  • Welcome back to Chateau de Puy Vidal
In this episode, we learn to work in the Potager (Vegetable Garden) as our gardeners send us on a mission to pick out the veggies for this season. We till the soil, space our veggies and finally plant them. Join us at the very early stages of learning what it means to take care of the gardens of Chateau de Puy Vidal.
A very special guest arrives to the Chateau- Emily, Robert's twin sister visits the chateau for the first time all the way from San Francisco.
    -------
These are the adventures of Julia, her partner Carolina, her sister Penelope and her parents Maruca and Robert; an American family taking a leap of faith and living out a long-awaited dream of moving to the French countryside.
Château de Puy Vidal is a medieval fortress turned renaissance Castle, and is located in the Charente region of Nouvelle Aquitaine, France. This channel is dedicated to our love of chateaux, old stones, magic, family and history. We share with you our life at Puy Vidal. What happens when your dreams come true?

I was delighted to hear Julia say the importance of stepping back from both the tech work and mandatory outdoor maintenance and spending time together enjoying the beauty, practical and psychological benefits of the garden by focussing on flowers, herbs and veggies. As always thank you for sharing your family and castle with us all ❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜

Well done….your potager is gorgeous….I am a avid gardener for 30 years and drooling over the garden. Next year instead of paying so much for your vegetables consider getting seeds and planting your own. You can start them earlier in pots and the seeds will last many years. I grow about 800 seedlings a year and it is so much cheaper….enjoy your bounty..😊

I don’t know what time of day you are planting the veggies but you want as much sun as possible. Once your blue berries get estimated you will probably want to mesh tent them. Or your birds and wildlife will enjoy. Tulle from a fabric shop is good and wildlife safe. Birds and animals get stuck in the more open fencing.

From April to June, my hands are in the dirt and I love every minute of it. I’m thrilled that you’re finally getting to experience growing your own food. I’m excited to see your reaction when you eat what you’ve grown and the satisfaction it will bring you! Your potage garden beds are beautiful and I can’t wait for updates!

Next time you buy plants, water them well before you plant them. You also can add water and root stimulating fertilizer in the hole then add slow release organic fertilizer on top. Be sure to add compost each spring to the beds or top dress with it. Also, for the annuals like the salvias, if you cut off the blooms at planting they establish roots sooner. They will reward you with more blooms later. Lovely garden, good luck!

When you go to the food markets looks for the "echaillions", they aren't a shallot nor an onion, they are a hybrid of the two, purple and long..some areas call them "cuisse de poule", as that is their shape, I use them in salads instead of either onions or shallots and EVERYBODY loves them!!!...perfect french salad dressing 1 teaspoon Lemon juice or red wine vinegar (with the mere) 3 tablespoons olive oil, a 1/2 Moutarde fine de Dijon, salt and pepper..stir, then put in your salad composition and extras then toss.....I personally use the lemon for Mozza /tomato/basil meals, it's lighter and best for noon...you can also add in cukes....

Wonderful late spring video. It's been a horrid cold winter in California too, I have yet to be able to put out my plants. Girls, please wear gloves when working in the soil. Earth leaches all the moisture from your skin, plus it's easier clean-up when you're done working. Another commenter mentioned tenting your plants to protect them from rabbits, birds and bugs. YES!!!! You really must do this. With long, bendy poles you create a series of support arches along your planting row, then drape netting over it, securing it at ends and sides. The more hoops you install, the better the support for the netting/gauze and the neater your garden will look.

@@ladyofthechateau my father was the one who grew up on a farm and he knew all about all those things.
Another was ‘plant when its a full moon’ …. His vegies were all big and healthy.
He also put sheep manure in a big bucket then put water in it so 25% sheep manure the rest water. Stir it up then put a lid on it then place in shady cool place. Next day put the water into watering containers. And water the bottom of plants that are needing help to grow, don’t water the leaves just aim at the bottom root area. Water in the late part of the day an hour before sunset. This water will soak into the plant.. it should be watered every second day with this manure water mix
The sheep manure can be done again with the water in bucket, for about a fortnight. Then just plant the sheep manure into the soil and then cover with soil then plant some roses its great for them❤️❤️❤️❤️

Hi I think that was wisteria that was trying to grow in that bed that your mom is going to dig it out and put the Rose. You mentioned that there was wire already on the wall and how strange that was but I think that’s because that’s wisteria already in that area. Maybe it got quite damaged and it’s taking a long time to come back but I believe that’s what the leaves look like I could be wrong.

Don’t worry about how to garden - it will all fall into place and when your plants start to grow and produce bounty you will be so excited. I’ve learned about plants & flowers from my mom and grandmother. It’s an inherited love I think. I love your family and Puy Vidal is the prettiest chateau in France. I think the gardens are what makes it such a divine place. Keep us informed of your veggies & herbs & I wish you lots of luck! Cheers from Alabama! 🥂

All of us gardeners were where you are right now. You’ll have many successes and some failures. It’s wonderful that you had your gardeners to help you.Does your department have some kind of resource like a county extension office in the states?

how fortunate you are to have this awsome garden to plant legumes greens and fruitplants/trees and of course all the space for flowers. Gardening , growing legumes/ herbs is such a delight, connection with nature makes us feeling whole and healthy. A treat to watch your vlogs, thank you
