so that when we come to Thailand to live out our dream life money is the least of our problems!! Once here we continue to invest (not in Thai ventures which is usually a losing proposition) we don’t rest on our laurels but enjoy them👍👍 Young guys today don’t seem to have financial discipline. They want it all easily and yesterday🥴🥴🥴🥴
.
I definitely agree and will do that in march thanks bro I've been following your videos for more than 4 years and your advices make a lot of sense you have a big brain
Loved how you patiently wait for the bird to finish its mating call before continuing. like a teacher waiting fo his class to quiet down
I have made that mistake coming to Thailand. Going from one bad job to the other. Then I realized that being an entrepreneur I could make much more money so I stopped working altogether and started building a skillset. It was very hard but now I make much more money than before. 10 years in Thailand already
Hi Alex. What kind of skillset did you build and how did that align with your goals?
Always interesting and entertaining.. thanks Brett 👍😊
The bird is climaxing 🤣🤣🤣
This helped ease my Monday morning (first day back to work after Chinese new year) depression! Thanks! I'm planning a move to Thailand for a fresh start after struggling in Cambodia for 10 years. This video is a positivity boost.
Great videos you make! And that bird really is the cherry on top!
Love how the algorithm sent you to me. Great tips on your channel.
Good video, Thanks.
Great advice, totally agree that it's best to focus on one thing rather than "flip flopping".
Brett, have you done a vlog about Thailand's medical services? I have lived and worked in a lot of places and Thailand has the best and most affordable medical services by miles. Thais can register for medical with a one time 30 Bhatt ($1) fee. Then get free hospital treatment. In the US a visit to the ER where I did not get treated, one time was billed at nearly $6,000. The ER was too busy to treat me so the bill was for the privilege of triage and waiting four hours while really sick and a 104F temperature. In the UK when I had to go to the ER, they put me on a trolley and left me to die. They seemed annoyed that I lived, and that was only because the wife at the time turned up and although she hated me she wanted the income to continue - true. In Thailand I had the same issue as in the US - this is all over like 20 years so I don't keep getting sick).
My Thai wife took me to the hospital where I was seen immediately, got diagnosed, x-rayed all sorts of tests, and medication. I am almost recovered by the time I got out the treatment was so good. Billed about $150. Yes one hundred and fifty dollars.
That said you are in no rush to get out of a Thai hospital, the nurses are gorgeous.
Retired here and love it.
I'd love to hear more about how you do it!
"They seemed annoyed that I lived".....Priceless!
I learned this lesson too. Specialize in a simple product line. I did mens t-shirts, choice of regular t-shirt or jersey.
Been hustling my butt off for the last 40 years in the USA and after that many Middle East countries. Going to be settling down in Phethcabun Province in the next year living off of pensions and investments. My Thai wife to be also has a few businesses that bring in some money. My advice to the younger men out there....."Hustle and invest wisely young man, hustle and invest wisely".
Yes sir! 25yo here
That's so funny how that bird always stops you in your steps. I like him.
I love that bird to !!!! Hhhhha
Great vid bud ! I'm considering retiring out there and not for all the wrong reasons 😃😃
Brett never disappoints. Greetings from Manchester.
Brilliant message!
I think it's important that entrepreneurs leverage the West. You need to run the business in a place like Thailand, but have users and clients in 1st world countries like the U.S., UK, and Australia.
Ya think?
I am going to be 60 years old in July and all I am waiting for is for the restrictions to be lifted so that I can travel. I will be coming to Thailand but with enough income so that I don't have to work. I have made my money working40 years and I intend not to work again other than on my investments. You guys are young and all that you say is true.
If my son decides to live with me then I might look at a business for him to keep him busy. So it would not be a business that has to make a lot of money. One that will pay for itself will do fine. I intend to do charity work as I am involved in some Thai charities already to keep me occupied. Great content Brett. Take care. GOD Bless you and yours. M
do you need a work permit for Thai charity work?
