Just played Caverna for the first time today and it’s easily my new favorite game. Played with another newbie and two people who had played it once or twice. They were fighting over adventuring and their farm early so I got an early 3rd worker and focused on clearing my mine. Ended up winning by like 35 points with just shy of 100 total going heavy into mining, rubies, and ore to take the blacksmith spot at the most opportune time. Built the treasure chamber, working cave, and the parlor for cows that I had stockpiled thanks to all the adventures. Also had four ruby mines at the end I believe.
The office tile, in my opinion, is the most powerful tile. You can use the money for other things and when you combine it with the writing chamber you can have tons of strategies. My number 2 is the Beer Parlor. It lends itself to the strongest farming strategy.
I agree - the winning player in our games has The Office tile more than not. It combos well with other strategies and gives you 2 points each time you do it
It’s funny that several rooms I expected to see weren’t even on the list. This game is so good for that reason. Each person can really specialize in what they like to do. One of my favorites is the weapons storage room (I think?) that gives you extra points if every dwarf has a weapon.
The best rooms are those that add to a story. The cooking cave: your dwarves install a kitchen and learn how to cook, Dog school: your pups are running around fetching sticks for you, Beer parlor: You make beer! dwarves love their beer with their food... even their beer with their beer!
Man have Treasure Chamber swung games for me. :) Do you play with the Forgotten Folks expansion? We always use that nowadays, really pushed Caverna up a few notches for me.
@@Stomski hi! Yeah, I later found the review he did of the expansion. I mostly agree with that review, but a fun thing about being steered a bit more is that it opens for some new types of considerations. You might go after something that is just sort of ok for you, simply to block someone else because that action would be amazing for them. I don't think you are railroaded as hard as he implies, but each to their own. :)
It depends on what you want. Do you want a more forgiving, looser, bigger game? Then Caverna is better. Do you want a tighter, more competitive, more replayable game? Then Agricola is better. I prefer Agricola for its more punishing/more rewarding gameplay; but Caverna's maximalist, sandbox design -- while more static and less replayable -- is still a lot of fun.
I gasped as Tom casually raised the box with one hand

Yeah beer parlour/office room (or both I guess) combo’d with the trader can be very good
Timely find! Playing Caverna for the first time tomorrow.

I really like this series.

Tom reviewed it and felt the different species pushed people in specific strategic directions, narrowing the sandbox nature of the original game.

How is this game? I own Agricola. Which one is better?

I'm a prayer chamber kind of guy. We like our dwarves pious
I love the timing of this video... I'm just about to list my copy of Caverna for sale/trade on FB Marketplace!! Thank you!
Where do you live? I’ll buy it.
Top 10 sheep in Catan. My favorite is the white one. Everybody has wood for that one.
The room that gives a point per stone is powerful, but not in your list.
