Chiang Mai is my favorite place in Thailand. My son and I were there in December of 2023. we both loved Chiang Mai, and the people. We are planning to make another trip. AWESOME!!!
I love Chiang Mai!💘 I was there for about 3 1/2 months and I rented an apartment room just out side of Chiang Mai Gate, $4000 baht a month! It was on the same road as the Saturday night market It had two restaurants, one for breakfast and lunch and the other was a dinner restaurant that also had karaoke every night! The old city of Chiang Mai, inside the gates was unbelievable for the culture of Thailand and the food and night life! 🦂💘 Thailand .... 🍻 Singha beer 😋 🙏
Chiang Mai is very charming. It's like Kyoto of Japan but more fun. People there are so laid back. No wonder why many Thai artists like to set up their shops there. Even the food and drinks are more artistic than the rest of the country. You can feel Chiang Mai people put their heart for work at everything. And they charge so little compared to what they give to you. My favorite area is definitely Nimman, the modernized part of the city which has the best shops and restaurants. I still have love-hate relationships with the red Song taew. Well, but it costs 10 baht to get anywhere around the city.and you can't beat its convenience. Outside the city, Chiang Mai is heaven for any nature lovers. Foreigners should experience the local homestays. They are so cheap with amazing views. The mountains will cool you down.
is cost 10 baht to get everywhere? Is this for Nimman or just red song taew? I want to visit Chiang Mai but want to have access to cheap transport, like bus or train. I don't want to use bolt or grab
@Fearless 10 baht everywhere around the city was 6 years ago when I was there and without a car. Right now, I checked it should be around 30 baht. You can just tell them where you want to go. You share a ride with other people.
Red cab is thirty bath officials since 2017/18 for longer distance and twenty for shorter. Now is thirty. If you pay ten bath to the red cub is offensive specially after covid. No red cub will except 10 bath. Even locals do not pay ten bath. The cheapest is yellow cab and is twenty bath.

I really like these "something for everyone" vids on cities. ... showing the areas with their ins and outs ... especially if one likes a little bit of everything .... provides so much clearer understanding.
Thanks for the video. But I wished you didn't show a few of the Starbucks. Chiang Mai has better coffee than almost anyplace in the world, and great coffee shops all over. Locals and smart tourists would not waste their time with less superior coffee at a Starbucks. (:
I have just been in Chiang Mai for three months and I can confirm that the most horrible coffee is Starbucks at Airport Plaza. The best coffee is Arigato at Central Festival in the basement supermarket.
This is the second video I have watched of yours..I have subscribed. I really like your presentation, and the info you in part...you seem and sound like a trained travel journalist ....which is a positive..Thanks for the videos so useful!
Friend your vlog was extremely informative. I'm planning to go there for 6-8 weeks in June to August. Really liked it. Thank you so much. Keep traveling wayward 😎🙏.
The northern parts of the old city are the most charming. Especially the cosy NE corner. Tha Pae gate not so much. Also the Nimman area is very nice about half way between the old city and the temple hill Doi Suthep.
We love Chiang Mai and have spent most winters there since 2005. We always get a long term rental somewhere in the N.E. corner of the old city. This year we will arrive November 3rd.
There are some nice local restaurants on the small soi's off Loh Kroh road....one of the best is about half way down, turn right on Soi 1, walk past the Number one bar and past the scooter hire shop to a small restaurant on the left called 'Aum and Camrons' ....excellent thai food and reasonably priced beer....a lot of the bar girls from Loh Kroh eat here and take aways are constantly leaving the shop via Grab....
A very nice and full review of Chang Mai! I've never been there, but have it in the back of my mind that this could be a potential longer term secondary living situation. Are there neighbourhoods that have a great friendly vibe, nice accommodations and not too hectic?
I have lived in Chiang Mai for several years, and Thapae Gate is not a place where one can experience local culture. As you correctly point out, it is a tourist magnet, and even your accompanying video shows McDonald’s and Starbucks and hordes of tourist milling about, with the only tThais around, being those selling trinkets and food to the hordes of tourists. The Asians, you see walking about Thapae Gate and surrounding area are not Thai people, they are Chinese tourists feeding the pigeons, despite the signs asking you not to do so.
Great information. I will be coming to Chiang Mai at the end of February. I'm staying for a year, and this video will definitely help me decide where to look for a place.
@kipps guitar I'm fully aware it's the middle of burning season. Not putting off my life change for that reason. Just makes all those other days that much better.
This year, I'll be wrapping up a 3-month stay in Thailand with 2 weeks in Chiang Mai. My fourth trip to Thailand, but first time in Chiang Mai. Previously, my visits to Thailand have been in the south. I've already booked some reservations in and around the Old City. But am also interested in taking some trips out of the city to experience more traditional culture and scenery. I was thinking in the north, but am open to suggestion. Also, since it's my first visit and am only there a short time, I'm considering going on one of the "tour" services -- something which I'd not normally do. Any suggestions in this regard?
Thank you for your good video. I am funny watching your video. Actually, I am learning English with taking your movie.😊 In the future, I will be able to take an English and get to trip like your introduced country.
From the past, I used to like Chiang Mai...Now it's unlikely. PM 2.5 dust is much higher than Bangkok and is ranked number one in the world as well. This problem is difficult to solve because the city is growing more and more people come to stay, more cars, more factories. Even if no one burns the forest, PM 2.5 is the most important from car smoke. City population will die in installments. Investors will aim to build real estate in the seaside town. more cities in the south because the air is easily circulated
How is the cockroach menace in Chiang Mai ? Which areas one can live to avoid it ? I am talking strictly wrt accommodations. So, if you can suggest place or area.
@@AlwaysonaJourney May you please suggest me some condos, I am planning to stay for a month. I know you have suggested the key areas but what would you choose in terms of cleanliness and accessibility.
In the area around Central Festival, there are more than 10 projects of condos. And on the other side of Central, there is a business park which has another +10 condos. It's far from the city center (by walk), but you can access to many places in 10 minutes by bike or Grab taxi. for me I prefer the area around central festival.
The worst ever "hotel" that I ever stayed in decades was "Cozy Inn" in Chiang Mai. It was a mix up with a different hotel that I had intended to stay. I had already paid for a week and gosh, it was a hellhole. Nasty place, awful owner, once-white gray color towels, mosquitors, tiny rooms tiny bed, dark color to hide dirts maybe, yuck. Someone had come inside my room while I was out, but the owner didn't seem to care. Only one guy at the hotel spoke English. This place ruined Chiang Mai for me and I will never miss Chiang Mai. BTW, I love Thailand and visit frequently.

It's good to mention prices when you talk about "affordable", more expensive" and "cheaper" hotels - it's all relative and hard to judge.
