  • Ever since Rise of the Ronin launched, many people have been drawing comparisons to Ghost of Tsushima due to the open world nature of the two games and similarities in setting. When Ghost of Tsushima launched, it was met with universal acclaim, and a completely baffled gaming community gushing over the graphical limitations that Sucker Punch seemed to completely demolish. In contrast, Rise of the Ronin has launched with mixed criticism from the community, with many calling it a “downgraded Ghost of Tsushima”. With Ghost of Tsushima launching on PC in just over a week, we’re going to cover why that is not the case, and how Rise of Ronin is actually a better contender than you think against the 2020 Game of the Year nomination.

    Didn't realize this was something that was even up for debate.... Ghost, 100% ghost. I'm not even talking about the graphic differences or how they did the open world although ghost is Superior in those cases as well. The combat in ghosts felt so smooth and fantastic. The Parry system was unique and beautiful. It felt like minimalism in a game at close to its finest. I am a huge team ninja fan as well but Ronin can't touch how great that game was. And then there was even added the free Legends mode with fhost, raids and all. Simply sublime. Hope they make a ghost 2 before long.

    2:06 I wouldn't agree that graphics is everything, as all FromSoftware games have proven the opposite. Good or bad graphics are important only in cases where the content is already average.

    • @Scadu_Orhyn
      @Scadu_Orhyn Месяц назад +3

      Ultimately, graphics shouldn’t matter.
      But I’d be ignorant to let it go completely. It ALL revolves around the games you’ve grown up with/grown out of, games that are around you, etc..
      You cant blame someone who was born in 2012 playing video games in 2024 being upset that a game doesn’t look like Red Dead Redemption 2. It’s a completely valid complaint, given their circumstances.
      I think a healthy way to approach this topic is with a game’s Art Direction. Graphics being “bad” should ONLY be a result of mediocre Art Direction. You bring up one of the best examples of recent memory: Fromsoftware.
      They do not have the best graphics, but you can be DAMN SURE the Art Direction makes up for its lack of fidelity. From the Dark medieval character designs and world design of Dark Souls; very edgy and unsettling vibe to Bloodborne; or how Sekiro seems to be one of the only Japanese Sengoku games that actually utilise the country’s mythical stories to provide a visually pleasing experience; to the unique approach to high fantasy they took with Elden Ring, with its visual aesthetics being an amalgamation of many real life cultural myths and cultures, creating some very engrossing visuals from an art design perspective…
      they never miss with visuals. No matter the graphical fidelity.
      If a game isn’t visually interesting (art direction OR graphics), it can destroy an experience. Many developers lack focus. ROTR has unprovocative visuals. Sure, it does lack a fantasy setting so it should make sense why visuals are uninteresting, right? Well Ghost of Tsushima specifically is set within real world law of fiction, while still offering up some pretty remarkable art direction inspired directly from real life Japanese locations. That’s focus, right there. Focus is what some designers need, I feel.
      I also use Fromsoft as an example because Miyazaki, in plenty interviews, talks about this focus. He reinforces that his designs MUST be fucked up and terrible, while maintaining a level of elegance or beauty in some way shape or form. For every game he does, this is the main sentiment with the design team. It’s a focus. One instruction, 7 games.
      But I speak as a consumer. Ultimately, I have no idea what goes into development. Just that my ignorant ass is never satisfied😂

    • @perperikis5501
      @perperikis5501 Месяц назад +1

      @@Scadu_Orhyn Yes, on some degree, graphics will matter but I wouldn't take a 12 yo kid as an example since that person is not eligible to play FromSoft games yet (due to age). I mean, we already have Sekiro and Elden Ring as game of the year winners, and they are considered mediocre in the graphics department. Sekiro is even a more extreme example, as besides mediocre graphics I'd assume it also has a smaller target group due to its extreme difficulty that is definitely not for everyone. And yet, they are on top.
      On the other side, Red Dead Redemption 2 was surely praised for its excellent graphics but nowadays its graphics do not look that unreal anymore. However, it is still discussed on the gaming community because of its content (e.g. people still discover new things in its world). It's still an iconic game and not anymore for its graphics.
      I'd argue that the bottom-line here is that people care more about graphics when the content / gameplay is not top notch to begin with. Or I might be wrong. In any case, though, I don't think that the example with the chef's food given in the video is applicable when it comes to gaming. The mechanisms at work are totally different.

    I had fun with Rise of the Ronin, I even got the platinum but the open world does let it down much like most newer games. I feel like open worlds are holding a lot of games back from focusing on and improving more important things. I don't think ALL games are held back by their open worlds, for example, Elden Ring and Red Dead Redemption 2 both managed to make fun open worlds while also making time to flesh out other things. My problem is that the majority of open worlds tend to be bland and repetitive, too many open world games fail to make good use of the concept and it's a shame. I think if Ronin was more linear and focused, it could've been a lot better. The combat is brilliant, a lot of the characters are interesting, fun and have a lot of heart poured into their personalities and dialogue but I believe if it wasn't for the open world, these things would've been even better. Overall, I had a better time with Ghost of Tsushima but I still really enjoyed Rise of the Ronin a lot, it just failed in more areas than Ghost of Tsushima did, in my opinion.

