This clip has made a 63 year old man SO VERY HAPPY, I have listened to Karen's marvellous Voice for over 50 years. And I had never heard "Strike up the band " until this week. I thought that I would have to wait until I get to Heaven, to hear my Musical soul mate Sing something original again...You made this weary old man smile and shed tears of Joy...Thankyou...
So many critics and people took The Carpenters for granted...their image, their looks, their music. Richard and Karen were constantly made fun of just for BEING. Folks were so jaded that they didn't know what they had, namely a fantastic musician, arranger and producer, and a little drummer girl who just happened to have THE GREATEST SINGING VOICE IN THE WORLD. Now that voice is forever silent. A couple of generations have passed and those superficial concerns are a thing of the past, but thank God we have eternal audio reminders like this concert to show music fans old and new what brilliance is. REST IN POWER, KAREN. ❤❤
0:37 Strike Up the Band 2:22 Thank You for the Music 7:23 There's a Kind of Hush 9:45 When I Fall in Love 12:19 I Need to Be in Love 18:00 (They Long to Be) Close to You 20:01 Don't Be Afraid 21:02 Sing 27:11 Flat Baroque 27:58 Piano Picker / Strike up the Band / 'S Wonderful / Fascinating Rhythm 34:26 Close Encounters /Star Wars Medley 41:28 (They Long to Be) Close to You 43:52 For All We Know 44:42 Top of the World 45:48 Ticket to Ride 46:18 Only Yesterday 47:32 I Won't Last a Day Without You 48:07 Superstar 50:00 Rainy Days and Mondays 50:57 Goodbye to Love 56:40 We've Only Just Begun
There's an audible "Gasp" from an audience member, at Karen's final high note in the "Rainy Day's" medley...Also the bridge between Superstar, and Rainy Day's gets added applause , with the unique way that Karen goes from one song to the next....EXTRAORDINARY....But, That's Karen 👏 😀 😄..
Karen Would Only Have Almost 5 Year's Left Listening To Her Sing I Need To Be In Love Makes Me Want To Cry For Her Beautiful Angel You Will Never Ever Be Forgotten And You Are Truly Missed And Loved ❤️💔
Each year Karen sang a little bit different, improving what was already the best... Makes me think what she would have done in the next years... Unfortunately we will never know... Thank you for posting it, "new" material from Carpenters always thrill me ❤
it was a good cry listening to this recording and remembering karen, if only she was around until this very day😢 thank you for digitising this recording❤
@amazingstarzz I believe Richard Carpenter does have a recorded demo version...but he is a stickler perfectionist and refuses to release hundreds of Karen demo's from his vault 😪😪😪
So glad to have this from 1978!! Not alot of concert content out there from '78.Karen sounds great as usual! From the 1st second to 1:50 Karen's voice during "Strike Up The Band" is Outstanding!! Still get chill bumps.Thank You so much for posting this!
Isn't it great to hear Don't Be Afraid, such a great fit for Karen and the whole Carpenters sound! . I can confirm it is a semitone lower than the original recording, are we putting that down (so to speak) to tape speed?
Richard thanks the Captain and Tennille for being in attendance at this concert. Read in Toni Tennille's memoir what happened when Toni went backstage to congratulate Richard and Karen afterwards
You can tell by the photo for this video, that both Karen and Richard, were beyond tired and physically spent, both simply do not look well or healthy by any means..
This is the gig where Richard called it quits. Is drug addiction had just become too much for him to continue on. The good news is he got treatment at Karen's helping him all the way and he went on to feel better. I must say however you're never the same after drug treatment
@linda lopez that is sweet to share. I also saw them at this same venue. I honestly can't remember if it was their last night or not. I do remember though like you said it was so wonderful of a concert. It it was the only Carpenter concert that I went to but oh how beautiful it was. I also toward the back in that we just walked right up to get the tickets.
Back then not much was recorded on film. People took their portable cassette recorder in and taped it luckily. I got the original tape and digitized it
I love this, but it’s evident that digitization doesn’t always improve audio quality. Also, I have perfect pitch, and I can tell the pitch is lower than it should be.
Please remember that this was recorded long before anyone had recording devices in their pocket as a matter of routine. Back then, sneaking any kind of recorder into a concert like this was highly prohibited and was cause to get you thrown out of the venue. We're lucky that someone took that risk for posterity's sake. We were never meant to hear this. It was exclusively for those in attendance that night.
You're absolutely correct when you say it sounds "just about on pitch", but indeed I do have perfect pitch and my ears tell me that this recording is one semitone below the correct pitch.
...thanks for posting. These are the kind of recordings I wish were released to the public. Knowing Richard, all of their live concerts were recorded. Karen's vocals never sounded so rich, full and that lower register gives me chills. Thanks again...
This is an original copy of the tape i got from ‘78. It was worn down. At the beginning you hear can hear the “wobbly” sound.. it broke in half there.. luckily i fixed that

No problem! I like to hear that you enjoyed it!
Another 63 year old fan, me, applauds you for this. Especially loved Karen's opening of the vest, lol. Thank you! 💕

Absolutely stunning. Richard should put out some Live albums. I am sure he has good recordings of their concerts.

That was amazing!
After the strong echo, I think the person said “HOLY” 😂 Karen’s voice was sweet but powerful. Reminds me of Julie Andrews
What time stamp?

Agreed! It’s even sadder to known that this was the Carpenters last ever full concert and Karen still sounded strong. I wish she was still around
I seen the Carpenter's in concert In 1973 They was great RIP Beautiful Karen Carpenter VA.❤🙌🌈🙏👑🔜

Wow Wow Wow!!!!! This is very rare. Love Karen's interaction with the audience.

it was a good cry listening to this recording and remembering karen, if only she was around until this very day😢 thank you for digitising this recording❤
Thanks for this - great to hear a “different & personal” recording xx
Amazing, I hope that you recover the actual video recording ,well done, how we miss you. Karen.
Oh, how i wish we got a studio recorded version of "Thank You For The Music"!!😢😢😢
Same !! The closest we have is the performance on The Tonight Show
@amazingstarzz I believe Richard Carpenter does have a recorded demo version...but he is a stickler perfectionist and refuses to release hundreds of Karen demo's from his vault 😪😪😪
Wonderful! rare track tunes!
Karen " I have all new clothes.. Shat do ya think so far.23 million dollars LOL! She's SO freakin cute!!

Star Wars but fantastic applauses 👏👏👏
This would’ve been awesome to see.

What happened backstage?
@@amazingstarzz yes what happened?

@linda lopez I'm guessing a front row ticket at that gig cost about $10.25 right? Just as a funny aside.

@1487.There was also a private concert at Richard & Karen’s University where they sang Christmas songs. Perhaps that was the concert you saw?
Karen. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
💕💕💕💕💕
Beautiful! It was there a real orquestra?
Me encanta escuchar I need to be in love...
Why isn't there video footage of this concert?
Back then not much was recorded on film. People took their portable cassette recorder in and taped it luckily. I got the original tape and digitized it
What song are they singing around 51:53?
It’s called “Goodbye To Love” it’s from 1972.
I love this, but it’s evident that digitization doesn’t always improve audio quality. Also, I have perfect pitch, and I can tell the pitch is lower than it should be.
