I was just watching the interview with the cameraman that was wtih steve irwin when he was killed. He said they were actually standing in knee deep water, where the stingray got him. it struck a bunch of times, but that one shot that got him, hit his heart.
Next time it stalls out try this.put the gas tank above the motor . If it runs again after raising the tank, it might have a bad fuel pump. 1. Make sure tank vent is open. 2.look for air leaks in the fuel line from the gas tank all the way to the fuel pump. Clear fuel line helps out alot to look for bubbles. 3. Shorten that dang fuel line. Manufactures specifically state that you should not use long fuel lines. It puts a serious strain on fuel pumps . Diaphragm fiel pumps will struggle even worse. 4.Check to see if the thermostat is opening and see if the water pump is actually pumping. (An overheating engine will bog down) 5. Make sure your float bowl isn't sticking if its not EFI
I was stung in the heel while wading a few years back and I can tell you, it is by far the worst pain I've even felt and I was out of fishing commission for about four months.
Glad you didn't get stung. I hooked a southern stingrays last summer. It was huge, about 5 feet around. Landed it about 20 minutes later and had about a 4 inch stinger. Could have done some serious damage. Glad you didn't get stung. I'm going to check out those boots though. Thanks!
That's a dog for you. Their curiosity can get them sometimes. Besides, I highly doubt a poke would bother a dog. I've seen a dog smell a blazing hot tailpipe on a motorcycle and its nose sizzled a bit upon contact. The dog hardly even cared. 🤷♂️
I used desert boots heavily lugged on the bottom and canvas tops for wading mud flats with oyster bars. I appreciated the protection of feet getting sliced crossing oyster bars and will look into these armor boots. I've walked through saw grass in shorts when a shark ran me off of the flats, I'd do the same facing way too many sting rays. Leaving was the smart thing to do when fishing alone.
Bro!! At 8:07 my heart stopped 😳 those boots are the real deal! I’m so glad you’re alright! Be safe out there bro and keep on fishing! The motor will be back up and running soon.
Let’s not all pretend we wade out there and don’t get lax thinking that they won’t come near us and start just taking small steps. I’ve done it and this video makes me think
Hey man! THANKS for sharing vital info!! All these years I’ve just been wearing old tenners ( converse canvas tennis shoes) Never thought about stepping on a stingray. Now I know. Cool. Thanks again.
I don't know what's worse. Clear water so you can see them all or the merky water we have here in Galveston where you can't see down 6 inches, so you'll never see them coming. This video plus all the comments will keep me up at night. 😩
You mentioned two types of rays local...though the one you forgot to mention was the one I see the most in the area. That is the cownose ray. Glad you lucked out. I have heard it hurts a lot to get hit...but seems quite a bit exaggerated at the same time. Don’t want to find out though. May check out the boots 😂😂😂
I had a similar problem with my Tohatsu motor, left me stranded offshore. Get towed by my buddy to the ramp, and at the washdown it's starts right up, and purrs like a kitten. I changed, the plug and fuel filter, and next time it goes like crazy until after a couple hours of running it dies again like before. tank lines, air vent, primer pump all fine. I next change the fuel pump diaphragm. Repeat of previous trip - gets me offshore but it dies after a couple hours. Last resort I replaced the ignition coil. Last two trips it has run like a champ. For me it was the coil. YMMV. Tohatsu has a 5 year warranty so I suggest you take advantage of it, and let the dealer play with it.
I gig sometimes. It is amazing how many rays there are when you are in the shallows at night with penetrating light. It has changed my fearless wader attitude. And shuffling 200 yards sucks. In addition, if you go fish the pass or other high traffic areas where you meet other anglers, you'll meet people who have ray scars they'll show you and caution you about. I=uck rays. Im buying those boots before the spring. They school like reds. If you see one, there are several on the flats you are on. Ive seen another Thresher vid where you get on top of a bunch and have to leave. Yuk.
It's the ethanol in the your fuel. I had the same problem. Water causes the ethanol to separate from the fuel. During this time of the year temperatures will drop below the dew point and form fog. Your tank will collect this moisture and cause separation. I had to have my fuel system completely flushed. There are plenty of videos about ethanol separation. I hope this helps.
Got hit dehookimg a plagic bat ray up in the Tasman when I was long lineing for bluefin tuna ,messed me up but I finished the trip off ,still alive today ,,😀😗thanks for sharing dude ,keep well
My dad got stung on his finger and he said it was the worst thing he's ever experienced. At the ER while we were waiting (for what felt like an hour) he kept begging them to help and a nurse just casually went "go to the bathroom and put it under hot water"... turns out it worked. Scolding hot water will relieve the pain.
Amen. I seen a dude stung at outer banks and it scarred me for fuckin life! He was in some intense pain. I have contemplated several times buying steel shanked metatarsal boots to wade in Lol
I had a double barb stingray hit me right in my Achilles. I was down for two weeks and it was summer so the doctors were worried about Vibrio since I have lost my father to the bacteria. It took his life at 45 years young. The only thing that would kill the pain was water as hot as I could stand it. Dude and I swear I was fishing a area just like you were where I saw hundreds every day. I fished there 16 trips in a row catching limits every time. Well the 17th trip I took a bunch of my friends and I didn’t make 30 yards from the boat right at day light and I got hit. I pull my foot out of the water and he was still stuck in me. I put my foot back down in the water and he pulled out finally. Thank God he didn’t leave a barb in me. Man once you get hit you will never forget it.
Glad your ok my dad got hit by one!! Went through this neoprene wading boot through this ankle just missed his Achilles’ tendon. This was on north Padre island during a beach fishing tournament. Ended up going to hospital on main land and was back about 3:30 was back fishing at 6am. Now has a badass tattoo of stingrays mural on his calf for memory!!
Invest in a water/fuel separator. May have water in your gas tank giving you issues. A $20/$30 purchase will save you a lot of headaches In winter the hot/cold creates condensation.. Tight lines
You should use a longer fish stringer if keeping fish while wading. As a fellow wade fisherman sharks will take your fish and if they do the farther away from you the stringer is the better plus a knot that is easy to pull undone and let go
A stingray sting can be made to stop hurting almost instantly by application of water to the wound as hot as you can stand it. It is a truly a amazing feeling when that terrible pain goes away like magic. (You still need to go to the doctor to get your shots, get the barb taken out if necessary, etc.)
Wow, it's like you're one of the only people that knows how to string a fish. Everyone goes through the gills. I make custom stringers and clip through the lips
But with the Foreverlast boots you wear Foreverlast leg wraps called Ray Guards! They are thicker and more protective than just the boot alone. Either boot can use the Ray Guard leg wraps for more safety as some rays are big and can stab you up to the knee!
13 yr old son got stung on the Achilles’ tendon behind his right foot. We were about 10 miles down PINS. He hurt for about 2 hrs but then we applied heat hand warmers which he said felt so much better. Don’t put ice or cold water. Will make the pain worse for a longer period of time.
I have the ray guards with the shield protector and the day I went fishing and forgot the protectors I got punched by a ray right through the boot and into the tendon, worst pain ever, now I rock the Baffin Bay boots with the guards

