    The 1900 is one of my dream cars. I'd so love to have one but I probably never will. A fun fact is that the 1900 was a great inspiration for the design of the Volvo Amazon (121)

      @@Matteo_Licata I'm not sure. I read this a long time ago in a motor magazine, don't remember which one. The only mention of this I can find right now is that the designer took inspiration from italian design, nothing more specific. But it's quite obvious when you look at both cars.

    This is really fascinating and very timely as it shows Alfa Romeo was able to make the transition from being a pre-war coach builder to a modern mass-production car maker, but still retaining its unique sporting heritage. The company will probably have to evolve again, and it will be interesting to see this happen.

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  3 года назад +2

      Indeed. I'm very positive about the future of Alfa Romeo, as the brand has already survived all sort of headwinds. Future Alfas will have to be electric, just like everything else, but I think the brand can survive that. After all, pure-bred Alfa engines are long gone anyway, and future buyers won't care anyway. As long as Alfas will be gorgeous to look at and fun to drive, the brand has a future.

      Indeed. This 1900 is not in concours-winning condition, yet it somehow looks and feels even better because of that. Among the cars the Portello Factory is selling, this 1900 comes a close second to the GTV Turbodelta, in my personal ranking. I'd love to be able to buy it.

    The side view of the 1900 looks similar to a Peugeot from the same era. Regardless, the 1900 looks beautiful. The chrome detail on the D pillar looks like it was drawn by a fountains pen.

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  3 года назад

      Yes, car design has always had its own trends, and the 1900's body is a typical early-50s design, when the fenders started to become integrated within the shape, with a touch of American influence too. The front end is the part I like the most of the 1900, I admit.

  • @macacoeletrico2963

    Dear Matteo,
    I don't know if you've heard about a car made in Argentina in the sixties by IKA (Industrias Kaiser de Argentina) named "Bergantin", that was an Alfa 1900 produced under licence, with some visual changes and Willys/Kaiser engine (blargh!). It was not a sucess, but it's rear axle was used on the most emblematic argentinian automobile, the "Torino", that was a AMC Rambler American modified in house, with Battista Farina (himself) restyling and Juan Manuel Fangio consulting. Great story!

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  3 года назад

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  3 года назад

      I can imagine ;)
      Given the car has been raced a lot, I guess it received a fair bit of damage over the years. I've seen it in the metal and it's far from pristine... Very charming, but one has to live with that, otherwise, this car could easily become a bare-metal restoration.

  • @kevgermany

    Lovely.
    But... I remember early vinyl. Was on the seats of my dad's Cortina, Anglia.... Stank in the son and made me feel sick. To the stage that I complained, almost refused to get in the car. Only to be told that there was no smell. I.e. put up and shut up.

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  3 года назад +2

      Ahaha yes, vinyl is not exactly a luxurious material :)
      But I assure you that this 1900 smells nice inside... I can't quite describe it though. It's definitely "old car smell," but different from the classics I'm more used to, 70s or 80s cars.

    • @kevgermany
      @kevgermany 3 года назад

      @@Matteo_Licata my early 70s Landrover had vinyl and a smell. But not a vinyl smell. Wish I still had it. Guess it's gone to a scrapyard somewhere south of the equator.

    There was other versions (licenses?/rip offs?) of this car, some had a V4 engine, the name was somebody (?7) italian surname, and there was a version with a in-line 4 cyl. called "Bergantin".

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  3 года назад

      Yes. I know very little about the Argentinian IKA Bergantin though. Apparently, Alfa Romeo agreed to cede to IKA the 1900's body tooling when it stopped making it, in 1959. However, the engine and running gear were different, not derived from the original Alfa Romeo model.

  • @wanhapatu6971
    @wanhapatu6971 3 года назад

    I can see lots of similarities in bodywork to Volvo Amazon. In Volvo they sure stole a thing or two from Alfa Romeo.

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  3 года назад +2

      Well, to be fair with Volvo, I'd say that both the Amazon and the 1900 are quite typical 1950s designs, and the inspiration came from American cars of the late 40s

      I was thinking of a SAAB of the era with a two-stroke, but i realized mostly because the exhaust sounds mean and the styling is yes, somewhat derivative.