Only restrictions is 2 days quarantine brother.
Hi Brett, Great video again! I was thinking of being a surf instructor. Maybe it's a pretty wrong idea, haha!! Cheers
That bird... It's insane how long it has stuck around.
Hahaha, mate you just made my evening when you paused for that bird to stop making noises 😂
Hi, I've my regular job in my country and I also have my small online business. I've been living in Thailand for more than a year, besides traveling a lot. I was planning to leave my job in Spain and come back to live in Thailand, but in two years the world has changed and I think now is a great opportunity to come back to live in Thailand and work online. And also, luckily, I have the possibility to work in a company in Bangkok as a graphic and web designer. I think I have the knowledge, experience, skills and passion to be able to make money with my business. I just have to take the step, your videos and your insight of expats living in Thailand help me a lot. I hope that in a few weeks I can start my new life adventure.
Success, as you say, demands a level of dedication.
I love that bird!
They are also loving what they do or they have turned a hobby into a business I bet. Everything you said there is so true. In my 30's and 40's I worked a lot of long hours. I even turned my 3rd car garage into an office.
The bird is the second star of the show lol , great info Dev.
I LOVE that bird chirping in the background. haha
Great video Brett! Can relate to what you’re mentioning! Focus is the name of the game! I can’t wait to get back to Asia and Thailand! I’m spending or rather burning about 2-3K month here without leaving the house while freezing my ass off! I’m out the door ASAP!
Can you do a video on long term visas please? Are the 1 year Muay Thai or Thai language visas still offered nowadays? Thanks man!
P. S. That bird is becoming kinda like your mascot! 😜🤣 It’s so annoyingly cute! 🤣🤣
I wanna focus on my Art and create a business with it! Ugh such good advice
Lol that Storm Bird picks on you :-)
Well, that’s the best deal: earning in strong currencies and spending in weak ones! I might need to become an expat in my own country lol 😅
I am checking in here just for “the bird.” Absolute gems.
Always great content. Dropping some luv and respect for you so the YT algo can wake its ass up
3:47 LMAO
How are you Brett staying in Thailand for soo long? What visa are you on?
I smashed the like button now where is my money 😂😂. i could imagine just how much time and effort it would take to make a good living in Thailand or enough money to not have to count every baht. good things come to those that put the hard work in. Great video Brett thanks for the advice hopefully see you soon. stay safe mate
Not for me, I'm set where I am, but very interesting content. Something different. A different way for me to ponder Thailand. And I've been going for 40 years. Thanks.
My plan is to start remoting from TH as my line of work allows for that sort of work -- system integration and cloud. Already have a house, married to a Thai lady, living rent free out in a small village outside CM. When son is old enough, I can retire to CM.
We want to boo around and see the world. I work in insurance and partner will be doing mental health counseling virtually. The low COL is drawing us in. So we have a 5 year plan. Great advice
Hi there
Just come across your channel yes you are right you need to concentrate on one thing and one thing only to be successful,
I think that's as good advise as your gonna get no matter what you do or where you live
I was famous, by accident, long ago. I was offered so many free things, just to have me endorse them, take a pic…etc.
Glad I am not “rich” lol.
I am retired, and 66, BUT, I have reasons for needing a year or so of totally free time.
Love your honesty and clear info!
I have just started an Affiliate Marketing business and will wait until the income is sufficient before making my move. I have a cousin in Pattaya who married a local and has lived there for the last 35 years.
I'm currently working online.. In cust care,, do you think its a good idea to take it over there? I've lived in pattaya for 5mnths and rayong for another 5 after, then had to move home and covid hit,, thoughts please as I'm gone nervous about it!
