Fun Fact: Just two* years* prior to the North Hollywood shootout, the movie _Heat_ released. A common criticism of _Heat_ among law enforcement had been that the shootout scene with the armed suspects was "unrealistic" because it was believed that robbers would not be that heavily armed nor willing to fight police head on. The North Holly shootout would prove all that wrong.

If it's news station footage that's essentially the same as Disney or Universal.
That's why many informative vids on RUclips, that are on specific events, don't use famous or well-known footage that is owned by companies. Example: the Zapruder film with the JFK assassination, the "UFO" mass sighting footage of lights over a mountain range in Arizona or New Mexico (I forget which), etc. You'll see the footage on the History Channel or Discovery because they pay the rights to use that footage.
Typically, yt channels don't because it's expensive so they'll only use stills or different footage that is close enough. Typically the companies that own the footage are very aggressive at citing videos that use their footage.

The craziest thing about this shootout was the news reporter who was casually reporting from behind a car while the shooters were actually shooting at him. Note, a 7.62x39mm will punch through and out the other side of a car. The only thing that will sufficiently stop the bullet is the engine block. Mans strait up was in the line of fire and didn’t care.

@@herrschmidt5477 at 300 yards a 7.62x39 has the same foot/pounds of energy as a .44 Magnum. Even a "lowly" 9mm Luger can punch through both windshields of a car. Cars are not safe from gunfire in any way shape or form. Even hiding behind the engine block can cause you to take shrapnel or richochets from the bullet tearing through the body of the vehicle. If you take cover behind a vehicle, it's better to be about a body's length away. "Stay off the walls"

You're so cocky for a while after you've been in battle that you go toe-to-toe with big huge guys and it's a pleasure because they're not suicide bombers. The bank was in a grocery store and it was boring, so you got to be genuinely useful to all the customers, if you bothered to learn all about the store. It was a great feeling having the necessary information to answer all sorts of questions.

I hope it's not rude to have laughed at that... But I did. She had to be hard as fuck to keep working there.
Realistically though, that's the best way to rob someone and things would be much better if we just had more polite armed robbers. Jokes aside, it's a very effective strategy, hell it's humane in a way. Killing someone that you're robbing makes no sense; you're just adding a murder charge.
D.B. Cooper was described as extremely kind. When asked by his hostage "why?" he told her "It's not that I have a grudge against you or your airline. I just have a grudge." According to her, he kept reassuring her that everything was going to be okay, despite the *bomb* on him. I think that's a large contribution as to why he was the only successful hijacker. He even told the crew (who he had lock themselves in the cockpit) "Have a good day" before he jumped out. He was so polite that he *got the plane grounded and evacuated without them knowing about the hijack. (Edit: While you might assume Stockholm Syndrome, there wasn't enough time, she didn't help him, she was still a *hostage*.)
It's fascinating when you think about it, someone can be doing an awful crime while still acting like good people. Maybe being a good person and committing awful crimes aren't mutually exclusive...

The thing is with the robberies with the notes, my mom used to work at a bank, and she did get robbed like this. She told me that she gave the guy the money because she didnt know if he was armed or not. The dude eventually got caught, but my mom got FIRED for literally DOING HER JOB the way she was trained to. A couple years later the FBI gave her a 'im sorry' letter from that guy while he was in prison. Turns out he was a drug addict, and he got help.

It's not crazy at all, its called poor journalism. People arent interested in getting the facts correct, they just want to shit out content as quickly as possible to profit off it. Yeah this shootout was caught mostly on camera, but then someone making the documentaries would need to *watch it* and that takes time, time these people dont want to waste in getting correct information, they just wanna vomit their content into the world and let the money roll in.
"Good" journalism doesnt exist when those journalists stand to make good money off something.

The thing about phenobarbital is that you're not going to feel "intoxicated" in the way that a lot of the other sources might have imagined. You're just going to feel exceedingly calm (bordering on lethargic if you don't have enough stimuli to occupy your senses), and you're also not going to exhibit what you might call reasonable risk-aversion. Basically even with their plan falling apart and finding themselves surrounded, they probably met their end with something akin to indifference. Like a lot of anti-seizure meds, phenobarbital was also widely used to treat people with panic attacks and PTSD.

The cops would have been utterly overwhelmed by the events and in order to avoid paralysis, their psyches reached for a to-do list to follow. The first steps would be to secure any weapons and to secure any bodies for all the reasons the other commenters mentioned above. Can you imagine a young patrol officer walking through his front door at the end of that shift??? What would have gone through his head? At least not a .308 round, I suppose...

I see a lot of people in these comments backing up these cops who let Emil bleed to death. A few things to make note of-
    - These two are pretty noble gunmen all things considered- in several reports it's noted they moved civilians into the bank vault when they began preparing for a gunfight because they didn't want anyone uninvolved and innocent needlessly in the middle of what was about to turn into a "bulletstorm".
    - The two were also practicing suppressive fire. To an untrained eye it would seem like they were just "spraying and praying", but they are other instances of them using actual small unit tactics which makes it far more likely they were attempting to "suppress" the increasingly insurmountable numbers they knew they would be facing the longer they were stuck "on the X". With suppressive fire, you're deliberately trying to keep the enemies in cover so that you reduce their windows of opportunity to return fire to a minimum. This, in tandem with retreating ground as you cover one another's withdrawal, is SOP for the Army with "breaking contact", and it's emphasized heavily in the unit I belong to, the Scout platoon, and all of our contemporaries- because of the idea that if we are discovered and engaged, we aren't moving with nearly the same numbers and firepower as the enemy is probably bringing. All in all, they weren't shooting to kill, they were shooting to escape.
    - During the escape, Emil opted to instead spend invaluable extra moments to intimidate a driver instead of outright blowing their head off in haste and disregard, so that he could hijack a getaway vehicle. This enabled the driver to disable the vehicle before running, leaving Emil stranded and out of time. An act of mercy, got him killed.
These are obviously not fantastic dudes, but when people nowadays call for the humiliation and suffering of guys like these, while simultaneously not whispering a word, or even protesting in favor of the types of criminals we now have in 2024 who brazenly flaunt their crimes and are unnaturally sadistic towards both Law Enforcement and Civilians...
You get what you pay for I guess.
You should keep this in mind the next time any of you are on the opposite end of the Law, especially with how unpredictable that seems to be becoming nowadays.

I was in a 7/11 in Texas and a guy pulled a pistol on the clerk and in the most Texan thing ever, 5, if I am remembering correctly, separate bystanders pulled their own pistols on him and held him there until the cops arrived. On a more serious note, I worked with a guy on a construction crew who had just gotten out of jail for serial bank robbery so I can shed a bit of light on why he'd walk out the front door randomly. The guy I worked with usually did unarmed solo hits where he'd just walk up to the teller and demand $2k but, when he did go for the vault, he'd work in a team of three. One guy was in charge of getting the cash, one guy was in charge of crowd control and one guy waited outside to make sure that the planned escape route was still clear and came up with an alternate if it wasn't
