Wow. This was nicely done. (I know the comment comes 6 years later) Clear, concise, and easy to grasp. It's impressive that you condensed a 3.6 weight game into a 16 minute teach. TWO MEEPLES UP!
I dont mean to be off topic but does any of you know a trick to get back into an instagram account? I stupidly forgot my password. I appreciate any help you can offer me!
Bought the game, pulled out the rules and said "What! Twenty something pages! plus an appendix!". Didn't read. Went on youtube to find a one hour tutorial, a one and a half hour tutorial, and then THIS NO BS GUIDE IN 17 MINUTES!! My friend and I literally watched this on my phone, while setting up and playing the game. We went to the rules/appendix maybe twice the entire game. We LOVE this game. I just wanted to say excellent job on this guide and thanks for helping us have a great first experience.
With that said, I did find a possible error with your description of the "and then" option on action cards. I believe you say if you do the first action, you MUST do the second action. In the Caverna appendix it says "you must carry out the first action. Only afterwards you may, but do not need to, carry out the second action.
YES, I'm so happy to hear that, Fanatikk9! I'm glad this video helped you. You are right about the error, thank you for finding this. I have added a Rules Edit in the description of the video.
Just found this 6 years later, good job! To bad you stopped doing these More errors: * 5:28 You planted three fields when only two were allowed * 6:47 could build two stables* (not pastures)
*Rule Edits:* 3:45 Clarification on *and then/or*: You have exactly 3 choices: 1. take action A without taking action B 2. take both actions, but you _must_ take action A before you take action B 3. take action B, without taking action A 11:00 is a Level 3 Expedition, meaning you get to take 3 rewards. at 11:25 I say "2 rewards" but it should actually be 3.
@@bramgroothedde "or" can be understood as "instead of" According to appendix page A7 Blacksmithing: ... you may forge a Weapon for this Dwarf. Instead, you may place an armed Dwarf on this Action space only to undertake the Expedition. The order is important because the rules say so. I hope I could help with this. 😊
THIS VIDEO IS AMAZING DUDE. I don't know how you managed to get such a long rulebook down to 17m but I'm so grateful that you did!! Now I can just make my housemates watch this instead of explaining the rules to them! Yippee!!
Just wanted to echo everyone else and say you did a fantastic job packing all these rules into such a concise video. With the timestamps I didn't have to consult the rule book much at all! Hope you continue to make more tutorials in the future 🙏🙏🙏
10/10 guide. I was looking for a quick video overview as an Uwe fan who’s already played FFO, Agricola, Nufsjord, and Fields of Arle. Your explanations clicked immediately and I was able to teach this to my group. Thank you!!
I tried to find a guide for this game in my mother tongue and all of them were at least 30 to 50 minutes long and filled with unnecessary commentary, unclear explanations and long pauses. Now I'm glad to have searched in English too. Thanks for this quick and easy guide, it really helped a lot!
Your videos are very instructional and easy to follow! I mean, you taught almost every rule in caverna in 17 minutes in a fun way. Subscribed... Keep it up!
These guides are much needed in the community. Especially in these work replacement games. I wish either you or someone can make one for twilight struggle. Cause that game is too dense for me.
Awesome video! I'm a terrible game explainer for games like this! Your video is so short and to the point that it's like 1/2 the length of other explanations. You take all the complexity of the game and lay it out simply and directly. I'll be using this to teach the game to my group. And I'm subbing to watch out for more games!
I wanted to play this with some friends, but was worried they'd find it too complicated. Wow! Thanks to this video, that won't be an issue. Great work!
Awesome video! I just subscribed! Hopefully one of these days I'll be able to pick up this game cause it looks like a ton of fun! I first got attracted to Uwe games with A Feast for Odin, but that game has SO MANY OPTIONS that it looks like it can become an AP nightmare. This game looks like it has a ton of freedom without being as overwhelming as Odin. Can't wait to give it a try some day!
The game is actually simple but there are a lot of components and small rules to remember. Dogs can watch sheep, boars can be in a stable in a forest, donkeys can be in mines but I don't find the game complicated. Go watch a tutorial in Vinhos... OMG that game is ridiculously complicated and will hurt our head.
14:41 “All new farm animals are gained at the same time, not one by one.” What does that mean? Is there a reason that rule is in place?