Stops and lets the bird sing her song - well played, sir :)
I want to come to retire, but I'm an entreprenuer at heart, so after 6 months when the honeymoon wears off, I'll be looking for something to do
Hahah that pause for the bird
Hi Brett, great channel with great content and very informative which is why i like watching your streams when they come, there's never enough of them though 😂. My plan is to hopefully move to Thailand within the next two possibly 3 years (or sooner finance allowing ) and i will fund myself for the first 2 years from UK income/houser rental which will allow me time to blend in to the Thai culture (all being good and well of course). If all goes to plan i may even start my own you tube channel (just kidding :)....I also hope to meet up with you for a coffee and chat when i get there 😎... Keep up the good work!
These vids wouldnt be the same without an appearance by Bretts 🐦 ! All i seen today are pigeons and starlings mate ! 😛
Man that bird was going for it lol. How neat !!! Dam bro if I come to Thailand working is the last thing on my mind. Eat, swim and drink beer. Repeat the next day.
Well said Brett, I love Thailand and the people. I have worked all over Thailand in both Power & Oil as an International contractor from the UK. I also have a Lady in Sakon Nakhon but I have not seen her since 2019 due to the recent worldwide situation, although I hope to return later this year. I agree with you 100% that the UK is now a control of the population country. Hopefully I will retire in Thailand.
All countries are control the population. We are in a global communist takeover.
the UK population looks out of control so what gives?
while working on building the online business, how do they manage to stay in thailand for a longer period of time?
Elite or marriage visa. Not much other option for under 50.
What is the best area to live in Chiang Mai? I'm shifting this September. Damn excited.
What is the covid situation like? I Don't want to come back if I have to wear a mask. Is it required and enforced?
That bird is the koel. We get them here in Sydney from September to February. So annoying. It goes on and and on and they start sometimes at 3 in the morning.
Hi Brett,Where was the Condo near you that accepted pets ?I.e. dogs?Sorry I can’t remember the name.Cheers Sean
What Visa are you on? to be able to stay long term?
What is a low income living per month? $1000 USD?
I’m coming to Thailand to start a new life. Have a decent amount of savings and a property to rent out and have recently become interested in an e commerce store such as drop shipping in order to find a decent product for branding. I know the market is flooded these days but I am thinking with some hard work and dedication I could make it a feasible source of income. I know that as long as I can find some decent income online that I will be able to make it there with my woman. Chiang Mai is my destination due to the lower costs compared to Phuket but I have lived close to the beach all my life so I plan to often visit Phuket.
I want to go to write three books and learn from them. They’re food and crafts. I also want to open a small manufacturing idea I have, but that is the end goal!
Sick of the US, miss the simple life I had and empty nest….Tailandia here I come!
I love that bird’s sound! Can anyone tell me what it is? Sorry, I know it has nothing to so with this really helpful video full of wisdom.
It's a Koel! A type of cuckoo. The name comes from that call they make -- ko-el ko-el.
@@nathan4528 thank you so much! I just looked it up.
Wealth is Stealth, whether Retired or Working.
JOB = Just Over Broke!
Hey Brett, what about investment opportunities in Thailand for those that have some money that dont want to work but have their money work for them. Do you have any tips on that at all or can point us in the right direction?
Not real estate :)
Good question
mostly come here to see Brett getting annoyed at the bird! just kidding! lol
G
Top Draw Brett......not thinking to work, but push on with writing, maybe start some blogging but doubtful.
Money not an issue, as I’m well enough set......the only worry is Im 69, fit enough......So is the age thing too big a deal in your opinion.
Cheers
That bird rocks.
Great video would any of ur mates like to give there rags to Riches stories
Why do most RUclipsrs insist that you subscribe to their channel ! Before you have the chance to see that they are talking Piffle ?
Yet when you Listen to this feller he talks sense 🤷🏼♂️ 🇬🇧
Slowly Slowly just cracked 3,000 subs two years to get here. Yes it takes time, I am now in a position to start a online business now I have gained experience with this channel.
Like your video says there is no quick fix.
Well done.
As always take care who you listen to as there are a lot of snake oil sales persons out there! They are not as grounded and 'upfront' as you. Brett knows his stuff, so good company.