I believe those 15hp tohatsu motors are the same thing as the 15 horsepower Mercury motors. I would buy yourself the manual and the parts book. Could be a loose kill switch Did it start to sputter before it died? I've seen the quick connection get worn out and suck up air in the fuel line Also like another comment said your gas tank should be able to vent while you're running If there's water in your gas tank your motor will usually make popping sounds before it dies
I got popped 3 summers ago just below my calf. Incredibly painful! Worse part was I had about a 200 yard walk to the boat then an 8 mile run back to the ramp. Long day!!
At least they worked today buddy. Even though the tip of a knife gets through with ease probably keeps a stingray barb from getting through to stick you.
Hey Coop, just wondering what you think about wearing ray guard boots with ray guard shield protectors. I always use both. I’ve been struck once by a stingray using the boots and I was quite lucky I had them. The gash was about an inch long. Anyways your thought on the shields?
Run seafoam thru the engine, could need to be cleaned out. If it is dying slow it sounds like maybe junk in the carb bowl or it is using ethanol fuel and gummed up the bowl and card. Try it, could help without doing major work.
I got hit right above my arch on the inside of my foot. I was lucky it pulled the barb out. A lot of blood and pain beyond explanation. It was a good 30min ride back to the dock and another 40 mins before I got to the hospital. I kept thinking "the pain cant get any worse" and then it would hit a new level. Those boots are definitely worth the investment.

Lots of marine technicians in the comment haha. Thanks but I reckon I already fixed it. There was some water in the fuel and needed a new fuel line.
The master mechanic strikes again.
I was just fixing to comment from what you said in the video that you needed a new fuel hose. At least its an inexpensive fix.
Bro you know to swish them feet.... Better to kick em up and poop your pants than to get got.
Cooper, if it's available in your area use E10 fuel it has less ethanol and prevents less water build up in your gas tank.
@@jstrom3007
Just stop at your local Buc-ees. The locations near popular boat launches typically have ethanol free fuel available.

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who noticed .
Hey coop I’ve been watching your videos for over a year now and they always cheer me up.
Close call! Glad you had those boots.
Tank not venting, causing a vacuum in the fuel line after a while.
I was going to say the same.. Vacuum lock for sure..
If thats not it, could be a small hole in the fuel pump diaphragm.
Gotta be, especially the way it starts up and idles and runs fine and only dies after a little while
