Geology for Gold Diggers - 101 - The biggest geological understanding - in any creek, stream, or river - is knowing your rocks. You have broken and irregular shaped rocks - they are young rocks and recently broken off - in geological "time." They came from a nearby origin source - and were washed/tumbled down to its present position within a very short distance. Rounded and worn rocks are older. One searches for these older cobble rocks. Most-likely they came from a longer distance of faster water upstream and up-elevation. All the washings, tumblings, and polishing happened from ancient times to its present embedding in a down-elevation having slower and flatter waterflow downstream. Older rocks with older waterflow - have a greater chance of additional dropping of sedimentary layers in slower and winding oxbow streams and rivers with flatter geology of meadows and estuaries. Cut off oxbows turn into little side ponds and lakes next to the current waterflow. Oxbows are nice if they are found downstream of tailings as those regions will have a greater concentrate of tailings vs the current waterflow. Older rock regions with sedimentary geologies and slower waterflow drop the finest of eroded organic schmuck, muds, clays, silts, ... black sand and gold ... from its highlands original geological (volcanic, igneous, tectonic, sedimentary, and metamorphic) rock and soils. Highland waters with faster velocity, rushing through geological downward slopes, causing erosional processes - not sedimentation.Through time, and longer distances, all of these finer deposits of erosional debris will jiggle along with the waterflow, over and around river stones and boulders (with rock falls and waterfall vibrations - and notes, frequencies), down into all the tiny cracks and back eddy currents. The time is finding these geologies fitting this process. One needs to listen to the waterflow. If the music of the waterflow is high notes (and very frothy, waterfalls, rushing current, etc ... there will be less erosional debris found in that area. Mother lodes will be found in those upstream and highland locations being eroded by geology, weather, and waterflow. Downstream is where the waterway muic is lower, slower, less rock falls, aerated water, ... and one starts finding the sedimentary deposits of black sand and precious metals Also as one finds all the natural tailings downstream, working backwards up the stream, one gets to the original mother lode. If the upstream creek or river diverts away from that mother lode and leached particles, then you know there was an even older (visibly existing or covered overburden of an) ancient waterway. That then points you in the upward elevation away from the current waterway toward that mother lode through the upper meadow/detla/estuary. Where one found the divergence of the tailings in the current waterway, one can work the down-elevation of the other side of the current waterway finding that ancient water flow. One might pick up the ancient trail of tailings and start working them in the lower meadow/delta/estuary. It is not actually known as yet, by science, of the size of black sand, at what rate of waterflow and slope of elevation, that deposits will be found. The same could be said for gold and silver as well. If one knew that water velocity, one only needs to find that waterflow and below in looking for sedimentary tailings and leachings. The mother lode will be buried in the upstream geology and faster waters.
I worked years ago on riparian (river) modelling at university as an undergrad. There were some fantastic models of flow rate, bed roughness, elevation, temperature and salinity that can act as a proxy in experiments; I bet these could be used to plot potential for black sands, given a known geology. Using a Monte-Carlo method for running a simulation of the flow and deposition a few thousand times might yield some interesting results that could have potential for a ground truth.
One caveat is that it's quite likely that much of the gold being found is glacial. The lode may be far to the north and the gold is washing out of till! Therefore even though The depositional process within the stream is the same it is washing out of secondary or tertiary deposits at much lower concentration.
I usualy watch your shows in the morning and see cobbles and say darnit should wait till afternoon but stayed up all night for some reason drinking and saw cobbles i cheers you when cobbles came up lmao
I used to play by making little dams in a drainage ditch growing up. Maybe that's part of the fun of prospecting, getting to play in the mud as an adult with a chance of discovering something special. Glad to see you getting your hands dirty with your friends, FGW! Thanks for the adventure.
When your mud.. er a water slowed down, I was thinking of Clint Eastwood throwing sticks of dynamite 🧨 in Carbon Canyon. 🤠 😂 Then you popped up above the muddy water gold grabbers to muck up their water! 😂 funny dude. It’s a 0.3 dressed up as a 0.9 😝 great video Jason, I love how you do enough testing you get such a thorough reading on where the better gold is and the shallow clay etc. I was impressed with those larger pieces you found too, the new property seems to have great potential 🏔️⛏️🍻🐕🦴
Fridge of Wonder jingle made me laugh out loud and spit my beer all over my keyboard. It'll cost you 2 ounces of gold to pay for the cleanup, so I expect Rigby to put you on the best ever gold on next video to pay for it. Hope that's a deal. Other than that, great adventure, as usual, and thanks for sharing the fun :)
That'd be great, if you could rig up something that would play that Fridge of Wonders jingle, every time that you open it. That way you wouldn't ever have to edit in that soundbyte when making each post, and we would be treated to that beauty to our ears to our hearts content! Cheers!
WOW - nice pickens today. Funny thought I had while watching A few millennia of human advancement and we're all about watching a man in a krik washing his cobbles. Then bringing home the sand to build a channel for the thousands of fellow cobble washers. Count me in.
So the object of what you do is you gather up some junk metal and a piece of rubber welcome mat ( all recyclable) and go to a local stream hike about 17 miles through the brush and sticker bushes. Configure that junk metal and rubber mat in such a way that it catches more metal objects, that surprisingly is also kinda sorta recyclable. In the process you play in the mud the your mother used to yell at you for. You bring this stuff home and use even more of this metal and rubber and you added something that prospector tripp recycled to clean that mud up so your mom wont yell at you. And i also noticed that you partook of a refreshment that came from some sort of recycler. Great concept i hope it catches on 🍺🍺🍺 Good going on your finds brother
Always learning something from you and thankful for it. Lot of those farm field type creeks around here, couldn't blame Rigby for trying to get a fresh 1/2 ton beefstick now could ya😂!! Glad to see you in the green grass weather though. Take care!!

10 feet before the sand, l'd work that all day. Boy Rigby watched you share the Jerky very closely. Nice of you to take some new friends out to your favorite places. Yes, you may be on to a good spot. 😮
When I was a kid here in Michigan we had a lot of steep and deep ravines probably formed after many decades serving as drainage when farm land was cleared, leveled, and de-stoned. A relative trickle of water sawed these deeper and deeper and deeper. Most of it was clay and gravelly moraine and such. I wonder if there was gold in them thar ravines?
I love your videos. Very entertaining! I would love to try looking for gold myself, but I’m down in Louisiana so I don’t think I would have any luck. Keep up the good work and I’ll just have to keep watching.

10 feet before the sand, l'd work that all day. Boy Rigby watched you share the Jerky very closely. Nice of you to take some new friends out to your favorite places. Yes, you may be on to a good spot. 😮
10 ft before the sand aye? I’ll give it a shot!!
Only one way to find out aye ?!!! 😃✅🍻
So cool! I learned a lots of tips from you! Thank you! 😊
We really appreciate that 😃🐺✅✌️
I love your videos. Very entertaining! I would love to try looking for gold myself, but I’m down in Louisiana so I don’t think I would have any luck. Keep up the good work and I’ll just have to keep watching.