@@Darryl_Smith I 100% agree many people promise to deliver but give you nothing, everyone is trying to sell you something tech for when you start a youtube you need everything you must have this, but now I know what you need and I have plenty of things in the drawer gathering dust.
It’s a learning curve for sure.
Thanks for your comment.
I’m off to Thailand next month to link up with my Thai wife of 16, years, we will build a house on her family land , I’m on the Australian pension , $2000 a month plus a bit from Super income, minimal over heads is the name of the game
Entertaining! Captivating! And Business Coaching as well! Thanks for sharing all this with your audience! I've preached "Focus!" to business partners in the past and lately, I've had trouble following my own advice. As the old saying goes, You can have anything you want in this world, you just can't have everything! As I prepare to leave FLA, USA because of skyrocketing cost of living, still bewildered with where to land. Too much hoop-scotching for me doesn't work. I need to settle in somewhere but where? Vietnam? Thailand? Philippines? Any thoughts?
@True South OMG, your reply is more than I could have expected. Many many thanks for being so comprehensive. I am leaning towards Thailand as I'm of the age where medical has taken on more importance. Anyway, you are a real gem, thank you for all that you do! I will move into the research phase. Best to you!
hi where did you end up choosing...its going okay?
@@regnorse Hello... I did one winter tour with one month in each. Still undecided, they're all great! Currently in Greece for the summer. Will return to USA for one month in Sep and in October, returning with plans to narrow down even more. Probably MY, TH or VN. Have ruled out (reluctantly) ID and PH. I'm striving for a balance of part city center and part country retreat. MY gets an edge as English is somewhat standard. What's up with you?
@@admindesk2760 newbie here. this cost of living escalation so alarming even insulting so might give TH 6 to 12 months...maybe in hot season head to VN...was curious if you had made further progress. Greece would be a dream but hardly feasible surely)))
Great video again Brett thanks! I have a question or possibly an angle that you've not covered yet. I'm looking to move with my wife but when we spent time previously in SE Asia we noticed most of the digital nomads were men. Do you have any advice for women moving to Thailand? E.g how best to find like-minded friends or other business-women?
U can still do business w guys tho?
what exactly is a regular job?
Planning to retire in Thailand in 2023, already have successful online busines here in USA, will continue from there just need to make some arrangements. I pay $3,000.00 US $ rent a month now, i am tired of working to pay bills.
Just seeing this video has gain my interests to move to Thailand 🤔
I came here for the bird ;3 :D
I came to retire and started a business and never look back
I guess I need a better definition on what constitutes a "regular job". I work remote in the US as an engineer in IT sales andt he salaries are pretty high in my field. With the covid-era of the world leading to an increasing surge of remote workers, I'd imagine there are quite a few people with six figure salaries who have the ability to move remotely. Does working for a bigger western company while residing in a country with a lower cost of living constitute a "regular job" in this context? I am interested to see if the increases in remote workers has changed the digital nomad scene. Maybe not everyone has to be a self-employed business owner?
What does an I.T. Sales guy actually do for that role.. and how can it be done remotely..?
id say so, aslong as the job is stable and you dont lose it
with $150k a year you're will be more than fine in Thailand.
Hi Bret!
I've been watching (and loving) your videos for months and I wanted to ask you two questions:
1) Do you have to leave the country every 6 months and renew your tourist visa or did you manage to find a steady solution to stay there full time? Maybe you adopted a different strategy over the years?
2) Do you own a flat back in the UK or anywhere else in Europe? If so do you rent it in order to invest or cover some of your expenses in Thailand?
What kind of bird is that?
I'm 46 now but looking to retire to koh samui or krabi.. I wouldn't know where to start making an online business to make extra cash I'm a technophobe.. I still say please and thank you to Alexa 😐 I would like to do something like a small job to keep myself busy because I'd be on my own for most of the year
I love that bird 55555
Sounds like that dam bird is back 3:41 😂😂😂
I plan on NOT having a regular job./ business when I retire to SE Asia in a few years.
that bird 😂
