The same family owned that bar back in the 90's and was very open to talking about Ed. I can't believe it still exists. Last of the old seedy dive bars. Good times!
I love that place. They still have some great beers on tap. Apparently, there used to be a plaque that hung on the wall that told about Big Ed being a former patron there......of course, someone stole it, so the rest of us have to miss out on it. I asked the bartender and he said there were no plans of getting a replacement. Total bummer.
That's pretty cool that it's still open and they are willing to talk about Ed. I bet there's a photo that someone took to remember the night and Ed was seen in the background. It's like living history. I can't think of an example, but there are landmarks where it's taboo to speak of it's past when that's maybe why they get 80% of their walk in traffic wants to hear about.
The story of Ed Kemper is so sad. It's the perfect storm of bad circumstances that ultimately end up in tragedies displaying the worst behavior of mankind. It's the opposite story of say a kid who goes with his friend to an acting audition only to be discovered by a talent scout and the friend who went along ends up becoming a star like Clint Eastwood, or McLovin', both who were discovered that way.
@@BayAreaBabylon415 Yes, i have heard it many times it was because of his size, which is ridiculous if you think about it. Talking about giving someone who already is self conscious another reason to have a complex. It's the "anti-Bobby Brady" argument. If Bobby was small enough to escape Sam's Deli's Walk-In fridge through the window so he could let Greg out, then maybe it would be easier for Ed to save cats from trees, reach for people from burning buildings, and so on.
My dad brought this man to our house when we were at school to have lunch my father was a draftsman engineer at the courthouse in Santa Cruz And he worked with my father When this was in the news unfolding my father had no idea he was shocked
Ok it was not the city of Santa Cruz that was called the "murder capital" it was Santa Cruz County. This was because of all the dumped bodies they found in the Santa Cruz mountains.
Dude.... how about not be so close to the road and maybe be just around the corner of the bar for sound quality. Plus please stop sounding like Steve Bushumi back in the 50's as a crime detective. I know who your talking about. He used to be at my job
I didnt kno his killings were in northern California i thought he did them some where else... i only thought the bay area had the zodiac killer and some others like manson who had ties to the bay area ..
Yes, Kemper lived and killed in an around Santa Cruz and Aptos. I'll be posting next week where I visit his murder house in Aptos. Also, the Bay Area has numerous serial killers including: Charles Ng and Leonard Lake. The Doodler. The Night Stalker. The Trailside Killer, along with Manson and Zodiac. Keep checking back because I'll be doing stories on all of them!
Also, another horrible thing about Santa Cruz is the vampires.
All the damn vampires
I was just in the Jury Room a couple nights ago! They had some great punk bands playing

No it is not the last. There are still several in Santa Cruz. The Watering Hole has probably been there even longer and still exists.
My band played there in the late 90’s. Always a super fun crowd.
Its a great bar. Always a fun time when they have live music. Thats cool your band played there!!!
When you say "the watering hole's crowd" that is a confusing phrase to use as another dive bar in West Santa Cruz is called "The Watering Hole".
I will stop by The Watering Hole next time Im through SC. Thanks for the suggestion!
@@BayAreaBabylon415 👍🏼Ye 'Ole Watering Hole on Mission St.
Giant Gopher!!!!! drank there all the time, awesome dive bar with a very wierd vibe.
Check out the book Murder Capital of the World by Emerson Murray. He dug super deep into all the Santa Cruze murders.
Yeeeessssss!!!! I can't wait to read that book. I have read about it and need to get a copy : )
Thanks for having me edit this!
The taqueria next door is really good.
I gotta stop by next time I'm through. Thanks for the rec!
I’m from Santa Cruz. Lived there over 50 years. Iv been to that bar countless times. Not as many times as me at The Catalyst but a lot. 🏄♂️🥃

Was he rejected from law enforcement for his size? Or the fact he had a record from murdering 2 people and spent time in a state hospital?
Great question. I had read it was due to his size....but his previous record would also be a significant factor.

I actually lived in the kemper home for 13 years pretty creppy shit
Oh man, that's crazy! 13 years is a long time.

Its still here 😂
Your audio in the beginning is unfortunately uneven.
Sorry about that. It was a bit glitchy.
DREAT video's on Ed by the way.❣
Glad you like them! Many more to come.
He wasn't rejected from the police department for being too tall. He was rejected because of his IQ.