    Ghost of Tsushima's combat was like based in real life physics of how to be a real life better Samurai warrior. like how Samurai warrior supposed to fight in real life, they study every moves and every steps of how a samurai sword affects human body in contact in lethal situations, people find the combat was slow compared to other similar genre, but it really didn't, that's how accurately a trained peak human can move, not like been animated with flashy and fast faced moves but unrealistic like they are super humans. people just been used on a fast faced action game or movies with flashy and animated moves. I hope GoT will keep the realistic way in case there's GoT 2 sequel was coming, that's why the game was especial and what separate it to it's kind of genre, hoped it won't change. Unlike Rise of the Ronin, combat was fast faced like they move unrealistically and feels like they not ordinary human, movement was so fast and super human like and feels animated, but the combat was exciting, just being almost the same like the kind of other games of it's genre, the game was overall good, just not the type of game that would separate itself to others and make a trademark in gaming history to be a different one. Both games was fantastic, they have different specialty that one have and the other don't, depends on the gamers which their prefer and like the most in terms of what type of games they really like, why not liking both.

    Rise of the ronin is in my opinion, is so much better than ghost of Tsushima. The combat is slick and really addictive. So although g.o.t. Looks better, something about it just bores me. Obviously most people are going to choose ghost over rise of the ronin but for me, how much fun it is moment to moment is much more important than aesthetics. And I don’t think ror looks bad at all either. It’s a shame they released it the same day as dragons dogma 2 because it flew under the radar big time. I can’t wait for dlc to start dropping and hoping for pvp like the first nioh game.

      @@spiritualsoul2711 There are at least 4 weapons; Katana, Dagger, Long Range Bow and Mid Range Bow. Also there are 4 stances with different move sets, which you have to match to the enemies. There are also enemy types that can mix between 2 or more types/stances themselves, requiring you to switch gear also. You also have different types of assassinations, attacks from the air, attack from horse, etc. I think it provides a decent challenge and variety, but I do recommend playing on Lethal difficulty, if you can get through the start of the game like that while you unlock gear, stances and skills.

    My main gripe with Ghost of Tsushima is that after you progress the story to the last island you suffer a number of setbacks, one of which is a spoiler, so I'll just say the last island is "ugly" in comparison with the stunning environment of the previous area. This dreary zone, while fitting with the story, is made even worse by the increased number of storms and rainy overcast weather that becomes another combatant as you play the flute all the time to bring out the sunshine. If I replay the game, I would probably just load up a backup, do NG+ and then just stop once I got to a certain part in the story and put the game away.

    The only reason why graphics sell is because gaming is full of casusls who care more about things that dont actually matter like graphics and fidelity, i think games like vampire survivors proved that graphics dont matter and that art style is far more important, elden ring had mid graphics but the art style was so incredible that it fooled most gamers into thinking that the graphics were high end because these casuals dont really know the difference, graphics have more to do with fidelity and textures and 90% of what you actually see on screen is the art style

    I went to GameStop to pick up GoT Directors Cut, and ended up getting Rise of the Ronin on a whim. I knew basically nothing about the game. Long story short, I returned Ghost of Tsushima to keep Rise of the Ronin. Ghost of Tsushima's presentation is some of the best in its genre, but it feels empty beyond that. Rise of the Ronin does lack in the graphical fidelity, but the game is by no means ugly, and other things like art style bridge that gap somewhat. Rise of the Ronin's gameplay is what got me hooked, and is what kept me interested. Gameplay that an interactable movie like GoT doesn't have. I got bored after about 3 hours in GoT, and I'm not going to say GoT is a bad game, but it definitely wasn't for me at the time. Maybe when i'm in the mood for a more cinematic experience ill go pick it back up, but RotR is the better game imo. There's actually way more to do in that game.

    Definitely rise of the ronin, i dont even like ghost of tsushima, actually ive never liked any of the games from sucker punch, but i didnt even like team ninja till they released nioh 1 in 2017, but now we have 5 incredible team ninja games with nioh 1&2, stranger of paradise, wo long and now rise of the ronin, but the biggest problem i had with GoT was the progression just felt shallow and unfulfilling, the amount of build variety in RotR puts anything from GoT to shame, i dont wanna play a movie game like GoT, i wanna play an actual video game like RotR, these sony movie games always suffer from a lack of gameplay focus because they are chasing this trend of high end graphics with unsustainable budgets, delays and day one patches, another issue with GoT was the lack of combat variety with one melee weapon and one ranged weapon for the entire game, it just got repetitive fast, while you could play through RotR 10 times with 10 completely different builds that each feel completely unique from the last, each with their own unique weapons, abilities, skills and armor set, GoT is the perfect example of a game thats as wide as an ocean but has the depth of a puddle, the combat just felt so much better in RotR, GoT was kinda clunky and janky by comparison

I played both, and gotta say, the combat in tsushima bored me like hell, wile thrived in ronin, things like parry over parry to respond with a technique etcetera, it keeps you high on octanes, instead of tsushima duels where you just push a button on timing. Also, before butchering ronin, consider who did it: team ninja never did a game this big before, specializing in games organized in main hub and little maps fore every stage. As first open world, altough it reminds sometimes an assas creed, all in all is a good result