I think there is a slight error with the "and then / or". You are never forced to do the second action, but if you want to do the two actions the one on top must be done first. (It's in the Appendix page A-6). It's a minor thing though. The rest of the how to play was very thorough and helped me refresh my memory!
At 11:00 you said he went on a Level 3 expedition, which means he should be able to take 3 of the available items. But then at 11:25 you said "you decide to take a donkey as the first of your TWO rewards".. Shouldn't it have been first of your three rewards?
Great tutorial ! Subbed! Short, to the point, and very informative. One thing I'd like to understand more is the expeditions. So how exactly do I get my dwarfs to get loot in the higher levels, say 13 or so ?
When a dwarf with a weapon goes on an expedition, the number on the _board_ is the number of rewards that dwarf can obtain. The number on the _dwarf's weapon_ corresponds to your expedition loot overview card. If your dwarf's weapon is 13, you can get anything level 13 or under on your expedition loot overview card.
I think he misspeaks when he says two Level 1 quests....the reply is right and a correction of sort it seems as you can get 1 reward equal to your level twice. Which allows a level 13 dwarf to take two level 13 rewards
Hey, in regards to the "and then / or" rule, I don't see anywhere in the rules that you must do the first action. In the appendix it says that you can do one of two things: 1) execute the actions in the specified order. (First action, and then Second action) 2) execute of one the two actions (no restriction on whether it's first or second). The ruling you said is closer to the "and then" rule. You execute the first action, and execute the second.
You are correct, the wording in the video for and then/or is a bit off. You have exactly 3 choices: 1. take action A without taking action B 2. take both actions, but you _must_ take action A before you take action B 3. take action B, without taking action A
Great video. One question about planting and harvesting crops: When harvest time comes you remove the top most crop from the field, so the two types of fields would be down to one vegetable and two grain. Are the follow statements correct: At this point a vegetable is able to be replanted using a future sow action. Grain cannot be replanted but will yield one wheat on the next harvest. After that harvest, grain will be able to be replanted again using a future sow action.
Any crops in your Personal supply may only be sown on *empty* fields. If there are still Vegetables or Grain remaining in a field after a Harvest, you may not sow additional crops on top of that field until it is empty.
No BS Guide I'm sorry it's just a bit confusing to me. So if you have a sown vegetable in a field and a harvest comes you take the top vegetable off leaving a single vegetable. At this point can you sow the vegetable again bc the lone veggie represents a planted crop?
No worries, I'm happy to help! When you Harvest a cop (whether Vegetable or Grain) you place that crop in your Personal supply. Later, if you take a Sow action, you may sow up to 2 Grain and 2 Vegetables from your Personal supply onto empty fields. If you are asking "Can I sow a crop the instant I harvest it?" The answer is No. The Harvest does not include a Sow action. You must take a Sow action on a following turn during the Work phase to sow crops. If you are asking "Can I sow an additional Vegetable if I already have 2 Vegetable fields?" The answer is Yes. There is no limit to the amount of Vegetable (or Grain) fields you may have at any time.
After a harvest the the field which was sown now has one veggie on it, which is from my personal supply. Is the field considered empty at this time? Can I remove that vegetable at any time now because it was from my personal supply to begin with? Or do I have to wait for another harvest to take the single vegetable off. Thus leaving the field empty.
@NoBSGuide Rules question / verification. At 4:55 you say we can convert an animal (other than dogs) at any time during any phase for any reason to food. However at towards the end at 14:30 you mention that we cannot convert bred animals that don't have a valid home OR the breeding animal type. Couldn't you convert the breeding animal to make room prior? With that being said if you convert a unique pair of two animals (IE you have exactly 2 animals of one type) I feel your new baby animal should be null and void, since you killed the parents during breeding.
Oh, also, i think there's a small error. Earlier you explain how animals may be converted to food at any time without constraints and go on to describe the challenges related to that during breeding. "You may not make room for babies at this time" you explain, even for the sheep. However, the rulebook says "Baby animals and parent animals may not be converted to food immediately after birth." I interpret that as being allowed to convert one sheep to food *before* taking the lamb during the breeding phase, *as long as there are more than two sheep at the start of the breeding phase.* In practice my interpretation means that the conversion rule only applies when you start with two of an animal. What do you think?
There's no need for hostility. Making youtube videos doesn't make you instantly rich, and it's common for reviewers and how to play channels to get donated games from their viewers, to help them offset the cost. It's a perfectly acceptable thing to politely ask for donations.
I don’t understand why you said the conversion of farm animals to food can be done at any time without restriction, but then during breeding the conversion of new farm animals cannot be done. If I know breeding is coming up and I don’t have room, can’t I just convert during my last action before breeding to get around this rule? If it is so easy to get around the breeding restriction, why does it exist at all? I must be missing something.
2 probable mistakes (or not used the right words for it). One CAN move a stable wherever/whenever he wants after the initial placement. You can adjust so you can find home for all animals. It does not have a permanent placement. 2nd - Furnish a Cavern also alows you to Furnish a Dwelling. Only Furnish a Dwelling is limited to Dwellings. Great video, you should do one extra explaining all rooms (with few tips on how to use it, what synergies they have).
See page 19 of the rule book: "Stables are permanent. Once established, they cannot be moved or removed." Also, I believe 8:57 has the correct description for Furnish a Cavern. Thanks for the comment!
This is really well done, thank you! Excellent work covering everything so succinctly. One personal issue, it feels like you're yelling, if possible maybe speak in a normal tone and raise the levels in post?
Ok, so this is enough like Agricola that if I didn't like that game, I probably won't like this one, either. I liked the idea of Agricola, but I hated the "feed everyone or else" mechanic and this game sounds like the exact same thing. Constant pressure to have to have enough food, and to fill up every space, have one of every animal, or else you lose points. So instead of being able to pick a strategy of gaining points, I have to try to do it all or lose in the scoring.
They are similar, but I feel that Caverna is an improvement over Agricola. Feeding your dwarfs is much easier, and there's much more strategy in Caverna. It's also not as important to try to do a little of everything (you can specialize in a couple areas and still gain enough points to win). Check out this review comparing the two games: boardgamegeek.com/thread/1179158/will-you-prefer-caverna-or-agricola-review
Steel Beard I've actually commonly heard of this as "fixed" Agricola for those who don't like Agricola. It's less tight, more forgiving, and kind of more fun... Unless you want the extreme pressure of Agricola.
Wow. This was nicely done. (I know the comment comes 6 years later) Clear, concise, and easy to grasp. It's impressive that you condensed a 3.6 weight game into a 16 minute teach. TWO MEEPLES UP!
Nice job tackling Caverna. This will help a lot of people, I'm sure!
It is a huge honor to know you watched this video, Rodney!! Thanks for the encouraging comment!
It sure helped me!
Hey rodney! :) good to hear from ya dude!

Thanks a million. 6 years later it still helps. It's a pity you haven't fully started these videos. Would be nice to watch more 😢
Your videos are very instructional and easy to follow! I mean, you taught almost every rule in caverna in 17 minutes in a fun way. Subscribed... Keep it up!
Thanks, I really appreciate that! Thank you for watching and subscribing!
Great refresher to the game after not playing for 2 years. Thanks!
I'm so glad this was a good resource for you! Keep on gaming.
This video is terrific. What a fantastic job. Thank you for making it.
What a great overview video covering the rules and game play! Love it!!!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks a lot.
These guides are much needed in the community. Especially in these work replacement games. I wish either you or someone can make one for twilight struggle. Cause that game is too dense for me.
It's on my list! If you or someone else would be willing to donate a copy, I'll move it to the top of the list.
this video helped me a lot from mistakes from the 1st playthrough w/ my friends at friday night. Thanks a lot, awesome video and good explanations

Fantastic job of explaining this game. This will help my friends and I immensely. We appreciate your work !
Have fun, Caverna is a blast!
Yes, you are back! Awesome! I still haven't gotten to play Caverna, it's been gaining dust on the shelf.
It's fantastically fun! Hopefully this video will help get it on your table faster :)
I wanted to play this with some friends, but was worried they'd find it too complicated. Wow! Thanks to this video, that won't be an issue. Great work!
You're a godsend. The manual is not written well, its all over the place.
This is a great tutorial and yes, has no BS and gets right to the point. You've got a new subscriber!
This is excellent! Great job! I will be using this next time we play Caverna.
I hope this video gets you away from the rule book and playing faster. That would be a "mission accomplished" if I ever heard one!
That was very good. Instant sub. My wife and I are going to play this one for the first time next time we go to the Board Game Cafe near our house.
excellent work. does exactly what it says on the tin
Nicely done. Subbed. Loved the sheepnado!
Thanks for the Sub! Sheepnado hahaha
"and then.. ORRRRR" :D thanks good guide :)

High Quality guide and accurate!
Much thanks! Have a blast.
Great explanation, thank you. This is what I was looking for.
I hope it proved helpful to you!
Thank you so much for this video. Great way to debrief people before playing :)

More coming soon! Thanks, Derek.
Thanks gonna be playing this tomorrow
How'd it go?
Went good was a little long for our first game but all and all was good your how to play was great

Wow Great Job! Thanks Subscribed. Annnnnd now I want this damn game lol
You won't regret buying it, I assure you. Thanks for subscribing, Jason!!

You have to wait for another Harvest to take the single Vegetable off.
Well, what can I say, finally ! :)
17 minutes! Quicker than others, and hopefully more thorough :)
I like your style
agricola next? love this video
It's on the list!
I understand weapon levels but not expedition levels. What are they?
@NoBSGuide
Rules question / verification.
Thanks!
How many times have I watched this video? 6:50 still makes me laugh.
Oh, also, i think there's a small error. Earlier you explain how animals may be converted to food at any time without constraints and go on to describe the challenges related to that during breeding. "You may not make room for babies at this time" you explain, even for the sheep. However, the rulebook says "Baby animals and parent animals may not be converted to food immediately after birth." I interpret that as being allowed to convert one sheep to food *before* taking the lamb during the breeding phase, *as long as there are more than two sheep at the start of the breeding phase.*
In practice my interpretation means that the conversion rule only applies when you start with two of an animal. What do you think?
not sure the point of shuffling the cards and then separating them by number? Couldn't i separate first, then shuffle?
Absolutely, whatever works best! I think the rule book says to shuffle them all just to eliminate the need for multiple shuffles.
gotcha, thanks for the answer. Very good walkthrough, just placed an order for a copy of this today. Very excited to get this to the table :)
Wow. Wonderful explanation, and cool game, but I’ll have to pass on this. Very overwhelming. I’d be done-in after the initial setup.
Wow super fast talker! Pausing and rewinding took longer with this video than watching one that’s longer but spoken at everyday pace.
The way you say baby and donkey is very funny to me.
You should do A Feast for Odin.
I'd love to! I don't currently own a copy, so it may take a while or it may never happen. Would you or someone else be willing to donate a copy?
Buy your own fucking games and do the rule explainations, man.
There's no need for hostility. Making youtube videos doesn't make you instantly rich, and it's common for reviewers and how to play channels to get donated games from their viewers, to help them offset the cost. It's a perfectly acceptable thing to politely ask for donations.
shuffle them and rearrange in numerical order??
I don’t understand why you said the conversion of farm animals to food can be done at any time without restriction, but then during breeding the conversion of new farm animals cannot be done. If I know breeding is coming up and I don’t have room, can’t I just convert during my last action before breeding to get around this rule? Also, I believe 8:57 has the correct description for Furnish a Cavern.
Thanks for the comment!
No BS Guide I cannot believe I've missed that one about the stable. Damn it. Thanks
You should do Shadows Over Camelot
I remember you mentioning that on my Carcassonne vid! I still plan on doing that one eventually :D
Wait wait wait, how big of a table do i need for this one for say 2-3 players?? We dont have a big table
Around 110x110centimeter for 2 person
3 player maybe enough but it will be very full
thank you! : D
This isn't the board games I was looking for but I'ma get it anyway
This is really well done, thank you! Excellent work covering everything so succinctly. One personal issue, it feels like you're yelling, if possible maybe speak in a normal tone and raise the levels in post?
Good tip Tyler, I'll look into it for the next video. Thanks for watching!
Ok, so a simplified Agricola? :) Got it! :)
I dont own this game, but im going to watch it anyway
It's so much fun, what'd you think?
actually, only newborn animal and parents (so 3 animals of the type) cannot be converted into food
I dare you to do a no BS guide for Vast
That would be awesome! I don't own it currently, would you or someone else be willing to donate a copy?
Unfortunately they are still in between print runs, I'll think about it though in the future, this super fast tutorial was great!
